    Publisher's Summary:
Even in Empire City, a town where weird science is the hope for tomorrow, it's hard for a robot to make his way. It's even harder for a robot named Mack Megaton, a hulking machine designed to bring mankind to its knees. But Mack's not interested in world domination. He's just a bot trying to get by, trying to demonstrate that he isn't just an automated smashing machine, and to earn his citizenship in the process. It should be as easy as crushing a tank for Mack, but some bots just can't catch a break.
When Mack's neighbors are kidnapped, Mack sets off on a journey through the dark alleys and gleaming skyscrapers of Empire City. Along the way, he runs afoul of a talking gorilla, a brainy dame, a mutant lowlife, a little green mob boss, and the secret conspiracy at the heart of Empire's founders - not to mention more trouble than he bargained for. What started out as one missing family becomes a battle for the future of Empire and every citizen that calls her home.
    Critic Reviews:
"Martinez tickles the funny bone in this delightful, fast-paced mishmash of SF and hard-boiled detective story.... Eccentric characters, all of whom are clever twists on stereotypes, populate a smart, rocket-fast read with a clever, twisty plot that comes to a satisfying conclusion." (Publishers Weekly)
This combination sci-fi/hard-boiled detective story is a hoot.Narrator Marc Vietor approaches the story with a classic noir tone that is hilarious. (AudioFile)

    Wonderful Narration performance
A good story mixing the genre of hard boiled detective yarn with solid Science fiction with a deft touch of humor this was the first by this author I have listened too it will not be the last.
But major kudos for the performance by the narrator. I have listened to Mr. Vietor before and found him to be one of the better artists here on Audible but this performance moves him up to the top rank. his work catches all the best notes of a classic Dragnet and has just the right deadpan "just the Facts, ma m" tone and is to be praised.
I have bought over 230 books here and other than the works of the masters of classic Science fiction (you know who they are) and Terry Pratchett's works this is the first 5 star I have given to a 'new' author
A charming hard-boiled, hardware detective story
A bot's gotta' do what a bot's gotta' do. Automated citizen candidate (pending full citizenship) Mack Megabot drives a cab and scratches out a scanty living, barely able to pay for his electrical recharges and his rent. He enjoys a higher status than other robots, and has been deemed eligible for potential citizenship after he completes a probationary period.
Marc Vietor does a superb job of reading this wondrous tale - I would not have loved it nearly as much if it had been read in a traditional manner. Vietor does the hardboiled detective to perfection, giving Mack a voice and a personality beyond what Martinez gave him in words.
Mack stumbles into a kidnapping of a biological (human) family that he knows. He doesn't really feel affection, and doesn't have friends in the traditional sense, but he's a learning robot, and he's learning to care.

    Publisher's Summary:
Former Marine gunnery sergeant Torin Kerr is attempting to build a new life with salvage operator Craig Ryder on his ship, the Promise. Turns out civilian life is a lot rougher than she'd imagined - salvage operators are losing both cargo and lives to pirates. And when they attack the Promise, Craig is taken prisoner and Torin is left for dead. When Torin finds out why the pirates needed Craig, she calls in the Marines to get him back - and to stop the pirates from changing the balance of power in known space.

    Life After the Military
I was curious to see where Tonya Huff would take the Confederation series now that the war was over and Torin unemployed. With the Plastic alien riddle solved, what was left for her heroine to do? Fortunately for us, she settles in with Craig as a salvager - and finds a world just as corrupt and just as stupid as the military.
Story: Life as a salvager aboard the Promise with Craig isn't terrible - in fact, it is a nice change of pace for Torin. Until their ship is attacked and destroyed by pirates, Craig taken, and Torin left to die alone in space. But Torin never gives up and will not only have to solve the riddle of why the pirates wanted Craig alive but also to find where they have taken him and how to get him back - alive and in one piece. And without a spaceship.
Admittedly, the pirates were kind of a one dimension evil - but then again, I never expected pirates to be the smartest guys in space, either. Huff does an admirable job of creating a post war universe where stations run under the radar and there is still a lot of war debris to salvage. As well, we have yet another story where Torin makes smart choices and the right sacrifices in order to succeed. The military efficiency that saved her units' lives now works in her favor to survive the pirates and their plans for Craig and the Salvagers.
I am glad this isn't the last book and I eagerly look forward to the next book in the series.
    Love a kick butt female!
I was so happy there was another book to this series. I've gotten attached to the characters. This book is about Torin after she leaves the Marines and her adventures salvaging with Craig. Not as much action as in her other books but still worth it! Marguerite Gavin is an awesome narrator.
    Fun...
I enjoyed the rest of this series, and this book did not disappoint... good fun, and I look forward to seeing what happens next...
another good one in the series
I found this one a little harder to get through, but nice to see the character development outside the core. certainly ends strong, and would listen to another.
    Just wasn't as good
So, I've read all of the books in the series, and have been VASTLY impressed and happy and squee about them. Until this one. Kerr just ... wasn't herself (which, I think, was the point) and the book just didn't have the immediacy and awesomeness the others did. I couldn't connect to it - couldn't bring myself to care overly much about what happened. I think, if this is going to be the last book, that I'll just consider the series to have ended with Valor's Trial. Of course, if a new book in the series were to be written, I'd still get it, in hopes that it would be as wonderful as the others were.

