    Publisher's Summary:
Internationally best-selling author Cecelia Ahern's One Hundred Names is the story of secrets, second chances, and the hidden connections that unite our lives - a universal tale that will grip you with its emotional power and mesmerize you with its magic.
Scandal has derailed Journalist Kitty Logan's career, a setback that is soon compounded by an even more devastating loss. Constance, the woman who taught Kitty everything she knew, is dying. At her mentor's bedside, Kitty asks her - what is the one story she always wanted to write?
The answer lies in a single sheet of paper buried in Constance's office - a list of 100 names - with no notes or explanation. But before Kitty can talk to her friend, it is too late.
Determined to unlock the mystery and rebuild her own shaky confidence, Kitty throws herself into the investigation, using her skills and savvy to track down each of the names on the list and uncover their connection. Meeting these ordinary people and learning their stories, Kitty begins to piece together an unexpected portrait of Constance's life...and starts to understand her own.

    Predictable, but worth reading
Would you listen to One Hundred Names again? Why?
I will listen again, to look for subtleties I may have missed the first time around.
What was one of the most memorable moments of One Hundred Names?
The confrontation between an elderly woman and her long-time enemy. Enough said.
Have you listened to any of Amy Creightons other performances before? How does this one compare?
Have not listened to her before, but will be looking for her in the future.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, I did NOT want to listen to this all in one sitting. I found the central character far too self-important and self-pitying at the start, and almost put the book down. I suspect I reacted this way because I have been a journalist, and couldn't "get" why her focus was only on her self, and not on the damage she had done.
    Any additional comments?
There are some wonderfully memorable characters in this book - folks that I would like, in real life, to know.
    Great author, horrible book
Cecelia Ahern is my favorite author, but I did not like this book. It moved slowly and needed a good twist.

    Title: Save Me the Waltz
    Author: Zelda Fitzgerald

Length: 8 hrs and 37 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-18-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 30 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
Save Me the Waltz is the first and only novel by the wife of F. Scott Fitzgerald. During the years when Fitzgerald was working on Tender Is the Night, Zelda Fitzgerald was preparing her own story, which parallels the narrative of her husband, throwing a fascinating light on F. Scott Fitzgeralds life and work. In its own right, it is a vivid and moving story: the confessions of a famous, slightly doomed glamour girl of the affluent 1920s, which captures the spirit of an era.
    Members Reviews:
Love the unique style of Zelda Fitzgerald!
Zelda's writing style is very unique and can be hard to follow along at times, but I truly love this story and enjoy it more each time I read it!
Audio is a great platform for Zelda's writing--
Jennifer Van Dyck did a wonderful job; this is not a simple book, and I never felt tangled in metaphors or lost by the many accents she had to juggle. Only four stars because her choice of voice for Alabama had to grow on me, and Bonnie's never exactly grew on me at all, but a real consistent read!
There's more to be said for Zelda Fitzgerald than I am going to be able to fit into this review but this book touches the same place in my heart that "The Bell Jar" does-- vivid imagery and language used to detail a young woman's breakdown. Zelda in her lifetime never got the recognition for this work that she very much deserved. It is a good book which can become convoluted on the page alone, and I thought audio was an excellent medium to really bring the narrative into its best experience.
    Thinly Disguised Autobiography
What did you like best about Save Me the Waltz? What did you like least?
While researching the lives of Jazz Age flappers, I found that listening to the work of one would be helpful in understanding her better. This held true for Save Me the Waltz, as it is a barely disguised autobiography of her life married to F. Scott Fitzgerald. However, her prose is often stuffed with superfluous images and nonsensical similes and metaphors.
What about Jennifer Van Dycks performance did you like?
Jennifer Van Dyck's performance was agreeable. None of it bothered me but it was nothing remarkable.
Was Save Me the Waltz worth the listening time?
This was worth listening to from a researcher's point of view--not as someone looking for an engaging story.

