Worth reading/listening to...

The narration was excellent, easy to understand, easy on the ears. The production was also excellent. I did not have to adjust volume and or tenor throughout.

I enjoyed the story, its historic nature but most especially the description of spiritual and emotional struggle.

A Welsh-fluent reader makes the difference

I have read and reread this book as an ebook. I enjoy the story thoroughly!

What I was not expecting from the audio book is that the performer's correct pronunciation of Welsh names and use of a Welsh accent for Welsh characters made the book come alive in a new way for me.

I highly recommend this book to other lovers of both fantasy and historical fiction!

Fun listen!

Loved the history and the accents the narrator used. Off to the next book in the series!

Pleasantly Surprised. Better Than I Expected !

I really liked this story way more than I thought I would. Its labeled a prequel, but if you havent read/listened to any of the After Cilmeri series, youre in luck, as its even better to start here.

The story of Meg and Prince Llywelyn is well crafted, often deep, often humorous and a good romp. Dont let all the history throw you, just go with it. Knowing the exact historical events is not necessary to follow the plot and enjoy the book. Each character becomes more and more interesting as the story goes on. And yes, the first person narrative switches between Meg and Prince Llywelyn, but you get used to that quite quickly and it just plain works. I found the narration a bit fast paced in the beginning, but gets easier to understand after a couple of chapters in.

Ill give you another little hint: When you get to the end of this book and long for the story to continue, no worries, as the next book, Footsteps in Time is even better! The narration on that audiobook is smoother paced. Go ahead and treat yourself, this series is a pleasant surprise.

I enjoyed this book very much, it was the first I had read by this author, now I look forward to reading some of her other books.

Wonderful Story of Forgivenes and Love

This is my first book by this author and Im sure it wont be my last. I have to admit that I started and restarted this book 2 times within the first chapter before I continued further. I think it was the narration, as it took me a while to get into her rhythm of speaking. But, Im glad I didnt give up.

Steeped in history, this is a truly gripping story that is filled with heartfelt characters. It is a believable story that deals with family conflicts, revenge, and forgiveness. It moves along at a good pace and definitely holds interest throughout. Both the main characters, Annyn and Garr, have well developed personalities that draw you in to their world. Their romance is engaging, challenging, and so very sweet.

This story has Christian elements which gives dimension to the personalities of the main characters. These moral standards increased understanding of the character's motivations which added to the believeability within that time period in history.

If you enjoy history, heartfelt strong characters, engaging story, and romance (no detailed sex) then this one is worth a credit. I will definitely be ordering the next in this series.

Refreshing! Romance without Porn.

It's rare to find a Romance Novel not filled with pornographic detail! Refreshing! And to have great interesting historical characters to boot. This is first book I read by this author and am going to order another as soon as I finish this review.

What did you like best about this story?

I like books that are clean, no foul language or sexual content, and believe it or not, this one proves that great books can be written without all of that. I love the twists and turns throughout the book as well as at the end. Kept me guessing the entire time and never saw the outcome. I really enjoyed this book.

What about Mary Sarah Agliottas performance did you like?

I really like her accent and the fact that she made each character different, as opposed to just reading the book. It did take me some time to get used to her accent, but once I did, I just couldn't wait to get back to it. I have listened to it more than once and will probably listen to it again. Just got the second book in the series and can't wait to get wrapped up in that one.

Fun on the Run

Naxos releases another Heyer classic. This one is a short, fast, fun read. Our hero and heroine, both being pressured by family to enter marriages they find abhorrent, "meet cute": Penelope has shorn her hair, donned men's clothes, and is climbing out the window at 3 a.m. when she is rescued by a "bosky" Sir Richard, who is walking home after drowning his sorrows at White's Club.

Stirred by the idea of disappearing--and thus not having to propose to "the iceberg" his mother is pushing on him--Sir Richard (in his elegantly inebrieted state) agrees to pose as the gender-disguised "Penn's" tutor so that he can escort her to her childhood sweetheart's family estate.

By the time our hero sobers up, he and "Penn" are travelling on a public stagecoach, where they meet with an interesting assortment of the common folk (no fancy dress balls or evenings at Almack's in this story), and an especially interesting assortment of highway robbers. Mystery and danger ensue, but we know what will happen in the end--which is part of the joy of these books, at least for some of us.

Georgina Sutton's narration is top-notch; all the Naxos narrators are competent, but she's exceptionally good.

the addiction to this author continues

This is a fun listen that kept me very entertained. I loved the antics of Penn, she acted on impulse which of course is usually not a good idea. Ricky's reactions were usually tolerant and helpful. The storyline in this book may have been used before by many authors. What makes Heyer's books is the dialog. She has a real talent for writing great conversation and infusing it with nuances that help develop the characters. One of the funniest characters in this book was Mr. Brandon. I could just picture him all dressed up like a dandy in the country village. Just way to many fun things to mention in a review without spoiling it for others. Narration was top notch. Highly recommend if you like this genre. And definitely worth a credit.

I would compare it to a Jane Austen book. Not quite as well written, but still worth listening to.

