Excellent book for the non-biblical scholar

The author does an excellent job of breaking down complex theological positions and framing them back up for the laymenalways using sound logic and reason. Many of the topics he decides to take on are many of the same things I have wrestled with throughout my adult lifehow to reconcile them against scripture and my own inner beliefs, etc. I found his take on many of these to be consistent with what I have come to believe.

Good for history not interpretation

I found the first section of this book to be very informative as far as church history and how are canon came to be. However, I was very disheartened to hear Mr. Hamilton describe removing parts of scripture he didn't like or understand. I found that he painted scripture interpretation with a broad brush and based some of his arguments on assumptions and hypotheses. As I finished the book, I was reminded of the scripture verse found in Proverbs 3:5. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding."

Most important theological book I have read

And I have read many, including the insightful works of C.S. Lewis. This is a truly modern look at the Bible, the church, and Christianity. I, like many, have at times wondered if Christianity is really reflective of God, given some of its Old Testament violence, harsh penalties, and lack of compassion, which seem contradictory to the teachings of Jesus. I also struggled mightily with reconciling its apparent views toward women, slavery and homosexuality, and its esoteric writings like Revelation. Hamilton does a great service to struggling people of faith like me as he tackles and, to me, very effectively explains these difficulties in a satisfying, logical, compassionate manner. This book may just have saved my faith. Thank you Adam and thank you Lord! I pray it will help many others.

The narrator's attempt to provide a chirpy, "user-friendly", expressive narration comes off as if he's reading a story to a class of 5 year olds. Dreadful.

Healing

Would you listen to Divine Love again? Why?

I will listen to this audio program many times. This audio program has helped me heal in many ways. I'm used to reading Hawkins who presents the material in an intellectualized way. This is my first program by Dyer, other than his PBS special, and I'm forever touched by the love that radiates through.

Any additional comments?

I was weary of Dyer in the past, just because there seems to be so many pseudo-spiritual teachers out there, but after listening to this program I would recommend this program to anyone.

Absolutely. I identify and learn much from everything Dyer has put out there, but this was not my favorite for no particular reason. So far my favorite Dyer book was "I Can See Clearly Now" and I have enjoyed his movie "The Shift" multiple times!

Great Content, Monotone Narration

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Yes--if you can get past the narrator's bland and rapid style.

What aspect of Peter Biermas performance would you have changed?

The narrator, Peter Bierma, enunciates very precisely, and reads quite rapidly and in a monotone voice. So rapidly and so monotone, in fact, that I'm still not sure that a human being was narrating, and not a computer or robot. To me, it was very disappointing, because the content is very interesting and deep. Could be so much richer if the narrator put just a little feeling into it.

Great book, marginal narrator

The book is fantastic! A classic, you might say. However, the narrator in this version missed several pronunciations. it was actually quite annoying.

Incorrect pronunciation

The information contained herein is very important and valuable. It was long and sometimes difficult to keep focusing, especially because the reading of it was quite dry. It was unsettling to me that the narrator was not familiar with the correct pronunciation of the names in the Book of Mormon, and many in the Bible as well. There were also other, non-scriptural words he pronounced oddly. It was very distracting.

Amazing book, but so poorly narrated it will make you stop listening. I'm pretty sure the narrator is either anti Mormon or got into something that he clearly knows nothing about. This is so poorly read I can't believe it's still on audible.

Great book terrible reader

The book was good. I've read the physical book before but I couldn't get past the readers voice. It was like he was reading it in fast forward. Take a break and slow down. It drove me crazy. Also I didn't like his pronunciation of most of the names and places. It was all off. I'm sorry the content inside the book is great unfortunately the reader just ruined it for me.

66 Revelation - History's Last Chapter - 1966

This Book of Skip Heitzig for me is one of his best, I enjoyed it so much that I read it twice in succession. He has a way with words that leaves you wanting the book to never end.

Revelation comes alive without there being any confusion, a great book for any one wanting to know more about end time.

This is a series of 40+ consecutive sermons that are edited to flow smoothly. Intelligent and humorous throughout

Revelation is the least discussed and perhaps the most interesting book in the Bible. Skip does a great job explaining nearly every verse. He explains many of the original Greek words which help to define the context. He does not push to hard on some of the more ambiguous subjects like how the Anti-Christ will rise, what the locusts are, etc. and at times just says "I don't know." He makes a strong case for a pre-tribulation rapture of the church.

While most of us focus on Armageddon, Rapture, and the Anti-Christ, the most profound part of the Book is after all judgement when everything is made new. Skip did a phenomenal job explaining about our resurrected bodies and the ultimate glory of God. He explains Heaven, Hell, Hades, Abraham's Bosom, and why Paul refers to dead Christians as haven fallen asleep. I wasn't expecting Revelation to be about hope and glory. It turns out to be the most hope filled and glorious book of the Bible. Every Christian needs hear this!

very good but missing parts

I very much enjoy pastor skips teachings they're awesome and easy to understand and follow this was a great teaching however whoever put this together made duplicates of some chapters and teachings while altogether skipping other chapters and teachings would be great if somebody could go back and read it this audiobook to include the missing chapters

Finally Understanding Bart Ehrman

The guided reviews are simply unsuited to reviewing the great courses series.

Ehrman has written books on the subject, but hearing him go through the material in the style of a lecture really helped me to understand early gnostic and heretical/non proto-orthodox beliefs.

If you're interested in the early formation of Christianity before the establishment of the orthodox canon, this is the way to go. Great work, great explanations, just plain great. Well worth the listen, fully recommended.

Fascinating Review of Alternative Christian Books

Would you consider the audio edition of Lost Christianities: Christian Scriptures and the Battles over Authentication to be better than the print version?

I did not reads the print version.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Interesting question for a course review. Um, Eucibius? Seriously, Professor Ehrman did a wonderful job of giving biographies of the various historical figures who were involved in both the creating of these books (where thay are known) and in those who criticized them. It gives a lot of insight into why various writing did or did not make it into the Christian canon.

Have you listened to any of Professor Bart D. Ehrmans other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, he is an excellent scholar and an entertaining lecturer. I can't say that it is any better than any other, nor any worse. They are all excellent.

not a religious book at all!

although this book probably speaks better to the people who have grown up with religion their whole lives and are just trying to figure out how to have a relationship with God that feels more real to them, this book also speaks to the non churchgoer who is maybe only experienced church here and there throughout their lives. Great perspective and very enlightening listen.

A great book to remind us that there is nothing professional about ministry

I would say that I expect nothing less from John Piper, but that would be false. I never expect the depth and power of the words that I receive in the books written by John Piper. He always surprises me with his insightfulness into the word of God.

While as leaders in our churches we may become tempted to feel that we are professional in what we dom, this is a great reminder they the only professional is Jesus!

Excellent

Piper writes with an unwavering conviction. This work is greatly needed. We live in a day and age where the local church is viewed and built as a business and the pastor is viewed and acts as a CEO and that could not be further from the truth. I recommend this book to all pastors/elders and deacons.
