Title: The Revelation of St. John the Divine

Author: Naxos AudioBooks

Narrator: Heathcote Williams

Format: Abridged

Length: 1 hr and 19 mins

Language: English

Release date: 12-17-09

Publisher: Naxos AudioBooks

Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 5 votes

Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Bibles

Publisher's Summary:

The theme of revelation is apocalypse: the end of the world and the coming of Christ in judgment. The date of the composition was probably some time in the A.D. 90s. One of the most controversial and quoted texts of the New Testament, The Revelation of St. John the Divine has inspired and troubled artists, poets, and seers through the ages.

Editorial Reviews:

The Revelation is a sobering work, and Heathcote Williams's narration of the Authorized, or King James, translation is a nice match of reader and text. The tone for the work is set by excerpts from Benjamin Britten's "War Requiem," which begins and ends the narration. Williams's voice is controlled and evenly modulated. The right amount of inflection provides emphasis but is never overdone.

An Example for Other Biblical Narrators to Follow

It is incredibly difficult to find a GOOD narration of the King James Bible - Heathcote Williams is an exception. Why? Let me count the ways:

1) an English accent is psychologically demanded by this Southerner in order to fully enter into the historical beauty of this translation - his is such an one;

2) the ability to appropriately "bring the characters to life" and to portray the emotions hinted to in the various contexts is what often makes or breaks the narrator - Mr. Williams has such an ability;

3) the serious listener desires a dramatic rendition, yet with lack of flippancy - such is the case here.

I will not go so far as to say that it is a perfect narration, but given the many narrators I've tried, Mr. Williams is by far the closest to the ideal that I have long sought after...my only real complaint is that he has not narrated more of the King James Bible.

Apocrypha, Part 2

This is part 2 of 4 that centers upon the books of the Apocrypha's. Narration is good and clear. A slight history of each book is explained prior to the full reading. I am learning about a part of the Bible that is not provided by protestant churches.

Disappointing translation

The contemporary English translation was hollow and trite. I believe the vocabulary level should be elevated well above middle school level. Also, the actual contents of this volume (19) is Wisdom of Solomon and Sirach.

Feminized

Sirach is pretty clearly not a feminist throughout his writings save this translation as far as I can tell. In Verse 33:19 the CEV includes the word husband as someone not to give one's power over to, so as to say that a wife should not give anything she owns to him, or any of her power to her husband. It seems to encourage outright insubordination between all parties. If we accept the tenth commandment ( Exodus 20:17; Deuteronomy 5:21) a wife is her husband's property, nothing she has is really her's, not her children, not her clothes, not even her womb. Not saying women of the OT didn't have rights, but they were and still are the property of their husbands, and if not married, their father. Patriarchy Rules!!

Give not thy son and wife, thy brother and friend, power over thee while thou livest, and give not thy goods to another: lest it repent thee, and thou intreat for the same again. As long as thou livest and hast breath in thee, give not thyself over to any. For better it is that thy children should seek to thee, than that thou shouldest stand to their courtesy. In all thy works keep to thyself the preeminence; leave not a stain in thine honour. At the time when thou shalt end thy days, and finish thy life, distribute thine inheritance. Fodder, a wand, and burdens, are for the ass; and bread, correction, and work, for a servant.

(Sirach 33:1924 KJVA)

Best Audio Bible I have tried.

For clarity of voice, inflection, steady sound level and staying true to the Word it is by far my favorite. All others have been inferior in at least one of those qualities including those which have sound effects and multiple voices.

Good Unbridged Version

Great asset having the Word in an Audible forum during car travel times, Absolutely Awesome