Another good one

This third book in The Dressmakers series is a good story. I enjoy the sisters and the supporting cast in these books. Leonie and Lisburne are fun together but I didn't feel the spark between them as I did with her sisters in the previous books. But the supporting players are great. I've always liked Clara and now add Grace and Swanton. Great fun. I understand there's a longer wait than usual for the next book but I'll be ready. This author and Kate Reading, the reader of the audiobook, are two of my favorites.

The last sister meets her match

This book was the my least favorite of this series but still an enjoyable listen. Kate Reading provides excellent narration.

Our couple is well matched. The storyline seemed a bit more of a formula for this book after listening to the first two books.

Glad that the next book will focus on Clara who we met in the first book. I am looking forward to it and have it preordered.

A different pattern for a historical romance.

From the other countless novels I've read about this period in British history, "The Trades" were forbidden, demeaning. Any heir that had married a person whose wealth was achieved by active participation in business was undoubtly forced to do so to save the family holdings. Of course this was a double stigma because it meant the heir hadn't been of a caliber to attract a monied mate from the ton. So Vixen in Velvet is a change from the usual romantic trysts. This being the third book in this series where the precedent has been set by two older sisters who are swept off their feet by attractive, popular members of the peerage who fall so deeply in love with their extraordinary beautiful ladies in trade that not a word is said about it except that the new husbands don't want their wives to continue working. So it is natural that Vixen tidies up all the loose ends with panache. Different and delightful.

This series is wonderful.

Love this series. The characters are interesting and humorous. The reference to art and the classics are as ingenious as the descriptions of the dresses from Maison Noirot. This reader is the best I have ever experienced and I will listen to everything she reads. The depiction of the Quality vs the rest of the world are so good that I feel like I am there.

Adventure, Mystery and Romance. Its got it all.

This book is one great adventure from beginning to end. This is the story of Cam, who is sworn widower and Joan a young woman who's mother just recently died. They set out on a fast paced adventure that progresses from friendship to romance to love.

It is a well written book that is filled with charming characters, cute fun, adventure, mystery, and romance,. The narrator was wonderful and his accent was so........divine.

This one is worth a try especially if you enjoy highlanders.

The voice

I am visually impaired so audio books are my way to escape everything. The story was good but mostly it was Keiran Elliott's voice it settles me gives me a peace, I did not suffer my headaches of trying to survive a visual world but gave me sight into a world thank you. [email protected]

Going back for the other in series

Enjoyed the story listened almost completely straight through. My husband was most exasperated having to repeat himself because I was so engrossed.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Not just a romance, which was was well written by itself, but a successful mystery as we'll. The performance of the narrator, Kieran Elliot, made this piece believable, authentic, and truly a joy to listen to.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Joan and Cam both are my favorite characters. Joan for her strength, even though she doubted herself more than once, was courageous in solving the intrigue involving her and her new friends and family and risking herself to love completely without reservation. And Cam for his steadfast love and devotion to Joan in spite of her lack of ladylike qualities.

Have you listened to any of Keiran Elliotts other performances before? How does this one compare?

My first listen of Keiran Elliott. I will definitely look for more of his performances.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Epilogue, when Cam discovered Joan in labor, Joan could not banish Cam from the birthing room no mater how hard she tried to spare him from possible death of her and the child. Love, joy, possible death, survival-what a rush of emotion the author and narrator thrilled us with to the end!

FANTASTIC!

You can never go wrong with a Lynsay Sands novel! This one is especially well done.

Being a born Aussie I approached this book with equal parts curiosity and apprehension. Curiosity because this topic of Australian war brides was unfamiliar to me except in the vaguest sense and apprehension because non- Australian writers rarely write Australian characters well without falling into the trap of stereotyping.

The story was interesting and unique. The plot meandered its way through the voyage rather than dragged as it gradually introduced and unpacked each character and his or her story. The main characters were well written but did appear to me to be cardboard cut outs of stereotypical 1940's Australian women. Also, Jeans character in particular seemed to spew out clichéd Australian colloquisms so often that I suspect the author gleaned most of that characters dialogue from "an idiots guide to Aussie slang" or something similar.

The narration was really exceptional. The accents were very very well done and inflection and intonation were perfect.

All in all it was a good book. I think it lost points for me because of the stereotypes but I suspect that aspect won't bother other listeners nearly as much as it did me.

Unforgetable journey

Would you consider the audio edition of The Ship of Brides to be better than the print version?

Definitely! Nicolette McKenzie is a wonderful narrator, with accents and feeling for both men and women. I checked this book out of my library a year ago, and it has stayed with me ever since. As soon as I saw it on Audible, I jumped on it.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Ship of Brides?

The ending - no spoilers! I also enjoyed the descriptions of Margaret's boistrous family life.

What does Nicolette McKenzie bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Oh, that voice! She can read anything!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The ending was immensely emotionally moving, both the happy and the sad bits.

As stated above, this book was wonderful! I read this a year ago and never forgot it. Jojo Moyes is a very talented author, and using a ship as a plot device was wonderful. With the advances in air travel, it's hard to imagine a weeks-long journey across the sea, in essence trapped on a boat with hundreds of other people, when these days you hear stories about being stuck on trans-Atlantic flights sitting behind a screaming baby. The period details about the war, the journey, the culture...

