    Publisher's Summary:
John Charles Ryles best known works have been reissued and widely read over many years. The fine qualities of his writings have ensured that his books are still popular and useful. This volume has become a classic work and is known and loved by many throughout the world.
In days when evangelical preachers are accused of being either superficial or dull, we have here a great example of one who was neither of these things. As Bishop Ryle explains and applies his texts with his customary simplicity and directness, the listener will find his conscience pricked and his soul examined. Ryle addresses hard and trying subjects that most modern evangelicals have chosen to ignore: the power and depth of indwelling sin, the necessity of a holy life, the struggle and fight of faith, counting the cost of following Christ - and thats only in the first five chapters.RylesHolinesshas become essential reading on this most important subject, and the first chapter, Sin,has rarely been bettered.
    J. C. Ryle (1816-1900) was appointed as the first bishop of Liverpool in 1880 and was the leader of the Evangelical Party in the Church of England for more than half a century. He is highly regarded for his plain and lively writings on practical and spiritual themes; their usefulness and impact have been consistently recognized and remain as wise and relevant today as when he first wrote them.

    Heavenly Inspiration.
Book was a recommendation by my Pastor and I was not disappointed. This was considered by many to be Ryle's opus and I don't discount that. His insightfullness and inspired writing will stand the test of time owing to the fact this was written in the late 1870's and is needed now more than ever.
Loved Cosham's reading of "The Screwtape Letters" which made this book even more enjoyable.
If you are a believer then "Holiness" will benefit you immensely.
If you are not a believer then "Holiness" can show you the importance of being saved. As Jesus Christ said, "It is not those who are well who need a physician, but those who are sick." Take heart and believe in Him.
    Blown Away
Probably the best book I've ever encountered outside of Holy Scripture. I will definitely continue to revisit this book.
    "One of the Good Ones"
Now and then you stumble across a book and early into the first few chapters say to yourself, "Yes, this is one of the good ones. This is one that won't leave me soon." "Holiness" by J. C. Ryle is one of those books for me. Few things point us to Christ like deep, sound, biblical doctrine. Doctrine that glorifies and honors our King, Christ Jesus. For even a glimpse at some of those things, I highly recommend this book. The narrator was incredible as well. Before it was over I felt as though this might be how Ryle himself spoke. Great book all around.
    Immensely blessed
What a marvelous work the Lord, by His Spirit, has brought forth through JC Ryle. His sermons have blessed many for generations. Sobering and edifying, as always. I truly enjoyed the narration. The perfect voice to convey this work.
    Christ is All
This book is timeless and deserves five stars because of how saturated it is with Christ. The author points to him over and over and over and over in nuanced, surprising, and beautiful ways. Ryles' deep affection and trust in Jesus is evident on every page.

    Publisher's Summary:
Many pastors struggle to translate their theological beliefs into fruitful ministry in the places they are called to reach. Its not enough to simply know what to believe (theology), or on the other hand, how to do ministry (methodology) - they need something in between. They need help thinking about ministry in a culture that no longer believes Christianity is a force for good, let alone the source of ultimate revealed truth in the person of Christ.
This unabridged audiobook, a collection of 12 essays by Timothy Keller, outlines a theological vision for ministry that is organized around three core commitments:
Written by a practitioner for practitioners, Center Church will provoke serious reflection, creative adaptation, and decisive action. It can be used by groups or individually and includes questions for discussion and reflection.

Wisdom for Urban Churches - Deep, Wide & Practical
    Any additional comments?
I am a pastor in New York City and an admirer of Tim Keller's preaching and writing, though I've only attended Redeemer Presbyterian Church a couple of times. This lengthy book reads as a carefully assembled notebook of the accumulated wisdom of Keller (and his team) in building one of the most thriving and paradigmatic churches in New York City today. It shows clearly the depth and clarity of thought and the faith put into practice that is embodied in Keller's work. It rightly rejects the idea that others can simply take over the Redeemer model and replicate it. Rather, Keller leads the reader to think substantively about the many elements that are part of the life of an urban church with a strong center in the Gospel. It ranges widely from the content of preaching and theology, to issues of interaction with secular culture, to diversity in worship styles, and many other topics.
While I think that the book will be most relevant to those who are directly involved in ministry, it will also provide a thoughtful journey through urban church life to anyone who reads it.
Tom Parks does an excellent job reading the book. I highly recommend it.
Fantastic though I read this kind of book next tim
Loved every minute of what I was learning and how I was being moved, but it was a lot to take in just listening. Its definitely something I would rather read.
    Doctrinally sound and practically insightful
This book has the ability to help the person who is doctrinally sound but unable to develop a practically helpful ministry, while at the same time help the person who is a practical genius but lacking in sound doctrinal roots in ministry.
If you are looking to develop your mission, vision, and strategy for church ministry, then look no further, this is the book you need to read. If you are looking to better apply your vision in practical on the ground ways in discipleship curriculums, community groups, etc. then look no further, this is the book for you.
MUST-READ FOR EVERY PASTOR AND PASTOR-TO-BE
What did you love best about Center Church?
    1. Center Church draws us back to what is essential - the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
    2. Center Church is practical yet far from giving us a specific method.
    3. Center Church speaks to all the different expressions of Evangelicalism and calls for important corrections in all camps.

