    Title: Erasing Hell
Subtitle: What God Said about Eternity, and the Things We Made Up
    Author: Francis Chan, Preston Sprinkle
    Narrator: Preston Sprinkle
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 3 hrs and 5 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-05-11
    Publisher: Oasis Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 378 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
How could a loving God send people to Hell? Will people have a chance after they die to believe in Jesus and go to heaven? With a humble respect for Gods Word, Francis Chan and Preston Sprinkle address the deepest questions you have about eternal destiny. Theyve asked the same questions. Like you, sometimes they just dont want to believe in Hell. But, as they write, We cannot afford to be wrong on this issue.
This is not a book about who is saying what. Its a book about what God says. Its not a book about impersonal theological issues. Its a book about people God loves. Its not a book about arguments, doctrine, or being right. Its a book about the character of God. Erasing Hell will immerse you in the truth of Scripture as, together with the authors, you find not only the truth but the courage to live it out.

Great audio but get the book also.
Great book, but I think it is better to read in print slowly and next to your Bible. Deep topic that needs to be studied and reflected upon. The authors do a good job of directing you to scripture.
    Fantastic Response to Universalism
I was pretty floored by the fantastic rebuttal to "Love Wins", compassionate honesty, and exegetical research. Very powerful stuff, while still remaining very personal and un-academic. We can't afford to get this wrong.
"Bell Is Definitely Wrong, But We Don't Know Why"
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Astonishment. "Erasing Hell" was conceived, at least partially researched, written, edited, printed-en-masse, marketed, and released within just four months of the publication of the book it is attempting to refute.
    Any additional comments?
"Erasing Hell" should have been subtitled: Universalism Is Definitely False, But We Don't Know Why
I listened to the audiobook edition of this work, which contains an elaborative interview with the authors. In the interview, the authors (to whom I will refer collectively by the headlining name, though I understand that the greater part of the work was Sprinkle's) admit that the book is a response to "Love Wins" (a fact, as I recall, not acknowledged in the book), making Bell's book required reading for a fair shake but that both books are rather theologically, logically, and exegetically weak should be of concern to anyone caring to really approach the subjects at hand. "Love Wins" is a dabbling introduction to the debate between Everlasting Conscious Torment and Universal Reconciliation. "Erasing Hell" is a dabbling introduction to this subject, as well, but a dabbling introduction in rebuttal of another.
The main difference in this regard is that "Love Wins" embraces its role as an inadequate introduction a little more honestly than does "Erasing Hell". This is likely due in no small part to one of the very reasons Bell is ridiculed so continuously: he's more interested in making you think than in telling you what he thinks, so he can come off as a dodgy problem-starter with no answers. I don't know the man; this criticism may be more or less true: God knows him though I think it is a supremely Christian thing to give the benefit of the doubt.

  • The Heart of Christianity Audiobook by Marcus J. Borg

    Title: The Heart of Christianity
Subtitle: Rediscovering a Life of Faith
    Author: Marcus J. Borg
    Narrator: John Pruden
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 4 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-14-11
    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 120 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
World-renowned Jesus scholar Marcus J. Borg shows how we can live passionately as Christians in today's world by practicing the vital elements of Christian faith.
For the millions of people who have turned away from many traditional beliefs about God, Jesus, and the Bible, but still long for a relevant, nourishing faith, Borg shows why the Christian life can remain a transforming relationship with God. Emphasizing the critical role of daily practice in living the Christian life, he explores how prayer, worship, Sabbath, pilgrimage, and more can be experienced as authentically life-giving practices.
Borg reclaims terms and ideas once thought to be the sole province of evangelicals and fundamentalists: he shows that terms such as "born again" have real meaning for all Christians; that the "Kingdom of God" is not a bulwark against secularism but is a means of transforming society into a world that values justice and love; and that the Christian life is essentially about opening one's heart to God and to others.

book worth rediscovering for both head and heart
This is another example of a book I had on my shelves for years but might never have read if Audible hadn't featured it in a sale. I listened to it in two sessions: It's very accessible, yet very rich, and still holds up 8 years after initial publication. It would be well worth a full credit.
Borg synthesizes other, more in-depth work (which made for more dense listening/reading) into a more pastoral format. "Heart" for him is what is most central and alive, the driving force deeper than intellect -- It gives Christianity transformative power. And it's so good to hear a Jesus Seminar scholar who still speaks so positively about mainline Christianity, one that satisfies both "head and heart." Borg makes a case for emerging Christianity (Did he coin the term in this book?), but he does not denigrate anyone who does not agree with all or any of his views - His is a very respectful, welcoming stance, so I think the listen could appeal even to traditionalists who just want to understand the "other" paradigm for being Christian today. The open hands on the book cover are a perfect illustration of the content.
The narration is better than most similar nonfiction-- Narrators seem to be challenged in finding the right note in books on spirituality, but this one is easy on the ears.
    Finding Christianity Agan
What made the experience of listening to The Heart of Christianity the most enjoyable?
I always feel with Borg that I am being introduced to what I believe all over again.
What other book might you compare The Heart of Christianity to and why?
I liked Cahill's Desire of the Everlasting Hills, but Borg is even better. In fact, I would recommend both, Cahill first.
Which character as performed by John Pruden was your favorite?
Nonfiction books don't have main characters.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
More thrilling and honest than Dan Brown's works.
    Any additional comments?
Believer and nonbeliever will find this book enlightening.
    Faith without sacrificing intelligence. Beautiful.
Where does The Heart of Christianity rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Its different from my usual listens... I tend towards fiction.