    Publisher's Summary:
A remarkable debut that has been called a hybrid of Harper Lees To Kill a Mockingbird and Myla Goldbergs Bee Season, The Center of Everything is the fictional story of 10-year-old math prodigy Evelyn Bucknow. Living in Kansas with her single mother and deeply religious grandmother, Evelyn believes she is destined to marry Travis, the boy next door. But as she grows up, she experiences the heartbreak of a love not meant to be. Author Laura Moriarty was a recipient of the George Bennet Fellowship for Creative Writing at Phillips Exeter Academy.
    Members Reviews:
    A terrific coming-of-age novel
What made the experience of listening to The Center of Everything the most enjoyable?
I read this book when I was about the same age as Evelyn at the end. I found I could relate to Evelyn in particular, and (at the time) I couldn't wrap my head around her mother and grandother. Fast-forward more than ten years and a ton of life experience, I understand many of the secondary characters more than I did before. I loved this book 10 years ago, for its look at growing up in middle America; I LOVE it now for its complex and flawed characters and its look at opportunities, hard knocks, and making choices.
Which character as performed by Julie Dretzin was your favorite?
Julie Dretzin was a terrific choice of narrator for this book. Her voice is young and emotive, and her cast of characters was wonderful!
If you could take any character from The Center of Everything out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Evelyn, of course. She grows up so much in this book, and would grow up more in further pages. But besides her... probably Tina. She is tough, resilient, and wants to do her best for her children, even as she juggles the need to work and provide for two children of vastly different ages with vastly different needs.
    Any additional comments?
This book is a wonderful complex look at friendship, family and middle America. It's a character-driven novel, for sure, almost in a stream-of-consciousness style. Normally, this would drive me crazy, but Moriarty pulls this off - with its layers of determination and regret and choices and consequences - incredibly well.
Well-written, well-read, well worth the time!
    not religious fiction
Would you try another book from Laura Moriarty and/or Julie Dretzin?
    no on moriarty
What do you think your next listen will be?
    tracie peterson
Did Julie Dretzin do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
never could figure out the motivation behind some character actions
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
it was very depressing and used quite a bit of cursing. thus dulling my appreciation
    Any additional comments?
why was this book listed under religious fiction?

  • Radiance of Tomorrow Audiobook by Ishmael Beah

    Title: Radiance of Tomorrow
    Subtitle: A Novel
    Author: Ishmael Beah
    Narrator: Dion Graham
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 55 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-07-14
    Publisher: Macmillan Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 75 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
A haunting, beautiful first novel by the best-selling author of A Long Way Gone. When Ishmael Beah's A Long Way Gone was published in 2007, it soared to the top of best-seller lists, becoming an instant classic: a harrowing account of Sierra Leone's civil war and the fate of child soldiers that "everyone in the world should listen to". (The Washington Post). Now Beah, whom Dave Eggers has called, "arguably the most listened-to African writer in contemporary literature", has returned with his first novel, an affecting, tender parable about postwar life in Sierra Leone.
At the center of Radiance of Tomorrow are Benjamin and Bockarie, two longtime friends who return to their hometown, Imperi, after the civil war. The village is in ruins, the ground covered in bones. As more villagers begin to come back, Benjamin and Bockarie try to forge a new community by taking up their former posts as teachers, but they're beset by obstacles: a scarcity of food; a rash of murders, thievery, rape, and retaliation; and the depredations of a foreign mining company intent on sullying the town's water supply and blocking its paths with electric wires. As Benjamin and Bockarie search for a way to restore order, they're forced to reckon with the uncertainty of their past and future alike.
With the gentle lyricism of a dream and the moral clarity of a fable, Radiance of Tomorrow is a powerful audiobook about preserving what means the most to us, even in uncertain times.
    Critic Reviews:
"Dion Graham skillfully balances his presentation of this harrowing novel by the author of the bestselling memoir A LONG WAY GONE. The story is set in modern-day Sierra Leone after the civil war. Graham's lyrical delivery illustrates Beah's claim that he brings his country's oral tradition to his writing. The written and spoken word are both beautiful and horrifying as the elderly Mama Kadie and Pa Moiwa, along with others, return home to find their town destroyed, the only signs of its former residents the human bones scattered about." A dark story, beautifully told
Ishmael Beah has an excellent "voice". If Radiance of Tomorrow is an example of contemporary Sierra Leone literature I look forward to discovering more.
The book has the feel of a folk tale & is conveyed perfectly in audiobook format. By this I don't mean it is a "simple" story, but the telling conveys something of the culture of the characters in the book. The style of the writing adds depth to the story being told.
If you've read Ishmael Beah's memoir "A Long Way Gone" his novel will seem a lot more personal than many standard works of fiction. If you haven't read his memoir you probably ought to. Regardless, Radiance of Tomorrow stands alone as an incredible work.
The narration is superb. Overall a remarkable book.
    Amazing!
I loved every second of the novel. I wish I would have listened to the memoir first, but it will be my next read. I was sad when the novel ended.
It was a beautifully written novel and spoken performance.

