Title: A Year of Biblical Womanhood
Subtitle: How a Liberated Woman Found Herself Sitting on Her Roof, Covering Her Head, and Calling Her Husband 'Master'
    Author: Rachel Held Evans
    Narrator: Shannon McManus
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 18 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-15-12
    Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 205 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
Strong-willed and independent, Rachel Held Evans couldnt sew a button on a blouse before she embarked on a radical life experiment - a year of biblical womanhood. Intrigued by the traditionalist resurgence that led many of her friends to abandon their careers to assume traditional gender roles in the home, Evans decides to try it for herself, vowing to take all of the Bibles instructions for women as literally as possible for a year.
Evans learns the hard way that her quest for biblical womanhood requires more than a gentle and quiet spirit (1 Peter 3:4). It means growing out her hair, making her own clothes, covering her head, obeying her husband, rising before dawn, abstaining from gossip, remaining silent in church, and even camping out in the front yard during her period.
With just the right mixture of humor and insight, compassion and incredulity, A Year of Biblical Womanhood is an exercise in scriptural exploration and spiritual contemplation. What does God truly expect of women, and is there really a prescription for biblical womanhood? Come along with Evans as she looks for answers in the rich heritage of biblical heroines, models of grace, and all-around women of valor.

    Humorous yet thought-provoking book
What did you love best about A Year of Biblical Womanhood?
The author's humor, mixed with her own deep desire to understand what it means to be a biblical woman helped me think about this complex and often controversial issue.
What did you like best about this story?
The author made intentional decisions to explore various examples of women from the Bible, including sleeping in a tent in her yard during her period (seriously, read the book to see why) and visiting with Amish women.
    Which scene was your favorite?
One of my favorite scenes is when she describes cooking a dinner, doing it entirely from scratch, trying to follow a perceived biblical ideal. She tries to do it entirely without her husband's assistance, but then is frustrating that he's not helping. It's a comical and realistic portrayal of the conversations that happen in many homes, mine included, whether or not we're trying to follow an ideal of biblical womanhood.
    Any additional comments?
At the end, the author discusses the various positions that are held within Christian circles regarding the role of women, and identifies her own conclusions based on her experiences and study that was part of the book project. Overall, I would highly recommend the book for those who want to think about this issue in a light-hearted but challenging way.
    LOVE Rachel!
What did you love best about A Year of Biblical Womanhood?
I love this book! I love the humor Rachel uses to describe her year. I love her voice that comes across! This book is a MUST for everyone- especially those who grew up in a staunch religious environment!
What about Shannon McManuss performance did you like?
I have listened to Rachel's "Evolving in Monkeytown" read by herself and it was terrific and humorous! It didn't take long listening to Shannon's performance for me to forget that it wasn't Rachel herself reading.

    Satan doesnt stand a chance
Would you listen to Exposing Satan's Playbook again? Why?
Insightful! It helped me a lot- this really IS exposing the tactics that can damage our faith and cause separation from God if we are not vigilant in protecting our mind and will. EVERY CHILD OF GOD MUST READ especially those just starting their walk like I am. POWERFUL stuff. Satan will meet his match when we are empowered with the Holy Spirit and this knowledge here.
What other book might you compare Exposing Satan's Playbook to and why?
I have read nothing like it.

  • Who Is This Man? Audiobook by John Ortberg

    Title: Who Is This Man?
Subtitle: The Unpredictable Impact of the Inescapable Jesus
    Author: John Ortberg
    Narrator: Arthur Morey
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 40 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-26-12
    Publisher: Zondervan
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 134 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
Jesus' impact on our world is highly unlikely, widely inescapable, largely unknown, and decidedly double-edged. It is unlikely in light of the severe limitations of his earthly life; it is inescapable because of the range of his impact; it is unknown because history doesn't connect dots; and it is doubled-edged because his followers have wreaked so much havoc, often in his name.
He is history's most familiar figure, yet he is the man no one knows. His impact on the world is immense and non-accidental. From the Dark Ages to Post-Modernity, he is the Man who won't go away.
And yet... you can miss him in historical lists for many reasons, maybe the most obvious being the way he lived his life. He did not loudly and demonstrably defend his movement in the spirit of a rising political or military leader. He did not lay out a case that history would judge his brand of belief superior in all future books.
His life and teaching simply drew people to follow him. He made history by starting in a humble place, in a spirit of love and acceptance, and allowing each person space to respond.
His vision of life continues to haunt and challenge humanity. His influence has swept over history, bringing inspiration to what has happened in art, science, government, medicine, and education; he has taught humans about dignity, compassion, forgiveness, and hope.

