Began very abruptly, ended the same way
Once I figured out what was going on, I enjoyed reading this story (although the backwoods elements felt laid on a bit thick, with every man drinking moonshine and smoking corncob pipes). However, once the central drama became clear, the ending felt rushed and a bit contrived. I would read more work by the author. I found the relationship between the two main characters (the soldier and the alien-human) to be intriguing.
Great short story
I have no real complaints about this story - it's very unique, has moments of insight, and addresses a few important issues we all face at some point in our lives. What more could you ask of a short story?
I only wish it wasn't quite SO short... with these characters and this idea, this could be developed into quite a good novel or even series. I wonder if the author has considered expansion.
Great intro but not a story.
Good for a taster and shows great promise. Sets the scene for a real story. Love the military analytical thinking.
Excellent short story
Fantastic story, explored some great new concepts, quite impressed. There were a few minor typos that I wish I could have fixed though. Strange to see small mistakes like that in such a thoughtful and well-written story.
Fun read but confusing beginning.
I bought this simply because many podcast authors I follow recommended John's work. I enjoyed the story but the beginning was a bit confusing because it was simply SO alien, I didn't know if it was dealing with aliens, or zombies or what. Once I got further in however I enjoyed it immensely.