A classic tale of brotherly love and rivalry from short story master Tobias Wolff.
Pete has always been successful. Happily married with two daughters, he lives a comfortable life in Santa Cruz. Pete is a practical, hardworking man and he enjoys life's monetary pleasures.
His younger brother, Donald, is a gaunt, troubled man. Unmarried and without children, Donald earns what little money he has by occasionally painting houses. He's a religious man, unlike Pete, and has spent several years as a member of various Christian groups.
When Pete receives a call from Donald, telling him that his most recent religious commune has failed, Pete decides to pick him up - a trip that will test the limits of the brothers' relationship.

    You'll feel Guilty of Voyerism
Tobias Wolff is the master of the short story and reading these stories makes you feel like you're looking through a keyhole into small dramatic moments of ordinary life. After reading these stories, you'll swear that you know these characters as people. He writes beautifully, but the language is so concealed in the story, that you're not aware of the words. If you haven't read short stories, give this a chance to see if you might get hooked.
Tobias Wolff is a fine story teller
Tobias Wolff is a fine story teller. The stories in this collection have Raymond Carver undertones with simplicity of everyday life and conversation. The stories don't actually end but leave the reader in the moment. Excellent.
    Three Stars
    its ok
Tobias Wolff is one of my favorites
An expert at making the reader feel what is written. In a very select group that includes writers like Ron Carlson.
    Arenât short stories amazing?
Arenât short stories amazing? As where a novel often times gives the reader time to lounge in another world, with different people and strange, yet sometimes familiar situations, a collection of short stories lets you peer in many windows. I think at some point most of us, at least the more curious of us, have sat on the Subway, or at Subway, and seen the various people and wonder what their story is. A collection of short stories allows you to act out that fantasy. That being said, Tobias Wolffâs 1985 collection of stories, BACK IN THE WORLD, gives glimpses of many characters and situations that play out in the Pacific Northwest. The best three, THE POOR ARE ALWAYS WITH US, DESERT BREAKDOWN 1968 and THE RICH BROTHER all involve cars to some degree, and the tentative bond that we have with each other. There are seven other, equally enjoyable stories, but itâs these three where Wolff shines. Wolffâs prose is like that of a Southern writer without the collection of grotesques, and without the Waspish sensibilities and Jewish insecurities of the Yates-Updike-Roth style. While not western, Wolff has given his own take on a unique American landscape, one populated with fog and ennui.

    Members Reviews:
Beautiful, Lost Girls of China . . . Part Two
The second in the Scavenger's Daughters series is just as good as the first . . . Benfu and Calla Lily are old now, but are still taking in baby girls that are abandoned, many of their adopted daughters now grown. Surrounded by the love of their many daughters, they still have never forgotten the first baby, their own little girl, Dahlia, stolen from them when she was a month old. Thirty years have passed, Is Dahlia still alive somewhere? There are so many layers to the story, going back to the Mao years in China. What happens when people buy into the evils of communism, dictatorship, class differences . . . and most of all what happens when people fail to LOVE . . . when there is no value for human life? All sorts of cruelty is unleashed. The story of a humble man, a scavenger (trash collector) and his wife in China and the girls they brought into their home to love . . . following the biggest LOSS of their own lives . . . is a story of healing . . . a story of struggling against the elements, against a corrupt system . . . and a story of recognizing true joy. . . a baby's smile . . . food for today . . . and enough love for one MORE little girl . . .
An exquisantly crafted bridge of this trilogy!
I loved "The Scavenger's Daughters" in and of itself. This second novel is a seamless progression in the family's narrative. No one is "left behind" and each person is relevant and grows as do living human beings.
I have mixed feelings about the next and final book, I fear that upon finishing I will mourn the loss of a relationship, like when contact is lost with friends / family relationships via untoward life events ( death, divorce, etc).
Heartwarming story with badly pronounced Chinese
Listening to stories like these always bring a smile to my face even though it deals with tough issues like gender inequality and oppression by the government. The only gripe I have with the audiobook is the bad Chinese pronunciation. The least the narrator can do is find out how to properly pronounce thank you (Xie Xie) and names of places (eg. Suzhou) in Chinese because the the recorded version is so mangled I could barely understand what they were trying to say.
    Reader Comments
After reading Tangled Vines I am encouraged to be a loving and protective parent to my own kids when I have them someday.

