    Title: Miracles
Subtitle: What They Are, Why They Happen, and How They Can Change Your Life

    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
The definitive book on miracles from the New York Times best-selling author of Bonhoeffer, Eric Metaxas.
What are miracles, and why do we believe in them? Is it for comfort, to explain the inexplicable, or do we simply long for a connection with something larger than ourselves? And why do some people dismiss them out of hand, as if they can never happen?
What Heaven is for Real did for near-death experiences, Miracles does for the miraculous - provides undeniably compelling evidence that there's something real to be reckoned with, whatever one has thought of this topic before. It provides a wide range of real stories of the miraculous and will engage the listener in the serious discussion that this fascinating and rich subject deserves.
Miracles is in some ways a more personal, anecdotal, and updated version of C. S. Lewis's 1947 book on the subject. Metaxas's Miracles is an exploration and an exhortation to view miracles as not only possible, but as far more widespread than most of us had ever imagined.
Eric Metaxas says it is not a question of whether miracles happen - the evidence that they do is overwhelming in this audiobook alone - but rather, what exactly are miracles, why do they happen, and how can we to understand them in our own lives?

    Great book
Surprisingly, my favorite part of the book was early on: all the details of the way our earth came to be. I am now overwhelmed by the day and night sky and realize what a miracle of incomparable, innumerable aligned details this life-sustaining planet is. There are a greater number of miracle stories than I anticipated would be in this book. I was quite pleased with the extent of coverage. I think Eric Metaxas shared aspects of the Gospel in new ways that may help bring a non-believer to Christ. I thought the reader did a very nice job of bringing the author's personality to the work, though he missed the nuances of a line or two of three that should have had some ironic or comedic effect. I also think the marriage story went on WAY too long. I felt like the reader was even bored with it and wished the couple would divorce already. I wonder if the story in hard copy book would feel so drawn out. But overall, this is one of my all-time favorite books.
    Riveting!
Thank you si very much. Heard review on Hugh Hewitt Show. Better than expected.
    Miracles
Loved this book, great miraculous stories! But I didn't like how it portrayed being Catholics as basically a bad thing. Catholicism is very deep rooted and a great religion if you are willing to take the time and effort that it takes to be Catholic. The author has clearly never taken the time to understand the Catholic faith. Almost everyone who isn't Catholic thinks that Catholics don't know the bible because some cannot quote it verse for verse, that is not the point of the bible though, the bible is meant to be a tool to grow in faith and create a relationship with God. Practicing Catholics know the bible very well and use it as a tool to allow God to grow within us and be portrayed through us.

  • Vanishing Grace Audiobook by Philip Yancey

    Title: Vanishing Grace
Subtitle: What Ever Happened to the Good News?
    Author: Philip Yancey
    Narrator: Henry O. Arnold
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 58 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-27-14
    Publisher: Zondervan
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 114 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
Why does the church stir up such negative feelings? Philip Yancey has been asking this all his life as a journalist. His perennial question is more relevant now than ever: in a 20-year span starting in the mid-90s, research shows that favorable opinions of Christianity have plummeted drastically - and opinions of Evangelicals have taken even deeper dives. The end of the politics-oriented Evangelicalism that was so dominant in the second half of the 20th century is a strong example that we are living in a post-Christian culture. Yet while the opinions about Christianity are dropping, interest in spirituality is rising. Why the disconnect? Why are so many asking, Whats so good about the Good News?
Yanceys writing has focused on the search for honest faith that makes a difference for a world in pain. In his landmark book Whats So Amazing About Grace, he issued a call for Christians to be as grace-filled in their behavior as they are in declaring their beliefs. But people inside and outside the church are still thirsty for grace. What the church lacked in its heyday is now exactly what it needs to recover to thrive. Grace can bring together Christianity and our post-Christian culture, inviting outsiders as well as insiders to take a deep second look at why our faith matters and about what could reignite its appeal to future generations. How can Christians offer grace in a way that is compelling to a jaded society? And how can they make a difference in a world that cries out in need? Yancey aims this audiobook at Christian listeners, showing them how Christians have lost respect, influence, and reputation in a newly post-Christian culture. Why do they hate us so much? mystified Americans ask about the rest of the world. A similar question applies to evangelicals in America. Yancey explores what may have contributed to hostility toward Evangelicals.
    Members Reviews:
    Loved 3/4 of the book
There are four parts to this book and even in the introduction Yancey says that this is essentially four different books. I just wish he had tried to do less.
The first part is all about the vanishing of grace from the message of the church. This part is five stars and I would like virtually all Christians to read it. He calls on Christians to not only recover grace as the central message of Christ and the church, but also to remember that the method of the message has to be in love. I really dont think that basic message can be emphasized too much in Christianity because the natural temptation of Christians is to change the message of the gospel to one that is about earning our salvation through moralism or tradition. After all, a gospel of moralism or tradition is easy for Christians who tend to be already familiar with tradition and fairly good at presenting a moral facade to the world around them. But that changing of the gospel away from grace fundamentally changes the message of the gospel.
Part two of the book is also good. Because we are in a post-Christian world, there are some people that can speak to the world more effectively than others. Yancey talks about the effectiveness of Pilgrims, Activists and Artists to communicate the mystery and beauty of Christianity. Traditional apologetics or door to door witnessing, while occasionally still effective, are less effective when there is not a shared cultural language.

