Title: The Birth of the Church

    Format: Original Recording
    Length: 49 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-16-17
    Publisher: Logos Bible Study
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Bibles
    Publisher's Summary:
St. Paul dominates in the New Testament. Thirteen of the twenty-seven books of the New Testament are attributed to him, and during three missionary journeys, he managed to evangelize all of Asia Minor and a major part of Europe.
Today, St. Paul is viewed as the apostle who worked tirelessly to spread the gospel in the ancient world. Yet, Paul began as the great persecutor of the Church. After the stoning of Stephen, it was Paul who stood at the head of the crowd giving approval to his death, and it was Paul who received letters from the high priest granting him authority to go to Damascus, round up believers and have them put to death.
How Paul moves from the great persecutor of the Church to become one of its greatest saints is a tremendous story, and no one can tell it better than Dr. Creasy!
    Editorial Reviews:
Dr. Bill Creasy of Logos Bible Study uses a literary, historical approach to examine and enliven the bible for modern listeners. Dr. Creasy draws on his studies, travels, and personal anecdotes to vividly depict the works of scripture. He speaks in a pleasant, friendly voice but with authority, frequently incorporating contemporary references. The programs are a lively combination of a sermon and college lecture.
In this episode, Dr. Creasy discusses The Birth of the Church.

    Publisher's Summary:
Titus is classified among Pauls letters, but I put it in this lesson before turning to the General Epistles. The General Epistles are all those correspondences written by anyone other than Paul: Hebrews, once attributed to Paul, is now attributed to an anonymous author, someone in Pauls inner circle; James is attributed to James, the Lords brother and the leader of the church in Jerusalem (Galatians 1: 19); 1 & 2 Peter are attributed to the Apostle Peter; 1,2,3 John are attributed to the Apostle John; and Jude is attributed to Jude, another of the Lords brothers (Matthew 13: 55).

Publisher: Now You Know Media Inc.

    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Bibles
    Publisher's Summary:
Women have always been central to the faith. In the Bible, women have played vital and often surprising roles. To understand these remarkable women, we are honored to bring you one of our most highly regarded scholars and teachers, Professor Barbara Reid, OP, PhD.
Professor Reid begins this series by exploring the creation stories in Genesis 1 and 2, examining how God created male and female equally in the divine image.
Turning to the New Testament, you will look first at Mary, the mother of Jesus. Explore Mary, especially through the Gospels of Luke and John.
Professor Reid explores Jesus' friendship with Mary and Martha. Meet the women disciples named in the Gospels: Mary Magdalene and the other women who accompanied Jesus on mission, who ministered with him in Galilee, and who followed him to Jerusalem, where they witnessed his death and burial. These women were the first to discover the empty tomb and to see the risen Christ.
In the Pauline communities, women held leadership positions in ministry. Examine some strongly egalitarian texts in Paul's letters, such as Galatians 3:28: "No more Jew or Greek, slave or free, male and female." Other texts, such as "women keep silent in church" (1 Cor 14:34-36), seem contrary to what Paul says elsewhere. Sr. Reid will help you try to sort out some of the complexity in Paul's thinking on women.
Finally, you will focus not on a text that has female characters but on a text that often is misconstrued to reinforce the suffering and subordination of women.
Jesus' saying in Mark 8:34, "Whoever wants to be my disciple must take up their cross and come follow me", is often interpreted by women to mean that they should bear every kind of suffering, even that which comes from abuse or injustice, as their way of carrying the cross with Jesus. Explore the saying in its Gospel context along with another image from the Gospel of John, which could be more freeing.

    Publisher's Summary:
Although the primary meaning of what a prophet says always emerges from the historical context in which he writes, what he says will sometimes foreshadow messianic or eschatological (end time) events. It is our responsibility as educated readers of Scripture to determine when such foreshadowing occurs and when it does not.

    Length: 53 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-05-17
    Publisher: Logos Bible Study
Ratings: 2 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Bibles
    Publisher's Summary:
The Minor Prophets are minor because they are shorter in length than the Major Prophets, not because they are less important: Isaiah is 66 chapters long; Obadiah is 1 chapter.
All of the Minor Prophets write during the time of the kings, 1050 586 B.C., or after the return from Babylonian Captivity, 539 430 B.C. Most tell us when they are active. Hosea, for example, begins: The word of the Lord that came to Hosea son of Beeri during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah (Hosea 1: 1). That is the same time during which Isaiah takes place, and the historical context for Hosea is the same as that of Isaiah: The Assyrian conquest of the northern kingdom of Israel in 722 B.C. and the Assyrian attack against Judah and Jerusalem in 701 B.C.
Remember, a prophet always writes into his own historical context, and the primary meaning we draw from what he says always emerges from that historical context.

    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Bibles
    Publisher's Summary:
Jewish Bibles classify Daniel among the Writings, not the Prophets; Christian Bibles elevate Daniel to the position of a major prophet. Daniel is taken captive to Babylon after its first attack on Jerusalem in 605 B.C. Daniels book is set in Babylon and spans the years 605 539 B.C.
A great story, Daniel is also a major source of Christian messianic prophecy, with Jesus taking his self-referential title Son of Man from Daniel 7: 13-14 and also referencing Daniel concerning the end times: So when you see standing in the holy place the abomination that causes desolation, spoken of through the prophet Daniel (Matthew 24: 15).
