It could have been good

The premise for this book and the story line, although not original, could have been a great tale with broad character development. Stories that span generations should be epic. This one was not. It started out well but soon some of the characters became so haphazardly and thinly sketched you had a difficult time keeping track of who begat whom. At times the story seemed so rushed I felt like the author just wanted to be done with it. People came and went so quickly, their lives barely touched upon and their story left untold. Often the dialog was vapid and juvenile and very poorly written and did little to move the story forward. It also became clear that little, if any research was done to properly address the language and social norms of the time period. I wanted to like it, because this is one of my favorite genres. Few things are more enjoyable than being totally consumed by a story and its characters and being transported to a different place and time. This one failed on all levels. I see there are some stellar reviews. Maybe the reviewers haven't read truly great epic novels so they have lowered expectations. It's not really a waste of a credit, but I also wouldn't recommend it to anyone. The narrator was excellent, but could not save the story from itself.

I enjoy it each time

I am a fan of Ken Colley who is the narrator of this audio book. I have listened to it many times. I enjoy it each time. Mr. Colley's narration is a bit unique in that he doesn't speak as clearly as other book narrators to whom you may have listened. I don't mind it at all and it doesn't take anything away from the listening experience for me. Interesting story that I wasn't familiar with until downloading this audio.

True love endures

Who was your favorite character and why?

Elspeth (Sue). She was so eloquent in her letters. And she never gave up. A strong,yet vulnerable, woman.

Have you listened to any of the narratorss other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but they were all great. I have to confess that I have a weakness for the Scottish accent.

If you could rename Letters From Skye, what would you call it?

I wouldn't rename it at all. It's perfect just as it is.

I shared it with my mother and she loved it too.

I absolutely loved it.

This book was wonderful and so easy to listen to - and it was a great story. I listened to it in the car and sometimes I wouldn't get out of the car until the end of a chapter. I totally recommend this book. The readers were excellent, however, it took me a while to catch onto their accents and at the beginning I didn't realise there were two different time periods, but once I did, it was very easy to follow the story.

This is not the type of book I would normally read but I was checking it out for my elderly mother. I did not expect to enjoy it as much as I did and therefore I have no hesitation in recommending it for any age group. It is a rarity nowadays - a great book with no sex, violence or bad language!

The letters format of the novel made it perfect for audio. Hearing the voices read their own letters brought the story to life.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Letters From Skye?

The fast pace when Margaret, the daughter, took over her mother's search towards the end.

What about the narratorss performance did you like?

All the narrators were excellent, making the letters real. The accents highlighted the characters.

This would have been a good book to read but was really elevated by being dramatised.

Riveting!

Where does Sounds of War rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

It's one of my favorites, such an incredible story.

What did you like best about this story?

The sounds that pulled you into the story, it really gave you the feeling that you were there standing there watching the whole thing go down.

Which character as performed by F. William Baldwin was your favorite?

All of them, he did a fantastic job voicing each one. Each had depth and breadth in my mind. He is a very gifted narrarator.

Who was the most memorable character of Sounds of War and why?

Quite honestly that main character, the descriptiveness of his personal voice really pulled you into the story and held you there.

Any additional comments?

This is an incredible story of War from a soldier's eyes. Sometimes we forget that soldiers have feelings and can be afraid in battle just like we would be. The descriptiveness of this story pulls you in and doesn't let you go. You find yourself rooting for them, yelling at them, laughing and crying with them. It really lets you "see" the story in the soldier's eyes. The narrator does a great job of giving each character a certain depth that sets them apart from the others. This is a unique and wonderful book with a gripping and riveting story line that is truly amazing.

The Sounds of War is a deep dive, no holds barred

What did you love best about Sounds of War?

What impressed me the most was that someone who 'went over there' thought it important enough to remember, take home, and share with the rest of us these very subtle experiences. Having served in the military myself, I have a deep personal connection to these little things. Some I have never forgotten, others, I only recalled while listening to Sounds of War audio book. Personally, this book made me realize that many of these colorful 'things' from my own experiences had been lost to my memory because I had intentionally forgotten as much as possible. For the first time in 25 years, those colorful

little 'things' are coming to the foreground of my memory and I find they are all meaningful. For me, Sounds of War was like a painting done by a different kind of brush!

What did you like best about this story?

The Sounds of War is a novel with a purpose. It intends to bring the day-to-day, lowest level details about one soldier's wartime experiences home to the reader by stimulating the very five senses thru which we all experience this world.

Which scene was your favorite?

With regard to character development, scene setting, scene transitioning, and overall story development, Thomas Ferreolus has organized and narrated a well thought out story that was easy flowing. Characters come and go...and if you have ever served in the military, you will remember that the friends you make often come and go in one patrol.

