    Title: After You Believe
    Subtitle: Why Christian Character Matters
    Author: N. T. Wright
    Narrator: Antony Ferguson
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 1 min
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-02-10

    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
From the author of the acclaimed Simply Christian and Surprised by Hope comes a book that addresses the question that has plagued humans for centuries - what is our purpose?
As Christians, what are we to do with that ambiguous time between baptism and the funeral? Its easy to become preoccupied with who gets into heaven; the real challenge is how we are going to live in the here and now. Wright dispels the common misconception that Christian living is nothing more than a checklist of do's and donts. Nor is it a prescription to follow your heart wherever it may lead. Instead, After You Believe reveals the Bibles call for a revolution - a transformation of character that takes us beyond our earthly pursuit of money, sex, and power into a virtuous state of living that allows us to reflect God and live more worshipful, fulfilling lives.
We are all spiritual seekers, intuitively knowing there is more to life than we suspect. This is a book for anyone who is hoping there is something more while were here on Earth. There is. We are being called to join the revolution, and Wright insightfully encourages readers to find new purpose and clarity by taking us on an eye-opening journey through key biblical passages that promise to radically alter the work of the church and the direction of our lives.

    True Spirituality
Definitely a challenge theologically, though in non-technical words. I thought this was deja vu: riding on my mountain bike on San Juan trail and listening to Tom Wright instead of Dallas Willard's "The Divine Conspiracy: Rediscovering Our Hidden Life In God." They both reinterpret the beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount to move from legalism to grace. They both are intellectuals, theological and devoted to correct thinking as a key to transformation. They have both transformed my life, my spirituality, my understanding of Agape. But Wright's theology is broader and more significant than Willard's. He integrates so many themes that neatly weave together: Kingdom ethics vs legalism, eschatology (study of end times) as Hope, and Love.
Wright's most profound theological explication is that we are not to become moral, but to empty ourselves as Jesus did--to live for the purpose of God's Kingdom only--not our own desires. Even Jesus had to "learn" to do this as he was fully human, and felt the temptation for self satisfaction, but continuously and "perfectly" (telos) resisted. He was not an example of moral virtue primarily (though he was), but an example of one fully yielded to God. And now we too, through his resurrection, by the Holy Spirit (holiness & prayer), can participate not only in the Kingdom to Come (telos), but now, in the Kingdom that has now Come in Jesus' life, death and resurrection. Wish this theme had predominated, because it is the basis of spiritual transformation.
Another motivation for living spiritually and not legalistically is because of the Hope we have in the renewal and transformation of this present world, where we will participate with holiness and power.

I Loved 60% of This Book
    Pros (60%):
This book's feel is reminiscient of a casual afternoon garden stroll; never hurried, gently paced & free from overly-complicated issues. For the most part, it is straight-forward in its analysis & historical context, providing background & context for its claims. 60% of the book falls into this category & it is done well. Although I would've preferred more in-depth analysis & evidence, the authors did not attempt to push the topics beyond their means.
    Cons (40%):
The authors repeatedly interject their own opinions on ways to put their analysis & conclusions into action, much like a daily devotional, when the majority of the book does not lean that way. It feels awkward & forced at times, often making me cringe & zone out until it's over. The narrator is also hit-or-miss, never truly pulling you into the narration, nor doing enough to push you away. If this was an actual book, skipping these sections would make the read much more enjoyable.
This books is full of fascinating & enlightening information concerning the ministry & meanings beyond Jesus' teachings. If you stick to these moments & focus on the positives, then the book is highly recommended. Regardless, I must recommend this book, if for no other reason than to help others grow in their faith & understanding of the Lord's Truth.
I hope this review has been helpful & the book offers some new insight for new listeners.
    Enjoy!
A pleasant surprise around several corners!
What did you like best about this story?
This story brought to light many things that a Rabbi in Jesus day would do and use to teach others the truth of God.

