Nice surprise

This book was a very nice surprise. The author does a good job of creating a plot that engages you. The plot reveals itself by going back in time and coming back to the present so that you get a glimpse of the present day characters.

Sorprendente

No sé cómo describir bestia novela que me ha dejado totalmente sorprendida. La forma que se desarrolla la historia contada por los diferentes personajes, la agonía de los mismos, el desenlace, todo ha sido perfectamente llevado para mantener el interés en la historia. Me ha gustado mucho y se la recomiendo.

Es un libro muy interesante en la cual me abre los ojos de que debo enseñarles a mis hijas y eso es ser humildes, caritativas y darles los valores de la vida. Recomendaría a todos este libro ya que nos enseña muchas cosa que debemos valorar y cuidar.

Wonderful story

I came across this book after Michael Lewis mentioned it in a New York Times interview. It's a terrific story, very enjoyable, and I look forward to listening to the rest of Richler's books.

OK but a bit disappointing; weak narration

For a book this famous I was underwhelmed. The story is OK; but Duddy can be a very annoying character; he not a moralist, yet pride prevents him from taking short cuts the wealth he craves. I was especially disappointed in the narration, He doesn't even try to differentiate between the characters with different voices.

Disappointing; no goal to the book

I was more disappointed in this book than I expected. It followed an ambitious Jewish boy from high school through adulthood, and it went through disappointments and dreams.

My own problems with this book: I found few redeeming qualities in the main character; the only character with whom I felt I could relate was not covered well enough for me to actually relate with her; I wasn't sure what the overall goal of the book was. I liked the girlfriend, but it wasn't a book about her, it was a book about Duddy. I realize that a lot of the things that I disliked about him early on were sort of excusable by his being a teenager. Actually, he was a teenager all the way through, albeit 19 in the end JUST still a teenager. Consequently, the character couldn't be expected to act totally as a mature, completely mentally developed adult. But in that respect, the book kind of left us hanging! I know there was a movie be from it, and I intended to watch said movie (and contribute in a book club discussion), but for various logistic reasons, that was not to be, and I'm sorry that I missed out on others' viewpoints and reactions; I suppose they could have convinced me that overall, it was a worthwhile trip, but currently, I remain unconvinced.

Belongs in the canon of Great Canadian writers

A classic, great story you will not stop listening! Richler at his best. Better than the movie, which was also excellent with a young Richard Dreyfuss as Duddy.

What was most disappointing about Henry Roths story?

This book truly put me off listening for so long that I've accrued 7 credits! The main character in this book would have been a huge waste of space on earth. I couldn't even finish it so I do hope that it had something redeemable in the end.

What about Christopher Kipiniaks performance did you like?

He made me hate the character.

Couldn't finish it, I just didn't care

Would you try another book from Colm Toibin and/or Fiona Shaw?

Fiona Shaw was an excellent narrator. The problem was the story. It was boring and depressing and I never felt compelled to care about Nora. I finally just gave up. I gave it three stars only because he narration was good.

Would you ever listen to anything by Colm Toibin again?

I might, some reviews say his other books are much better but then many reviewers loved this book. People praise the excellent writing. I guess I am a reader that is more concerned with the story. Everyone likes something different. This just wasn't for me.

Disappointment!

Contrived & Overreaching

I had high expectations for this book and stuck with it hoping that it would be worth it in the end. To me, it is a sadly strange story. The writing and action are often overwhelmingly vague and yet at the same time minutely precise. Almost like a randomly focused and then unfocused camera lens. A confusing mix.

Part of me wonders about this "personal exploration" of a woman--from the woman's point of view--written by a man. I mean, you can study sea lions and be an absolute expert in the field but in the end you will never actually "be" a sea lion. You will never understand sea lion-ness. I think the same thing goes when it comes to this book. Toibin will never be a woman and doesn't seem to know what women really think and feel beyond assumptions. I know--I know--each woman is different you say, but something was missing with the whole picture. I am not saying that men can't write about women. I am saying on this occasion--from this context--for me it didn't work. And no, I don't think women are like sea lions--it was just an example.