Length: 7 hrs and 23 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-01-12
    Publisher: Oasis Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 147 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
Interruptions: They're aggravating - sometimes infuriating. They make us want to tell people what we think of them. But how we handle interruptions actually tell us more about ourselves. The prophet Jonah's existence was interrupted by a call of God that would require a complete change of life. And it scared him enough to make him run in the opposite direction. Yet, what seemed to him to be an unnecessary and useless interruption was really an opportunity for Jonah to be involved in something the likes of which the Old Testament world had never seen before. This interruption was really a divine intervention and it held more adventure and possibility than he could have ever imagined.
We, like Jonah, tend to run from interruptions. When major pains and minor problems cause a hiccup in our carefully calculated plans and goals we head in the opposite direction. Who knows what we might be missing by running from what could very well be Gods means of steering us towards the most magnificent outcome of our lives. Jonah could tell us a story or two. So could you. And so does popular conference speaker and author Priscilla Shirer in this very personal account of opportunities lost and lessons learned - and the amazing freedom and fulfillment that comes from going with God even when He's going against your grain.

    poor narration.
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
i just couldn't get through listening because of the narration. The content of the book was fantastic. I am planning to buy it to read myself. I will sell back this audiobook - sorry to say it is not one to listen to.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
the narrator totally detracted from the content.
    Needs Priscilla's Narration
    Any additional comments?
I hope Priscilla Shirer will re-record this wonderful book in her own voice. She does a beautiful job on her other book, The Resolution for Women--far better than the narration on this book.
    Disappointed not read by author
Initially, I was surprised not to hear the author narrating this book. That would have and still is my preference. It has taken awhile to acclimate to a different narrator and thus, has slowed down listening to the book. I hope that this will be re-recorded with the author's voice. Hearing the intonations, affirmations and just the encouraging, emphatic voice of Priscilla Shirer is encouraging and uplifting and promotes a greater impact on enjoying the book and pondering/aborbing the content. This narrator is okay, but since Priscilla Shirer is a speaker, fans/followers of her have heard her voice. And, once one has heard her reassuring, commanding, yet gentle voice, there is absolutely no comparison or acceptable substitute. Of course, the content of the book is excellent. Listening via Audible is very convenient, but I implore Audible to please change the narrator. It makes a difference.
    Life-changer
It's taken me September til now to progress through the book. Great read though! Check it out!
powerful read related to Jonah that blesses
this is a well written book that takes Jonas experience and allows the believer to related to their life. There are so many application points and opportunities for powerful moments of reflection.

    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
Too few people attending church today, even those in evangelical churches, are exposed to the gospel explicitly. Sure, many will hear about Jesus, and about being good and avoiding bad, but the gospel message simply isn't there--at least not in its specificity and its fullness. Inspired by the needs of both the overchurched and the unchurched, and bolstered by the common neglect of the explicit gospel within Christianity, Matt Chandler has written this punchy treatise. He begins with the specifics of the gospel--outlining what it is and what it is not--and then switches gears to focus on the fullness of the gospel and its massive implications on both personal and cosmic levels. Recognizing our tendency to fixate on either the micro or macro aspects of the gospel, Chandler also warns us of the dangers on either side--of becoming overly individualistic or syncretistic. Here is a call to true Christianity, to know the gospel explicitly, and to unite the church on the amazing grounds of the good news of Jesus!