    Critic Reviews:
"Lifelong Catholics realize that it usually takes a convert to help us appreciate and better understand the customs and practices we too often take for granted. Scott Hahn does just that in this immensely reable yet substantive loving look at Catholic prayer, devotions, and beliefs." (Most Reverend Timothy M. Dolan, Archbishop of New York)

    Wonderful "Listening"
Scott Hahn does have an extraordinary gift for upacking complex Catholicsm teachings into understandable parts. I have read most of his books and I am pleasantly surprise to note that he does the same here with his Audiobook. He does a fine task of narrating his own book.
On the book itself, I personally believe it is a must have book for all Catholics. The chapters are short and at the end of each chapter there is a reflection quote posed with the author. There are all together 40 chapters covering a wide range of church customs and practices, from Baptism up to the sign of the Cross. Wonderful stuff that every catholic is bound to benefit from!

You will deepen your Faith and will love our customs more as they are steeped in pious religious tradition. You will also learn more about the Faith...BUY THIS BOOK!
Who was your favorite character and why?
    The Sign of the Cross!
    Great introduction to Catholism

Scott Hahns clear explications of the Faith.
What did you like best about this story?
    The discussion of the Mass.
    Which scene was your favorite?
Again the section about the Mass.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
    His discussion about Lent.
    Any additional comments?
This I would recommend to new Catholics (like me) as well as those just cerious about the Church.
    Great insight into Catholicism
    Any additional comments?
I have enjoyed many of Scott Hahn's books. This one was no exception. This book provides some great insight as to why Catholics do and believe what they do. There were a few times where I felt Hahn we t a little off topic and ventured more into "how to be a better Catholic" which I felt would be better served in another book. The title and intro to the book indicates a more factual based story.
Enlightening for any and all Catholics
This work gives the average Catholic the biblical references they need to defend their Faith. This is a MUST READ!

    Title: Respectable Sins
    Author: Jerry Bridges
    Narrator: John Haag
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 26 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-11-10
    Publisher: christianaudio.com
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 125 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
As Christians, we believe that all sins are considered equal in God's eyes. Yet while evangelicals continue to decry the Big Ones - such as abortion, adultery, and violence - we often overlook more deceptive sins. It seems we have created a sliding scale where gossip, jealousy, and selfishness comfortably exist within the church. In short, some sins have simply become acceptable.
Acclaimed author Jerry Bridges believes that just as culture has lost the concept of sin, the church faces the same danger. Throughout, Jerry encourages victory over personal sin through the gospel's transforming power. This release is perfect for listeners who long to thoughtfully examine their lives and discover a deeper walk with God.

    Exposing
What made the experience of listening to Respectable Sins the most enjoyable?
Jerry Bridges uncovers the roots of our socially acceptable sins and shows how nefarious they are. Yet he holds out the sweetness of forgiveness and the power to change through the work of Jesus Christ.
    Overall a good book
Some very good points on areas we commonly accept in the church. Even if you don't have the same convictions, the book encourages thoughtful consideration and sharpening of our relationship with God.
    An eye-opening book. Recommended!
This book helped me see those acceptable sins we just dont consider and it also helps you deal with them in light of the Gospel.
    Excellent book!
He exposed my sins while letting me know that this is why Christ came (to pay for my sin) and that I could not handle the reality of my evil were it not that I am secure in Christ. He let me know that I do not have any acceptable sins because all sins are truly evil in God's eyes and he helped me see the evil moe like God's sees evil. He helped me see that my future sins are actually (were actually) placed on Christ to bear. That is such a painful thought that I would continue to sin with my understanding that Jesus bore all my sins upon Him. Thank you Jesus for paying the debt I owe.
    Never disappointed
I have read or in this case listened to books written by Jerry Bridges. I have never been disappointed in his wisdom and insight into living a christian life. I look forward to reading more of his books.

    Release date: 11-05-09
    Publisher: christianaudio.com
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 116 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
Beginning with the story of Stephen from the book of Acts, considered the first Christian martyr, the drama builds to the passion of the early Church's persecution under the Roman Empire. The hardy and radical faith of those first believers spawned medieval missionary movements that spread the gospel across Europe and into England, Scotland, and Ireland. As the story continues, it places a significant emphasis on the sufferings of the early Protestants during the Reformation. As a vicar in the Church of England, author John Foxe strongly identified with the Protestant sects throughout Europe, and his loyalty to their cause comes through in his descriptions of many early clashes between Catholic and Protestant believers. Listeners are given an opportunity to experience the storytelling that incited several wars between Catholic and Protestant forces. The political and personal passion of the Reformation continues with the stories of the French Protestants during and after the French Revolution.

