Once upon a time a dragon dared to fall in love with the Queen of Hearts.
Zelena Hermosa wants only one thing, to be free. But for a morphling like her freedom will never be possible. Bought by a witch as a baby, she's been raised in a household that knows no kindness or love. She's a broken, dirty child the day she meets her prickly little dragon boy.
Ragoth Nur, heir to the throne of Drakon, has just stolen a golden apple from Zeus's favored orchard. In order to make sure he doesn't have to face the wrath of the gods (but especially his mom) he runs off to wonderland to enjoy his treat and there bumps into the human girl who will change the course of his life forever.
There's so much more to the Queen of Hearts than the stories. So much more than the vindictive woman who shouts, "Off with her head."
This is the true story of the woman, the legend, and the myth.

    Stars: Overall: 5 Narration: 4 Story: 5
I adore this series, a nice twist and turn mix of fantasy and fairy tale mixed up just for adults. Jovee Winters has taken her unique view on love, ever after and the struggles to get there, deconstructing the wicked queens to show us their softer underbellies. The Queen of Hearts never really wanted her role, as we meet Zelena, raised without love or kindness, the witch who purchased the infant did so only to use the magic buried within her. And from early days, Zelena has been living a half-life, without love or kindness until she meets Ragoth.
Ragoth is heir to the throne of Drakon, and alternately favored or punished by the gods. After stealing an apple from Zeus orchard, he runs off with the treat to wonderland, where he meets a very angry, boastful and dirty Zelena. As children are wont to do, the two reveal their secrets in several successive meetings over the years, and form attachments that are based in friendship and some tender feelings of love. But Ragoth is a temperamental boy, and his reluctance to be steered in productive directions often lead to his changing form into a dragon, all the better to rain fire on that which displeases him. But Zelena is not even remotely cowed by his change, or his anger in fact the two have a rather prickly relationship that is peppered with boastful dismissals and statements.
Years pass and the two become very different people from what their early connection would indicate. Zelena is cold, calculating and more than self-aggrandizing. Taught by example to become the worst version of herself, when widowed Zelena is barely recognizable as the girl Ragoth once knew. But hes not had an easy time since claiming her as a child his lack of another mate and pointless existence without one have made him cynical and untrusting most of all, he wants to punish Zelena for leaving, for changing, and truly for hurting him.
Can these two find a better version of themselves than the ones that send people running in fear? Winters answers that and many other questions in a story that is engaging, enchanting and full of hope and promise.
Narration for this story is provided by Shiromi Arserio who presented the characters with flair, both as adults and children, with the perfect undertone of hurt, angst, flippancy and daring that was required to capture their personalities as the story moved along.

    Great Stories. Great Performance.
Each of the three stories is well written and stars an interesting cast and the well developed characters offer a refreshing contrast to the typical werewolf story. The narration and the way the story is told in the present tense from the main character's point of view makes it very engaging. It forces the reader to question the characters' views and question just how honest they are with themselves. The performance is a strong point of this title and offers an extra level of emotion to what are already very dark and compelling tales. My only complaint would be the short length and the feeling that these characters' stories are not quite finished.

Very shallow, and leaves a lot of questions
Firstly: I was a pretty big fan of books one and two, and while this one I'm only giving 3 stars, I still suggest you read it. My -2 on the stars is due to the fact that the story feels rushed or that the author got bored with it and really didnt want to put effort into it. There were so many opportunities for this book to flesh out some really awesome details but instead it remains very superficial and leaves a TON of questions.
    SPOILERS AHEAD:
We start off with a prologue of Brandubh upset over the loss of his dragons, but satisfied because he has spies everywhere and has some kind of "ace up his sleeve". Sounds dark and exciting right? Oh what can he have in store for our favorite hybrid?? It turns out to be almost nothing, which I will expand on further down.
Chapter One we are back with Stella, who is hiding out in the woods, a fugitive from both Brandubh and from the people and government of thayer. Dean Miles still has a vendetta against Stella and has released her journal entries to the entire population. How did she get such entries? Her Pia, who in books one and two is shown as being capable of interacting with their user, but not as being a complete AI with the ability to make decisions or think emotionally, decided to GIVE the Dean the files to "save" Stella. "Wwhen you revealed your origin, your relatives, and your encounters with the sorcerer, I was obligated to share that information with Radix Administration to protect not just the people of Thayer, but to protect you." In books one and two I felt like Pia was an advanced version of Siri, but certainly not an entity. If she -is- a full blown AI then wouldn't she have seen what happened when the files were released and said something? Or reported something? Anything? Instead she doesn't say a word, and lets her friends tell her whats happened and then when asked if someone had tried to access her files casually admits she did it? In response to this they shut down Pia and toss her in the river, which doesn't stop Pia from sending the Dean her location before she's shut down. So Pia turns out to be a kind of bad... phone? Siri? Thing?
Anyways, Dean Miles and her gang shes riled up about dragons find the cabin and surround it. With her is Gresham of course. So conveniently at the same time Bay and Stella's mother have dropped the wards on the cabin in an attempt to lure out Brandubh. Which we dont find out til later, but which is incredibly stupid from a tactical point of view as they tell Stella they have no real plan for how to defeat him.

Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Paranormal
    Publisher's Summary:
A novel set in a fantastical version of the American West.
The noose jumper era was a chaotic time of lawlessness in the late 1800s when a growing tide of outlaws engaged in a race to become famous. Most of them ended up at the noose.
Three young men emerge from a small town in the territory of New Mexico. They are bound by a pact and guided by mysterious powerful beings that no one else can see. Together they must face off against the Sheriff of Puerta de la Muerte, a wicked man who cannot be struck by bullets. Are they destined to become legends, or are they just mere noose jumpers?
Noose Jumpers is written by Trevor H, Cooley, author of the highly acclaimed Bowl of Souls series.

    Western meets fantasy... cool!
What did you love best about Noose Jumpers?
I really loved the idea behind their individual talents. The whole fact that belief enhances that talent is a really cool idea.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Sandy, even though he has one of the deadliest talents in the book, he does not use it to kill, most of the time.
    Which scene was your favorite?
When Sandy saves the Coyote's son, when you have that sort of aim, even hopelessness doesn't stand a chance.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Even the best outlaws had help.
    Any additional comments?
I received this book for free from the author, narrator, or publisher via audiobookboom for an unbiased review.
Fun book. Good story. Misleading title.
What did you love best about Noose Jumpers?
I liked the diversity of the characters. Cooley has a way of making you relate to every character in the novel.
What did you like best about this story?
The suspense in figuring out what game was actually being played here.
What does Andrew Tell bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Andrew Tell is very good at distinguishing between many different characters. Having only heard him 8 other books of one series, there were a couple time where I was confused as a bit character in this novel was briefly in my mind the sentient ax from that series. It happened one other time too, but with the total number of characters in both series, it is amazing that there weren't more collisions..
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I've heard people had avoided this book because it was a western. I'm not positive it is a western any more than Firefly is a western. I avoided it because I made assumptions about what "Noose Jumpers" meant and I was completely wrong. I ended up finishing this book before I completed Sue Grafton's long awaited "Y is for Yesterday" because Noose Jumpers drew me in deeper into its world.
    Any additional comments?
A fun book with a good story. A book I read in spite of the title.
I'm glad I took a chance on "Noose Jumpers". With the book not initially taking off in sales as expected, Cooley once said "if you have come to trust my writing through my other books please give it a chance". I'm glad I did. My first impressions based upon the cover alone were pretty much all wrong.
The title and the short film seemed to place it firmly in the camp of novels with "Gods" popping in and out of the story with no real system of magic or limit to it.

    Maybe We're All Dragons
A couple of things to know: I read the books back to back and canât figure out how to separate the reviews so this covers both. Also, I rarely read paranormal material but these were recommended by a coworker.
I was pleasantly surprised with the books. The plot gets off the ground fairly quickly and moves at a steady pace. The writing is descriptive without being exhausting. I found the dialogue between the female characters to be fun and witty. Thereâs the standard testosterone tension between the male characters but where would the female characters be without it? I could easily envision the environment and vibe of the alternate universe and its inhabitants. I thought it was clever of the author to reference a few classic novels and I can only assume she hopes to point younger readers in that direction, which I think is cool.
On the surface, these are light reading, fantasy novels. If you look a little deeper, they do what good books should do. They remind us that all beings come with different pieces, experiences, desires and perceived truthsâthat we should strive to understand and appreciate everyoneâs beauty and complexity. Any book that reminds you of those principles is worth your time. Iâm looking forward to book 3!
4 Team Rowan Gresham all the way because I'm a sucker for a redeemable hero stars!
As soon as I finished this novel I literally said, ":sigh: I'm all for a redeemable hero so Ewan just isn't working out for me, I love Rowan Gresham." I can't help it, nobody wants the safe and boring choice, come on! I suppose I'm getting ahead of myself and need to reign myself back in.
This is book two in the series and picks off right where the first book ends. Stella learns Gresham's position which sends her into a panic attack. She feels betrayed by the one person she felt she could trust but that doesn't last long when the undeniable attraction tugs at them and he apologizes. What does last is her distrust of Gresham which he proves he earned time and again. Stella gets closer to her friends and eventually turns to Ewan after separating herself from Gresham.
Gresham has done what he believed to be fair and just given his position and his feelings towards Stella.

    Disappointing
I greatly enjoyed the earlier books in the series, but found this one disappointing. For what maybe the final book in the series there was no climatic conflict, rather it was the characters muddling around until a happy ending drops out of the sky.

    Very Dark
The author as narrator is wonderful. The book is well written with excellent character development, is fast-paced and suspenseful, but becomes extremely gruesome and bloody. I almost could not finish this book due to the vivid horror described in excruciating detail during the latter half of the book. I feel that the book would have been a much better work if there had been less pain, gore and nightmare.
spectacularly read. truly great. story was less so
I was disappointed at the gratuitous sensuality. story gained nothing. and ridiculous use of profanity. offensive.
otherwise the story was good. characters from the first story remain true and we enjoy them.
sometimes you get the feeling things were weird and gory just to be weird and gory. strange reasoning of accepting alternate lifestyles. not as good as the first. not something I can share with my kids...we're probably going to return the story.
BUT : the author is fan-stinkin-tactic at his narration. his command of voices was as good as ANY reader, even Jim Dale, who is the king. I kept listening just to hear his voice.
    Editing mishaps
The book is excellent and the narration fine. But there are several minor hiccups in editing in which there are too long pauses or repeated lines.
A great followup to The Oversight
Very nice second chapter with adequate narration by the author. Can't wait for The Remnant