Here is a book written with great respect for the complexity of the issue, recognizing that some who read it will be in the trenches of deep suffering themselves and others questioning the very existence of a loving God. Why Suffering? provides an answer to the problem of pain and suffering with emotional sensitivity and intellectual integrity.

Best time spent / benefit ratio book of my life
This book eclipses Frankel' Man's Search for Meaning as the most beneficial book to my life per time spent reading/listening. I was afraid this book might be boring, but I couldn't wait to finish it. Both author/narrators are wonderful at both tasks. I listened at 1.5 speed and could've bumped that to 2, but didn't actually want to be done because it was so good.
Suffering is a very difficult topic for any world view to explain, and I have spent a lot of time reading and listening to books about it. Why Suffering handles the topic masterfully. It fairly presents the case from major world religions and philosophies and compares their answers to that of Christianity. If nothing else--and it is much more--Why Suffering is an excellent survey of the topic. I wish all my non-fiction books managed to be so deep and yet so brief. You will be smarter and possibly wiser for listening to Why Suffering.
    Heard Twice & Will Again
Amazing insight and wisdom. I follow Ravi Zachariah International Ministry and encourage others to do the same.
Good Scriptural Study About The Nature of Suffering
I did quite enjoy this book read by both authors. I am a little more partial to Zaharias over Vitale being the reason for 4 stars as opposed to 5. My last book I listened to was The Grand Weaver by Ravi Zacharias which dealt with a very similar subject and I think I liked it a little more. If I had listened to this book first I would have probably given it 5 stars. Either way it is a very insightful look at pain from a apologetic view. I will probably listen to this again within a year or so and not right after another of Ravi's books
    Excellent perspective.
I think this book can articulate well to the individuals who are skeptical about why God would allow evil in the world. This is an especially good read for those who have trouble coming to terms with the great tragedies as well as the difficulties faced in everyday life.
    Great book, recommendation for sure.
I'm biased. I have been a Razi Zacharias fan for a while. He has an incredible way of fully explaining why he thinks and believes the way he does. Vince Vitale as well has spent a lot of time thinking through his beliefs to best explain how to articulate any given question.
Suffering is a hard subject that has and will affect us all. However, knowing the underlying premise of the question helps with understanding why the question is valid or not.
I hope this book finds someone right in the midst of their suffering to add some comfort and some understanding of why Christianity answers the question with the best explanation.

