    Not sure WHAT happened!
I expected book Two to get much better as the author got a little seasoning behind him, since I enjoyed Book 1 (BOTH book 1's).. Especially since I LOVE the "Mech Suit" genre, and there's not a lot of it around... But 'the good stuff' in the book seemed to me to be greatly off-set by a LOT more... I dunno.. "Whining, Crying, Over-Rousing Motivation Gut Speeches"? Usually followed by 'utter crying despair', 'giving up', more 'Over-Rousing Self-Motivating Speeches', 'deciding to soldier on'... "Wash, Rinse, Repeat"... Also a LOT of doing A LOT without "accomplishing" anything at all, after all is said and done, except constantly 'vowing vengeance' and 'vowing lots of payback and rivers of blood', but always "at some future time".
I (like many others it seems) got tired FAST of being beat over the head by "Brotherhood".. WAY too much 'Brother', 'you're my brother', 'where are my brothers', 'because we're brothers', 'brother this', 'brother that', 'my brothers', etc. etc. etc. I joined the Army as an Infantry Soldier "Back in the day" (I Retired from the Army, and THEN became an Electrical Engineer and Computer Programmer), I understand the close camaraderie of units (ESPECIALLY 'Small Specialized Units')... I've noticed authors who really know about it, always find a way to SHOW IT in their books, without ever ONCE having to resort to 'saying it' (especially not every 5 minutes!). *I* wouldn't write a whole paragraph about THAT issue alone, had it not been THAT massively over-used in the book.
I also feel like there was "a lot of action and disjointed moving around, for no apparent reason, and NOTHING accomplished by all of the action and movement"... A LOT of effort seemed to be expended again and again, for NO apparent gain, and the plot for the Series didn't seem to be "moved along" AT ALL by anything that was done...

    Publisher's Summary:
The Visitors, the fifth book in the 299 Days series, follows Grant Matson, the Team, and other Pierce Point residents as they adjust to a rapidly changing post-Collapse reality. When the Team is summoned to bust a meth lab and protect their neighbors, they find themselves in an intense crime scene that results in the community having to decide innocence, guilt, and punishment. Adjusting to this new normal is a challenge to Grant and others as they navigate a world where Pop-Tarts cost $45 a box, neighbors die from easily preventable conditions, and what remains of the former U.S. Government is deliberately choosing who they will and will not help.
As tensions grow in Pierce Point and the Team begins to face organized opposition, they are presented with an incredible opportunity by the arrival of Special Forces Ted and his game-changing proposal. Grant finds himself at a crossroads as he must decide whether he and the Team will formally join the Patriots and train to become guerilla fighters against the growing forces of the Loyalists or standby and watch events unfold. Grant knows one decision could risk his marriage and family, while another would mean letting others decide their fate.

Awfully expensive for a few chapters of a book.
The story is interesting, but has been broken down into many dime store novels. I would like to hear the rest, but I have already payed more than double what I have paid for other books, many in the 30 hour range.
5th book? And you are still reading?
I finished book 9 a couple of weeks ago. I've listened to a couple of more books by my favorite author to find a comparison to what I like. This is my complete review of the entire series.
The first book was good, it was about prepping. The detail seemed well thought out and planned. Told a good story and the reader I think was the perfect voice for the main character "Grant Matson".
The book has a very distinct line drawn in the sand between the two political parties. Liberals and Conservatives, and for general purposes that is fine. This is suppose to be about people and the author even says that he wanted to write a book about a true depiction of what a partial collapse would be like. The author did a state that there are more people who tend to just fall in line with what ever is popular in the political sense, but it stops there and puts most people in the dumb and liberal category.
An example of this is gun control. You will always have the hardliners of either side that will probably represent about 20% of the population will be very liberal, and 20% of the population will be very conservative about gun control. Where as 60% of the population will more or less be swayed one way or the other based on their own personal experience with the issue, but are not hard lined based on principles.
The author takes a stance that the majority of the population are under the impression that a gun will just go off by looking at it. Maybe that is the way that it is in the state of Washington, but I've lived in a multitude of states and haven't found that to be the case in the general public.
The first book was good enough that it kept me interested, but that is all it really did. I spend a lot of time traveling across my state and it gives me a lot of time to listen to books.

    Adrian delivers again!
This series did a great job at measuring out emotional responses from the listener. It seemed a perfect balance of tension and humour. Honestly I had snot coming out of me a uncontrolled fashion when I heard the shot in the bum story toward the end! The way in which the characters are intertwined with each other and the rest of the story is very enjoyable.
I dont really need to comment on the plot because this is the third in the series; you wouldnt start at number three, would you? So I shall keep my comments to the actual delivery of the story: The narrator again does an excellent job bringing the characters to life. The speed of narration was great. I normally speed up the narration to 1.5x or more but this one was perfect at 1.25x
Most of the way through this story I thought this is good, probably the best of the series. But then I got to the end and I was blown away! The ending took me completely by surprise. I wont give away any plot, but I wonder what the author is going to do if there is another book in the series? I know I will certainly be buying it.

