    Exciting
My first Baldacci experience and I am sure I will repeat it - a thrilling ride that, if reading it, would be described as a real page-turner! I thought I would find the intricate detail boring but was fascinated. When nearing the end of the book I wondered how all the threads would be tied up - while they were satisfactorily resolved, it seemed that Mr Baldacci himself got bored with the detail and gave the ending a very broad brush.
    Hell's Corner
More twists than a very long corkscrew, well up to his usual standard. Unplug the telephone, sink into a comfy armchair and enjoy the ride

    A PULSE-POUNDING NONSTOP THRILLER!
Jack Higgins is a reliable, workmanlike author who cranked out a score or more books like this back in the 70's and 80's. Starting with "The Eagle Has Landed" (hereafter "Eagle"), he wrote like a factory, producing a great many almost identical thrillers, only a few of which really measured up to "Eagle". This book, "Day of Judgement", is a work that, in my opinion, meassures up to, and in some waays surpasses "Eagle". Set at the height of the Cold War, "Day of Judgement's" plot focuses on an East German effort to deflect the impact of US President John F. Kennedy's forthcoming visit to Berlin, where history tells us he made his electrifying "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech. The East Germans want to nullify the projected effect of Kennedy's visit, so they kidnap a beloved Roman Catholic priest and try to "brainwash" him into making anti-US statements.. Great character development, excellent pacing, a very plausable series of events and a suprisingly spiritual resolution of the story add up to an all-around great read. I recommend this book highly.
    I love Jack Higgins!!
This book by Jack Higgins,(as well as the Dougal Munro series and Storm Warning)grabs your attention and doesn't let it go. Highly enjoyable, if that is your goal in fiction reading! I know JH books aren't for everyone: they are often quick on the description and huge amounts of plot fly by in a chapter, but nobody writes like him. This story, that takes place in East Germany before Kennedy visits Berlin in 1963, is a little far fetched, but I find myself preferring Higgin's books to some thrillers where if the unnecessary description were 'squeezed' out, the book would be reduced by half! I do enough fact based scientific and medical reading for my work; away from that I need escapism and JH provides this with some interesting charactors and locations. If you are obsessed with detailed fact in FICTION, then so be it. But I like the exciting, unlikely thriller plots of Higgin's.....they're more enjoyable

Poor, Poor Example of Author's Work.
Let me start by saying I am a big fan of Jack Higgins, I have 9 more books purchased and not yet read, but this book is awful. I should have looked at the ratings before I bought and noticed the lack of 5 star ratings. I was lost from page one, not knowing the "good guys" from the "bad guys". Throughout this book I have not know what was going on, but figuring if I kept reading it would 'come together', which if it did, it was very minimal. But I read every word so I could do a review so that hopefully others won't buy a poor book when Jack Higgins has so many good books out there to buy and read.
    Good book to read anytime.
Good book, with a different ending than led to expect. The author used the same basic theme for the main character as he did in another book. However, it worked as well with this story as it did with the other book. I highly recommend Mr. Higgins
If you like Higgins, you'll enjoy
The Savage Day ISBN 9781453200438, Open Road Integrated Medi, e-book format by Jack Higgins is another of the author's thrillers.
Simon Vaughan is languishing in a Greek prison awaiting possible execution for gun running, among other activities. Brigadier Harry Ferguson of the Royal British Armed Forces arrives and offers him a release if he will take on the IRA in Northern Ireland. He acquiesces, and sets off on a perilous journey to attempt to retrieve a gold cache the IRA has stolen plus associated other assignments. The action, as always, is never ending with several plot twists along the way.
Simply put, if you like Jack Higgins, you'll enjoy this one. Reviewed by John H. Manhold, award winning fiction/non-fiction author.

i have read several of higgins books over the years; some were very good, some weak but this one was a very entertaining read; well written, great ending & a good story about troubles in ireland with the IRA & the british; maybe the best higgins book i have read so if you like higgins, i recomend this one for your reading pleasure
    A not so savage day.
The first half of this novel rated at least a 4. Gun running, behind-the-scenes conspiracy, etc. The second half of the novel was a different story, and rated a 2. The magical events that occurred to allow our hero to succeed were astounding beyond belief. It was a struggle to give The Savage Day a 3 overall.