  • The Lost World of Genesis One Audiobook by John H. Walton

Title: The Lost World of Genesis One
Subtitle: Ancient Cosmology and the Origins Debate
    Author: John H. Walton
    Narrator: Steve Coulter
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 35 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-17-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 281 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
In this astute mix of cultural critique and biblical studies, John H. Walton presents and defends 20 propositions supporting a literary and theological understanding of Genesis 1 within the context of the ancient Near Eastern world and unpacks its implications for our modern scientific understanding of origins. Ideal for students, professors, pastors and lay readers with an interest in the intelligent design controversy and creation-evolution debates, Walton's thoughtful analysis unpacks seldom appreciated aspects of the biblical text and sets Bible-believing scientists free to investigate the question of origins.
    Members Reviews:
The world is functionally God's temple
Prof. John H Walton of Weaton College writes a book on how a Christian should approach Genesis 1 in the light of current knowledge scholars have in how the text was intended to be read by the human writer of the text, without jeapardising the divine claim to the authorship of the Bible. In 16 propositions he shows how Genesis 1 can be reconciled with natural evolution without scientists or theologians overstepping their boundaries when arguing the origins of the universe. Fro Walton religious and scientific claims cannot be exclusive of one another, but may complement each other. He helps American Christians to deal with the creation/evolution debate in the United States of America.
I thought it was a well-structured and carefully crafted argument that Walton proposed. While this can be seen as the book's strong point it can also be seen as its weakness. I would have expected that the Ancient Near Eastern context and stories that shaped the minds of ancient Israelites would have been related to quench curiosity. Yet, it seems that this book is void of details and continuously build on argument show that Genesis 1 only speaks of God's functional creation. Nothing was mentioned of two creation narratives, Genesis 1 and 2. Not touching these controversies kept the book very safe and even threatened to make it dull.
Yet Walton has the ability to balance on a very fine line to convince people to his reading of Genesis 1. As someone who reads Hebrew I was not always convinced in his approach to words. If "tohu wa-bohu" ("empty and void") is found trice in combination for instance and "bohu" doesn't appear alone, should one look at the meaning of the other word only in the contexts where the combination are used? Couldn't it be a technical term that is understood in a very specific way when te two words are in combination?
Be this as it may, I think Prof. Walton's book must be commended for taking on a taboo subject and using the ancient mindset to populate the understanding of the text. This book is recommended to Christians who wants to take the mindset of ancient Israel to heart and understand the Bible text in the most responsible way.
A Really Literal Read of the Text
"What is the author saying" and "what would the audience have understood" are the most important questions to ask of Genesis 1. God created. Sure, but what does that mean? I think this author should start the book off quoting another knowledgeable expert "You keep using that word.

Rick Renner's book Dressed To Kill is considered by many to be a true classic on the subject of scriptural warfare.

In the process, he describes the significance of our spiritual armor not only to withstand the onslaughts of the enemy and but also to overturn the tendencies of the carnal mind. Furthermore, Rick delivers a clear, scriptural presentation on the biblical definition of spiritual warfare - what it is and what it is not. When you walk with God in deliberate, continual fellowship, He will enrobe you with Himself.