In the end it all felt remote. Very little of the action and interpretation of the action and behavior rings true or sounds plausible. Plus it's very sad and depressing to boot. Listen with caution.

Very moving portrait, interesting times

I really enjoyed this book which is the first one I have read by Colm Toibin. I also thought the narration was, for the most part, quite good. The only complaint I have about the narration is that a few of the characterizations were a bit over the top - almost cartoonish in tone.

Interesting Having Oates' Stories Together

Certain stories were riveting, and I definitely anticipated the endings. But many I found a bit lackluster, personally.

Still, Joyce Carol Oates is a favorite writer of mine overall, and listening to these reminded me why: she has a way of almost immediately locking you into her characters, and you find yourself invested in them, if nothing else.

I do think they could have picked mire than 2 readers.... for so many stories, their voices, IMO, became tired to listen to.

Definitely Dark and Deep

She lives up to your need for near poetic photo perfect details about life. Scenes which were handled well but were nearly graphic for my vivid imagination.

I just couldn't follow the story, and the female narrator was grating. She was overly dramatic and spoke with an anxiety producing fake english-american accent of some sort, like she was in a shakespear play. Disappointing, but I just couldn't keep on going.

Excellent !

A slow build, the narrative establishing the characters and touching on so many aspects of life - relationships, friendship, truth, betrayal, parenting, art, and loss. The prose is lovely, and Cassandra Campbell, one of my favorite narrators, reads this beautifully. An emotional story and a truely surprise ending (I definitely did not see it coming)

Elegant prose, honest reflection on marriage

Within the first lines of Life Drawing, Robin Black's stunning debut novel, we learn that the narrator's husband, Owen, has died, although we still don't know the details of how this happened.

This is one of those novels that although provides great suspense and engages the reader's curiosity from the beginning, it's not so much about guessing the outcome as much as it is about how the story and its characters develop.

As Gus begins narrating their story, the couple's relationship have apparently survived an extra-marital affair in which she was the guilty party. Right after the affair ended, she decided to take the honest approach and confessed the whole thing to Owen.

Owen is a 51 year-old writer and Gus is a 47 year-old painter, they have accomplished a moderate level of success on their respective careers, good enough to provide a comfortable middle class life style.

Eventually and after receiving an unexpected inheritance, the couple retreats from their cosmopolitan life in the city and decide to buy a secluded 1918 farmhouse in Pennsylvania. On the surface it looks that Gus and Owen have found "safety in their solitude".

This One is Tedious -- Folklore and Family at Sea

I thought this might be an exciting story of how a family made its way in the lobster fishery -- daring ships at sea and all. It was not. Rather, it was a monologue (well narrated by Cassandra Campbell) told by a lobsterman's daughter whose family had fished for lobster since the late 1700's. And thus begins the folklore -- tales about a great grandfather who painted (and tedious descriptions of his paintings and the locales from which he painted) and lots of folklore surround purported "mermaids" and other half creature/half human sea dwellers who influence(d) the Kings family through the centuries.

Somehow, this story just never did really grab my interest. The characters weren't very well developed and some of the "action" was contrived to add some zing to the story, it seemed. Moreover, it had a rather sudden ending in which there is: mayhem and death; a daughter vows to relive all the happenings included in her ancestor's paintings; babies happen; and alls well that ends well.

Three stars is a pretty generous rating, I think.

Ultimately Dissappointing

I started off really enjoying this story, but the author lost focus and the ending was rushed and ultimately dissappointing. As always, Cassandra Campbell reads this beautifully ! Her narration saves the story from being a complete train wreck.

The pride and weight of family....

This book was excellent - told from the first daughter's point of view. She is the "heir" of the family - the firstborn - and she bears the pride and weight of the family name - a family who has been fishing on a small island for centuries. This book spans her lifetime from the time she was a child - and has a component of myth, legend and stories - that form the "foundation" for them as the island's "First family"

A truly enjoyable read!

One of the best books I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing, from an phenomenal author. The story carefully works it's own mythology into itself in a way that makes it familiar and believable. The story is simultaneously full of moments that make you sit on the edge of your seat and those that create a heartwarming tale of family and love. 10/10