Nick McDonell found instant acclaim for his first novel, Twelve, which he wrote at age 17. Here McDonell pens a fascinating thriller that Publishers Weekly likens to le Carrés better works.
American intelligence agent Mike Teak recently graduated from Harvard. His first assignment involves delivering supplies to Somalian freedom fighter Hatashil. But moments after the exchange, Hatashils camp is destroyed, and Mike starts to suspect he was a pawn all along.

    Unrealized potential
An Expensive Education is more than the sum of its parts, which is fortunate but makes it difficult to write a review that reflects its nature. For an author whose talent was lauded at a very early age, the writing is sometimes painfully immature. He is overly expository in early going, especially when he rushes to introduce every aspect of a character upon their first appearance. The plot - a 21st-century twist on the 70s-cinema themes of political subterfuge, double-cross and nesting dolls of suspicion - is ripe for a more involved treatment than it actually receives. The characters, of which there are just a few too many, are usually little more than tools to advance the plot around three major players: a painfully unlikable caricature of a precious Harvard newspaper writer and aspiring intellectual, her African-born boyfriend who is self-aware yet still itching to assimilate, and a CIA operative whose conscience belies his mission. Of those, only David - the boyfriend, a stranger in a strange land that he years to adopt - has any measurable complexity.
Nonetheless, this story compels. In an industry overwhelmed by kiddie vampire novels, ham-fisted Brownian adventure tales and disposable serial-killer mysteries, An Expensive Education dares to raise social, political and personal questions in the context of a page-turning thriller. You're unlikely to put it down midstream, but equally unlikely to feel satisfied when it's over. Ultimately, its great shame is its vast unrealized potential - McDonell has barely scratched the surface of his own creative notions and raises a most interesting literary questions: is he bumping against the limitations of his own talent, or afraid to tread in the places where noir pulp evolves into something more interesting?

I enjoyed this book and it was fun to follow the various characters move between Harvard and Africa, If you went to Harvard (I did not) you must read this.
NYT review was a little too glowing
Good, not great writer; the NYT critic made it seem as though the author's command of a Harvard student's jarson was special.
Plot-- many venues, interweaving different people, but so what.
Good beach reading;not going to keep you up past midnight.
not bad for a 2nd or 3rd book.
    Overrated
Everything about this book was superficial and cynical. I did not like it at all, nor did I think that it was particularly well written. The characters were not well developed.
    Overhyped; Way Overhyped
I may have liked this book more if the author hadn't been compared to Greene, LeCarre, Hammett, Hemingway, Barth, Bellow, Roth and Updike on the book jacket. He isn't. This is the stuff you find on the shelf at the airport or grocery store.

Seemingly by chance they bump into a Russian millionaire called Dima who owns a peninsula and a diamond-encrusted gold watch. He also has a tattoo on his right thumb, and wants a game of tennis.
But he wants something else too, something which propels the young lovers on a tortuous journey through Paris to a safe house in the Swiss Alps, to the murkiest cloisters of the City of London and its unholy alliance with Britains Intelligence Establishment. John le Carré reads his own taut, suspenseful tale of dirty money and dirtier politics.

    Simply superb!
What made the experience of listening to Our Kind of Traitor the most enjoyable?
The story in itself, and the author's magnificent reading voice and style.
What other book might you compare Our Kind of Traitor to and why?
Any Daniel Silva novel. First rate, always.
Have you listened to any of John Le Carres other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, this is the first time.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I was impressed and enjoyed every minute of it. No laghter or tears: The genre is not suited to either emotion, but the humour is there,of course!
    Any additional comments?
A splendid performance. Worth every penny.
    a little jewel
I'm a great fan of John LeCarre's work, I normally buy the BBC dramatisations with the outstanding Simon Russell-Beale in the lead role. I was somewhat nervous about buying a narrated book, both abridged and read by the author but I needn?t have worried. The delivery, pace and length combine perfectly to produce an absorbing and impactful listen. I'd recommend this to any John LeCarre fan.
Another gripping story from Le Carre
This is another tale from Le Carre which expresses his anger at the way in which Government and politics is conducted, this time in respect of financial matters and its connection to the City of London (as opposed to counter terrorism and military engagement as in recent books). However, I couldn't help feeling that the ending was a little rushed, and did not match the pace of the book. Without wanting to give too much away, in my view the ending is also open to interpretation as to who was complicit and to what extent, which I quite enjoyed (though others may find it slightly unsatisfying).
The two protagonists, Gail and Perry, are quite well drawn, as are some of the secondary ones such as their main intelligence contact, Luke.
I enjoy Le Carre's narration despite the book being abridged, though I will probably listen to the unabridged version in due course.
    Le Carre, say no more.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Oh yes. Masterful book written by a master.
What did you like best about this story?
It is difficult to seperate the story from the story teller. It is such a complete package Excellent and believable story, wonderfully crafted with excellent narration.
Have you listened to any of John Le Carres other performances? How does this one compare?
I have listened to may Le Carre books and the narration has always been very good. This was is narrated by the master himself.

