This is an excellent rendition of the 4th Gospel.

Those who listen to audio books know that a story can seem to come alive with the right narrator. Marquis Laughlin's performance of the Gospel of John will do that for you. His portrayal of characters by use of voice inflection and dramatization allow the listener to receive the story in a way not possible by merely reading the words. I would strongly recommend this be heard in one sitting but there is a (sort of) intermission about halfway marked by a short musical interlude which makes it easy to take a time out. This would be ideal for group settings. You will want to keep this available in your queue to listen to often.

I listened to this with a friend in one sitting late last evening. We both enjoyed the clarity and tempo of the voices. She feels the level of dramatic expressivity is good, I have no opinion on that point.

God and Job

The Old Testaments answer to the question of suffering shows neither God or his victim needing justification. I was expecting it to be read with the sonority of a Charlton Griffin, but LeVar Burton gave a more down-to-earth interpretation, as if Job and his accusers, lowly humans that they were, had to struggle to find the words to express their thoughts. I thought this approach worked well with the humans but not so well when the Lord himself was speaking from the whirlwind. I loved the recording and expect I will re-hear it often as I grow older.

Why is There Suffering?