    Fantastic !
Would you consider the audio edition of The Explicit Gospel to be better than the print version?
Yes because it helped me retain the information better
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Explicit Gospel?
The last three chapters on the dangers of the gospel on the ground or in the air too long
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
What you probably know but need to hear over and over again
    Awesome!
Well done! Thoughtfully written. Definitely worth listening to. It is the "explicit" gospel for a reason.
    Tell It Like It Is
Explicit Gospel is just what the book is named. Share it. Believe it. Live it. It explains the differences of the law, being moral and understanding what grace really means. It either gets you on the right track or confirms your walk.
    Absolutely Amazing!
Encouraging and convicting. A jewel to be used in discipleship and personal devotion. The gospel alone saves, sanctifies, and secures.
A great refocus on a life lived for checklists
I have recently begun a spiritual reformation of my life. I have been a Christian most of my life, and I think many of the gospel truths I have known. But I greatly appreciate the way that Matt Chandler lays out the explicit gospel in an easy to understand and passionate format.
More than once I found myself listening to a concept in the book, and then I would ask myself what does he mean by that?
Almost every single time the next sentence Matt would say was the clarification I was seeking with my question.
I am going to relisten to this book again immediately, after I spent some time in prayer and scriptures. The only thing this book may lack is in an audio format you don't always get scripture references, but I'm not sure if the print edition has them either such as footnotes.
For someone who desires a scripturally based return to the first love of the gospel, I can't recommend this book more.

    Title: Bad Religion
Subtitle: How We Became a Nation of Heretics

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 13 hrs and 16 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-17-12
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 213 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
As the youngest-ever op-ed columnist for the New York Times and the author of the critically acclaimed books Privilege and Grand New Party, Ross Douthat has emerged as one of the most provocative and influential voices of his generation. Now he offers a masterful and hard-hitting account of how American Christianity has gone off the rails - and why it threatens to take American society with it.
In a story that moves from the 1950s to the age of Obama, Douthat brilliantly charts traditional Christianity's decline from a vigorous, mainstream, and bipartisan faith - which acted as a "vital center" and the moral force behind the Civil Rights movement - through the culture wars of the 1960s and 1970s and down to the polarizing debates of the present day. He argues that Christianity's place in American life has increasingly been taken over, not by atheism, but by heresy: debased versions of Christian faith that breed hubris, greed, and self-absorption.
Ranging from Glenn Beck to Eat Pray Love, Joel Osteen to The Da Vinci Code, Oprah Winfrey to Sarah Palin, Douthat explores how the prosperity gospel's mantra of "pray and grow rich", a cult of self-esteem that reduces God to a life coach, and the warring political religions of left and right have crippled the country's ability to confront our most pressing challenges and accelerated American decline. His urgent call for a revival of traditional Christianity is sure to generate controversy, and it will be vital listening for all those concerned about the imperiled American future.
    Members Reviews:
    Broad Stroke Analysis
In Bad Religion: How We Became a Nation of Heretics, Ross Gregory Douthat provocatively addresses the drift of Christian faith experienced in the US during the recent past. He links this drift to the current economic, policy, and political malaise effecting the populace. The slow-motion decline of traditional faith and the rise of pseudo-Christian thinking is described and analyzed. One could argue details of Douthats arguments, but overall he makes a rather disturbing case for what has transpired. The thought provoking book is generally depressing. The tenor turns upbeat (or perhaps I should say hopeful) in the final sections where he proposes how Christian faith may be turned back to its roots. For my tastes, Douthat reveals his political biases in a number of places. However, Christians of all stripes would do well to at least give Douthat a hearing. The reading of Lloyd James is excellent.
    Bad Religion Is Bad Ass
Fascinating narrative of the shift from (relatively) robust mid-century/post-war American religious institutions (morally authoritative and politically above the fray) to our current, institutionally-weakened religious climate (pervaded by heresies such as Osteen-ish prosperity preaching, Oprah-esque god within thought, or Beck-like nationalism) and enlightening connection of our religio-social climate with its different forms' various historical roots.

Written by John Owen, one of the best known of the Puritans. In The Mortification of Sin, John Owen insisted on the importance of the Christian dealing effectively with their sinful tendencies and attitudes. He believed that God, through his Word and Spirit, had provided the guidelines and the power for this to be achieved. Owen effectively dismisses various excuses for not engaging in self scrutiny and yet avoids the current trend of self absorption. In so doing he provides principles to help believers live lives of holiness. As with all of Owen's writings, continues to be widely read and greatly appreciated to this day.