NOT narrated by John Ortberg, sadly
Would you try another book from John Ortberg and/or Arthur Morey?
I had the opportunity to hear the author, John Ortberg, teach from this book at the Willow Creek Association Global Leadership summit in August 2012. John was so excited about the lesson that he got the entire audience excited about learning more about the impact Jesus had on our society.
The day after John spoke at the conference, I purchased this audio book and began listening to it with excitement. Well...not only was the person reading not John Ortberg, the narrator was not at all excited about the subject. What's ironic is that John Ortberg said he wrote this book so that people would get excited about who Jesus is and the narrator is NOT excited. LOL
I really wish I had read the description before I purchased this audio book. I recommend downloading video or audio of the author teaching from this book or just reading it instead.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Who Is This Man??
Jesus' impact on social justice in society
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator did not seem excited about the subject matter. One of the reasons I purchased this audio book was the author's enthusiasm for the subject. The standard for non-fiction audio books seems to be a very bland, monotone delivery and in this case it detracted from the book.
Could you see Who Is This Man? being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
    No. A documentary might work.
    Any additional comments?
Re-narrate this book with John Ortberg.
    Being read vs. being performed
If you could sum up Who Is This Man? in three words, what would they be?
    Lifechanging exploration of Jesus
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Unfortunate choice of narrator. It is hard to concentrate when feeling like you are being read to without proper emphasis on the content. It is just being "read."
    Any additional comments?
I would almost ask for a refund or credit.

Nothing except the Resurrection of Jesus Christ is a greater miracle or wonder in human history. God becoming flesh in human history is the greatest marvel. Jesus of Nazareth was foretold in the Torah and the Prophets centuries before his appearance, and he was proved to be real and not a pretender due to his death and Resurrection. The early church grappled with all of this intellectually. Many heresies were confronted, answered, and dismissed. Throughout the 2,000-plus years of church history, many of the early church heresies have reappeared over and over again. Whether you are Catholic or Protestant, the answers are from the Word of God.

  • Business for the Glory of God Audiobook by Wayne Grudem

Title: Business for the Glory of God
Subtitle: The Bible's Teaching on the Moral Goodness of Business
    Author: Wayne Grudem
    Narrator: Maurice England
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 2 hrs and 4 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-06-12
    Publisher: christianaudio.com
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 85 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
Can business activity in itself be morally good and pleasing to God? Sometimes business can seem so shady-manipulating the "bottom line", deceiving the consumer, or gaining promotions because of whom you know. But Wayne Grudem introduces a novel concept: business itself glorifies God when it is conducted in a way that imitates God's character and creation. He shows that all aspects of business, including ownership, profit, money, competition, and borrowing and lending, glorify God because they are reflective of God's nature.
Though Grudem isn't naive about the easy ways these activities can be perverted and used as a means to sin, he knows that Christians can be about the business of business. This biblically based book is a thoughtful guide to imitating God during interactions with customers, coworkers, employees, and other businesses. See how your business, and your life in business, can be dedicated to God's glory.

    Well-organized, clearly communicated, Important
    Any additional comments?
I love this book! What does the Bible say about how we spend a majority of our time and effort? He clearly identifies the business world as one of the places where the rubber meets the road -- where our faith and values interact with the wide world. Very valuable to hear a well-respected theologian expand such an important topic.
Business can be a ministry for good in the lives of our neighbors
We as Christian business owners can embrace the good we can do for the world in Gods name. This book was a wonderful way to break down that process. Some of the book to many will sound basic. But to hear and read the scripture passages that support the basic ideas of business is a wonderful extension of ones study of scripture. It shows me and me and fellow business owners the good we do and can do for Gods world and children. I recomend this book for any fellowship of business owners that strive to understand how they can use their business to further Gods kingdom and beat down the devil. I recomend those interested to seek out Business Men's Fellowship. There are chapters world wide. Doing business Gods way is the best way.
    Great listen
this is a refreshing and uncommon perspective on Business. Well performed and written, I will help you find new vigor and purpose for Business.
sufficient handling of basic business philosophy
    pro:
    - it was short and to the point
    - it left out a lot of fluff and dealt with basic concepts like profit, trade, productivity
    - it seems to have the strength of experience and not just ivory tower conjecture
    - it helped to bring about some "aha" moments even though I do not share all of the same opinions or interpretations as the author.
    con:
    - the author seems to make snap judgements about government decisions that are bad for the way he thinks business must fuction. He even calls them "evil". However I am glad that he does not go on a political rant to back up his opinion. So this was not a deal-breaker if you can overlook it.
    - while there is much good discussion and argumentation, some of the points and concepts are not worked out in a logical explanatory discussion or provided with much argument to chew on. I suspect the times where this happens are closely related to my first con remark.