    Publisher's Summary:
Hollis Henry worked for the global marketing magnate Hubertus Bigend once before. She never meant to repeat the experience. But she's broke, and Bigend never feels it's beneath him to use whatever power comes his way -- in this case, the power of money to bring Hollis onto his team again. Not that she knows what the "team" is up to, not at first.
Milgrim is even more thoroughly owned by Bigend. He's worth owning for his useful gift of seeming to disappear in almost any setting, and his Russian is perfectly idiomatic - so much so that he spoke Russian with his therapist, in the secret Swiss clinic where Bigend paid for him to be cured of the addiction that would have killed him.
Garreth has a passion for extreme sports. Most recently he jumped off the highest building in the world, opening his chute at the last moment, and he has a new thighbone made of rattan baked into bone, entirely experimental, to show for it. Garreth isn't owned by Bigend at all. Garreth has friends from whom he can call in the kinds of favors that a man like Bigend will find he needs, when things go unexpectedly sideways, in a world a man like Bigend is accustomed to controlling.
As when a Department of Defense contract for combat-wear turns out to be the gateway drug for arms dealers so shadowy that even Bigend, whose subtlety and power in the private sector would be hard to overstate, finds himself outmaneuvered and adrift in a seriously dangerous world.
    Members Reviews:
Bigend needed a little more Blomkvist
The Bigend trilogy could have been a smarter version of the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - essentially this is that series if Delillo (circa White Noise) had been at the keyboard. They are both fun and sharp, but what one lacks in sticky insights the other lacks in action, and each (like the reader) suffers a bit. Bigend is a great idea for a character, but there isn't much "there there" - HH's endless soul searching is fatiguing and Milgrim (who ought to be a little more like Bourne, imho) just comes across as muddle minded. All that said, it is filled with good stuff about what would best be characterized as a long rumination on the nerd hive mind. If you are interested in memes, gear/fashion fetish culture and corporate design espionage, this is the only game in town.
    Gibson's Amazing Zero History
Gibson's most famous quote (which I'm sure he's tired of by now) is, "the future is already here it's just not very evenly distributed". If Gibson's next book is to be on higher education he would not find a better place to start his research than at EDUCAUSE.
Zero History, the 3rd book in Gibson's Bigend trilogy, is about fashion (or anti-fashion), military contracting, inflatable spy drones, and much else. If you read Pattern Recognition and Spook Country (and if you have not you should), I'm betting that Zero History is already on your reading device.

The unrelenting war against the hordes has taken its toll on the fatigued humans, and the Bantag horde's latest siege has broken the Republic's will to fight. Keane resigns his position in the Republic's government when a peace parley is declared. Gathering the remaining veterans of the 35th Maine to his side, he plans a campaign that will take the Lost Regiment into the heart of the Bantag Empire to annihilate their ability to wage war once and for all. The outcome of this suicide mission will decide the fate of the human race on a world far from Earth.

    Loved it.
I have read the entire series and was looking forward to reading the final chapter on my down time from work rotation. Had to stay longer than anticipated and decided to read via Audible. Great Narrator and even better book.
Was not disappointed, Great Addtion to the Series
Not every book in the series has been a solid addition, but this one stands out and brings to a close the story for the beloved characters. The end is both unexpected and thought provoking. I admire the strength of character Forstchen wrote into his characters and will miss them as book 9 moves on to focus on the children of the characters that this series has followed. Overall I highly recommend the series, though some of the books are not as good as others the series as whole was well written and well narrated.
Action packed with some related story of politics
If you could sum up Men of War in three words, what would they be?
    Action Betrayal Peace
What was one of the most memorable moments of Men of War?
Too many to pick just one
    Which scene was your favorite?
I liked so many it would be hard to pick just one
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    The Lost Regiment Survives
    Any additional comments?
Read all so far and look forward to the last one, Liked the action and characters in the story line the read was very good also
A very good book and a damn good series
A very good book and a damn good series. I'll read these books again and again. I already miss the characters, having grown fond of so many of them through the authors amazing ability to bring them to life. I look forward to the next phase of the series that picks up years afterwards with "Down to the Sea".
    Act I Finale
Book 8 was an excellent end to the 1st story. Book 9 is the start of a new story.

