Great Insights

This book offers great insights into familiar Gospel accounts and concepts. The book should be of interest to anyone (Catholic and non-Catholic alike) who wants to learn more about Jesus as he is found in the Sacred Scriptures.

It may be helpful to know that the Foreward and Introduction are somewhat academic and some listeners may find them a little dry. Once you get into the first chapter of the book, however, it becomes very interesting and easier to follow.

A View That Everybody Should See

I found this book to be read by a master. He knows his subject well and the telling of the person of Jesus is made crystal clear.

The author, using references from the old and new testaments as well as from Fathers of the Church and prominent scholars takes the reader back to the time of Jesus. The reader is at times awe-struck by the newness of the person of Jesus. Old beliefs that have been accepted with no passion now come alive. The voices ofthe prophets and saints who point to the truth of Jesus are loud and clear.

This book is not only interesting but intriguing as well. A book that I will ponder for many years. Don't miss it.

Well Done

I've read (listened) to over 100 audible books over the years and this particular one is hands down the ablsolute best. The narration is excellent and the content is incredible. Pope Benedict XVI is very approachable in his writing style. His insights are absolute gems. I've studied the scripture quite a bit however he brings a "newness" to my understanding. I am really looking forward to Audible's release of the 2nd part of this book.

To know the man.

Pope Benedict has written a book that clearly teaches the Catholic Church's beliefs about Jesus of Nazarath. He presents the churches orthodox teaching about the True God-True Man - Jesus of Nararath. He provides an historical context for this teaching, both within the larger Judio-Christian traditions, but also within the historical framework needed to understand the person of Jesus.

Furthermore, he has written in a language and style that doesn't require a PhD in Theology.

Forces Tough Questions

Let's start by saying it's a valuable listen. I tend to listen to a variety of Self Development audio. Many have wonderful messages and have an uplifting feeling to them. This one forces you to look inward and ask yourself some honest and tough questions. Some of the answers are not what you want to admit to. So at times, it was a bit uncomfortable and anxiety inducing.

But truth be told, coming to terms with your weaknesses and mistakes help you start the process of moving forward. Some chapters are more valuable than others. They will vary based on where you are. I will definitely go back and relisten to a few chapters from time to time.

The author comes across as sincere, relaxed and not 'all-knowing' but someone who has experienced a great deal. I will definitely look for more from this author.

Great Audiobook!

I have to admit that I am glad that I got the audiobook instead of the hard copy. He uses different voices in the begginning to narrate and it makes it real and come to life. It's a great book that makes you want to go to the next level in life. However if you have ever heard TD Jakes' sermons you won't get that excitement in his presentation which you hear in his sermons. (which I guess is expected because this is an aduiobook) However, his sermons are so full of life so hearing him with this monotone voice seems a little different.

Understanding

I think it would help potential listeners to understand this is a book primarily about the process or science of textual criticism and how scholars study origins of text and reach conclusions about which version might or might not be original. I found it fascinating.

New testament as the subject of textual criticism would only be relevant or interesting to someone with a Christian background or understanding, especially if you've been involved in some of the in-fighting among various sects of Christianity. If you are familiar with the debates about divine inspiration and care about other nit-picky details. You don't need 12 years of catholic school, but a basic knowledge and interest in the topic helps.

If you're not involved in the debate over one word, if you are looking for dramatic expose, or a worldwide sinister conspiracy theory, you will be disappointed. There are no shocking revelations. Its about an added sentence here or there, a single changed word, either deliberate or accidental. Its about why and how someone today would identify what words are suspect and which of various scripts might be original and how they can tell the difference. The basic story of the new testament doesn't change all that much, if at all.

I think the narrator is a must, he does an excellent job explaining new concepts of textual criticism that wouldn't be familiar to the non-scholar. There's nothing too hard to understand, but for someone not familiar with the terminology, its much easier if you have someone read it and use proper pronunciation and inflection throughout the sentences.

I think this is a book that lends itself to being read aloud that reading the text yourself.

Where does For the Children's Sake rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

As someone who loves books that inform and grow me where I need it, this book has slipped into my top 3 recommended books!

What was one of the most memorable moments of For the Children's Sake?