Fantastic book for any true believer in the God of the bible and His Christ.
It truly points to the heart of the evil that all endure and must live with and speaks to the heart the way and means to control the evil that lies within us all even the saved. It will certainly remind you what you "must" do each and everyday to deal with the pain of sin in ones life John Owen does not mix words and it's as though he's speaking directly to you the individual listening to this one of a kind.
I MOST HIGHLY recommend it, even to those who think they've got a handle on their sinfulness.
    Immensely Helpful
This book is a masterpiece on the topic of the putting to death of sin in the Christian life. I would recommend it to every Christian who can deal with a little older English. If not, there's a modernized version in print. This audiobook is excellently read and not overly long or short. I've listened through 3 times now and will likely do so again. Seriously, buy it Christian!
    Powerful

    Title: Simply Jesus
Subtitle: A New Vision of Who He Was, What He Did, and Why He Matters

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 33 mins

    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 333 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
We have grown used to the battles over Jesus - whether he was human or divine, whether he could do miracles or just inspire them, whether he even existed. Much of the church defends tradition, while critics take shots at the institution and its beliefs. But what if these debates have masked the real story of Jesus? What if even Jesuss defenders have been so blinded by their focus on defending the churchs traditions that they have failed to grapple with what the New Testament really teaches?
Bible scholar, Anglican bishop, and bestselling author N. T. Wright summarizes a lifetime of study of Jesus and the New Testament in order to present for a general audience who Jesus was and is. In Simply Jesus, we are invited to hear one of our leading scholars introduce the story of the carpenters son from Nazareth as if we were hearing it for the first time.
Jesus - the Jesus we might discover if we really looked, explains Wright, is larger, more disturbing, more urgent than we had ever imagined. We have successfully managed to hide behind other questions and to avoid the huge, world-shaking challenge of Jesuss central claim and achievement. It is we, the churches, who have been the real reductionists. We have reduced the kingdom of God to private piety; the victory of the cross to comfort for the conscience; Easter itself to a happy, escapist ending after a sad, dark tale. Piety, conscience, and ultimate happiness are important, but not nearly as important as Jesus himself. As the church faces the many challenges of the twenty-first century, Wright has presented a vision of Jesus that more than meets them.
    Members Reviews:
A must read for today's church
Mix together a fair amount of history, a little bit of culture and an ample amount of theology and you have the recipe for "Simply Jesus". Historically it helps us see Jesus' place in a line of Messiahs, some coming before him and some after him(the last one as late as 100 years after Jesus' death). Culturally, we get a picture of the expectations surrounding Jesus, the excitement of a Messiah coming onto the scene and what one would look for if a Messiah was "outing" himself. But most important, theologically, this book is a discussion of how the church has done Jesus a real disservice by confining him to our church methods, programs, or making him our own "personal" saviour. I've listened to this book twice and probably will again.
    Wonderful Overview!
What did you love best about Simply Jesus?
I have read many of NT Wrights books but I think that this one is the best that I have ever read. It was easy to follow and helped me gain a good framework for understanding Jesus.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Simply Jesus?
Learning about the other types of Messiah movements helped me understand Jesus' own moverment. I love it!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It deeply gratified me and made me think.
    Any additional comments?
I would recommend this book to long time Christians and to seekers alike.
Very good distillatio of Wright's overall theology
I have a hard time being objective about Wright's work. I really find it fascinating. In part because he is hitting in areas that I really am looking for.

    Personally Life Changing
Father Martin's meditation on Thomas Merton helped me understand what Merton meant by the false self. It is the self we develop to hide our true self from friends, family and co-workers. It is the social self that attempts to appear hip, slick and cool when none of those things are true. The false self is a road block to finding who you truly are.
    thought provoking
Although it was read a little slowly, I thought, the wisdow in this book is powerful. I was touched.
Not bad, it's worth listening to...
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Becoming aware of your "true" and "false" is productive to your spiritual life.
The book was more on Fr. Martins life than it was Thomas Merton.
If youve listened to books by James Martin before, how does this one compare?
    About the same.
    Great Reading and Listening.
What made the experience of listening to Becoming Who You Are the most enjoyable?
This is an UNabridged version of this excellent, narrated by the Author, Fr. James Martin sj. Fr. Jim is the Curtural Editor of America magazine and I read his work regularly. His writing is nothing short of brilliant. So, I had very high expectations when I purchased this piece. I can honestly say that the audio book exceeded my expectations.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Becoming Who You Are?
The expert interpretation or translation of Thomas Merton's writing and thinking. Fr. Martin provides is very enlightening even to an older person like me. I am a 73 year old retiree.
Have you listened to any of James Martins other performances before? How does this one compare?
No other experience. But, if I discover any, I will acquire them immediately.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I intend to listen (and simultaneously read) a second time and in one sitting.
    Any additional comments?
Intend to purchase all of Merton's work available in audiobooks.
    , becoming who you are
The entire book is worth reading,,, but the last chapter is one of the most moving reads I have ever encountered . It is also one of the most practical applications of the writings of scholars and non-scholars I have ever read in my 72 years.