I would have to say the main character is my most favorite.

    Title: The End of Reason
Subtitle: A Response to the New Atheists
    Author: Ravi Zacharias
    Narrator: Simon Vance
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 2 hrs and 37 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-03-10
    Publisher: Zondervan
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 471 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
When you pray, are you talking to a God who exists? Or is God nothing more than your "imaginary friend", like a playmate contrived by a lonely and imaginative child?
When author Sam Harris attacked Christianity in Letter to a Christian Nation, reviewers called the book "marvelous" and a generation of readers - hundreds of thousands of them - were drawn to his message. Deeply troubled, Dr. Ravi Zacharias knew that he had to respond.
In The End of Reason, Zacharias underscores the dependability of the Bible along with his belief in the power and goodness of God. He confidently refutes Harris's claims that God is nothing more than a figment of one's imagination and that Christians regularly practice intolerance and hatred around the globe.
If you found Sam Harris' Letter to a Christian Nation compelling, this audiobook is exactly what you need. Dr. Zacharias exposes "the utter bankruptcy of this worldview." And if you haven't read Harris' book, Ravi's response remains a powerful, passionate, irrefutably sound set of arguments for Christian thought. The clarity and hope in these words will reach out to listeners who know and follow God as well as to those who reject God.

    Great Philosophical Logic
Would you consider the audio edition of The End of Reason to be better than the print version?
Yes, good for people who hate reading. Philosophy is often dry on paper. This has the feel of a classroom lecture. A book would be good to highlight memorable points. Audio is hard for note taking, good for quick learning.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The End of Reason?
His knowledge of religion like Hinduism, Atheism, Christianity and Islam are unparalleled. With respect, he demolishes falsehoods.
Which character as performed by Simon Vance was your favorite?
    ...Rovi Zacharias was well performed.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

    Title: Generous Justice
Subtitle: How God's Grace Makes Us Just
    Author: Timothy Keller
    Narrator: Tom Parks
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 44 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-02-10
    Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 160 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
It is commonly thought in secular society that the Bible is one of the greatest hindrances to doing justice. Isnt it full of regressive views? Didnt it condone slavery? Why would we look to the Bible for guidance on how to have a more just society? But Timothy Keller, pastor of New York Citys Redeemer Presbyterian Church, challenges these preconceived beliefs and presents the Bible as a fundamental source for promoting justice and compassion for those in need.
In Generous Justice, he explores a life of justice empowered by an experience of grace: a generous, gracious justice. This book offers listeners a new understanding of modern justice and human rights that will resonate with both the faithful and the skeptical.
    Critic Reviews:
"This is the book I give to all my friends who are serious spiritual seekers or skeptics. (Rick Warren, author of
    The Purpose Driven Life, on
    The Reason for God)
    Members Reviews:
    A Solid Keller
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Generous Justice addresses God's injunction to care for the poor and oppressed by showing ties between those mandates and the Biblical concept of justice. If you are already familiar with Keller's work, you will recognize the theme and appreciate the references that flesh out his ideas as they are presented in this work. As to performance, I prefer when Keller presents his own material. This reading was lackluster and I found myself distracted often while listening. Still, it's a worthy listen.
What other book might you compare Generous Justice to and why?
This book lacks the earth shattering power of The Prodigal God but in its own quiet way, it addresses pure religion and redefines the meaning of what it is to be just.
    A Thinker.
As with most books of this genre, your thinking is taken to another level. For those of us who are "seekers", books by Timothy Keller are always introspective. Generous Justice makes a point of ensuring that the reader understand that service to others is an important part of living God's plan. I found myself "going back 30 seconds" many times to grasp a concept that was important to me.
The bad part about this audible book is that the narrator, Tom Parks, speaks entirely too fast. Maybe it is just me....but, I like to think about the words being spoken and he went too fast to enable me to properly do so.
All in all - Yes .... this book is worth the time and will enable you to understand why serving others is an important part of serving God.
    Biblical basis for social justice.
An excellent presentation of the Biblical basis for social justice by a minister who lived it out personally.
    Great book
This book takes a different look at Christianity. really makes you think about how we look at the poor, widows, and different races.
everyone should hear this or read it
America has lost it way. We have step to fare form God. This book help to show that justice is not something to just talk about, its part of Gods plan. It is part of what made this country almost great. But it will
never be great until we turn back to God and mean it when we say JUSTICE FOR ALL. And this book show that justice is a God thing.