I loved it the 1st time & again the 2nd!

Such a very enjoyable story, complete with humor (lots), passion (lots), deceit (sort of) and mostly self discovery. Historical romance, the ton, the many sides of London and the balls.... etc , etc... Very well done! I loved everyone in this story (almost) and will miss them (until book 2) as I really feel like I got to know them.

I've read this book years ago and loved it. The audio version does it justice. The narrator does the characters and story justice.

A must read/listen.

This book I loved!!!

Someone stated that this book was to advanced in its time. I didn't see that I saw a woman who wanted the same rights as men. To have freedom. I believe that occurred in all times. That is how equal rights for women began. Who are we to judge if this couldn't occur at this time. This was a great book of characters and was full of live. I can't wait to read the next in this series.

I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!

This book had me from the first chapter! I loved the banter between the characters and the h/h. The love scenes were of the "perfect temperature" (hot) and the narrator was very good. I do have a question for any avid historical romance readers out there however... WHAT IS IT WITH THE SENTENCE REPEATED IN EVERY STORY...SOMETIMES SEVERAL TIMES..THAT SAYS "SHE/HE RELEASED THE BREATH SHE/HE HADN'T KNOWN SHE/HE WAS HOLDING". Is this some type of code for something between authors or am I doomed to roll my eyes each and every time I hear it?? lol ME OTHER FAVORITE IS..." SHE DIDN'T KNOW WHERE SHE ENDED AND HE BEGAN " ENOUGH ALREADY WITH THESE TWO SENTENCES... okay, my rant is over for today. That being said, I did enjoy this book and am onto the next. OH, and one more thing...when books contain the same characters from book to book ...PLEASE NUMBER THEM FOR READING ORDER!!! (big sigh) I feel much better now. ;)

I loved everything about this book and I don't even know how many time I laughed out loud. Loved Nick and Isabel, as well as the secondary characters, Lara, Rock, Jane, Kate, Gwen, James and Georgiana. It was a great love story filled with laughs, sexual tension and sex. Gotta love it..

As to the narrator: WOW!! I had never listened to Jane Wells before but I have to say she did a phenomenal job reading this book. Her emotions were just where they were supposed to be, laughing, crying, yelling, whispering but her sarcasm was the very best I've ever heard. I would definitely listen to her again. Awesome job, Ms. Wells..

Very well read EXCEPT for the multitude of mispronounciationsvv

This was my second listening and my first impression has been confirmed. It drives me crazy that so many producers of audiobooks allow repeated mispronunciations of common words. Ton should never be pronounced "tone" in an historical romance. Mary Jane Wells did a stellar job of dramatizing this book.

The is one of my favorites of the books I have read by Sarah MacLean. I recommend the Nine..., Ten....,Eleven... Series.

Thank you Naxos for another unabridged Georgette Heyer audio book. I was thrilled when I found this and "Venetia." Glad tidings for her legions of fans. Thank you Audible for making these available for your listeners.

This is a highly entertaining story with all the usual hallmarks that make Heyer's books so exceptionally wonderful. There is no one to match her clever plotting, vivid characters, witty dialogue, and humorous scenes

The narrator was perfect for the book. Her voice is clear and pure and captured Peter's (Prudence's) lovely personality, courage and loyal heart while handling the male characters with equal skill.

An exciting story set before the Regency, I highly recommend this delightful book.

Difficult to follow as an audio book

If you were expecting to find the clever repartee of Heyer's usual dialogue you will be disappointed. This is more of a farce than a whimsical romantic comedy. I am delighted by most of Heyer's stories but this is a forgettable and confusing tale.

Lots of Flaws In This One

Definitely not Heyer's best. Weird plot, with a brother and sister on the lam from British authorities because their father imprudently involved them in the Jacobite uprising of 1745. Sister Prudence is disguised as Peter while brother Robin dons petticoats as Kate.

Unlike "The Corinthian" and "These Old Shades," two other Heyer romances featuring young heroines who disguise themselves as boys, this one just made my eyes roll. I liked Prudence's swordplay and her romance with Sir Anthony, though both were over-the-top unbelievable. Robin's romance with the nitwit Letitia was totally absurd.

Add to that, I disliked "the Old Gentleman," the father whose actions and preemptory orders precipitate and drive the farce. His supposed charm was totally lost on me. The only real point of interest I found was Heyer's almost certainly unwitting but nevertheless accurate portrayal of a man suffering from what today would probably be diagnosed as mania, the "up" aspect of bipolar disorder. I suspect she may have modeled the Old Gentleman on someone she knew personally.

Swashbuckle City!

Most of Georgette Heyer's best known romances are set in the fairly sedate English Regency period at the beginning of the 19th century, but "The Masqueraders" takes place a couple of generations before that. The Hanoverian King George I has recently defeated the Stuart line of Bonny Prince Charles, so the politics are more unsettled and dangerous at this point in time. The French Revolution is 50 years in the future, so English aristocrats still emulate their continental counterparts in lavish dress, speech, and exaggerated manners.