How much pain can you take?
Great book, about people who were willing to be tortured to stay in God's will. Very inspiring, I hope to meet everyone of these people after I die. Excellent naration. Recommended :)
    a primer on humility
This is a quality recording of the Book of Martyrs. It is a hard story to listen to when considering the price that these folks paid to keep faith with Christ. I need to listen again and again
    Convicting the Christian
This book has truly opened my eyes to real suffering. I'm so glad I too the time to listen to it and will most likely listen and read it again. It has truly been a life changing book for me.
The truth is not always pleasant but necessary.
This classic work of historical accounts of Christian martyrdom and sacrifices down Through the Ages is a must-read for those who wish to respect the history of their faith and acknowledge the possible atrocities capable from those influenced by evil in this world.
    Not Fun, but Important
People who claim that they are persecuted in the United States should read this. Those who die for truth should not be mixed up with those inconvenienced for opinion.
The book was a little convoluted and the stories could have been told in a more compelling way. But while it is not a fun book, it is important to remember that truth is worth suffering for.

Dante Alighieri's poetic masterpiece is a moving human drama, an unforgettable visionary journey through the infinite torment of Hell, up the arduous slopes of Purgatory, and on to the glorious realm of Paradise-the sphere of universal harmony and eternal salvation. One of the greatest works in literature, Dantes story-poem is an allegory that represents mankind as it exposes itself, by its merits or demerits, to the rewards or the punishments of justice. A single listening will reveal Dantes visual imagination and uncanny power to make the spiritual visible.

    Not For Audio
The Divine Comedy is a masterpiece of imagination. I loved picking up pieces of the story from researching it on my own and I thought listening to the entire thing would finally allow me to get to know the whole story. Sadly, this book does not really lend itself to be listened to. Unless you are a learned scholar of early Renaissance Italian society, this book will make no sense. The portrayal of the hell, purgatory, and heaven is quite vivid and well done, but the narrative is tied to the souls that Dante meets along the way. Dante uses his story to criticize the people that were living in his time I found it nearly impossible to follow the story as he meets with and discusses the sins and salvation of Italian notables from 7 centuries ago. I will still try to read this book someday, but I will find a hard copy with footnotes and keep a good encyclopedic website handy while I read it. This was written before audio recording was conceived and does not do well in this medium.
    OK
This is an OK recording of the Charles Eliot Norton translation. The problem is not so much the reading as the translation itself; it's one of those stilted, pseudo-Biblical 19th century affairs. On the other hand, it's the whole thing, not just the Inferno, in a compact inexpensive package.
    Highly dependent upon historical context
Is there anything you would change about this book?
It would be a better audio book with narrations of explanation on some of the people in a commentary similar to the audiobook series
Was The Divine Comedy worth the listening time?
I don't think this a book well suited to the audio format unless you have a specialization in Italian Renaissance history so you know more of the people whom Dante mentions. Most of the people visited by Dante on his trip through the abodes of the afterlife are not well known even to a person with a history major (though I admitted focused on more ancient history). This difficulty would be averted by reading an actual book version with notes (like an oxford edition) to give better context to the various people mentioned.
Besides this difficulty people being skimmed-over throughout the work, it provides an interesting, narrative portrayal of the Catholic Church's doctrines both popular in that time and generally continuing into the present.
    great sit down audio book
Would you listen to The Divine Comedy again? Why?
yes its a classic you really have to listen to this a couple of times to absorb it.

