  • Popular Tales from the Norse Audiobook by George Webbe Dasent
Please open https://hotaudiobook.com ONLY on your standard browser Safari, Chrome, Microsoft or Firefox to download full audiobooks of your choice for free.
Title: Popular Tales from the Norse
    Author: George Webbe Dasent
    Narrator: Daniel Thomas May
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 13 hrs and 34 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-07-12
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 26 votes
    Genres: Classics, World Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
This is George Dasent's classic collection of Scandinavian folklore. This is not about Norse mythology per se; so if you are looking for tales of Odin, Loki, and Freya, etc., you will have to look elsewhere. Rather, this is an anthology of folk tales, similar to the Grimm Brothers', or Campbell's Popular Tales of the West Highlands. All of the usual suspects are in place, including giants, trolls, witches, evil step-siblings, magical boons and tasks, and anthropomorphic animals.
The introduction is exceptionally well written, and places various magical and other themes from the tales into the context of ancient Norse Pagan beliefs. It is a Victorian scholarly treatise, however (with the requisite rhetorical flourishes), and will mostly be appreciated by academic listeners. Once you get past the introduction however, the prose descends to the young adult level, and the delightful stories can be appreciated by listeners of all ages.
    Editorial Reviews:
Daniel Thomas May performs these Popular Tales from the Norse with his warm, slightly gravelly voice, creating amusing personalities for the varying animals, creatures, and characters that populate the tales. His engaging style will charm listeners young and old.
The stories were translated into English by Sir George Webbe Dasent, whose interest in Scandinavian mythology and literature was sparked by a meeting with Jakob Grimm who, along with his brother Wilhelm, collected German folktales into some of the most popular collections of childrens stories ever. These stories similarly reflect a cultures unique flavor while containing lessons, jokes, dreams, and fears that are universally relatable and enjoyable.

    Great tales
What made the experience of listening to Popular Tales from the Norse the most enjoyable?
There are some great tales and they are well told. There are several that have several variations of the same story and I don't think they all needed to be in the book. It made the book long and it started getting boring.
Good Stories, Some Short, Others Very Long
What other book might you compare Popular Tales from the Norse to and why?
This book reads like a compilation of Aesops Fables...some short, some long, usually with a lesson at the end.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
The reader did an adequate job of changing voices for characters...not the best I've heard, but good.
    Any additional comments?
The book is simply a compilation of tales or fables, many of them universal, not specific to Norse peoples. But it is a great introduction to Norse culture, if you've never heard it before. My son and I listened to this together. He is twelve and most of the stories were a little too young for him.
    Fun for a while
Of Norwegian ancestry so very interested in the old stories and culture. Stories were fun to hear, but many similar in theme of not story, and some reports in the story itself. I guess if you spent enough time sitting around a fire with family during long winters you would appreciate a long take to pass the time. Overall I liked heading traditional talked, but it was hard to keep interested after the first half of the book when the repetition seemed to overwhelm my interest.

  • Indian Fairy Tales Audiobook by Joseph Jacobs (editor)
Please open https://hotaudiobook.com ONLY on your standard browser Safari, Chrome, Microsoft or Firefox to download full audiobooks of your choice for free.
    Title: Indian Fairy Tales
    Author: Joseph Jacobs (editor)
    Narrator: Kevin Stillwell
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 7 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-25-12
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 33 votes
    Genres: Classics, World Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
India is often reputed to be the home of the fairy tale. Here are some of the best from the sub-continent, from the Jatakas to the folktales of Kashmir. You'll hear stories about the evil magician Punchkin, the magic fiddle, and more.
    Editorial Reviews:
Though fairy tales differ in treatment across cultures, students of international folklore begin to note many of the same themes and general plotlines, perhaps because they were all disseminated from the same source. Thus Western listeners will not find these 29 stories as "foreign" as they might originally presume them to be.
Kevin Stillwell bypasses a preface or introduction to the collection and launches his audio performance with "The Lion and the Crane". His voice is immediately mesmerizing, loaded with a knowing tone that gives it the authority to relay moral lessons. Whether Stillwell is transporting listeners to a raja's hunting grounds or a tiger's lair, his voice has the power to transcend cultural divides.
    Members Reviews:

For more Indian tales you can also check outDeccan Nursery Tales or, Fairy Tales from the SouthorHindu Tales from the Sanskrit, although they are both aimed slightly more towards an audience of children.
Delightful stories that are similar to European tales
There are twenty-nine stories in this collection. These Indian tales resemble the stories that flourished in Europe, such as the tales by the Brothers Grimm and by Aesop, although they have an Indian flavor. The collector of these stories contends that they are very old, older than the legends and folk-tales that later flourished in Europe. He believes that India was the originator of this genre and the stories were possibly brought to Europe by the crusaders or other travelers that passed through India.
For example, the tale The Lion and the Crane is well-known. A lion was eating an animal when a bone got stuck in its throat. A crane offered to help if the lion promises not to eat it. The lion agrees. The crane protects itself by placing a stick in the lion's mouth to keep it open while he is inside the lion's mouth removing the bone. As soon as the crane removes the bone, it pushes out the stick and flies off to a high tree. Later, the crane asks the lion what the lion will give it for saving the lion's life. The lion responds that it already gave the crane a gift by not eating it. The Indian version ends by speaking about the transmigration of souls, a belief of many Indians.

    Exactly what I wanted!
I was not at all let down when I received this book (in perfect condition, too). I don't have a large German vocabulary, so I'm spending my time translating the book (on the sixth page so far) which has definitely helped (though if you're planning on doing this, don't think it will help with your grammar, because it will probably just leave you more confused). I recommend this book if you're in or are stating a German 2 class. You will still need a dictionary I'm sure, but it should be an easy enough read. The story is cute too. I'm barely in the book and I'm already hooked.
    Excellent for German beginners readers.
Great book! Totally recommended for anyone who is interested on enhance his German skills. I surely will read it a few more times!!!

The book looks well made. I wish Amazon.com carried more books on different languages. I want to order more books in German and Spanish, but it seems like the only selections are for books to learn the language, but nothing for those who already read-speak the language.
    Beautiful and Inspirational
The translations are good. The Little Prince is a timeless classic with many lessons and meaning. It has something for everyone. I'm still learning German so it was good practice to re-read this in German.
    My treasure book
Always has been, and always will be, my favorite book in the whole world! Touches the heart in so many ways that I always have teary eyes throughout at least 80% of the book. DEEP! Must read!

The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
    English edition
My thoughts about "The Little Prince":
It is one of my first childhood reads and recollections. So beautiful, written for children and adults equally. It often helped me in bad times and made the good times even better. As a child I read it for weeks and weeks. Not because I haven't finished yet, but because it was so precious to me.
    An overview:
It's a bit about how we forget as adults how to use our fantasy. It's a bit about how real and beautiful our world is when we have fantasy. And how we can relearn to use our fantasy as adults by learning from young people.
"All Grown-ups were once children...But only few of them remember it." by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
    The beginning:
It begins with the narrator who remembers how he drew a boa constrictor as a child which ate an elephant before and has to digest now. He explains how he tried to show the picture adults and they would only see a hat. The end is, that people advise him to do something else with his time, something practical because he can't draw well.
    The main plot:
Now he is older and his plane crashed in the Sahara desert. There he meets a young boy,"The Little prince". "The Little Prince" is a charming young boy with a wonderful smile, blonde hair and a scarf. "The Little Prince" asks the narrator if he can draw a sheep for him and he understands the picture of the boa constrictor.
    Thoughts about this passage:
The reader finds out that the "The Little Prince" has a deeper understanding of things, that he sees things which adults can't see anymore. Something we seem to lose when we grow older and which we can only gain by being young in our mind.
"The most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or touched, they are felt with the heart." by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
    Then:
The narrator succeeds in drawing the sheep, but in another way the narrator expected. He can't seem to draw the sheep realistically enough so he draws a box and says to the "The Little Prince" that the sheep in in the box is waiting for him. He gives it to "The Little Prince" as a gift.
    And the surprise is that:
"The Little Prince" wanted the picture exactly like that and not in any other fashion. He accepts and likes the sheep, just as it is.
    Thoughts:
"The Little Prince" accepts things as they are and not only this, but he loves them as they are. He can imagine and imagination in any form is wonderful.
