Light, Smart and Fun

I loved the Monk TV series, and have either read or listened to all of the books by Lee Goldberg.

Angela Brazil does an excellent job narrating as Nathalie, capturing the character and making me see Monk through her eyes.

The story is very good - if you like enjoyable, not-dark mysteries. While there is a main story, a main mystery to be solved, Monk (as in the other books) solves "mini-crimes" along the way. So, it's entertaining, does not drag on, and is a nice, pleasant listen.

The story is true to the characters from the TV show. Since the Monk characters are so well known to the reader, you fall right into the story quickly. Although the mystery has some nice plot twists, the book is not great literature, I and I would not recommend it to a friend who was not already a fan of Monk.

Too Cool For School

A big white man is murdered in cold blood in the streets of Harlem in front of countless bystanders. But who is the killer? The drunken crazed man who's chased him from a bar, or a member the Real Cool Muslims, a gang of kids dressed up as arab sheikhs? Why was he killed? Out of anger, just for kicks, or did he have it coming? Detectives Grave Digger Jones and Coffin Ed are on hand to apprehend the culprits, but one of the kids is killed when Grave Digger thinks one of the Real Cool Muslims is throwing acid into his already burned face, a prank gone very wrong: it was only perfume. Then his young daughter turns out to be embroiled in this mess, ensuring that the Harlem detective duo will do what needs to be done to save her and resolve what turns out to be a truly sordid case. This third instalment of the Harlem Cycle was entertaining, but I felt, not as strong as the two previous books in the series. However, I know that there are more great reads further ahead, so I'll carry on and go wherever Chester Himes takes me; the journey is sure to be filled with unique individuals and plenty of surprises.

The ability to truthfully characterize people in the black community before the 80's. The characterizations remind me of my childhood.

Disappointed...

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

The Deborah Knott series is one of my favorites. However, this was one that I could have skipped. I would have liked to see Deborah and Dwight work together as a team with a little more time spent on their personalities/relationship, with less spent on all the various NY characters who seemed to get more time than they were worth (such as the NY detective and her roommate) while not advancing the story.

Has Three-Day Town turned you off from other books in this genre?

No. I'll still read the next in the series.

What does C.J. Critt bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

She is by far my favorite reader. I've tried new authors because she was the reader.

Could you see Three-Day Town being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

No. But there are other stories in the series that would work.

If you could sum up Three-Day Town in three words, what would they be?

Well written, well narrated - as expected.

Deborah, but the secondary characters are good as well

Can't Get Past The Narration

I very much enjoy Margaret Maron's books. I've read them all and have enjoyed each one. I thought listening to them would be a pleasure as well but I'm sorry to say I cannot 'hear' Deborah in C.J. Critt's narration. She sounds like a New England transplant, not the "Bootlegger's Daughter". There's not a trace of any Southern accent. Curiously however Dwight sounds quite Southern. So I will stick to Margaret Maron in print.

I went with a neutral rating for the story since I only got about 1/3 of the way through when I decided the printed version would better suit.

Deborah and Sigrid in same book

Margaret Maron always delivers a well-written story with excellent characterization, and this is no exception, albeit not one of the strongest entries in either the Deborah Knott or Sigrid Harald series. I read this book on paper when it came out last fall and found it a bit flat and the Sigrid character non-engaging. Then, I read the Sigrid books over the past few months before listening to Three-Day Town. I found it much more interesting with the background on Sigrid fresh in my mind. I think that those who know only Deborah will be disappointed as she is not really the focus here, and frankly seems a bit stupid.

Fans of the either or both series will want to read this one, but I don't recommend it as a stand-alone. It's an interesting update on the characters from both series, but does not fare well as a stand-alone.

The end of a 20 year search...

In Desperation is another solid suspense on the Jack Gannon series. There are three books on this series. I found Vengeance Road, which is the first one to be spellbinding. I wasn't crazy about the second but this one is also very good.

Gannon hasn't seen his sister since she disappeared 20 years ago. He's looked for her periodically over the years but has pretty much resigned himself to the fact that she is dead. His parents died looking but never knowing what happened to her.

Now, out of the blue his sister has called him. He's a well known journalist and she's the one who pushed him to to journalism. She needs his help. Her daughter has been kidnapped and if she can't find the $5 million her boss has stolen from them they will kill her.

What a ride this turns out to be.

Graham Rowat does an excellent job narrating.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

The narrator is flat and speaks in a monotone in many places; in others, he is overly dramatic. He mispronounces Spanish which beomes intrusive.

Where are the editors?!?!