    The Furious Longing of Humanity
I purchased this audiobook with the sheepishness with which one might purchase a fluffy romance novel. Surely it would merely be the source of sweet, easy, idealistic remarks about God and His Love-- why was I buying this? Would I even be able to believe what the author was saying?
How wonderfully wrong I was. With apologies to Brennan Manning-- I didn't realize who you were, or what you stood for. Readers, this is a man who has both attended the opera with millionaires, and lived in a garbage dump in Mexico. He has been voluntarily incarcerated in Switzerland, and voluntarily exiled to a cave for months on end. He has served as a respected priest, and he has woken up barefoot and hung over; homeless and soaked in his own vomit.
It may be fair to say that Manning is an Everyman of sorts-- and he manages to emerge from this human-all-too-human experience, not only with his faith intact but with his heart ablaze, luxuriating in the ecstasy of his very tangeable, direct, and real experience of God's love.
I hope it makes sense when I say that this isn't trying to be a 5-star book. It doesn't philosophize, or even really explain its ideas in detail. It doesn't address every what-if that might arise. It doesn't even really say anything that hasn't been said before.
Like many liberal Christians, Manning equates loving God with loving people. Unlike many of these same writers, he doesn't stop there. I felt that he was giving us all permission to want something more-- something much much more-- something compelling to the point of being physical-- in our act of relating to God and to God's love.
I don't doubt that Manning's willingness to serve God and humanity in extreme ways is directly related to the soaring heights of rapturous joy he experiences in prayer. My own life is much more conventional in both repsects. However, I take a certain delight in knowing that a faith like Manning's is even possible-- that it exists at all, albeit not for me.
    Abba, I belong to you.
Would you listen to Furious Longing of God again? Why?
The words from this book penetrate the very lies we tell ourselves about God. We are taught to believe that God doesn't love us and holds a record of our wrongs. Brennan Manning helps to bring clarity to the topic of God's love through his own life experiences and loving words. You can feel the love of God as you listen to this book. Your heart can't help but be exposed to what it is really like knowing and accepting the fact that your are loved and longed for.
    Wow
Beautiful word-painting of the love of God for a wretch like me. Beautifully narrated. Worth a listen.

    Excellent book
As a Christian believer (albeit open minded) I found this book fascinating. It certainly has caused me to look differently and more deeply and the new testament gospels that we all tend to accept blindly. It has actually deepened (not threatened) my faith. Thank you Prof. Ehrman, I only wish I had taken your classes while at UNC.
Take a college course in New Testament in a book
I teach "Introduction to the New Testament" in a Public University in North Carolina. This is without a doubt the best introduction to the New Testament that is currently available. The book is accessible but always scholarly. I assume Ehrman has taken his notes from his New Testament class and expanded them into a book, because this is precisely the material one would get in a New Testament class at a University. Evangelicals will find the material challenging, but Ehrman (a former evangelical himself) works hard to show the evidence and answer the objections he knows are coming. I cannot say enough good about this book. Buy it, listen to it, and your understanding of the New Testament will be enhance and possible transformed.
Perfect balance of plain language and scholarship
This is the most approachable critical historical look at Jesus and the New Testament that I've yet read. This book should be mandatory reading for everyone, both believers and non-believers, who holds a strong opinion regarding Christianity. It certainly won't turn a non-believer into a believer. It's unlikely to turn a believer into a non-believer. But it is likely to make both sides take less extreme stances regarding the role of Christianity (especially those of the American Evangelical persuasion) in todays society.
    A Seminary in a Book
An incredible book that will let you see what is taught in mainline Seminaries and Divinity schools throughout the western world... much of it you'll probably never learn about in church, even though your pastor knows many of these facts... It's like a seminary in a book and will add a whole new dimension to your reading of the most significant book in the western world. It teaches a critical historic review of the New Testament rather then what most people know which is just a devotional read of the Bible. I first listened to on audible and like it so well bought a couple copies here for me and other more progressive friends.
    Ehrman = Engaging/Challenging + a Tad Pedantic
This book seems to fit in between 'Misquoting Jesus' and 'God's Problem'. I didn't find it as intellectually satisfying as 'Misquoting Jesus' and I didn't find it as doctrinally challenging as 'God's Problem'. While I appreciate Ehrman's desire to translate Biblical scholarship for the lay reader, 'Jesus, Interrupted' just seemed over-organized but also underwrought. At his best Ehrman is engaging and challenging. At his worst, Ehrman's prose jumps between pedantic and overly simplistic. His central premise on the need to read the Bible from a historical perspective and not just a doctrinal perspective already had significant purchase in me, so perhaps, I was just hoping 'Jesus, Interrupted' would wow me just a little more.