I feel now that I understand much more wholly what Charlotte Mason had discovered and sought to pass on to others in the position of teaching (or raising...or both) children. The lessons she has are still very much relevant today. I would say, though, that we all need to hear them now more than we ever have.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

The narration was adequate, but dull. I would have liked it to be read with a more lively tone and not so monotonous. I did, however, get used to it.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There were many, but often I was struck by the simplicity of the suggestions. I often wondered why something hadn't occurred to me naturally.

Any additional comments?

As a home educator, I was somewhat familiar with Charlotte Mason, and as I became more so through this book, I was able to assess myself as my children's educator. I saw strengths, and took courage; I saw weaknesses and took note. I think that this is a book that I will assign myself to re-hear annually for the next few years at least.

Not Bad

I'm not generally one to listen or read heaps of nonfiction books. Yet this book had been in my pile so long that our local homeschooling library called and asked if I could please return it. Whoops! I quickly downloaded a copy from Audible & spent the next few days listening to it while I walked.

The book is well written & full of great ideas regardless of the homeschool method you may be using. While it is written under the pretence that a Charlotte Mason Education is best, I think there's a little of something in there for everyone.

It was certainly an easy listen, despite being non-fiction. In fact, the only real downside was that I was out walking & not at home so I could jot down notes about what I was hearing!

A CS book unlike no other

I would not say this book is CS Lewis' best book. However, it is different than any other CS book I have read. If you are familiar with the Psalms, this book is great to listen to. Otherwise, you would have to pause the book and reference the verses and flip from chapter to chapter to follow its contents. The book is an overview of the Psalms. CS Lewis takes various themes(worship, judgment, sacrifice, joy...) and traces them throughout the 150 chapters of Psalms.

Though CS Lewis has a great mind, this book comes accross as having a devotional flavor, which is neat to hear. CS Lewis does not hit you with his intellect and logic as much as his other books, but in a candid manner. It is like sitting down with a brother in Christ over a cup of coffee and talking about God's Word.

Great Book!

I enjoyed listening to this book. The reader made me think I was listening to C S Lewis himself. The only thing I didn't like was that this is the kind of book I like to underline in and make notes to myself. So I will probably go out and buy it. I would definitely recommend this book.

as always I believe the C.S. Lewis brings a unique perspective to the texts of the Christian faith. I find this work deeply thought provoking, which is needed in the study of God's word.

Thoughtful, brilliant Lewis

Unlike most of Lewis's books, this one is explicitly aimed at Christian believers. In it, Lewis does not work psalm by psalm, but works through a set of themes, starting with some of the difficult issues in the Psalms like judgment, cursing, violence and the like. His insights are certainly worth pausing over. He works the themes as someone who is a sensitive reader, but also has a compendious knowledge of myth (Christian and otherwise) and literary form.

If you're only able to purchase one CS Lewis book/sermon, this is the one. The performance was very good and the message was great. I kept stopping to take notes. I'm definitely going to listen to this one multiple times. CS Lewis is so honest in his messages.

Easy to Identify with - Good Practical Examples

This a really good book, not only for those young in their Christian faith, but also for those who've been around and need to "re-focus". Ortberg's presentation on the spiritual disciplines was challenging, but in a way that inspires rather than discourages. He also helps the reader to set reasonable goals for prayer and meditation on scripture.

While I tend to be suspicious of most of the "positive thinking" type books, this book does a good job of addressing the perpective that God intends for us to enjoy many of the "ordinary" things in life rather than live a life of misery. But at the same time, he doesn't downplay our call to obedience and role of suffering in the Christian's life.

Overall, I thought this was a very balanced book and worth the read. It would also serve well as a devotional read on the way to work each morning.

A few of the stories were so funny I was laughing out loud in my car.

Sort of a modern

I found Celebration of Discipline a great blessing when we did it our our adult small group, and I'm always looking for more edifying content to listen to while driving, at the gym and doing chores. This book is I suppose a bit of a dumbing down compared to "Celebration", but in a lot of ways it will resonate more for people like myself who struggle to integrate our faith daily and are a long way from being able to do spiritual retreats regularly or fasting, etc.

The author shares a lot of personal examples, which are either very helpful and human or a tad narcissistic depending on one's mood and personality. For me, I found it generally helpful and after having listened to it carefully once or twice, I now listen to parts of it at least once a week so as to remind myself of what I should be working on it my life.

