    Erzähler: Karlheinz Gabor
    Format: Unabridged

    Sprache: Deutsch
    Veröffentlichungsdatum: 08-29-14
    Herausgeber: Audio Media Digital

    Another masterpiece by Meyrink
Having now read all of Meyrink's novels that have been translated into English, I can honestly say that, although it is too bad his work isn't well known in English, it isn't surprising either. It is simply too challenging for most readers that don't have a specialized interest.
I will leave it to Mike Mitchell's excellent biography "Vivo" to recount the details of Meyrink's life. It is even well outlined in the introduction to the Dover edition of "The Golem" and needs no further recounting here. What is not so well known and is of interest is that Meyrink was an avid explorer of occult groups in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was, as well, a member of the Gold und Rosenkreuter order of 17th century, as well as the Asiatic Brethren, a Rosicrucian Order that specialized in Kabbalah as well as alchemy, and included many jewish members.
Working within such fraternities clearly Meyrink took up an active work with dreams. Throughout his works runs this one common thread, that the imagery is definitely of a world where dream bleeds into "reality" and real people can take up lodging in dreams.
In "Walpurgisnacht" Meyrink continues the thread of a world in decay, a world teetering on the brink of madness. Meyrink is even prophetic, writing in 1917, about the coming of the second world war. Here the world of dream doesn't seep into the world of reality, so much as it bursts through the walls and floods it in a flood of blood that sweeps all the characters along with it. In a sense, I think Meyrink is one of the 20th century's unacknowledged masters of Horror.
The eighteenth century saw two revolutions, the American and the French; and from these two revolutions arose two egregores whose titanic struggles paint the drama of the modern world. The child of the American Revolution is the thought-form of individual liberty, of a society of laws, and of "Law and Order" but not, as Ronald Reagan once observed, in a pejorative sense. The other child was insane from birth, and has given rise to fascism, to communism, to the killing fields of Cambodia and the planned starvation of the Ukraine. The goal of the one is the liberty of the individual, of the other the "heel of a boot in a human face... Forever", as Orwell observed. Meyrink clearly saw this titanic struggle and wrote about it in his last two works, and especially in this one.

    Length: 32 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-16-14
    Publisher: Red Door Audiobooks
    Genres: Classics, World Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
Nikolai Semyonovich Leskov (1831 1895) was a Russian novelist, short story writer, playwright, and journalist. He was a favourite of Leo Tolstoy, Anton Chekhov and Maxim Gorky among others. Leskov is praised for his innovative techniques and his ability to create a vivid picture of contemporary Russian society.
The Ghost of the Engineers' Castle is a ghost story in which his storytelling skills are displayed to perfection. Scene by scene the tension builds up until the listener's hair is standing on end. The young cadets who live in the ancient castle of the late Emperor Paul, now known as the Engineers' Castle, are afraid of the many ghosts rumoured to walk the corridors at night. They are also fearful of the nebulous "grey man" who appears at dusk and will exact terrible revenge on them. So when they are given the task of holding watch at night over the coffin of the deceased General Lamnovsky, a spiteful man who himself would have every motivation to return from the dead and avenge himself on the naughty cadets, they are very afraid. One of them does show bravado in front of his comrades... but even he is petrified at the awful apparition which then appears.

    Some Known and Unknown Tales
Max Bollinger is a talented and very sensitive actor. In his series of audio books he manages to capture the essence of the authors whose prose he reads. In this particular disc he features two writers - Nikolai Leskov whose The Ghost of the Engineers' Castle and an additional story form the Hunting Sketches of Ivan Turgenev.
In the first story of Leskov, Bollinger and his team of engineers have created background sounds that greatly heighten the ghostliness of the story - thunder, lightning, winds - all the accoutrements to make the very entertaining tale one that will remain with the listener. Bollinger's delivery style is that of a well schooled British actor who just happens to be Russian by birth, an aspect that gives these stories a flavor of reading that is musical and mesmerizing. This is a terrific set of stories for either listening to alone or with a family who continues to enjoy and appreciate an evening (away from the television!) of shared story telling. First class all the way! Grady Harp, July 11
    SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW
Whether or not this audio book is easily available on the normal market, I have just been sent it in October 2009 with a request for a review. What it contains is a short ghost story translated from the original Russian of Nikolai Leskov (1831-1895), allegedly not well known in the English-speaking world, and certainly totally unknown to me. The narration lasts about half an hour in total, divided into 11 tracks.
I am informed in the accompanying letter from the publisher that the story can be downloaded on to an iPod or an MP3 player, neither of which I own; and apparently also on to a mobile phone which I do own, although I can't really see myself performing this miracle of technology. I have played the disc on my normal DVD player, and I can report that I encountered no problems with that. Indeed I rather enjoyed the experience as a novelty. Audio books are not exactly at the leading edge of media science, but my own experience of them was previously limited to various language primer series, in which of course the audio element is supplemented by the printed material.

    Length: 33 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-12-14
    Publisher: Red Door Audiobooks
    Genres: Classics, World Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) wrote of the Russian period of depression and pessimism and is the acknowledged leader of the realistic school of the Russian short story.
He has been compared to Guy de Maupassant for the masterful way in which he creates an atmosphere and narrates his stories to a climax. No other writer has the same ability to reveal the characters' souls in just two or three pages.
Central themes in his works are mediocrity, the tragedy of pettiness, commonplaceness, the meaninglessness and emptiness of everyday life.
In The Encased Man he describes the life of a schoolmaster whose existence is limited by petty rules, morals, inhibitions and unconscious fears. Despite these traits, the man finds himself on the verge of an unforeseen marriage to a boisterous, energetic, positive woman - in short, his complete opposite. But his character traits rear their heads and destiny rushes in upon him.
