Poor reading style

The person who read this book had no inflection in her reading of this book which made it very boring

Gracefully written

The author created an eloquently written and realistic story about one woman's struggle with anxiety, guilt, multiple family dynamics and the adventure into discovering her true self. The story shows how, where and why anxiety can sometimes stem from events and experiences throughout our lives. It also shows how a person can use those experiences to grow into a graceful crow. As someone who both suffers from and comes from a family that struggles with anxiety, it was quite realistic and hit home in many ways. I believe this book can be helpful by allowing the reader to look through an empathetic window into the daily struggles a person with anxiety can face. I highly recommend this recommending this novel and will be purchasing it for both friends and family.

An engaging hero in an interesting setting with a strong supporting cast.

C.J. Box's game-warden hero, Joe Pickett, is an ethical, honest man who loves his wife, his daughters and his job. Each book in this superior series puts Joe into a position where his basic goodness is tested by poachers, government officials, murderers, serial killers and, sometimes, just plain stupid people who try his patience. The core of most of the books is Joe's relationship with his best friend, Nate Romanowski, Joe's 'darker half'. A loner, master falconer and federal fugitive. Their friendship and loyalty to each other adds depth to each of the well-plotted stories. This is not the best book in the series but I can certainly recommend it along with all the others. Each book stands alone but the cumulative effect of reading them in order is the better way to go. C.J. Box has also written a few unrelated novels so look for those that state 'A Joe Pickett Novel'.

"Don't trust a Fed."

The quote in the title comes from a Fed near the end of this novel. It is indicative of C.J. Box's Joe Pickett series for it is not just the Feds Pickett cannot trust. Throughout the series, Pickett has to fight the bureaucracies of local, state and federal agencies in order to get the bad guy. He also gets caught between tree huggers vs greedy developers, animal rights activists vs poachers and law vs justice.

In the Joe Pickett books, there are no good guys other than Pickett, his family and friend Nate. Oh, there is the occasional breakthrough like the female park ranger character in "Free Fire" but, on the whole, most every other character in the series is ruthless, ambitious, violent or incompetent. Everyone seems to have an agenda from the unrealistic and dogmatic environmentalist to the unethical and money-grubbing businessman. Nobody escapes C.J. Box's skewering in these books.

"Free Fire" is a fine example of how frustrating life is for Joe Pickett and how he has to deal with the corruption all around him in his pursuit of justice. In "Free Fire", Pickett is engaged by the new governor to investigate a murder in Yellowstone National Park. Pickett gets his old job back as Wyoming game warden but he is conducting his investigation on the sly--the governor has plausible deniability and offers little in the way of support for the assignment he has given Pickett.

Walthers outdoes Sparks by a long shot.

Walther's characters are never static, never one dimensional cut-outs. They have their faultsââsome significant ones, but we love them. Maybe because we see ourselves in them. Space in the Heart reveals the guilt and ambition and loss of the three main characters, and how they surmount their fears and become more than they thought they ever could be.

Walther employs dramatic irony and moves the plot forward. We readers know what the characters don't and we know it will be a painful hurdle to overcome.

Wonderfully done and a very satisfying read.

Compelling! A must-read.

Compelling! Waltherâs Space in the Heart held me spellbound. When I did exercise discipline and set the book down, I found I couldnât leave it down. I came back to it again and again, each time telling myself Iâd read just one more page, until finally I turned the last page.

Waltherâs characters captivated me and I stood alongside them throughout the novel, sharing in their frustrations and successes. His portrayal of a temperamental, angst-ridden teenage girl is amazingly spot on. Throughout the novel, as the father labors to provide all things for his daughter I found myself thinking that Mr. Walther must be one heck of a dad himself. And I was reminded of his dedication of the book to his own father, surely a very special man.

Space in the Heart is a story of sorrow, joy, despair, and hope; a story of courage among lifeâs challenges. It is a must-read for adults and teenagers alike.

Another wonderful story and journey

Last year around Christmas, I read Mr. Walther's novel, Broken Laces, after it popped up as a recommended book by Amazon. I was really pleasantly surprised and was swept up in the heartfelt story about a father's journey. I recommended this book to other people in my family who also loved it. It sparked many conversations because everyone read from different perspectives (as a father, son, mother, husband, ...)

And to my great surprise, after nearly a year, I see his new novel available from Amazon! Without hesitation, I downloaded this new novel.

very disapointing

What disappointed you about Sand?

I can hardly believe this book was written by the same writer of Wool-Shift-Dust. Although the general idea was original to begin with, it was badly written, very unclear explanations, cheap sentiment, too many words, pure fill-up.

What was most disappointing about Hugh Howeys story?

All the false sentiment was horrible. Also chaotic explanations and long-winded.

I am only a reader, not a writer so I cannot say.

All the scenes with the mother and the happy-clappy family nonsense.

it was building up to be a good story but then suddenly stopped. what happened????

Promising storyline- disappointing delivery

I was looking forward to the series continue and develop. But I just couldn't get in to any of the characters. I persevered- but I really don't think I will bother to follow any more books in the series now, I just don't care what happens. It's slow without you wanting to know more. It does have some interesting technology ideas, but again nothing to get excited about.

enjoyable

Really enjoyed this book, I've read most of the way through it but the audiobook made it a lot easier to finish it off.

I may have to listen to this again...

I tend to listen spasmodically throughout the day, and often cannot give full attention, so its possible I have missed things, but the story seems to have taken a long time to not really go anywhere conclusive.... but I am happy to be corrected.

However - my personal issues aside, the story is well written and is to the high standard we have come to expect from Hugh Howey. I look forward to future books in this series....

Christopher Raglands reading is excellent, and I will definitely be looking for other titles he has narrated - very enjoyable.

Gay fiction writers of today take note!

Today's fiction writers take note please - this is brilliant fiction which just happens to have a strong central character who is gay. It is a beautiful story which is layered, characters are complex and multidimensional and most of all it is a realistic plot.

I am so tired of listening to gay fiction which seems like I am stuck in a cheap B grade gay soap opera - thus reading this beautifully written story restored my faith in gay writers, although that said it was written and published in1991....

BEAUTIFUL WRITING, DIFFICULT SUBJECT

This is my first experience with this brilliant author whos novel is so beautifully written. I thought the narrator for this piece was poorly chosen and was talking way too fast. I finally abandoned the audio for the printed page and was only sorry that I hadnt done it sooner: This is not a book or an author whos work should be rushed through.

Having said that, I will admit that the subject matter (the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s) was at times very difficult to get through. I was living in San Francisco during this time. I wouldnt say I lived through it exactly because, while I knew A LOT of people who were affected by it, got sick and died from it, I certainly did not experience it quite so close up and personal. If you want to get the full effect of the full blown horror of the whole thing, this is definitely a good place to start. It provides a really good insiders view.

Wait for it...

Started this one and couldn't stand the female lead. Thought she was ungrateful and graceless. But something compelled me to keep reading and within a couple of chapters I liked her. A few more chapters and I loved her. By the end of this humorous, plausible tale, I understood her. Give this one a few chapters and be rewarded.

Note to narrator: EXCELLENT job. Just a friendly tip thoughin these parts they're not "pee-cans," they're "puh-khans." ;)
