More than a good mystery...
Great characters and storyline. I sure learned a lot about wild fires and what goes into fighting them. This seem particularly timely with the fires in CA. I enjoyed an evening getting to know these characters, and I have already downloaded the only other book of hers available on kindle. i had to order another one from a third party. I hope amazon gets these digital soon.
Murder is just part of this complex tale.
Jamaica Wild is a BLM employee who, like many wild land fire fighters in the West, leaves her regular government job to face danger with other members of her crew when a wildfire rages out of control. One of her first assignments, when she arrives at the base camp for the Colorado Chimney Rock Fire, is to find a Native American man last seen walking into an area now part of the primary fire scene.
When the fire suddenly turns toward her, she rushes to leave the area without finding the missing Grampa Ned. After the fire passes, she finds the body of the old man in the burned over area. An autopsy confirms he was murdered.
This book is a complex weaving of plot lines: the murder of a much-disliked man, an out-of-control wild fire, the life and death of fire fighters on the line, archaeological digs on Indian lands, the belief systems of several Native American tribes, an important Native American ceremony, PC politics, the personal demons of several main characters and raising and loving a pet wolf.
I enjoyed this book. But there were just too many things going on. I learned more than I wanted to know about fighting wild fires. And the discussion of the beliefs of various tribes was, of necessity, superficial. I like murder mysteries to focus on the murder.
But if you like a broad view book with action on a number of levels you will probably enjoy Wild Inferno.
Wild Series
This series (Wild Inferno, Wild Indigo and Wild Sorrow) makes Nevada Barr look wimpy. I didn't think I'd want to read another mystery where the heroine gets the crap beat out of her, either by other humans or by nature, but Ault is different. Jamaica Wild acts a lot more humane toward both the wildlife and indigenous population in her BLM territory in New Mexico. Her relationships with animals and native americans are fascinating and this series is definitely worth the time and expense. I had to read each one twice to get every detail and description straight, because the first read of each one was virtually non-stop, high speed. The wolf survives, by the way.
and I love her world and her characters
I fear this review will be repetitious, too similar to my review of Sandi Ault's first Wild Mystery, although this book is not a copy of the first. Ault writes a tight mystery, and I love her world and her characters, even her non-human character, the wolf, Mountain.
In Wild Inferno, the mystery is set against a wildfire that threatens a sacred Pueblo ceremonial site while the tribe is camping there to observe a rare celestial event. I'm writing this review months after reading the book, and I still tense up when I recall certain scenes when the characters faced death and heartache.
This time, the feeling that I've lived the story along with the characters is even stronger.