    Slow paced, a bit dull
This wasn't a horrible book, but it was surprisingly dull compared to all the other books in this series.
The 'aliens' are even more human like than in the rest of Ringo's universe, to the extent they can be easily converted to human religion. To be fair, the characters are likeable and interesting.
Do NOT read this book until you've read most or all of the Aldenata series. To enjoy it at all you'll need to be pretty familiar with the Aldenata universe.
If you are a Ringo fan but can't get through the endless talking talking talking comprises most of this book, at least listen to the last five minutes, there is some interesting foreshadowing there.
    Different but good
Definitely not what I was expecting... Posleen heroes, but a good read nevertheless.
    Sorta religion and sci-fi mixed
This is the book you should read after the Watch on the Rhine and Yellow eyes but before Cally's War and Sister Time, I might have mentioned before that its after Sister Time but it makes more sense to read it before that.
This book is back with the Posleen and Humans, sorta after the ending of the other 2 books written by the same 2 people, Watch on the Rhine and Yellow Eyes - there are some good characters back here and some new ones also, but there is this whole religion thing along with this book and the other 2 (the rest of Ringos stuff isnt like this) and really its not needed, I mean who would believe in religion anymore after its proven that everything that your religion is made of is false, the Aliens say they are false because they have been around since Humans were living in caves - how then can anyone be so stupid as to believe in it anymore? this should have been left out of the books and is the reason the story gets a 3 out of 5 stars.
There is this journey to find the Posleen home world and how its sosposta help the Posleen become more normal and not kill everyone they meet, things happen along the way that are not expected but in the end fit into the story pretty good.
This is like the other 2 books Watch on the Rhine and Yellow Eyes, if you didnt like those you probably wont like this one and really all 3 can be skipped if you are reading the Aldenata Series of books, but look at my other reviews for the correct order to read them in
    interesting story
the story is interesting and progresses relationships between the species but it is a little slow.
darn it. I want another book
Great book . great performance. continues the story from yellow eyes but is stand alone. I heartily reccomend it.

Among those operatives are Temudjin Oh, of mysterious Mongolian origins, an un-killable assassin who journeys between the peaks of Nepal, a version of Victorian London, and the dark palaces of Venice under snow; Adrian Cubbish, a restlessly greedy City trader; and a nameless, faceless state-sponsored torturer known only as the Philosopher, who moves between time zones with sinister ease.
Then there are those who question the Concern: the bandit queen Mrs. Mulverhill, roaming the worlds recruiting rebels to her side; and Patient 8262, under sedation and feigning madness in a forgotten hospital ward, in hiding from a dirty past.
There is a world that needs help - but whether it needs the Concern is a different matter.

Finally an Iain M. Banks book on audible...
I've been a long time fan of Iain M. Banks, especially his sci fi -- the Culture books in particular. I search his name in Audible every month. I wish there were audio versions of all these books -- Player of Games, Consider Phlebas, Use of Weapons, Excession, etc. ...
Banks' ideas and characters are inspired. His plots are improved with a second reading (listening), when you recognize details and have insights into the secrets of his fascinating characters.
Transition weaves the stories of six people through time and alternate dimensions. Among them a despotic bureaucrat and her moralistically superior outlaw rival, a narcissistic stock broker, a torturer, and the transitioner -- a sympathetic assassin who can "flit" his consciousness into another body in another dimension. Banks explores this cool concept in depth.
The narrator is fantastic. I'm going to look for other books read by him.
There are scenes in this book, like most of Banks' books, that are very harsh. The torturer's story, for example, is hard to listen to at times. This is definitely not a book for kids.
Highly recommended. If you enjoy books like Snow Crash, William Gibson, etc., then you'll probably like it a lot.
    Brilliant Science Fiction
I'm so grateful to Iain M. Banks for writing yet another complex, moving, intelligent and well told story and for Peter Kenny for doing such a wonderful job narrating it. Transition is a book worthy of the this same science fiction author who wrong "Look to Windward" and the "Algebraist".
Please be aware that Iain M. Banks tends to write very richly crafted villains as well as heroes, so if you're squeamish he's not for you. I'm not squeamish, of course, and love his style.
Finally, part of what makes Transition so rich is that it ties itself obliquely yet solidly to problems we face in our world, and he lets us make judgements for ourselves without telling us what to think. This is a great book.
Banks is a master of complex challenging sci-fi
I'm a huge Iain M Banks fan, and this book has been my favorite listen on audible so far. If only there were more of his books here. Please please please add some from the Culture Universe.
Banks writes complex, thoughtful and challenging sci-fi.... exploring themes in which morality is curved, good and evil are never quite straightforward and the narration can be interestingly non linear. If you like your protagonists to be sometimes flawed while always interesting, and your antagonists sometimes sympathetic yet always vile. Take a ride with Banks.
    Peter Kenny's narration is superlative.

