    A very predictable story.
I found this rather an irritating book to listen to. It was slow and repetitive the emails were infuriating although if you were reading the book you'd probably gloss over who sent what to who and at what time and the subject of the email. The character's full stories came late in the book and by the time all was revealed you'd already guessed it so no big surprises. Despite the above it was a pleasant story with predictable happy ending.

    Autor:: Carsten Klook
    Erzähler: Carsten Klook
    Format: Abridged
Spieldauer: 4 hrs and 5 mins
    Sprache: Deutsch
    Veröffentlichungsdatum: 10-23-14
Herausgeber: creative talents // Institut für Internagut
    Kategorien: Fiction, Contemporary

Length: 8 hrs and 40 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-23-14
    Publisher: Pan Macmillan Publishers Ltd.
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
I miss him with every breath and heartbeat. He should have been my happy ending. Instead, he is the sad beginning to my story.'
Olivia and Luca Felicone had known each other nearly all their lives, but when they fell in love as teenagers and eloped to London, they broke the hearts of those closest to them.
Luca's parents run Marinella's restaurant, the colourful hub of life in the otherwise bleak northeastern seaside town of Watersford, and his mother, Angela, has never forgiven Olivia for causing such a rift in her beloved family.
On a freezing January night Olivia's life is shattered when she learns that Luca has been killed in a car accident on the M1. She is left with nothing, and after suffering from weeks of overwhelming grief, she abandons her job and returns North to where Luca has been buried in Watersford, just to be close to him - even though she knows she will not be welcome at Marinella's.
Olivia's chance meeting with Luca's married twin brother, Marc, leads to the realization that he is experiencing a loss almost as painful as her own. Their desolation draws them into an affair which both know has no future, but fills the space where Luca should be. It is a course of action that can only spiral out of control, and when it does, the consequences are both explosive and cruel.
The Love of My Life is a beautiful novel that portrays both the innocence of childhood, and the dynamics of love and loss with deftness and sensitivity. It is, above all, a stunning debut from an author with a unique and natural narrative voice.

Could have been better with different Structure!
    Any additional comments?
This was a good story, with well drawn characters. Unfortunately, it switched between past and present at almost every chapter. This felt messy and at times, was distracting. It would have been much better to have sections of several chapters at a time for each phase. Jojo Moyes does that very well and this approach would, in my view, have improved this novel immensely. The narration itself was excellent. Unfortunately, the editing was a bit sloppy.

    Language: English
    Release date: 10-22-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios for Bloomsbury
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Billy's mother is dead. He knows - because he reads about it in magazines - that people die every day in ways that are more random and tragic and stupid than hers, but for 19-year-old Billy and his little brother, Oscar, their mother's death in a bungled street robbery is the most random and tragic and stupid thing that could possibly have happened to them. Now Billy must be both mother and father to Oscar, and despite what his well-meaning aunt, the PTA mothers, social services, and Oscar's own prodigal father all think, he feels certain that he is the one for the job. The boys' new world - where bedtimes are arbitrary, tidiness is optional, and healthy home-cooked meals pile up uneaten in the freezer - is built out of chaos and fierce love, but it's also a world that teeters perilously on its axis. As Billy's obsession with his mother's missing killer grows, he risks losing sight of the one thing that really matters: the only family he has left.

    Witty and poignant
Great read. Reminiscent of JP Donleavy in its depiction of a young man falling apart. Nice satirical view of social norms around grief and mental mental health.
The British equivalent of Catcher in the Rye, but much, much better--and funnier!
The British equivalent of Catcher in the Rye, but much, much better--and funnier!
    Smart novel
Although tis is in the first person in an argot I don't entirely understand (north of England kid) it is such a smart book. The publishers aren't doing anything for it, but buy it.
When It's Good It's Very Good
Here's the thing - I didn't buy the characters, the premise is hard to swallow, substantial developments in the story are unrealistic, and on close reflection a lot of the plot doesn't make sense. But I admired and enjoyed the book anyway. There are bits - set scenes, throwaway lines, little moments of insight and honesty and authenticity - that are beautifully handled and nicely captured.
And as I think about it, there are many well loved or at least appreciated books that are carried by completely unconvincing characters or totally implausible story lines. This isn't supposed to be a "realistic" novel in the angry young man tradition. It isn't slice of life or kitchen sink drama. It isn't a sprawling epic or an historical fiction or a classic bildungsroman. There are touches of all those styles, but mostly the novel provides an opportunity for the author to riff on all manner of contemporary issues, and to explore questions of family and identity and sibling love, through the eyes, mind, and heart of a character who is articulate, wise, flawed, young, and idealized in a way that only good fiction allows.
The book has variously been described as raw, funny, heartfelt, sad, comic, gritty, heartbreaking, confused, happy, bleak, wry and tender. It is all that. It is confessional, almost more like a journal or diary turned into a running narrative, and if you like the hero's voice and are interested in what he's interested in, (or if you just like tight, sharp word craft), I would think you would enjoy this a great deal.
Please note that I received a free ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

Nothing shouted out to me in this book
It didn't seem to end, more like it just quit. It was as stated, only a taste of what could have been a very interesting story
The trouble with belonging and not belonging...
McWatt has once again captured with beautiful prose the complications around belonging and not belonging -- to places and to people. Her subtle yet heart-wrenching observations can make the reader cringe, often in recognition of having experienced the same rejection, or perhaps the hesitation, to truly connect and commit with consequence. The unreal reality of Ned Time is brilliant. We have all lived in Ned Time at some point in our lives...
    What marmalade?
this was not my favorite book to read...Far from it. very jerky. thought after thought was introduced with no warning without even finishing the first thought. wouldn't really recommend this to one single soul.
    Love the title
It just got started when it was suddenly over. Had I browsed the book in a book store I might have had a head's up that it was a short story.
Author is a good writer, just give us more.
    Wasn't my type reading
This book was more like a short story in a magazine. It jumped around and then ended.
The character was weak and childish. Sorry, but I can't say this way an enjoyable read.

After that, it was every man for himself. At least, thats how Nate and his brother, Ira, saw it. Now, Nate is 45 years old. Hes losing his wife. He lost his career. His mom is losing that same home in Santa Ana and Nate thinks he may be losing his mind. Thats just the beginning of Indian Paintbrush, a darkly, bittersweet comic tale told by Nate himself. He thinks hes writing a journal for his psychiatrist but, as his recollections grow darker, he realizes that he has let every bad moment in his life keep him from reaching for anything good. This could be his last chance at remembering just what it is he cant live without. Some people grow up hoping things will change but, very often, the only thing time changes is our memories... Maybe there are times when "family" comes down to a group of people you just cant stand, who you actively hate. And these are the people with whom you will share some of your fondest memories. The audiobook version, read by the author, is beautifully scored with the Josh Woodward song, "Flutter by Butterfly".