In Donald Miller's early years, he was vaguely familiar with a distant God. But when he came to know Jesus Christ, he pursued the Christian life with great zeal. Within a few years he had a successful ministry that ultimately left him feeling empty, burned out, and, once again, far away from God. In this intimate, soul-searching account, Miller describes his remarkable journey back to a culturally relevant, infinitely loving God.

    Not what you think....
This is one man's story. Maybe it's not even a story per se. It's his opinion, outlook, philosophy and journey. It's not going to read like a novel and in my opinion I think it works better this way. All in all, I really enjoyed this book, however reading instead of listening was far more rewarding on this particular book. You'll need to throw away some of your pre-conceived notions and set aside legalistic thinking...but that's the point. Recommended either way, but loved the paperback.
    Excellent
This book hits the mark for anyone looking to have a real relationship with Jesus. I highly recommend it for anyone looking to reconcile what you have been taught in the church, and the real world application of Jesus's love for mankind.
    Some Good Insights But Slow-Moving
I LOVED Miller's book A Million Miles In A Thousand Years, so I was eager to purchase this one. I was disappointed. It took me two months to get through it because I just couldn't engage. I think a major problem was the narrator. He talked slowly, and he made Miller sound pompous. A Million Miles was narrated by Miller himself, and I loved his quick, self-depricating, funny delivery. There were some good insights in this book that have stayed with me and made me think about God in a different way--but I wouldn't strongly recommend this book to a friend. I might recommend a few chapters but certainly not the entire book.
The author's voice made annoying by narration?
    Any additional comments?
I'm afraid I found the narrator's inflection irritating. It lent the text a sort of self-satisfied tone which is a bad recipe for a book about mostly focused on the author's internal reflection. I'm sure the narrator's a nice guy and all, I just don't like his reading style.

In Twelve Extraordinary Women, you'll learn more than fascinating information about these women, you'll discover - perhaps for the first time-the unmistakable chronology of God's redemptive work in history through their lives. These women were not ancillary to His plan, they were at the very heart of it.

    A must read
This book must land in your eyes if not on your book shelf. This is a great reference book about how, why and most important who is in the Bible. I would suggest this book to anyone who reads this!
    Informative
Would you listen to Twelve Extraordinary Women again? Why?
Sure, to brush up on what I learned from it again.
What other book might you compare Twelve Extraordinary Women to and why?
There are other books on women in the bible and most of them didn't really stick out to me. So I can't say its just like the others but there are quite a few books on women of the bible.
    Which scene was your favorite?
I won't say a scene since the book covers many people, but the book is great at going into each characters story and still focusing on the main woman even when other people in their lives are mentioned.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, but since it was too long I had to break it up when I had time to listen to it.
    Any additional comments?
I loved how descriptive this book was. You will get a full understanding of these women's stories in a very in depth look on their lives and the people around them.
    Great small group study
Great small group study for both genders! Very thorough and insightful!!! Thank you very much!
    MacArthur Pleases Again!
Would you consider the audio edition of Twelve Extraordinary Women to be better than the print version?
I think both the audio book and the print are equally good, it depends whether you're a reader or prefer to listen. I listen to audio books at night when I go to bed, but, it's definitely worth a read!
What did you like best about this story?
I really enjoyed the depth that MacArthur went into about the women of the Bible. When I read the Bible, I normally don't sit and meditate on each passage as well as I should. After listening to this book, I was shocked at how much I didn't know these women as much as I should. It took the depth and scope that MacArthur wrote about to "awaken" me to these sisters in the Lord.
Which character as performed by Tamara Adams was your favorite?
I really found that after a good study of these women, I loved them all and was enlightened to wonderful nuggets of great information that I had either forgotten about when I read the Bible or that MacArthur knew from other writings.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    Ladies of the Light
    Any additional comments?
I would also suggest MacArthur's "Twelve Ordinary Men" It's a great compliment to this one as Dr. MacArthur writes a similar book, but obviously about men of the Bible. It's just as good :)
sound doctrine, expository teaching - educational
I wish I did the study long ago. I bought my husband twelve extraordinary men. We are now working through the PARABLES study together.