    Important for the Honorverse Story!
A well told story set in the "honorverse" a must listen for all who follow the series or the next "main line" book Mission of Honor will not make alot of sense.
I want to point out to the negative reviews that this is the 14th book in the Honor Harrington Series, while marketed as a sequel to The Shadow of Saganami it is not truly a sequel, infact the author does not think of it as a sequel but as a major part in the main story.
the best i can say is, DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS WITH OUT READING?LISTENING TO THE REST OF THE SERIES
if you do not it will not make sense to you and will leave you feeling like the negative reviewers
now i do have a bit of a negative, and that is the reader. he mispronounces Manticoran as Man TIC orin. and his female voices are poorly done, should have been 2 readers 1 male, 1 female
Great story for Weber fans; narration so-so
If you are already a David Weber/Honor Harrington fan, this is a great book. I will guess that some of the poor reviews for this book were written by people who have not previous read any of the HH series. If you haven't this is NOT the place to start. The Harrington series is long, complex, involved, and wonderful if you start from the first book and work your way through. It is not shoot-'em-up space action, it has politics, intrigue, plotlines that build on previous novels, and action that takes place at 'realistic' stellar distances, not WWII-style dogfighting. If that's not what you're looking for, this is simply not your cup of tea - but that doesn't mean it's not a good book!
If you ARE a Weber fan, this book takes place contemporaneously with the previous two novels (Shadow of Saganami and War of Honor), so the intertwining plot lines can be confusing if you've forgotten what happened in those books. There is a huge setup/cliffhanger at the end for another novel (or novels) which I suspect may 'wrap up' the Harrington series (but I hope not!).
That being said, I do agree with the reviewer who wished the narrator was a woman. A majority of the main characters in this series are females, so the choice of a male narrator doesn't make sense. Previous Harrington novels were voiced by Allyson Johnson and Barbara Rosenblat, who did a fine job. Jay Snyder is a very good narrator, but is not able to pull off a convincing female voice - all the women sounded like falsetto characters from a Monty Python skit to me (sorry Mr. Snyder, I thought you were great otherwise!).
The audio production is a mess
I'm about 1/4 of the way through it, and finding it painful to imagine being halfway through it. This is not to say anything against the novel itself. It's just that the novel doesn't lend itself to the audio format.

The story line is a political stretch
What was most disappointing about John Birminghams story?
The story keeps digging into politics. I don't think the author understands American politics. I can handle the worm hole story in the plot but too unbelievable was an aircraft carrier named after Hillary Clinton and a flag officer stating that the military loved Hillary Clinton. The author keeps banging a drumb about race relations, that in 2021 magically all of the race issues that the U.S. Struggles with are resolved. If the author had brought his political and race agenda up only a dozen times per chapter, I might have been able to continue with the book. The politics just destroyed the book for me. Bottom line, a worm hole to the past is far more believable than the authors vision of American politics and Americas racial problems.
    Excellent Alternate History
I really enjoyed the premise of this book and rank the storytelling right up there with Jack Campbell's "Lost Fleet Series" in the intensity of the action and portrayal of characters.
There may be too much gratuitous sex sprinkled throughout though. I really don't need to know about Beria getting ready to masturbate to pornography while talking to Stalin (book 3). And way too much with Slim Jim.
    Worth the credits.
    Superb!
This is a great read and Jay Snyder does a wonderful job of it. Wow, what a Tom Clancy type action tech thriller. I can't put it down and can't wait to read the next one. A terrific science fiction time twister indeed. Fabulous!
Great... addicted to another loooooong series!
Oh no I am once again addicted to a long series about military time travel/alternative universe! I am as hooked on this one as I was at first with Destroyermen by Taylor Anderson. This is something I am not happy with because the Destroyermen series is not yet complete or available yet! I swear if this series leaves me hanging as well I will go crazy!
I loved this first book. It was well written, had plenty of characters, created just enough tension, and involved enough history and modern day problems to help you feel the drama of the story.
This book screams for a multiple narrators to help with the different characters. But none the less I didnt mind the narration. The speed was easily increased which decreased the length of listening time. However, even if you watch your listening credit per hour ratio (like I do as I am a cheap skate) this title still gives you a lot of listening time. The problem is you wont be able to put it down and it will be over before you know it!
I brought this one without checking the reviews or even reading the blurb about.