What did you like best about this story?
Stormie Omartian stays on point. She doesn't wander from the topic. The entire book is about using the Bible to empower your prayers. The narration was excellent, the book is short enough to listen to over and over, and the examples are simple, worshipful, and useful.
What about Tavia Gilberts performance did you like?
I have listened to Ms. Gilbert before, and she always does a beautiful job of reading with reverence and wonder in a relaxing tone.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes. I want to listen to it over and over until I absorb this form of prayer into my life. It has already changed the way I view God's Word for the better.
    Any additional comments?
The is the best book on prayer since Brother Lawrence's Practice of the Presence of God. It is short enough for a busy person to listen to and powerful enough to stop a busy person's train of thought and turn it to God. I know that it did that for me.
    great book
I will listen to this book again it is a great tool to help me memorize scripture
So happy I was led to get this book!
I listened while at work, it's calming and reassuring. I hope to remember to refer to many of the verses and prayers in my time of need and encouragement.
    Reading it again
It is worth reading over and over again. Thanks Stormie, love the helpfulness of your books.
Great way to strengthen your prayer life!
This is not a story but rather a series of short prayers based around scripture. I feel I retain so much more and internalize when I am actively listening. I listened to the whole book while cleaning and plan to revisit this book often in the future.

    Publisher's Summary:
In this unabridged audio download of Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus, Lois Tverberg challenges readers to follow their Rabbi more closely by re-examining his words in the light of their Jewish context. Doing so will provide a richer, deeper understanding of his ministry, compelling us to live differently, to become more Christ-like. Well begin to understand why his first Jewish disciples abandoned everything to follow him, to live out his commands. Our modern society, with its individualism and materialism, is very different than the tight-knit, family-oriented setting Jesus lived and taught in. What wisdom can we glean from his Eastern, biblical attitude toward life? How can knowing Jesus within this context shed light on his teachings for us today? In Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus well journey back in time to eavesdrop on the conversations that arose among the rabbis of Jesus day, and consider how hearing Rabbi Jesus with the ears of a first-century disciple can bring new meaning to our faith. And well listen to Jewish thinkers through the ages, discovering how ideas that germinated in Jesus time have borne fruit over time. Doing so will yield fresh, practical insights for following our Rabbis teachings from a Jewish point of view.

Insight on 1st Century Rabbinical Practice
What did you love best about Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus?
Thought-provoking. Great background to understand the cultural context of the Gospels better. It was easy to follow. About half of the material was truly new to me, but every nugget that was new was priceless!
Excellent for the Jesus thirsty follower
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
With the belief that the bridegroom is coming, I am making every effort possible to know about about the groom. Ann gives us great insight on understanding the Jewish culture and how it pertains to our closed minded western view of the world. The ignorant are not ignorant because they don't desire knowledge. They are ignorant because they don't know that they don't know. Well, I have been ignorant to MANY things.
This book opened my eyes to a broader spectrum of knowledge. I will never read the bible the same again. Keep in mind, she does put her opinion in from time to time, but based on the Hebrew language and understanding of alone, helps me to better receive what I am writing. Wonderful Read!
What other book might you compare Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus to and why?
Sitting at the feet of Rabbi Jesus
Great New Insight On Familiar Teachings
If you could sum up Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus in three words, what would they be?
Just finished chapter 9 of this book today, a chapter on praying with "chutzpah." Lois Tverberg provides some great new insights for familiar teachings of Jesus. After providing some helpful historical, linguistic and literary context information, she offers VERY relevant practical applications of these familiar passages in ways you may not have considered before. Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus has added value to my understanding of Jesus' teachings. And, the book has challenged me towards spiritual growth in important areas.

Ben Holland is the perfect narrator for this book!
Would you listen to He Chose the Nails again? Why?

    Publisher's Summary:
Few pastors or Christian writers have dared to approach the subject of how proper eating and an active lifestyle can affect how we serve God. Author Gary Thomas does just that. And he reaches all the way back to the apostle Paul, who wrote that we need to prime our bodies to become, "an instrument for noble purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work."
To illustrate the body/soul correlation, Thomas presents engaging and diverse stories that include a young mom who got fit through volleyball and reaped spiritual rewards in her marriage, a 300-pound pastor who realized his obesity was eroding his ministry impact, and a woman who gained the spiritual strength to survive a contentious divorce by training for a marathon. In every instance, Thomas makes a direct connection between the physical challenge and its spiritual consequence. This book is a must read for anyone seeking new and compelling motivation for strengthening their bodies and fortifying their souls.

Submitting to the Lordship of Jesus is always a pleasure. I'm so glad He inspired Gary Thomas to write and narrate this book!
    Life changing book!
As a man in my early to mid thirties, former college athlete, father of two, husband and friends to many, I struggle with balancing life, fitness and ministry. At times I would go at working out like crazy, but never for the right reasons. My reasons were more Vain or for relieving stress, never for the reasons Gary described in the book as using my body as a temple for God's work. This book changed my thoughts on working out, eating right and just living a happy, healthy lifestyle. Gary helped me to understand I need a healthy body to do God's work and the longer I am healthy the longer I get to do God's work. Since listening to this book my attitude has changed, I look forward to working out and pushing myself harder, because in those hard moments I find myself talking to God more. This book help define "life in balance" for me. I surprisingly was recommended this book by my doctor after some bad blood work and now I have recommend this book to everyone I know. I hope you give this book a try too.