In short, the book is a blessing for the younger or modern person, as it challenges us to be Christ-like in real, North American day-to-day life.

Comparison of

I am a Christian who is currently going through an intense Al-Anon based program where the spiritual atmosphere is one of acceptance (i.e. all religions lead to heaven). This has been a real challenge to my faith and how I relate to others who are being forced to consider the concept of God or a Higher Power.

In this audiobook I found what I was looking for, which is a comparison of the teachings of various religions relating to their version of God. I already understand clearly what the bible communicates about God. I wanted a reader's digest version of the teachings of other religions and their gods.

I also found a bit of Mr. Zacharias's personal story which helps me accept that in talking of eastern religions, he has some level of credibility. I was surprised to hear just how many rules there are in following Buddhism.

Those who wish to answer the question of "Which God is real?" may want to consider books such as Lee Strobel's "Case for..." series or my personal favorite, "I Don't Have Enough Faith To Be An Atheist" by Norman Geisler & Frank Turek.

In choosing books of this type, the reader will come away believing only what they are willing to believe, regardless of how compelling the arguments may have been presented. I recommend this book for what it offers, a comparison rather than a compelling argument.

An interesting argument

You need to have the time to think this argument through. The centre of the book is the author's own journey, which shows his own understanding of Eastern religion. From that perspective, Ravi displays Jesus, not in terms of European Christendom but in the terms in which Jesus is presented in the original Biblical texts.

The cultural temptation is to see religion as an almost random private opinion equivalent to one's choice of music or fashion. This book argues that religion is factual, rational and open to final, decisive judgements. The argument is definitely counter-cultural... but all the more enjoyable for that.

Essential for Christan Apologists

Once again, Dr. Zacharias presents a logical argument for Christianity. As always, he does not lean on feelings or tradition to make his points, but rather depends on logic and reasoning to show the reader that there IS a firm foundation for belief in GOD. His presentation style is winsome but unyielding. This is a must read.

Great perspective

Lots of good info--will require a second reading from me to get the most from the book. I like that the author is from a different culture and religious upbringing than most christians, gives a neat insight into his and our christian beliefs.

Uh-MAZING!!

I stumbled across this gem of a book at a time in my life just before I was diagnosed with PTSD. God's timing is perfect! Christa's emotional narration helped me feel things I didn't want to feel and helped calm my racing thoughts as she concisely laid out insights that drew me closer to God and the sanctuary that He had prepared for me in my own heart where the Holy Spirit met me and bound my wounds, giving me back my health and healing my wounds. (Jeremiah 30:17) I am so grateful for how God used Christa and this book in my life. I pray that many others will also be willing to receive the gift of healing that this book imparts through encouraging increasing intimacy with God and His Word.

These are just a few words to describe this book. It is full of truth, wisdom, and practical steps to take towards letting the Lord make your heart whole. Christa teaches us to embrace our pain, listen intently to our heart, and to stay connected with Jesus rather than block him from our pain. I will heartily recommend this book to every person I know, and listen to it many more times.

Deeply Compassionate, Engaged Theology

Saint Paul has always been my favourite writer, since I first started to have favourite writers. Paul evangelized me both for literature and religion. What he writes is so eloquent, and so psychologically penetrating, it must be true in some sense. The author of the present book, Richard Rohr, talks about Paul's spirituality as one of inner transformation and growth. Between them, Paul and Jesus created the human individual as a unit of worth in mankind's evaluation of things. Rohr is gentle and passionate in the extreme, and teaches us many insights of wisdom and deep religious principles. His book is sure to give you new ways to understand your faith and the marvellous truths of theology.

Healing to my Christian upbring

Would you listen to Great Themes of Paul again? Why?

Because its a mind opener. If you were like me you were raised on fear, and narrow minded Christian views that were both judgemental and quite literally childish.What a relief to listen to this. Blew me away, made me believe not only in the man Paul but helped me understand Jesus and the Christ in a way which made sense to my thinking, feeling and processing mind. I feel like Rohr's telling of Pauls transformational story allows us all a context in which to understand our spiritual unfolding and the dilemmas we face. I have fallen in love with the Jesus story, and will never see the crucifixion in the same light again. Wow :-)
