Ideas are more interesting than people!

This book takes the series in a different direction from what I expected. As always, with Hogan one gets more ideas than characters. (The author reminds me of Arthur C. Clark in that respect). Here the ideas involve around more in depth understanding on the nature of evolution, time dilution, and planet formation. One could read this story without having had read book one and would have no problem following the story.

Hogan's one of my favorite science fiction authors and with this second book in the series he doesn't disappoint.

Great Story of First Contact

So much of sci-fi is pessimistic in nature. Taking the ills of society and extrapolating them to the extreme. Hogan's "Giant's Series" is so good because he show's humanity for the good they can do. The scientific progress they can make and how welcoming they can be. Get this book.

A Fabulous Who Done It

While it is not Inherit The Stars, this second book in the series brings enough twists and turns to keep the reader/listener wanting more.

The second I'm a three book series is always the toughest to execute, but Hogan is a Master at keeping his readers turning the pages to find the answers to each new question he raises.

Time to see where it all leads. Bring on "Giant's Star"!

What did you love best about The Gentle Giants of Ganymede?

I first read Inherit the Stars 35 years ago... and I can honestly say that it was one of the inspirations that lead me to become a scientist. Being a young reader, I followed up with The Gentle Giants. In a fit of nostalgia, I bought the audio book (along with the two direct sequels to the trilogy). Although the book feels very dated and sexist, it is still an enjoyable story without diverting too much into new age phooey (unlike the final book of the trilogy, Giant's Star). I did truly enjoy many of the concepts regarding how the Giants evolutionary pathway and physiology determined their race's outlook on life. Some of the science does tend to get a bit far fetched, but still more or less works. The narration is passable at best.

Excellent addition to the Liaden Universe

Clan Korval is on Surebleak, and the Bosses have started a school. Young Syl Vor, bored by himself in the clan house, moves to the city to live with his mother, Nova yos'Galan to attend school. Meanwhile, the Kompani have saved the life of Rys Lin pen'Chala, a Field Agent of the Department of the Interior who was beaten and left for dead near the underground home of the Kompani and found by Kezzi, a young apprentice healer.

Kezzi is caught as a truant by Mike Golden (Nova's "Hand"), and taken to the school where she meets Syl Vor. Syl Vor proposes her to Nova as his Sister, and they become good friends while building a bridge between the Korval and the Kompani. To tell more would be too much, however.

The story could easily be a simple YA addition to the Liaden Universe, but it actually explores more than that and introduces characters that I think will have a significant influence in the future. And to dismiss it as mere YA is to totally miss the point.

The reader is Eileen Stevens, who is also the reader for the Fledgling Arc of the Liaden Universe. I found her reading quite good, with characters easily distinguished while not being overly intrusive. If I had one complaint it is that when the story switches viewpoints and storylines, which it does regularly, Ms. Stevens didn't provide a "whitespace" break between the story lines. Even a 1/2 second gap would have helped clarity. But really, I'm nitpicking. A thoroughly enjoyable story, and highly recommended. If you're new to the Liaden Universe, this story is essentially standalone, but still probably not the best starting point. I'd start with Balance of Trade, Local Custom, Agent of Change, or Fledgling. Really, any would do, but I think personally I'd go for Agent of Change, which was the very first published book in the series, though not the chronologically first. IAC, if you're just starting, you have a treat ahead of you!

Schoolyard Thugs, Gypsies, Dragons, & Spies

Space Opera, set on Planet Surebleak. Much MUCH richer as part of the Liaden Series, but comprehensible as a stand alone. One of my favorites in the series, even though the chief protagonists are only about 12 years old. These two kids outwit school-yard bullies and deadly Agents of Change. No magical dramliza to save the day (which gets boring). Instead, Nova's fierce and honorable son Syl Vor (aka "Young Dragon") must duke it out.

He's a fabulous character, a little lonely, at times bored, and striving to overcome his recent nightmare experiences on Runig's Rock, when he was hiding from merciless killers while protecting newborn twins.

Black mark on the series

I'll start by saying, I chose to listen to this novel despite other reviews because I didn't want to miss any plot points leading into the 4th book, which looks interesting. This was a mistake. There are no plot developments in this book. Nothing of lasting import happens. I suggest skipping ahead.

Where the first book was about Davey resolving emotional trauma, and the second was about his imprisonment, this one is almost entirely about their daughter and her trials as a teenager. The only problem with this character-centric story is that the character is uninteresting. She is the perfect child in every way. She's good at sports, a genius, beautiful, loved by all, has super powers that she uses frequently in front of people without anyone noticing, and doesn't fail at a single thing through the whole book. In short, she's not a realistic human being.