    Publisher's Summary:
I was twenty-nine-years-old when the Arno flooded its banks on Friday, November 4, 1966. On Tuesday I decided to go to Italy, to offer my services as a humble book conservator, to save whatever could be saved, including myself.
The Italians called them "Mud Angels," the young foreigners who came to Florence in 1966 to save the city's treasured art from the Arno's flooded banks. American volunteer Margot Harrington was one of them, finding her niche in the waterlogged library of a Carmelite convent. Within its walls she discovered a priceless Renaissance masterwork: a sensuous volume of sixteen erotic poems and drawings.
Inspired to sample each of the ineffable sixteen pleasures, Margot embarks on the intrigue of a lifetime with a forbidden lover and the contraband volume - a sensual, life-altering journey of loss and rebirth in this exquisite audiobook of spiritual longing and earthly desire.
    Members Reviews:
    Favorite book of all time.
This is my favorite comfy book ever. I love Robert Hellenga's work and have all his books. But the Sixteen Pleasures is a favorite because I remember being in elementary school when the flood occurred. I remember my teacher commenting that the Italians "didn't deserve to have all that art if they didn't have the sense to take care of it". Why I remembered that I have no idea, but it seemed so wrong at the time. Then a few years later I visited Europe for the 1st time in the summer of 1970, with a group of students and fell in love for the last time....with the people, the art, the gritty place Italy was back in those days.
Robert Hellegna seems to love it in much the same way, and conveys the contradictory nature of the country itself...all loving and yelling and saintly and divinely hedonistic. I just love this book on a rainy day or any other kind of day. Wish someone would make a movie of it but would probably wreck it. Love love LOVE this book.
The beginning of my Hellenga trip
I read this book when it came out and I've remembered it ever since and I've read all of Hellenga's books as they come out. He is a master story teller and as other reviewers have said, I, too, have given away several copies of this book when I hear someone is going to Florence or Bologna (Fall of a Sparrow). I love all of them but probably this one the most since it was my first of his novels. I'll not go into details or plot or reasons because the other 5 star reviewers have already done so. I just want to contribute a 5 star rating and I'd do the same for all of them and now in August 2014 I've ordered his latest as well. Can't wait to read it.
years later, it is still the one
When I learned a close friend was traveling to Florence, I hurried to get this book for her. I remembered it very well so many years later, the vivid writing, the fascinating descriptions, the carefully developed characters and the enveloping story. Recently I read 1/3 of a current "best seller" and was so depressed I thought I would have to give up reading fiction. Then I pulled this little pleasure up again and thought perhaps it is just time to go back to some of my old favorites. This would be one of those.
    It Gets My Recommendation
Great plot and characters.... Based on a true happening in Florence 50 years ago. The Arno flooded and many US students went to help rescue works of art.

    Manual for men turning 90.
What made the experience of listening to Memories of My Melancholy Whores the most enjoyable?
My first book from Senor Marquis was "Chronicles Of A Death Foretold". It was in a Playboy Magazine great books review. That was 25 years ago, and I have not missed a word he has written since. This book is further testimony of his great skill and eloquence with language and the powerful range of events he has lived or seen lived and sculptured in poetic, exotic colors and sounds of a rain forest.
What other book might you compare Memories of My Melancholy Whores to and why?
    see above.
What about Thom Riveras performance did you like?
He captured well the voice and rhythm of GGM.!
If you could rename Memories of My Melancholy Whores, what would you call it?
Excercise Manual For Men Of 90 Years
    Any additional comments?
    Read it.
Alright but to Melodramatic and Self Centered
As a Cuban it's PC for me to say that Spanish writers tend to be way to melodramatic and with too big an air of self-importance. What saves the story is that it is leveled off with the honesty of some of the characters imperfections and insecurities. Not really my kind of story but had to try because of the "legend" of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. But legend or not the story about a "dirty" old man is more pitiful than great.
    What a weird story
What did you like best about Memories of My Melancholy Whores? What did you like least?
I didn't like the idea that the guy wanted to have sex with a young virgin, but I did like that in the end he didn't do it.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I have no idea. Honestly, I loved the writing, but the subject matter was a little squicky. I don't know if I could change it and still keep anything similar.
What does Thom Rivera bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
I liked his rusty voice. It made picturing the character easier.
Was Memories of My Melancholy Whores worth the listening time?
Ultimately, yes. It wasn't a long book, and it was interesting, if not the most favorable material.
    Any additional comments?
Not as good as the other Gabriel Garcia Marquez works!
    Fascinting but Disturbing
What disappointed you about Memories of My Melancholy Whores?
Pictures formed in my mind of wrinkled hands of a 90yr old man caressing a 14yr old girl made me cringe throughout the book. What is more disturbing is the implication that the girl is initially hurt by the old man not having "de-flowered" her in their first naked meeting!! Rather than relieved!! And it goes on with this narcissistic illusions of this old man with the woman-pimp informing him that the girl is madly in love with him.