    Much needed help and understanding..
I needed much help in understanding Demons and Satan. I have my own issues and this audio book was of great help to me. This is the SECOND book i downloaded. The first book (purging your house/Perry Stone) was more like a "Demons 101" and how to live your life in a way that keeps you safe from Evil. I AM FAR BEYOND THAT POINT. If you need the same kind of help, download this book. An added plus is that the narrator is very easy to listen to.
    Very Informative
    Any additional comments?
This book is very informative and helpful to understand that believers are in a constant battle for our lives. I just felt that it was a little extreme at time...gives you the impression that none can remain demon free. However, there were some very good examples of how to deal with evil spirits.
    Very enlightening!
Would you consider the audio edition of They Shall Expel Demons to be better than the print version?
For people on the go like me, yes.
What did you like best about this story?

What about James Adamss performance did you like?
    Yes! Excellent job.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Title: Culture Making
    Subtitle: Recovering Our Creative Calling
    Author: Andy Crouch
    Narrator: Sean Runnette
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 5 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-08-10
    Publisher: christianaudio.com
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 123 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
Andy Crouch unleashes a stirring manifesto calling Christians to be culture makers. For too long, Christians have had an insufficient view of culture and have waged misguided "culture wars." But we must reclaim the cultural mandate to be the creative cultivators that God designed us to be. Culture is what we make of the world, both in creating cultural artifacts as well as in making sense of the world around us. By making chairs and omelets, languages and laws, we participate in the good work of culture making.
Crouch unpacks the complexities of how culture works and gives us tools for cultivating and creating culture. He navigates the dynamics of cultural change and probes the role and efficacy of our various cultural gestures and postures. Keen biblical exposition demonstrates that creating culture is central to the whole scriptural narrative, the ministry of Jesus and the call to the church. He guards against naive assumptions about "changing the world," but points us to hopeful examples from church history and contemporary society of how culture is made and shaped. Ultimately, our culture making is done in partnership with God's own making and transforming of culture.
    Members Reviews:
    Required Reading
This is a book that I honestly think most Christian need to read.
Much of the Evangelical project of the last 50+ years has been about calling the world to God. And while I think the Evangelical church has been rightly moving toward a better sense of engagement with culture, I think that most Christians still think about culture too simplistically. Culture Making is a serious look at how culture impacts faith, how we as Christians can impact culture and the value of focusing efforts toward creation, not just in the church but for the whole world.
In many ways this book is about recoving a sense of vocation (although it does not use that term much.) For Crouch, we all have a role in culture and therefore our roles as Christians are to act as Christians in culture by using our God given talents. But what I like is that Crouch does not just say, "go and do." He really examens the fact that none of us as individuals really have the ability to either predict where culture is going, how our creativity will be recieved or to actually make a long term change in culure. Even those at the highest levels of power have very limited effects on culture.
The call to be culture makers is not without its dangers. Crouch notes "If our excitement about changing the world leads us to the grand illusion that we stand somehow outside the world, knowing what's best for it...we have not yet come to the reality that the world has changed us far more than we will ever change it. Beware of world changers, they have not yet learned the reality of sin." Crouch is not calling for utopiean visions, or political take overs. He is calling for great and small works that nudge culture to God. The utopiean visions will always be corrupted. That is part of the reality of sin and power.
In spite of the warnings and caveats, in the end I was inspired like few other books I have read recently.
    Im Short if Words!
To be honest, this is one book that has changed the way I see the world. It has sparked a new way of thinking in me that would last a lifetime.

Where does The Way of Perfection rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I'm an Argentine reader, I speak Spanish so English is not my mother tongue, nevertheless I was able to understand the narration and every detail of the book, Tavia's reading is absolutely fabulous.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
All the book is very good for the spirit and I would recommend it to people accustomed to read christian- spiritual books.
    2nd time
This is the second time I have listened to the book. I got so much more out of it then the first time. I am looking forward to listening to it the third time.
    A Spiritual Classic!
This is a spiritual classic, so no review of St. Teresa is necessary! In terms of the audiobook, this is a very well-done reading. The narrator has an odd way of pronouncing a few words that are repeated a lot. She pronounces "theologian" with 5 syllables and "prayer" with two syllables. After awhile this began to grate on me. My other criticism is that perhaps the narrator should have been an older woman, given the age of St. Teresa when she wrote this work. But overall, this was a very good reading of an excellent spiritual work. Despite my criticism, I would enjoy hearing books read by this narrator again.
