Excellent Storytelling!

Our Hero, several bad guys, and of course a beautiful woman needing to be rescued. Add some orphan children and mix it all together, and you have an excellent story.

Fast paced and mysterious happenings

I had a difficult time putting this book down. The relationship with the children was very much fun to see as time progressed. I thought there might be a romantic connection, but that would not fit in the series of stories,of which I hope to continue.

Excellent Book

This was a very good book, it kept me interested all the way thru the book, I buy most of my books in Kindle, the Kindle price was very good, if you enjoy reading Westerns, the you will glad you bought this book.

We are not going to rate all of the O'Brien series, we just want you to know, we like them all so far and we have read 10....

Check one out and make up your own mind...Start with the Silver Trail, if you like it, at the end of the book the series is listed, stay in order they sort of refer to the last read but not always....

Marked for Death

Bridges does it again!!! I have read at least six or eight of his books, and each one is excellent!!! His blending of plot and characters is masterful. It's hard to put his books down. If you are a fan of westerns, you owe it to yourself to read one of his books!

A compelling adventure

Weaving together different historical and cultural threads, Chris Angus has written an imaginative and fast-paced tale of love, loyalty, betrayal, and sacrifice. He has created a wonderfully elaborate story based on very human ingredients, such as greed, patriotism, and the common good. The pacing builds to a suspenseful and satisfying conclusion. An inventive adventure.

Wild Ride

If you read any of Christopher Angus's novels you'll see a common thread that pulls them all together. Mixing real history with fictitious characters, Angus brings the reader into a world of adventure that reminds one of any classic swashbuckler story or film. The structures of the novels are set up like a film script with several stories happening at once each with its rising tensions culminating in a climax, only to be pushed further to the next highlight.

Mapungubwe Hill is no exception, with a young Winston Churchill subjected to cliffhanger episodes all centered around a hidden treasure known by this name. Like 'Flypaper', "The Last Titanic Story" and 'London Underground", there are ancient tombs, magnificent palaces, wars, secrets, romance and rivalries. Again the reader is pulled into the challenging world of World War II and Hitler and his forces.

Mapungubwe Hill is just as exciting a ride as any of Angus's previous novels. I enjoy his cliffhanger style and the interplay of characters and situations. If you liked any of his previous works, you'll enjoy Mapungubwe Hill just as much.

Winston Churchill as never before

Winston Churchill is my hero, the greatest man of the 20th Century. It took me a long time to get into the story as I approached the tampering with history with trepidation.

Fiction based on fact

This is a "fictional" story written with passion written about a real incident in World War II. Set in 1943 when the allies had no real forces to threaten the Germans in France but at the same time trying to divert German forces from other areas (especially the Eastern Front) the idea was to persuade the Germans that an actual threat of invasion existed (look up Operation Cockade). All the incidents portrayed in the book actually happened. The Secret Service person involved was Claude Dansey, the Frenchman involved was Henri Dericourt. The SEO agent was betrayed to the Germans by the Secret Service (Dansey) who hoped that the Germans would never believe that a British agent would be betrayed by his own side and so would believe that a real operation was underway to prepare for an invasion of France. This brave SOE agent went to his death in German concentration camps believing that (under severe torture) he had inadvertently betrayed an actual operation. It is also true that at the end of World War II all records concerning the SOE were destroyed so that incidents like that mentioned above would not be exposed.

Solid Espionage Novel

Split between World War II and the late '80s, this semi-thriller begins with the announcement of the death of at least one of its heroes. At the end of a tedious session of Parliament, a relatively obscure member asks a question about a betrayed Special Operations Executive resistance operation in occupied France in 1943. An intelligence officer named Chapman is assigned the task of looking into the matter and the book turns back in time to 1940. There, the reader meets Philip Maclean, a young painter living in France when the Germans invade. He escapes to England, but decides to return as a spy in order to be closer to his love, a stereotypically beautiful girl next door. At the same time, a Frenchman named Masson is also introduced. A combination of con-artist, salesman, and Walter Mitty, he's a slimy character whose priority is looking out for number one. He too escapes to England, and is installed as an important cog in supplying Maclean's network. Allbeury does an excellent job quietly showing how Maclean develops relationships with resistance members in a village an hour outside Paris, and slowly are carefully builds his network. When the network goes active, it's quickly rounded up and Maclean is sent with others to Auschwitz, where he dies, as foreshadowed in the prologue.

Back in the present day, Chapman starts digging into what happened to the old network, and spends time talking to Maclean's widowed love, and various other survivors. As he shuttles around Europe, it quickly becomes clear that Masson is at the center of the mystery of what happened.

Decent Enough

I *really* liked the premise of this book when I read the "blurb", I mean who doesn't love a maverick hot headed card sharp leading a bunch of misfits?

In the end though i did leave slightly disappointed. I will try the second book in the series to see how it develops because I did enjoy it but the author never really seemed to develop his characters to the level I thought they deserved. The battle scenes were decent though and the quality narration kept my attention throughout.

I can't strongly recommend this but equally it was worth listening to. The problem is that with the likes of Cornwell lurking around every corner books like this in the genre have to be pretty special to get a lot of attention. I don't think Iain Gale quite managed that in this volume but he did come up with an interesting concept that could be developed.

It obviously has to be compared to the Sharpe series and it compares well.

Not Overly Keane...

A decent enough attempt to build on Bernard Cornwall's Sharpe's series however it failed to live up the expectations.

The premise for the story sounded good at the start and the narrator did a good job on maintaining interested however the biggest issue I had was that there were no plot twists at all! Everything that happened was extremely predictable and some sub-plots which at the beginning seemed like they would be a major point of the story were finished off rather to quickly and neatly for my liking.

It almost seemed like the central character had a charmed life and it never felt like a situation had arisen where he was in danger or having to rise to much of a challenge.

I managed to listen to the book until the end but it seemed to end with a rush like the author had suddenly realised the book was nearly finished and he had unanswered plots to resolve. A decent enough book for someone with an interest in the era who doesn't want to be taxed mentally or concentrate hard to keep up with the plot!

Keane's Company

Not a bad story I just felt I'd been here before to some extent due to being a fan of Richard Sharpe. Nice twist though is that Keane is an exploring officer so it does give you another slant to the history of the Peninsula war.
