Very Thankful for this Work!

Would you listen to The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali again? Why?

Yes, I plan to listen to it several times. Many yogis use dates and facts that are not supported by the facts. Doesn't mean they are wrong, they just can't be supported. i.e. "Yoga as described in the Sutras goes back 5,000 years." Maybe, but probably not. I'm interested in what is really "known" about the sutras. Let's start with the truth, then build from there. If a yogi is afraid of the truth, I'm not sure that's a good foundation for their practice.

It's hard to find a fair, purely academic treatment of Yoga. I'm sorry to see the yoga practitioners who rate this work poorly. One person gave this 1 star because they meant to purchase a traditional commentary, so instead of taking responsibility for their mistake, they took it out on the work. Not a shining example of yogic Ahimsa. The next reviewer found it a hubristic, cynical, sarcastic, and racist diatribe that is "veiled" as academic. So much so that they didn't complete it. Hmmm. No examples provide to support their position, no attempt to illustrate how the work is academically incorrect. If there was ever a need to practice Satya (2nd limb, 2nd observance: truth in thought, word, and deed), this is it. If you feel the work is bad, then state it as a feeling, not as a fact. If you're going to state is a fact, then back it up with examples, so the reader can decide for themselves. While I'm neither a practioner nor an academic, I do find it sad how yogic practitioners can behave so badly when confronted with an academic treatment of the texts they hold dear.

If you want to listen to a short (by comparison) lecture that covers the foundation of the Map of Consciousness, this is it. I own dozens of Doc's lectures yet I turn back to this one a couple of times a month. EXCELLENT!

Informative, practical and entertaining

What did you like best about this story?

An easy to follow explanation of his method, its validity, its context and human consciousness, delivered with humour and humility, Hawkins offers sanity and practical wisdom about consciousness and why it is important to raise yours. He also points out ways to do so.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

I think he did a very credible job. There were a few seemingly "religious" comments but when he explained his own personal context later, I found they were okay. He spoke about his stint both as a religious person, an atheist, and a spiritual person.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I had several "Aha!" moments and could visualize easily what he was describing. It left me feeling more informed and edified.

For anyone with an interest in what human consciousness is and why it is important - Hawkins presents a great primer and follow up in this tome.

An excellent introduction to various religions

This course is one of the best Great Courses lecture series I have come across. Prof. Grant Hardy has compiled and presents in this course a huge amount of information about various world religions through introducing their sacred scriptures. He presents it in such an enthusiastic and engaging manner that it is difficult to stop listening.

During these lectures he deals with all the major religions in the world and a few of the lesser known religions. He conveys a lot of empathy towards the different religious traditions without sacrificing his own faith tradition. (He actually kept me guessing about his background, until I listened to his lecture on the Book of Mormon and the Church of the Latter Day Saints' liturgy used in their temples as a spoken form of sacred text. An internet search confirmed my suspicion. That said, his engaging, objective and open-minded approach to different religions ensured that no clear bias towards any specific faith tradition could be detected.)

He dealt with Hinduism (4 lectures), Sikhism (1 lecture), Judaism (5 lectures), Zoroastrianism (1 lecture), Buddhism (6 lectures), Jainism (1 lecture), Confucianism (2 lectures), Daoism (2 lectures), Shinto and Tenrikyo (1 lectures), Christianity (4 lectures), Mormonism (1 lecture), Islam (3 lectures), Baha'i (1 lecture), Abandoned Scriptures (1 lecture) and Secular Scriptures (1 lecture) with an introductory and closing lecture added.

It is very interesting and insightful. For me his lectures the Hebrew Bible, Zoroastrianism and Buddhism were the most interesting. The idea that the Hebrew Bible is a text in conversation with itself is a brilliant observation. I found his discussion of the influence Zoroastrianism on Judaism and Christianity thought provoking. He helped me also to get a much better grasp on Buddhism.

Thoughtful, comprehensive perspective

A wonderful comprehensive perspective on how what appears obvious is ignored if not consistent with societal "norms". Compelling examples of connections between us, appealing to one's scientific and spiritual point of view. Persuasive vignettes and theories, making even dogmatic individuals with at least a sprinkling of curiosity think twice about what this all means.

Very thought provoking!

Dr. Dossey makes very compelling argument about the inter-connectedness of all things. Many documented examples of "unexplained" communication between beings, both human and non. I listened to this book on audible, and I must say I prefer to listen to novels versus fact recitation, but I was able to do other things while listening. Listening to the reading of facts and anecdotes can be dry, but the subject matter was fascinating.

One Mind should be the start of a new awakening!

I have been a huge fan of Larry Dossey for several years now. This book is definitely my favorite one so far. With elegant simplicity and spiritual depth, One Mind illuminates a divine truth. Everything is divinely connected to everything else. This book left me feeling optimistic and excited about the future because I believe the One Mind that he wrote about is The Source of all things and I am intimately connected to that Source. I love this book and its message!

Good topic & advice, oddly mechanical delivery

Would you consider the audio edition of Gratitude Works! to be better than the print version?

I think I would enjoy the print version better. The reader's style detracted from the important and interesting content for me.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

This topic is very interesting, and the author reviews research and his own experiences on gratitude techniques that is likely to help a good many people live a happier, more engaged life. Unfortunately: The reader speaks clearly and fluently, but makes the book sound like a monotonous litany. While this is a non-fiction work and the author presents research data, it is written in the first person, by an author who writes informally and in a personal, engaging style. Very often, the reader is simply reading the book in the same lilting tone, without any emotional inflection at appropriate places, including punctuation marks, as if the reader never read it before the recording and is reading the prose cold. This reader seems well-practiced at cold-reading informational texts with excellent diction and pseudo-emotional inflection. It's very much like listening to a reading by a sophisticated computer. In fact, I had to verify that it was a human being credited as the reader. I'm certain I would get more out of this book if I could listen to the author reading his own work or presenting a lecture.

Very informative book. Unfortunately, as is typical of most books written by "academics", it is too long and to drawn out for what it delivers! Most of us could benefit tremendously by reading and doing the exercises in the last chapter. Thanks.

The Complete Heretic's Guide to Western Religion. Because religion isn't just wrong. It's hilarious.

Hilarious and disturbing history.

The author has an ax to grind, and he sharpens his ax beautifully. It's funny and well documented, full of illuminating history from the goofy and occasionally violent days of the Mormons.

A less than stellar reading, though. Although the narrator is a likable radio host, he offers many cringe-worthy mispronunciations that detract from the flow. ("Ec cetera" is particularly jarring, as it occurs in the text frequently. If that sort of thing doesn't bother you, then buy the book.) I had to decode "cholera" when it was pronounced ko-LER-uh. I lost half a paragraph figuring that out.

Amusing treatment, but narration problems

The subject matter of the book is good; I didn't learn anything new, but the presentation was very amusingly written. For those not familiar with Mormonism from the outside, it's a good overview, if perhaps a little cheeky.

However, the narrator's constant and consistent mispronunciations often threw me out of the narrative. If you are going to do a book about Mormonism, at least learn to pronounce some of the place names, personal names, and words correctly.
