So good I bought the hard copy
Ok so to read this you really need to have read the first book in the series, The String Diaries. These books are by far the best books I have ever downloaded. So good in fact that I limited my listening as I didn't want them to finish. I have bought the hard copies of both books for my family to read. Can't recommend this author highly enough.
Wonderful sequel to The String Diaries
A great sequel to The String Diaries, which should be read first. The world-building is terrific and the energy of the story has kept momentum. The author has a wonderful imagination and one could almost believe these people are grounded in real Hungarian folklore. These books have a wonderful pace and I could easily read more set in this world. Highly recommended.
Fantastic sequel to The String Diaries
This book picks up several years after the end of String Diaries and hits the ground running. The surprises start from page one and the story twists and turns until it's impossible to anticipate where the story is going. Strange new threats are introduced and the entire book races towards an appalling end.
It's so difficult to give a synopsis without giving away major story lines. We start with Leah, Hannah's daughter and discover more about her family's heritage and the links to Jacaab, the monster who has stalked them through generations. He's not dead. That's all that I'm prepared to say!
The plot swirls and the final climax is astounding. It will make you snivel and wipe your eyes. A really, really exciting book. I suppose it's possible there will be Book 3, but it can finish quite well right here.
    Do listen!

Give it time, it grows on you!
What made the experience of listening to Doc Martin: Mistletoe and Whine the most enjoyable?
The narrator is excellent and takes you into each situation in your minds eye to this beautiful harbour in Cornwall and the characters that live there.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Doc Martin: Mistletoe and Whine?
There are lots of them really, it's hard to think of just one, maybe meeting his parents again....
Have you listened to any of Mark Meadowss other performances? How does this one compare?
This is the first time and he gets each and every character spot on.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, it really is great to go back over again and again to experience the story...
    Any additional comments?
It did take me some time to get to grips with this audible, but maybe I was not concentrating or I felt that Mark Medows was the wrong chap to be the narrator - how wrong was I, he was excellent and even sounds like Doc Martin, as well as several others, even the kids voices he gets just right...just off to buy the other DM audible now.
    The entertaining Doc Martin
I love the TV series so listening to it is a sheer pleasure.
It is so entertaining. As one listens it is so easy to see the characters in play.
    Love it

    Critic Reviews:
Terrifically warm, with lovely, lively characters (Fiona Walker)
This story warms you like a cosy cup of cocoa (Closer)
As essential as tinsel and turkey if you want to get into that warm, fuzzy mood for Christmas (Closer)
    Members Reviews:
    Mediocre story, awful narration
What would have made Coming Home For Christmas better?
A different narrator - was difficult to tell whether the story was actually as bad as it seemed because I was so constantly irritated by the narration style - patronising and dull with really awful regional accents which didn't even seem to tie in with where the book was supposed to be based.
Would you be willing to try another book from Julia Williams? Why or why not?
    Probably not.
Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Penny McDonald?
Anyone! Someone who doesn't try to do accents they can't do.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    Disappointment
    Any additional comments?
If you're reading this,Julia Williams, use someone different next time!
Not really a standalone, 3rd in a series
Sorry to repeat what I wrote about A Merry Little Christmas, but Audible or the publishers have missed a trick by recording the later Hope Christmas books but not the first one.
Last Christmas (you can download to Kindle or buy the paperback) is the original and introduces us to Cath and Noël in London in the sort of fraught, pressured run up to the less than perfect Christmas most of us are all too familiar with. It's a lovely feel good Christmas book with a happy ending, perfect to sit down with in December - then these later books follow on.
This book's good value in itself as it follows the main characters through another year, another Christmas, the narration is ok but perhaps not brilliant, and I enjoyed it as the next episode in the series. Not sure how well it would stand alone for someone meeting the village of Hope Christmas for the first time.
So please Audible, record the first one soon!
    Dull and poorly narrated
If this book wasnt for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?
I don't know who might enjoy it...it certainly wasn't for me
Would you ever listen to anything by Julia Williams again?
    Not based on this tale
Would you be willing to try another one of Penny McDonalds performances?
    No
You didnt love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?
    No
    Narrator annoying but lovely story
I loved this story it's like an episode of the Archers! Light hearted, easy listening.
    Needs a better narrator though