As other reviewers have said, this is very much a high school drama (heavy on the drama) and has almost nothing to do with Davey and Millie. Not my cup of tea to start with but I have enjoyed such things from time to time. However, the character issues make this a bad book even for that genre. To be fair, there is a good bit of action. Cent does her share of butt kicking but she always wins without effort. There is no suspense. The only bit that piqued my interest was when the NSA came into it but it was over within 15 minutes and nothing came of it. All the more disappointing after I spent the whole book HOPING the NSA would capture Cent to put a stop to her nonsense.

There are other problems as well. Cent has a nemesis that is pure evil to the extent that she has the same problem as Cent's character. No shades of gray. She also has a posse who are all, likewise, one-dimensional. Gould tried to remedy this with an explanation for their behavior at the end but it was unconvincing to me, not to mention disturbing...

Cent discovers that she can use her teleportation ability to manipulate her speed. For one, I have trouble believing that Davey never thought of this, considering it was he who realized decades earlier that teleporting effects frames of relative motion. That aside, Cent uses this ability at literally every opportunity with little regard for observers. Issues with its use are also overlooked. For example, she uses it to gain inhuman bursts of speed running, ignoring the fact that the sudden acceleration would cause her to trip. Moreover, all the effects to her body of high speed impact and sudden acceleration are ignored. This might not be so jarring if the author had not, up to this point, given significant consideration to the physics of "jumping" previously.

A pity the unabridged version is inferior

Fans waited for an unabridged version of the audiobook with bated breath... and it's been a bit of a letdown. For a book that seems tailor-made for the aural medium - it is a spoken word history of the titular war after all - the performances were uneven, some of them particularly weak, and some of the accents were absolutely terrible. Given the care and thought that went into the original abridged celebrity-laden audio book - not even legally available in some countries - it's a pity that the same attention wasn't given to this unabridged version. There are countless audiobook performers who, although not stars like Alan Alda, Henry Rollins etc, could have done very good jobs with these stories and characters. I would recommend this version for hardcore fans only.

An Oral History (Not like the film)

It wasn't until I'd seen the film and read the reviews of how much it deviated from the original novel that I decided to take the plunge. If you're looking for a 'kicking zombie ass' post-apocalyptic action thriller, don't buy this.

If, on the other hand, you're interested in just how craftily speculative fiction can be employed to critique modern society, this is a masterpiece.

Amazing.

What did you love best about World War Z?

World War Z felt realistic as much as a fictional world with zombie in it can be. After reading the Zombie Survival Guide, these short stories really captured the urgency and seriousness of a wide spread plague epidemic rather than a gung-ho kid's wet dream. Don't get me wrong those are fun but the seriousness and tragedy of these stories made me care about these people.

What did you like best about this story?

Its format was really enjoyable and I can listen to any part just by itself. Since it is mostly made up of short stories, I can just play back the story I was listening to or just let it finish and start a new chunk.

What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

The accents. It made the apocalypse feel like it just wasn't isolated in America.

Nice Pre to the Mech saga

Nice short starter story, with cool Sci-fi. It should have been longer, but we'll see how Mech 1-4 is.B V Larson writes good books so far.

A good short story

Interesting enough to make me look up book two. There is only so much you can do in a short story, but I have fingers crossed that then next book is as good. (and a little longer)

No hero's here

This short story is the prequel to the Mech series. This story can be skipped. The narrator simply reads and he is clearly no actor. His reading skills are somewhat mechanical.

The story has no heroes at all but a series of bumbling and arrogant fools who stumble into a positive outcome. I listened to the entire story. it is not worth paying for.

Easily entertained

What does Mirron Willis bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

I'm pretty sure I could have done a better job, but hopefully he did better when he recorded the other books of the series.

I bought this purely to see if I'd be interested in this story, and, as the headline says, I'm easily entertained, so I will be giving the series a chance. A reviewer of Mech 1 said that it needed a prologue, well this is it. The story, while not the best I've ever listened to - even just in this catagory - is still good enough for cheap enough that I feel this is a good introduction to a series.I'd be willing to give a chance to. My only real complaint is the narrator who sounds like he phoned in the performance, that is to say that it was very robotic and took some getting used to. More objectively the ratings should be:Overall: 4 starsPerformance: 3 starsStory: 4 starsbut I bumped my rating with hopes that the problems I had with this first installment might not be present in the full length novels, and, as previously stated, I am easily entertained.

Man! Epic book 3.

I feel like this book could almost stand on its own. I really liked this story, quite a few things from the previous books get tied together. The aliens are even nastier if that's possible.

Nice end to a good saga

Mech 3 is the end of this saga. It has some realy good parts to it. It also has a cool end!

Narration was distracting

The story was typical BV Larson and entertaining enough. However, the narration on this book (and the other two books in the series) has a multitude of mispronounced words throughout which I find very distracting. The first two books were not as bad as this one...but after finishing this book, I had to call out the distracting nature of the mispronunciations in this narration. Some examples include: "acuator" instead of "actuator"....."silver" instead of "sliver"...there were many more such mis-reads that changed the meaning of some of the sentences. He pronounced "cache" computer memory as "cash-ay". Computer cache memory is actually pronounced "cash". Other mispronunciations include "strenth" instead of "strength", "hants" instead of "hints", "chassises" (plural) instead of "chassis" (singular), "brazingly" instead of "brazenly", etc. There were many other examples throughout the book.