I was fairly entertained by the first book in the series: A Good Thief's Guide to Amsterdam. It was fun largely because of meeting a new engaging character, and Simon Vance's reading carries the story. But it was also mostly forgettable, so I'm glad I got it on sale.

This book on the other hand is memorable, but not because the story is compelling. This one is memorable because of the glaring grammatical errors and odd sentence structure throughout the book. There were so many errors in verb conjugation, I looked the author up to see if the books were written in another language and simply translated poorly. I did find several reviews in which the reviewer not only commented on the grammar but also, having read the book in print, commented on problems with punctuation and spelling.

Simon Vance certainly had a challenge with this production. It must have driven him crazy to perform this book without correcting the grammar along the way. But he performed with his usual panache and made the book endurable enough that I actually did finish listening to it.

A Fun, Fun, Fun Comic Mystery!

Would you consider the audio edition of The Good Thief's Guide to Paris to be better than the print version?

It has to be the best... with the word pictures painted by Ewan & enacted by the excellent voice of Simon Vance, nothing could have been better.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Charlie Howard no doubt! It was suggested he was a smooth cheeky thief like a Gary Grant character, & that's true. He is the most likable thief since Grant's "To Catch A Thief".

Which scene was your favorite?

Not to give anything away, but the several forays across the roof tops of Paris were most nostalgic & picturesque.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, the scenes it inspired made me laugh out loud!

I took a chance on spending a credit on an author unfamiliar to me but I liked the idea of the story, the reviews were good, & Vance does't do bad books!

This is # 2 in the "Good Thief's Guide to... " series. It can stand alone on it's own merits, I chose it for the setting in Paris. It is a great comic mystery for a change from the more serious British mysteries I listen to/read. I had just finished Phil Rickman's "To Dream of the Dead" which I enjoyed but needed a well written, lighthearted, romp & this was perfect.

I was disappointed with the story when I finally finished

This story started out to be a real interesting story until I got about halfway through it. From that point on the author could have left out about 30 or 40 pages. I finally just started skipping page after page because it was more about the history of voodoo and magic than what I thought was necessary to tell the story. Then the ending kind of left me hanging for more about the boys getting back to their family. I was disappointed with the story when I finally finished.

Kept me guessing all the way through

This book was really well written, with believable characters that were well developed. The story line was great-I read a LOT of mysteries/thrillers but I definitely didn't guess the ending of this book. I really sympathized with the main character and kept rooting for him. The book is a little long-it probably could have been edited down a little-but I still finished it in 2 days.

Plot/Storyline: 4 Stars

The storyline was unique with not only two children missing at once, but a set of identical twins. The police are at a loss because if ransom was the motive, why take both children with double the trouble? This would also fit for a pedophile.

The father, Alex, refuses to give up and quits his job to chase down leads. His leads take him across the country and back again. What made this journey stand out is how much the reader gets to learn about the different aspects of the case as he finds them. I learned about whippets (a breed of dog), origins of magic, a little voodoo, origami, and much more. These details show what a rich and diverse world we live in.

There were some superfluous scenes in this novel that could have been cut out while leaving the story completely intact. For example, there is a portion with a `voodoo witch doctor' that could have been deleted. While I enjoyed learning much of the voodoo history, the scene I refer to was just unnecessary.

I felt the ending was a bit rushed.

This one is so good, and hard because it shows a vunerable side of Skye yet the mystery is great and I've listened several times.

Blast from the Past

Where does Murder of a Royal Pain rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

So far this book has got to be the best one out of this series. This one really had me thinking about the past books and what happened in each of the other murders. It was wasn't just its own murder mystery book but it brought up murders from the past books in this series..

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

yes this book actually did keep me on the edge of my seat, because I knew that the women who were murdered where not the ones that the killer intended to murder, they had to be accidents, but I couldn't really figure out who the main victim was supposed to be. A big part of me figured it had to be Sky but then I couldn't figure out who and the motive,

What about Christine Letos performance did you like?

Her voice changes for each character, she brings personality and emotion to the characters and it makes you have an emotional connection with them and with their situation.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

yes it really was. if I had the time I think I would try to listen to this whole series in one sitting.

Very predictable

It was the same story with just a different title. I started out really liking this character but it's hard to now.

It's getting better and better

This was a great book. It ties up the loose ends of the previous book and has Skye coming full circle. I don't want to give away any spoilers so I will leave it at that. The plot and pacing was great. The mystery was well planned and the subplots were also interesting. There is a lot going on in this book. It tops the previous book and I can't wait to read the next one.