    Members Reviews:
    An ok read
Like liked the way there were two narrators and the story flowed between the two of them but the ending was a bit poor and sudden. The male narrator could have done with a bit less monotone and made the male character. Alex. sound boring, Alex was a bit boring even about his job, that he loved. He did sound like a teacher.
    The book was ok.
    Amazing!
Review: how did it take me so long to read this book? I totally read Laura Tait and Jimmy Rice's books in the wrong order but if you end up doing that I can now confirm it doesn't matter. It was my love for The Night That Changed Everything (read it now) that gave me the shove to read this one. I actually downloaded the audiobook which mean that Holly and Alex's voices were distinct from each other and I'm really glad I shelled out for this one because that aspect made it and even more fun read. I found myself reading this is any opportunity I got, sitting in the car when I got home from work so that I could hear the end of the chapter!
I think out of the two main characters, I preferred Alexk over Holly, I know you shouldn't pick favourites and before you say anything, it's not just because he is a fellow teacher who went from teaching up north to teaching in a challenging London school (is he actually me?!) but I really liked the way he handled his life. He went for things and really made the most of what he had, whether that was a challenging class or a challenging room mate. He is a little naive when it comes to certain aspects of his life, including he friendship with Holly but I loved that about him. Best freind Kevin provides some pure comedy moments and I had some laugh out loud times in my car when he was involved. I really liked Holly too, I just felt frustrated by the choices that she made in life, as I'm sure I was meant to as a reader, she evoked real emotion in me which means she was incredible well-written as a character!
I loved the dual narrative of this book and also that fact that we have flashbacks so we get to hear from both characters and find out what has gone before in their friendship as well as where it stands now. It was a total Ross and Rachel type of relationship where you are willing things to happen between them and then Italians and Stray cats get involved (that was in Freinds not in the book but the thing they are hit with are essentially the same thing!) and you actually feel yourself getting more and more tense with each moment that passes. If you are a real romantic, you will love every moment of this love story not love story and if you are more of a cynic then you will love the missed opportunities too.

    Release date: 10-28-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios for Bloomsbury
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
A lyrical novel set in America and Ireland from the Story Prize-winning author of The Hill Road.
As he did so masterfully in the connected novellas of The Hill Road, Patrick OKeeffes first novel moves back and forth in time and place to weave the story of two Irish families forever linked by love, secrets, and their heritage. James Dwyer was born in rural county Limerick before moving to Dublin as a teenager and ultimately settling in Ann Arbor. One night James past appears in the form of a down-and-out man named Walter, who issues an invitation for James to come to Upstate New York to visit his old childhood neighbor, Kevin Lyons. Although neither James nor Kevin particularly cares for each other, theres no denying their complicated past. Kevin and Jamess sister, Tess, were lovers while James fell hard for Kevins sister, Una. Illuminating the precarious balance of family intimacies and how stories can carry over from one generation to the next, OKeeffes The Visitors further delivers on the elegant prose and plotting that earned him critical acclaim and the Story Prize for The Hill Road.
    Members Reviews:
    Compelling
I really enjoyed this novel and it is very well-written, with compelling characters and narrative surprises that gel together by the end. It loops around the present and past in the main character's life in the U.S. and Ireland and focuses a lot on two families in Ireland, the main character's and that of his father's friend. A reeunion between the friend's son and the main character drives much of the US parts. Much is revealed in vivid, well-selected detail in often graceful prose. O'Keefe has an excellent ear for dialogue, and without obviously trying for it, the sentences have a sort of Irish rhythm and accent. Next I am going to read his first book.
    Irish Catholic Family Dynamics
Oh the ties that bind - how hard to understand ourselves and our families! Jimmy has his flaws, but you will love him and root for him throughout the book. This book shows how strongly childhood actions and relationships persist. One may say kids mistreating another is just kids being kids, but we remember and it affects us.
This book also covers how poorly we understand our parents and how they got to be who they are.
Good on many levels - don't miss!
    lyrical novel
The Visitors is a profoundly lyrical and beautiful novel, but not necesary an easy read. The novel is told by Jimmy Dwyer, an Immigrant from Ireland, and it is variable in time and place and Jimmy's thoughts and memories shift their focus, interweaving the past and the present, as he constantly remembers, relives, and rediscovers his past through the refracting lens of time and changing relationships. It is a novel that is, at times tragic, and certainly melancholy in how history plays itself out and repeats itself, how Jimmy learns that the past is always with us, no matter how much one wishes to escape it. O'keefe's prose is breathtakingly beautiful. He captures Jimmy's voice perfectly and he is fully and complexly realized. The interleaving of time and place is expertly and subtly maintained and captured in the nuances of voice that define different places and relationships. This was an exquisite book that I will not soon forget
    Five Stars
I enjoyed it even more than his first book, looking forward to the next one.
    the punctuation was terrible.

