Will the Studleys become the Ransomes?
Sam Studley is fourteen, soon to be fifteen. Leanne, his sister, is fifteen, soon to be sixteen. The Studley household is full of tension as Mrs. Studley prepares to marry Steve Ransome, a local policeman. Sam isn't at all certain he wants Steve to live with them. He doesn't mind that his mum has a romantic interest, but having the guy live with them is another matter. Fuming after a family dispute Sam wanders the streets late at night, then drifts back home after the freezing weather gets to him. Steve's car is still outside and it seems that he is spending the night at the family home. Sam is certain he won't sleep under the same roof He hops into the back of Steve's van and goes to sleep there. The next thing Sam hears is voices and the car starting. The van is being stolen and Sam is coming for the ride whether he likes it or not. Leanne isn't certain about the wedding either. She's bridesmaid and she hates the idea of wearing that purple, sorry grape, dress. Leanne's life is full of stress as she helps her mother prepare for the wedding, but her private life is in even more chaos. Is she still going with Danny, an Aboriginal youth who has disappeared for a few months to the outback? Or is she going to give up and go out with Jake, or Bruno, or Toby, or Lynton, or maybe Darren? Yes, she is definitely going to go with Darren. That's for certain.
This is Clark's third book about the Studleys. The first and second areHold My Hand Or Else: Library EditionandLiving with Leanne. This book can be read on its own as an independent novel, however, for best effect read the other two books first.
Clark has created an interesting novel by writing the first chapter from Sam's point of view, then the second chapter from Leanne's perspective, the third chapter back to Sam, and so on throughout the book. This way the reader gets to know both characters deeply. As you would expect the book can be appreciated by both girls and boys, but more importantly both groups get to see more of their opposite than would occur when reading an ordinary novel.
As usual Clark writes with her usual charm, good nature and wit. Sam's story zooms along full of excitement and surprise, and Leanne's is boisterous, smart and sometimes even sensitive.
This book is ideal for members of fractured families as the resulting emotional turmoil is dealt with sensitively and realistically. The book, however, is handled with a light touch, and anyone looking for in-depth analysis of the subject should look elsewhere.
This book is set in Australia, but that is unimportant to the plot. The reader does not have to understand anything special about Australia to enjoy the book.