well narrated audio of a masterpiece.
As I am aware, there are 3 choices of narration for this great book.1-Dale Alquest at the chesterton society,2-the other narrator here at audible and 3-this new one with john robbins.Dale Alquests reading is very good but a british accent realy is a plus for a british chesterton. The other audible narator is WAY to fast.So this one realy is the best. The sample clip may seem like he has a lisp, which he does a little but he reads very well and at a slow and proper pace with great expression.{note the diference of book time between the two}.Overall ,this is a masterpiece.
Amazingly fresh thinking, in a very old book
Would you consider the audio edition of The Everlasting Man to be better than the print version?
I have not read the printed version, but I did enjoy very much the 'feel' added by the reader. His voice had a rustic feel that added to the ambiance of the book.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
C.S. Lewis used the right phrase, in that the book 'baptises' your intellect. The book has an amazing effect of drawing you out into a different way of thinking, that frankly I found refreshing or more real.
    Any additional comments?
If you enjoy Lewis, you will probably enjoy this book. If you enjoy philosophically thinking about man's view of history, you will probably enjoy the book. I love both, and I enjoyed it a lot.
    Incredible.
I have to say, as someone who lives for fiction novels, this book by G.K. Chesterton was water to my philosophical soul. I don't think I've ever enjoyed a non-fiction book so much. Chesterton has such a brilliant mind, I had to sometimes rewind certain parts just to listen again. Honestly, he should be required reading for any philosophy student, or any Christian for that matter. It's such a difficult book to explain, but I loved it. I have purchased but have yet to listen to Orthodoxy and Heretics, though I've been told this one, The Everlasting Man, is his best. I have a book of his complete essays as well, which are absolutely hilarious, as well as poignant. I hope that those will be narrated soon as well.
I highly recommend this book to any Christian, and any open-minded non-christian who likes things plainly spoken in a brilliant use of language. Better than C.S. Lewis in my opinion.
    Great Book, incredibly knowledgable author
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Highly recommended. A joy to listen to his analysis of evolution and philosophy on life.
    The folly of our world
This book is very pertinent to our current state in the world were very dismal world views are asserting themselves by appealing to a stale secularism, shrouded in scientism, that means to separate men from his God given reason and freedom to explore reality.

    Publisher's Summary:
What did the writer of Genesis mean by "the first day"? Is it a literal week or a series of time periods? If I believe that the earth is 4.5 billion years old, am I denying the authority of Scripture?
In response to the continuing controversy over the interpretation of the creation narrative in Genesis, John Lennox proposes a succinct method of reading and interpreting the first chapters of Genesis without discounting either science or Scripture. With examples from history, a brief but thorough exploration of the major interpretations, and a look into the particular significance of the creation of human beings, Lennox suggests that Christians can heed modern scientific knowledge while staying faithful to the biblical narrative. He moves beyond a simple response to the controversy, insisting that Genesis teaches us far more about the God of Jesus Christ and about God's intention for creation than it does about the age of the earth.
With this book, Lennox offers a careful yet accessible introduction to a scientifically savvy, theologically astute, and Scripturally faithful interpretation of Genesis.

Extremely Informative, Narrator Hard to Listen To
Would you listen to Seven Days That Divide the World again? Why?
Love this book. John Lennox is very informative and I appreciate his insights and overview of the issue. It's making me think through what I've believed and how to critically analyze scientific discovery in conjunction with Biblical revelation.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Patrick Lawlor?
Frank Muller. I had to turn this book off the first time I tried to listen as I found Patrick Lawlor so difficult to listen to. It was so off-putting that I couldn't proceed. After awhile, my fascination with hearing the content superseded my frustration with the narrator's voice, and I am enjoying the content immensely. However, I do not care for his style of narrating.
Religion and Science Compliment One Another
John C.Lennox has done something quite profound here. He has shown that there is no need for religion and science to be in conflict. He will no doubt have detractors on both sides of the divide, but that is as it should be.