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Hard Hed is a contemporary retelling of the Johnny Appleseed story. Hoosier Chapman, local historian and apple orchardist, has just been released from a Northwestern Ohio jail after serving two years for planting wild apple trees in a city park. Dropped at the State Line by a deputy sheriff, Hoosier treks west, overland and barefoot into Indiana state, recreating history and inventing myth, both public and private, along the way. Hoosier Chapman, the historian, yearns for a pre-colonial, pre-gunpowder freedom that lies just beyond the common fields, before the wetlands were drained and the forests cut down. Chaos and violence-like-fate-hound his every step. In five "Books" ranging in style from realism to fantasy to historical document to speculative fiction to lyric poetry, there is a joy of craft that shows through page after page. Hard Hed is part meta-story, part documentary, part violent romance, an unabashedly original work of fiction that roams in and out of time and place and point of view. Tidler has created an Indiana as Faulkner created a Mississippi and Steinbeck a California.

A New Millennium. On 31 December 1999, Australian advertising creative Guy Russell arrives in New York along with his fragile wife and their young son. A painful tragedy has led them to swap Melbourne for Manhattan, and seek a fresh start.
A New Beginning. With a new job secured at a thriving midtown agency, and temporary residence obtained in the Upper West Side's Olcott Hotel - a building with a morbid history of its own - Guy feels that now is the time to lay his troubles to rest.
A New Nightmare. Yet something won't let him. And as a sinister force from Guy's past begins to scratch its way back into his present, the behaviour of his son, Callum, also starts to become increasingly disturbing and chilling. As Guy begins to believe that Callum is being possessed by this dark force, others fear he is gradually dispossessing himself of his own sanity. And as Guy grapples with whether the evil tormenting him is in his surroundings, his son, or his own mind, he pushes himself ever closer to the edge.

    DESCENT INTO MADNESS
Entertaining and disturbing story that comes slowly to the boil.
The story is told through the voice of Guy Russell, an advertising copywriter, who is also a husband and father to a young son. When the family's second child is tragically stillborn, Guy takes his heartbroken wife and child to New York. There he hopes the change of scene will help restore the family to the normality it enjoyed in earlier times, and also to further his career. But what Guy finds in New York is not healing but a sequence of frightening events that grow in severity and strangeness to a very disturbing conclusion.
Iâll leave it there in order not to spoil what happens for interested readers. Suffice it to say that a lot of nasty stuff goes down.
There is a lot to recommend the book. I particularly enjoyed the authorâs use of telling the story through the voice of Guy, who is damaged by the family tragedy much more than he lets on. He is also either unwilling or unable to acknowledge the severity of the events as they unfold. Guy has a fondness for alcohol which casts doubt in both his mind and the reader's as to what is actually happening to the familyâall of which makes the story very compelling.
In the end, The Evil Inside is a story about a man struggling to keep his family together in the face of events he canât quite understand and hostile forces he wonât comprehend until itâs tragically too late. Check it out.