Matching the invaders' swelling firepower will mean marshaling an armada of battle-ready ships for Ky to lead into combat. But a violent skirmish leaves Ky reeling - and presumed dead by her enemies.
Now, as Turek readies an all-out attack on the Nexus system - a key conquest that could seal the rest of the galaxy's doom - Ky must rally to the challenge, draw upon every last reserve of her strategic skills, and reach deep if she is to tear from the ashes of tragedy her most decisive victory.

"Rip-roaring action and intriguing science and tactics distinguish Nebula-winner Moon's fifth and final Vatta's War installment.... A fine and fitting conclusion to Moon's grand space opera tour de force." (

Holloway's Narration Distracts from Space Opera
Elizabeth Moon's satisfactory conclusion to her Vatta's War series is marred by Cynthia Holloway's uninformed narration.
Come on! When you're reading a Sci Fi book, it's important--vital--to understand the words your are paid to pronounce and the context in which you say them. So, when "nanites" becomes "nan-i-tees," for example, well, it's a Sci Fi fan's nightmare.
    Chalkboard, fingernails, flinch, flinch, flinch!
Her voice characterizations are quite good--I appreciate her craft. So, then, in this case, perhaps the real blame goes to the director and editor. Again, no excuses acceptable.
We SF fans are a picky bunch--it's the technical details--or at least the approximation of them--that matters. Without that, one might as well read historical fiction or something.
good series let down by bad narration
I had the pleasure of listening to the rest of the series in either the Graphic Audio version (very good!) or the narrator from the original tape versions (I don't have her name). This narrator is just.. bad. No sense of the dramatic, bad voices. I think I'd rather be reading it in book form!
Finally, some action. But too little and too late.
This is the final book in the Vatta's War quintet, and I can honestly say I'm glad that there are no more. The reader is simply awful. Stilted, with no sense of dramatic flow and truly terrible voices for some characters. The final book should have been the most exciting and satisfying as Ky finally gets the fleet she needs and the battles happen. But instead, we get additional characters who add little to the story and yet we STILL have to hear their angst and stupidity play out. This entire series could have been quite good as a trilogy. But it simply hasn't stood the test of time. It's YA space opera, but it's not _good_ YA space opera.
The last book in the series
I got hooked on this series and am unhappy it is ending. From the first book to this one we have watch Kylara Vatta grow from a cadet in military school to the Admiral of a coalition space force. The big battle against the pirate force takes place in this book.

"Stirling's imaginative foray into time travel should please fans of alternative history." (Library Journal)

Through the first two books of the series
and I am richer for the experience. These travels back through time somewhat reminiscent of Weber's Safehold series are such an enlightening mix of history and science fiction. Nantucket citizens of the present are cast back 30 centuries into the past privileged to forge a brave new world. The characters are unexpected time travelers. Who would conceive of a black woman admiral in command of the Nantucket navy doing battle with the ancient Greeks and Egyptians led by one of the most evil characters ever brought to life in literature? I cheered her victories out loud. 75 hours of relentless interest. What a great series. Buy this and you won't be disappointed if you would love to change the past.
This third installment got quite a bit more tedious than the first two installments covering too much territory and too many battles as the characters got lost in the action. But I suppose it was difficult to avoid. I loved the first two books and merely enjoyed most of the third.
    Enjoyed it!
I hope there will be more. This series git me through many a long drive.
A terrific conclusion to a story for the ages.
Stirling concludes his Nantucket series in epic fashion, tying up all the loose ends and weaving just enough threads for a second set of tales that we are all hoping to read!
one of the best time travel stories
This is one of the best time travel stories I have ever read. The characters are interesting and the time period is one not usually visited in similar stories. There is good action, suspense, and twists. The narrator is great at differentiating characters. Story is great.
    Great story, Confusing chapter intro
great story concept. I didn't like the way that each chapter begin with the dates and locations in which it took place. The main problem was that the same chapter would include three or four locations and a similar date , but didn't have clear differentiation between when you were switching from one place to another within the chapter.
