Decent, but definitely a sequel

There's no question that in terms of listening time (10 hours), this delivers good value, which is important for those of us who listen to lots of audiobooks. The narration is pretty good, and the story moves along nicely.

However, I kept feeling like there were details missing - things I was supposed to know about the characters but didn't; an assumed depth to the main characters that certainly wasn't contained in the text itself; and to be honest I didn't quite figure out what the main villain of the piece was supposed to have done (to have been thrown in jail and treated like poison by the rest of the characters) until about hour 6.

Then I did some research and found out that this book was an unplanned sequel to a first book by Steve Jackson, called The Mentor. (There's supposed to be a third book in the series, but apparently it was to have been published in 2008 and it's Aug 2009 now and I don't think it's out yet.)

The story is good, but I think it would have been much better had I read the first one. And the ending isn't particularly satisfying, but I think that's because the REAL ending - the Big Scene - will come in the third book.

So if you've read the first book, by all means get this one. And if you sometimes choose audiobooks for length, you should also get this one, because it's perfectly serviceable. But otherwise, this isn't going to be the best book you've heard all year.

Outstanding Finale

As Anderson and another reviewer have already commented, this Ludlum novel did have distracting passages that almost read like essays, and since we don't know where Ludlum left off before he died and someone else took over for him, I would like to suggest another possibility to this departure from his usual treatment. Authors who want to lend authenticity to their stories do far more research than they can actually use in a story. Often, in the first draft, they include everything -- its called overwriting -- until they are ready to revise. And then they edit back unwieldy descriptions in favor of keeping the story and pace moving forward. Ludlum may have died before he could do this, but in leaving his research in, the editor has left us with another Ludlum legacy.

If we were to separate these passages from the main story line, we would have an extraordinary thesis on today's terrorists--he described their warped mindset--what motivates them, their history, their homelands, their grievances, their hopes and dreams. Ludlum provides needed insight into today's enemy, and that's always been his greatest power--his books have not only thrilled us, they have educated us about so many things--government structures we never experience, about people we never meet in our daily lives, and now at the end, he helps us see America the way terrorists see us--from the oppressed to those deluded with power, whether on the side of the enemy or within our own ranks of government and commerce. He has created characters we want to meet again, and for his last work, what a memory to leave with us if that is not the case. Paul Janson and Jessica Kincaid--today's hero and heroine--the kind our world needs in a time when trust is threatened.

Ludlum did not disappoint his fans. This is an amazing book that reveals nothing until the last chapter and even then the suspense does not let up until the last page. If Ludlum has succeeded in training a few authors to complete outlines of novels he created before he died, we can only welcome their continuing contributions in his memory, and more power to their own works, but it would be nice to give these writers the recognition they so richly deserve. On that, I agree whole heartedly with a few other reviewers here.

Another great Ludlium book

This book seems to have so many unrelated events, characters, and flashbacks that I was tempted to fast read ahead and skip a lot. Do not do this. As you pass halfway things start to come together and ends with one of the most interesting plots of any novel. There is so much said about people, relationships, governments, good, bad, evil, greed, and life.

I commented on this before but dont remember a reply.I was sent Kolyma written in the German language, this baffels me as i do not speak or read the German language. Someone screwed up, maybe it was me by my order.Is this book available in English? I would like a reply as i have read his other books and really like to read Kolyma.

Incredible, suspenseful read

What a complex story woven around something we already know hasn't happened! This is such a suspenseful book, full of totally incredible, but believable twists and turns, that I could hardly put it down. It's definitely Cuba through and through. Fascinating! I found myself rooting for the impossible--all the way to the (very satisfying) ending.

An anti-ideological political thriller

A secretive non-governmental organization called the Orchid has undertaken the Havana Project--an international conspiracy to remove Fidel Castro. Ex-CIA agent Carolina Aznar Perez, recruited seven years before, has been assigned to smuggle the weapon into Cuba. She is well-suited to the role. Not only is she a onetime spook; she is also the daughter of fugitives from Castro's island paradise. Her uncle Roberto Aznar, or "as he was known in émigré circles, the Grand One," is an anti-Castro leader of the "Miami Diaspora." Carolina has been raised on the belief that "[i]f what you did ultimately helped people--the Cuban people especially--then it had God's blessing."

In Cuba, meanwhile, Carlos Arroyo Gutierrez has been selected to carry out the murder. Minister of Health and Castro's personal physician for six years, Carlos is well-placed to realize the long-deferred dreams of the anticastroistas. Not only do monthly checkups leave him alone with el Comandante; he too has become an opponent of the regime. An "enormous hatred" has been growing in him compounded of horror, the murder of dissidents and suspected counter-revolutionaries, "the constant fear, the cascade of lies," with Castro's secret police "at the center of it all."

Merullo stitches the two panels of the plot tightly together, alternating between Carolina's and Carlos's part in it while turning aside occasionally to glance at a Communist official, another conspirator, or a traitor. If there are no pleasingly round characters the reason is that Merullo has rejected E. M. Forster's famous advice in "Aspects of the Novel" "to pot with plot, break it up, boil it down." He has written a thriller precisely because it is one of the few contemporary genres that relies upon plot in the old sense of a scheme to achieve some unwelcome end. Character is reduced to drama rather than drama (whatever drama there is) rising like waves of heat from character.

But why a political thriller? If a political novel is one in which ideology plays a dominant role then "Fidel's Last Days" is not a political novel.

Stupidity unbound

Well written, and beautifully narrated, the plot seemed to be an exercise in stupidity. One has to worry about the intelligence of an intelligence agent giving the full details of a mission to the idiot he is supposed to be protecting, especially when the so-called "messiah" of the masses appears to have the survival instincts of a mayfly. Perhaps due to my age and gender, I am of the mind that it is very hard to continue to be interested in both subject and agent when both are determined to screw up at every available opportunity.

A suspenseful look at the reality of work in counter-intelligence

Sohail Din, a young Pakistani-British man, has postponed entry into law school for a year to serve as an undercover source for MI5. His agent runner, Liz Carlyle, returns from leave to find that Din has reported a visit by a notorious radical Pakistani imam to the Islamist bookstore where he works. There, the sheikh met with three young British men of Pakistani origin who are suspected of radical sympathies.

Suddenly, the inter-agency Counter-Terrorist Committee finds itself with a high-priority case. The Committee links MI5 (the Security Service) with MI6 (Secret Intelligence Service), GCHQ (Britainâs NSA), the Metropolitan Police (Scotland Yard), and the Home Office (Britainâs Justice Department). Dame Stella Rimington served in Britainâs Security Service (MI5) from 1969 to 1996. In the course of her career, she served in every major field of responsibility. She became director in succession of all three branches and became Director General in 1995. She turned to fiction in 2004 at the age of 69.

Vor Jahren mein erstes Buch von Brown - geborgt - und nun noch einmal nach ein paar Jahren nachgelesen als eBook - viel Spannung bis zum Schluß!