    Publisher's Summary:
In The Bell Ringers, England in the near future appears largely unchanged. There are concerns over the threat of terrorism, the press is feisty, and the prime minister is soon to call a general election. But quietly - and largely unknown to the public or even most in government - things have become undeniably Orwellian: cameras with license plate recognition software record every car's movements, and a sophisticated, top-secret data-mining system known as Deep Truth combs through personal records, identifying violators of minor laws as well as those disposed to "antigovernment" beliefs. In the interest of security, the divide between private and public has crumbled. Freedom has given way to control.
David Eyam was once the prime minister's head of intelligence. He was one of those who knew about Deep Truth, but he suffered a fall from grace and then died in a terrorist bombing. Now his former lover, Kate Lockhart, has been named as the benefactor of his estate. But Eyam has left her more than just his wealth; Kate is also the heir to his dangerous secrets and unfinished business. The full power of the out-of-control, security-obsessed state comes down on Kate, but with the help of the secret resistance known as the Bell Ringers, hope for freedom is not lost.

    Fantastic Political Thriller
It reads like a great British television drama script, and Porter does a wonderful job of making George Orwell a prophet. John Lee does his usual outstanding performance.

This book was one that I had thought about listening to for a while, I would check out the reviews and then move on to something else, at some point I just downloaded it and gave it a try. I am glad that I did, it is a good read and will keep the miles rolling if you listen to books during your commute as I do.
The narrationn is good and the story moves along very well and unfolds to build a good amount of suspense in the ending. This is one read that will not dissapoint you.

    Publisher's Summary:
The past erupts into the present when the police arrest Alexei Volkovoy, known as Volk, at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport and take him to a murder scene. At first, the dead man appears to be just one more victim of Moscow's out-of-control violence. But Volk soon discovers that he is a famous Hollywood filmmaker whose reputation was destroyed in 1995 when the CIA released decrypted documents from the Venona cables---the top-secret American and British crypto-analysis of Soviet messages that implicated the Rosenbergs, Alger Hiss, Kim Philby, and hundreds of other Soviet spies. Tucked inside the American's pocket is a marked-up Venona intercept that refers to a Russian used as a spy by the Americans, a man who may have been Volk's illustrious father. Aided by his female partner, Valya, Volk's only hope to clear his family name will be to solve this murder and discover how the Venona papers relate to his father's disappearance, while powerful forces want to keep him from investigating the past and to remove him from the present.

    Critic Reviews:
"The Venona Cable packs more punch than a trunk full of C4.... An intelligently written, pulse-pounding thriller that everyone will be talking about." (Brad Thor, New York Times bestselling author of The Apostle)
    Members Reviews:
A departure, but still a strong thiller
The Venona Cable departs from the storyline established in the first two Volk novels. Instead of battling with his past in the context of a present conflict, Volk is battling with his father's past, seeking to learn the truth about the man he never knew. When Volk's father defected to the United States, was he a traitor or a double agent working for Moscow?
Volk is dispatched to the US to learn why an American was murdered in Volk's Moscow warehouse while attempting to deliver to Volk a copy of a World War II era cable (one of the Venona cables which, if you Google the subject, will lead you to an intriguing real world story of espionage). While in the US, Volk must unravel the secret of the cable, its connection to current day spy networks (both Russian and American), and its relationship to his father. The story is therefore more in the vein of a conventional spy thriller than its predecessors. The violence in this novel is toned down a bit (although there's still a fair amount of mayhem as Volk repeatedly fights for his life), Volk's partner Valya and his boss the General play backstage roles, and American spy Brock Matthews, who turns up only collaterally in the first two novels, plays a central role in this one.
As do the first two, this novel works nicely as a thriller, maintaining a steady pace that increases to a frenzy as the novel nears its end. The Venona Cable would be an enjoyable read without having read the first two Volk novels, but you would have deeper insight into Volk's character if you read the first two before reading this one.
    Twisting and turning
A convoluted tale of spies within spies built around a one legged invincible protagonist with feet in both camps. Hard for a man with one leg. An enjoyable romp.
    Smashing success
Another smashing success in the Volk series by Brent Ghelfi. This book delves into the past of Volk's father, who mysteriously defected to the U.S.