Also, compared to the narration of Mark Boyett (narrator of other BV Larson books), this recording is harder to understand and has a strange tone to it as if the narrator is talking to me through a long tube.

On a positive note, the narrator's performance of character voices was very well done. However, the mispronunciations and poor tone (EQ) of the recording only allow 2 stars for the narration performance.

A thoughtful, gothic sci-fi debut

This is George RR Martins earliest novel, and I daresay it anticipates A Game of Thrones in a few ways. The notable difference is that its science fiction instead of fantasy. Regardless of genre, though, Martin has always had a talent for imaginative world-building, for conveying a sense of universes that are very old, full of history, and home to many other stories besides the immediate one.

The setting here is cool and gothic, a rogue planet named Worlorn which had a brief heyday as a sort of exhibition world for the neighboring star systems, which terraformed it and built showcase cities on it as it passed by a cluster of stars called Fat Satan and the Hellcrown (great names). Now winter is coming forever, as the mostly abandoned Worlorn heads back into deep space.

The story concerns a man named Dirk, who receives an object of significance in the space mail from an ex-girlfriend hes still sorta pining for. Gwen is on Worlorn, studying the unique ecology. When he gets there, he discovers that shes sorta married to a man named Jaantony from a planet called Kavalaan. And to Jaantonys bondsman as well. Gwen cares for her primary mate, but isnt totally happy with her life. As it turns out, Kavalar society has a feudal past, very unfeminist values, a strong code of honor, and complex social rules left from its dark history. An offshoot colony has come to Worlorn in (seemingly futile) hopes of keeping its culture alive against the forces of modernization. Of course, Dirks arrival upsets the already uneasy relationship between three people, and he soon runs afoul of an even-more-traditional group of Kavalar, which has a very xenophobic view of outsiders.

each book in the series becomes both shorter & more predictable

this will be the last 'sequence' for me.

book 2 in the 3rd sequence

this is just sorta a mini review because the full review is in the first book of the sequence so go there and read that if you are reading this.

As these books are sorta 1 book per sequence just split up into 3 books they are sorta different but all end with cliff hangers so if you start a sequence you want to finish it.

The series keeps getting better...

The story leaves off right where the previous book ended. Our hero returns to earth with his bodyguards, the dowager, and the young heir to turmoil and revolt in the Atevi government. Plenty of intrigue and suspense. I continue to enjoy the story, which not only is well narrated, it is extremely well written. The characters are reasonably complex and continue to evolve over time. Seeing the young heir apparent mature well beyond his years but still showing his tender age is especially well done. The humorous moments are quite entertaining, especially those surrounding the "young master" or the heir. As I've said in earlier books in this series, it keeps getting better.

Maybe my favorite ending of the series

Bren at his most fun, second guessing himself, coming through on conjecture and canyness. Maybe my favorite ending of the series.

Several reviews I read before downloading this book indicated it as not well done, this is not the case. An easy to follow and well done addition to the Theo Waitley series. Hope to hear more.

disappointed at word slips/verbal typos.

I love the Korval novels. no exception here.

There are several word slips that I noticed.

Whenever I heard a slip, I wondered why the reader wasn't permitted to correct the error. And then I would hear another clumsy splice-in.

Rather distracting. I kept thinking "rush job."

More great Liaden adventure

Theo Waitley and her self-aware ship Bechimo now have a contract with Clan Korval to explore a possible new long-loop trade route, unconnected to previous Korval routes that included Liad. She's got her first crew member, pilot Clarence O'Berin. And she and Bechimo are feeling out the delicate matter of whether he and Theo really want to enter into the symbiosis that would make Theo not acting captain but bonded captain.

So we know things are way too peaceful and some real excitement is going to come along and smack them all.

The world of Eylot, where Theo attended Anlingdon Piloting Academy, has continued to grow more and more insular in the few years since Theo was kickedGui out after being declared a "nexus of violence." Now they're trying to declare all piloting licenses not issued on Eylot invalid, and to seize control of the Guild-run Codrescu Station. Since Eylot authorities have made clear their intention to "make examples" of pilots not trained at Anlingdon and even the Anlingdon-trained who have been too friendly with the offworlders, no one is eager to comply. The Guild declares a "Pilots in Peril" emergency--and Theo and Bechimo are the first to arrive.

Meanwhile, Kamele Waitley is sufficiently alarmed by Jen Sar Kiladi's disappearance and what little information that Theo has sent her about him.

Interesting story

Personally I like the narrator, the story does have some slow periods but overall very entertaining. Love the Liaden universe and it's cast of characters