A Charming Little Detective Story

Patrick James O'Malley, a former Union soldier turned private detective, is the star of this novel. He is a well written and very likeable protagonist. It begins with O'Malley living in Edgar Allan Poe's cottage in the Bronx where he has determined he will prove that Poe did not die of drink but of homicide. To further complicate the story O'Malley once worked for Poe as his manuscript messenger and accompanied him on many visits around the city of New York. O'Malley looks up to Poe and could never dream of Poe's name being drug through the mud. His search for the truth leads him to another famous author of the time, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Evidently Longfellow and Poe hated each other and were constantly belittling each other to the press. It is amusing how Longfellow is portrayed in this novel.

There are other characters in this novel which will pull at your heart strings as well and some that are just pure evil. One of the evil ones is a man named John Anderson who lives in, are you ready,... Sleepy Hollow. Yes the same Sleepy Hollow made famous by Washington Irving in his well known story "The Headless Horseman." In fact, one of the things I loved about this book is the way Musgrave sprinkles literary references throughout.

One of the characters I most adore is Becky Charming, a beautiful madam, who is in love with O'Malley. Unfortunately, O'Malley has problems with intimacy so the tension builds. O'Malley is obviously quite smitten with Charming, not just for her good looks but her amazing intelligent as well, but finds himself at a loss as to how to close the deal so to speak. However, they make a fantastic duo in search of the bad guys and I found Charming to be an excellent addition to the novel.

Finally there is McKenzie, head of a ruthless gang known as the Plug Uglies. McKenzie is not a man to be trifled with but he takes a liking to O'Malley and in the end becomes a somewhat reluctant hero of the story. To say the least about McKenzie he is a complicated man.

Overall I really enjoyed this book. It was a quick and easy read and I look forward to book two in the series. If you like detective novels littered with literary references; beautiful women chasing after the protagonist; and a fearless hero, then you will love this novel.

Very well done!

Jim Musgrave's novel Forevermore is a fascinating look into the death of Edgar Allen Poe. The master of Gothic died under just as mysterious of circumstances as many of his famous tales.

The book is inspired by the author's experience of playing on the resurrected University of Chicago Maroons a/k/a the Monsters of the Midway. PLATO PLAYS AMERICAN FOOTBALL

I have never read a novel like this one. It is about American football even though it touches on other topics. Although I know next to nothing about the rules governing this sport, I was impressed by the technicalities of the game and the strength, dedication and passion the author writes so clearly about. Academic career versus sports career is a big issue in this book, and the central character chooses the latter after much debate and heartbreak.

Historical content good, but not the fictional.

It is not good when you start a book and don't believe in the feasibility of the characters' first actions. These actions didn't fit the characters' personalities. Once this feeling was lodged in my head I could never throw it off. The characters, their relationships and their actions were not credible.

This is a book of historical fiction that depicts the first years after WW2 in Germany. The setting is Hamburg and the year is 1946. What saved me from giving the book only one star is the accurate and interesting description of the situation in Germany at this time. It was split into four zones, controlled by the English, the Americans, the French and the Russians respectively. The political tensions between the nations are emerging.

The dramatic ending is cinematic in tone. It was NOT to my taste. Talk about unbelievable! Talk about cute! Talk about tying up all the strings into a neat little bow! This book has in fact two titles: the second is The Picture Book, and that is the more appropriate!

I don't mind sex in a book, but every darn relationship was propelled by sex. This too was not believable. Did the author do this to attract contemporary readers?

I liked the historical but not the fictional content of this book.

(The narration by Leighton Pugh was fine.)

Couldn't stop listening

Really enjoyed this book. Great literary fiction set during a difficult, little explored period in history. Atmospheric descriptive writing and good characterisation, with excellent narration. I couldn't stop listening.

Democracy up close and personal

I picked this up on 2 for 1 Audiobook offer. I had never heard of this book or author before but glad I now do.

It is a story told in the post Second World War Germany and the role of the different allied groups i.e. the British, French, Russians in forming the 'new' Germany. It is the story of a British family who come to Germany to share a home with a German family.

It is interesting to see the way of life at the time and the lives of the ragged begging German children and the currency they use to barter and get vouchers i.e. Cigarettes. If you have Cigarettes it seems you can get anything!

Its interesting how the Germans had to go through this 'cleansing' process to prove they were not affiliated with Hitler.

a well written story with likeable characters who draw you into their world of bombs and survival. a good wartime story.

kim hicks was ok performing the story but I found I didn't like the voice she gave one of the girls.