    Not much happening ....
I am an avid reader of the Bernie Gunther saga ( by Philip Kerr) which takes mostly place in the pre-war Nazi Germany. Same atmosphere , same background as in Zoo Station, but all this is depicted with a brilliance that David Downing sadly lacks. While Philip Kerr can leverage on this extremely dramatic environment to add intensity and force to the story plot, Downing writes a mousy story set out in a depressing background.
Looking forward the next Bernie's book.....
    Well plotted and absorbing story
David Downing has written four books set in Nazi Germany, featuring jounalist John Russell. this is the first in the series. All are very well written, and capture brilliantly the paranoia of what life must have been like, and the constant compromises one had to make to survive. Although low key, the book is superbly plotted with interlocking stories and builds up to a tense finale.
Superb narration by John Prebble greatly enhances enjoyment of the book.
    Warmly recommended.

A very very good book that portrays the horrors of pre war Germany and Hitlers persecution of the Jews, while the rest of Germany carries on as normal.
First book by this author I have listened too and look forward to his other books.
Up to now going of the star ratings of all books I have read I have enjoyed all the books and been introduced to many different authors
    Decent
Not bad, the atmosphere is well-captured and it's fairly written, but the story itself seemed somewhat unidimensional. Simon Prebble was a joy to listen to though, as always.
One thing to note if audible or the producer is monitoring these reviews, there's a strange reintroduction with title and author part way through the book (I believe it was at about the five hour remaining mark). For a moment it was confusing as I wondered if something had gone wrong and I was missing the rest of the book.
Berlin before the outbreak of World War 2
This is a very interesting and very well written book that has completely captured my interest. The central character is a veteran English journalist John Russell, living and working in Berlin as part of the press corps in 1939 - he was previously married to a German and has a son Paul, who is to all intents a young German. The storyline vividly brings to life the poisonous atmosphere in Berlin the year tat war breaks out - with the persecution of the Jews and other sections of society, and the helplessness of these people in the face of oppression under Nazism.

Had the possibility to be great....but no such luck.
Having just finished the book a few hours ago, I wanted to write this review while the story was still fresh in my mind. Free Agent was a novel that truly had the possibility to be an espionage classic, perhaps even to rival the works of John Le Carre. However I say strongly IT had the possibility to be great, but unfortunately it doesn't come close to the glory of reviews it received on the back cover. The story pretense itself is quite interesting; a KGB man wants to defect with information concerning a traitor with in British Intelligence. This is where Paul Dark the novels protagonist comes in, but there's one catch Dark is the traitor who the KGB man wants to expose, or so we believe. This itself in my opinion is a brilliant plot line that under the right writer could have become the Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy of the early twenty-first century.
However Mr. Duns is not that writer and Free Agent is not that novel. This book at times felt like one of those bad Bond movies, where nothing works correctly and the viewer is left feeling empty at the end. The novel's character's themselves are not fully drafted, more than a few seem as if they were created just for the fact the author believed they needed to be there. Dark, himself seems to be a rather un-likeable character that certainly has the potential to grow in the novel to come Free Country and whatever else follows. I don't want to give away to much, but the entire side plot with Harold Wilson and the attempted assassination and coup definitely didn't belong in the story what so ever, but seemed to be put in with the hopes of adding excitement to a deafening story. I will be truthful and say that I had to push myself to read the last hundred pages or so, because by that time I truthfully didn't care what happened. The last two chapter's did however somewhat make-up for the past hundred and something pages but not by much.
To me it seemed that the only parts of the book I truly may have enjoyed where the first two chapters and possibly the last two, because everything in between was simply trash.
    Not for me.
I really struggled to finish this book which was a most disappointing read wherein I turned each page expecting the purpose to become clear. This never happened for me and led to an unsatisfying finish. I also found the characters to be one dimensional and never dealt with in any depth.