    Excellent life changing book-horrible narrator
What did you love best about Never Go Back?
Life changing material. Many AHA moments.
What didnt you like about Michael Prichards performance?
He didn't read the book smoothly. Each word was read one by one rather than as reading a story. There was no intonation....monotonous. It was so bad that I almost returned the book, but the material was so good that I stuck it out. I would love to listen again, as I do with some books with such helpful information, but I cannot bring myself to tolerate the narrator again.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. I drive about 500 miles each week so I listen while I am driving.
    Any additional comments?
This is such an awesome book with wonderful, life changing material, but PLEASE, PLEASE get a different narrator. I believe this book will lose people it needs to reach only because of the narrator.
    Good book, wrong narrarator
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Michael Prichard?
Dr. Henry Cloud, the author of course. My brain just couldn't make the connection to the voice of Michael Prichard even though he is an excellent narrator. Dr. Henry Cloud has a familiar voice in the way of a beloved uncle who tells interesting stories. The book could have been excellent but the cadence from a disciplined voice could not carry the heartbeat of the subject matter.
    Great Content!!!/Terrible Narration
Where does Never Go Back rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
The content ranks at the top, which is par for Dr. Henry Cloud. What could be complex concepts are broken down into easy to relate examples. These numbered concepts are the building blocks for any person wanting to review or learn new points for personal growth and achievement.
What did you like best about this story?
    Dr. Cloud's theme and content.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Michael Prichard?
DR. HENRY CLOUD. He's the best narrator of his work! See him on YouTube or try ANY book he narrates.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    Awesome!!
This book has SERIOUSLY helped me to better understand how Romans is applicable to me!! I've read the book of Romans too many times to count and I assumed I understood everything, but this study has helped me to better grasp the truths outlined by Paul. It has helped me to better understand salvation, sanctification, and what I should anticipate as a growing Christian. Praise be to God for His Word and for teachers of His Word!!
    Amazing
Amazing. Loved everything about this. I'm gonna listen again because it really went deep into what Paul is writing about. Kind of had my head spinning at times. It really helped me understand, for the first time, what the Bible means when it says we sinned in Adam. Highly recommended.
    What a Shame
Is there anything you would change about this book?
    A different narrator
What was one of the most memorable moments of Romans 1 - 7 for You?
Couldn't get pass the monotone of the narrator to tell you
What didnt you like about Maurice Englands performance?
    Monotone. He just seemed bored.
    Any additional comments?
I think Timothy Keller is fantastic and have a few of his other audio books that I love. It's a shame that such a great book in the New Testament, with Mr. Keller's spin, was butchered by this narrator. Too bad.
Good companion "listen" probably better read
Hard to absorb all Keller shares over audio. However, if you are studying Romans already it compliments it well using a different medium.

    Beyond Amazing!
This book is totally beyond amazing!!! Can't recommend this book enough!!! It will forever change your life!!!
    This book is on fire!!!!
This book is a must read for those being called by God. When the church offers disappointment, and the world lacks substance, and you know there is more. When you have done all you can do, and sought conventional methods, or previously perceived (by me) conventional methods, to break the strong holds.
When you know gods promise, but the sin of disbelief sets in. You have to get desperate.
This book offers the fundamental truth and biblical scripture to prove it and life experienced to illustrate the truth that God is the same today yesterday and evermore.
Get desperate for the spirit, this is a must hear. And hear it over and over again. Faith comes by hearing the word. I am grateful for this find amazing and blessed.
And armored up!!!! Which is far better than prayed up!!!! Read this book to learn how to put on your armor. And share!

What made the experience of listening to Fight the most enjoyable?
Honestly, the ability to playback at 1.5 speed. The author spoke very slowly and so speeding it up made it easier to listen to.
What did you like best about this story?
I really liked the passion you could hear in the author's voice. I also really liked the reality checks that he regularly inserted to make his points. Facts are facts. Guys are guys. I liked that the author wasn't afraid to step on toes or to be politically incorrect. Men are different than women. I really valued the routine challenges that the author gave to me. I also really liked the warriors prayer at the end. I was inspired.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
I felt like the narration was a little slow, so I had to play it back at a faster rate. I did like the real passionate way the author spoke.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, I listened to it over three days on my commute to and from work. I would think listening to it in one sitting may not be all that helpful because taking time to sit and reflect and pray on what you've heard would be really important.
    Any additional comments?
Overall, I really liked this book. I felt that the author did a great job communicating his message that we men were built to be warriors for God. While I didn't really relate to some of the examples and may disagree a bit about approach, I think the spirit of the book was totally on point. I am thankful having listened to it and would recommend it to a friend.
    Great lesson.
Wish I had listened earlier in life. I could have saved a lot of heartache and pain.
    I love listening to Craig.
I love listening to Craig narrate his own books. You can hear the unspoken things in the book through his voice reflection. Great story way to inspire men to be the man that they are called to be!
Great Book! Easy to listen to.
Great book, easy to listen to. I am a fan of Pastor Craig. I love listening to his Sermons and now his books. I would recommend this book to any man.
Powerful Message of Repentance and Redemption
It felt like Craig was speaking directly to me. I strongly recommend it for all men.