Not Sure WHAT To Think Really...
I'm not really sure WHAT to think about this book... I like most of what Drake writes, but this one feels a little disjointed and outright strange at times. I was left with the impression that someone had just finished a Cruise in the Caribbean, and tried to turn it into small collection of Mini-Stories set as a Sci-Fi Space-Opera... kinda left with the feeling that each different 'Island' visited on the Caribbean Cruise got turned into a different 'Planet' to make up a few Mini-Sci-Fi Stories that are kinda strung together as a whole...
Upon reflection, I got the impression of a Cruise Line Purser who suddenly turns into some sort of secret deadly agent at times. Some of the 'Mini-Stories' that make up the book don't seem to go anywhere, and the Characters that make up those mini-stories just vanish from the book with no explanations given...
I would think "Well, THAT Explains It" if someone said David had gone on a 7 day Caribbean Cruise and turned it into a set of Space Sci-Fi Stories to write the cost off as a business expense... I doubt that's the case, but that's just the"After-Impression" I have.
    The Empress of Earth
What made the experience of listening to Starliner the most enjoyable?
I had read the book and found the tale light and very enjoyable. I quite possible would have enjoyed the audio book more if I hadn't. I find it interesting to see how different books can be simple based on change in readers.
Who was your favorite character and why?
While I liked Rand Coville ( main character) my favorite was Wade, an older felllw with great stories and fingers in every pie.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Aaron Abano?
It would really depend on the story, I came away some what ambivalent as it was a quite different experience and tale from reading it myself and I had read it a couple of times.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Not really, for Scifi it's light reading. Consequently it's easy to pick up and read in little bites without losing content or enjoyment
    Any additional comments?
This is actually my favorite David Drake book. I wxpect this had more to do with my so so enjoyment. It's still a great story an easy read or listen and well worth taking the time.

    Interesting monster, inadequate protagonists
    Any additional comments?
I enjoy Lovecraft and think that books using his primordial, uncaring monsters in a modern setting is a great idea. But to enjoy Beck's books about Alex Hunter, liking Lovecraft is not enough. Hunter and his cohorts are taken from more mainstream, American light action fiction, with flexing muscles, contempt for "thinkers" and oneliners about what "must be done". For me, it is extremely frustrating to read how this Hunter exposes his team to risks because he doesn't think things through (and probably because the author needs some nice action scenes).
So if you like Lovecraft AND muscle-packed American soldiers running around saving the day - despite refusing to stop and think - you will love Beck's books. If you enjoy Lovecraft, but prefer his Victorian-style, thinking, although verging-on-the-insane protagonists, you will probably be disappointed. I am a bit surprised about the praise this book gets on Amazon. I guess more people fit the first category than I thought.
I should add that the Gorgon monster is interesting and menacing and that the opening scenes of the book are great. It's when the Americans take over that Beck looses me...
Determination alone is making me get thru this...
    Any additional comments?
I am determined to finish this one..it is taking every ounce of will power I have to focus on it and that's unexpected after listening to 3 of the books in this series. I have been enthralled at finding you (I will do 2 soon, but I don't think I missed out on much by not reading it from all indications - unless of course there's a lot of Sam in there...love that Sam). I'm not sure if it's the subject or just the fact that it's just not up to par with the ones before it. I really like Sean reading your books..he may be the saving grace for this book too.
I haven't decided yet if I am returning it or not, but I may yet. I will purchase 6 and keep hoping that the series keeps going in a more positive direction as they are addicting characters.

    Oh Alight, It's A Keeper
I really don't know what made me start this series. I kept saying, okay, I will purchase just one more episode. I guess it's time I have to admit that it does have a certain something.
Unlike most end-of-the-world-zombie-gut-slinging- gore on every page novels, Yesterday's Gone doesn't use that violent drama as the foundation for the storyline. It doesn't hide from violence and blowing blood and guts everywhere, but it does play distant second to the role of relationships and the underlying mystery that makes this book readable.
I have purchased episode 5, so I can no longer say I'm trying it out. It is true, I want to see what happens next. I'm still listening.
    Entertaining enough to keep going..
Entertaining, clear distinct characters, some narrators have better range than others as far as depicting different characters however overall it's well done and the story continues to lead you on with suspense/ mystery. a bit like The Stand with a splash of War of the Worlds.
    interesting
it's a different look at post apocalyptic life after a bizarre form of the apocalypse
    definitely worth a listen
I have enjoyed all the episodes so far, the narrations do a great job, about to start the next one now, I recommended giving at least the first episode a try.
    What happened???
All of a sudden, the book just ended, unexpectedly. I had been listening, and waiting for "something" to happen.... Seems like this episode was a bit of a filler. I had to look when it ended to make sure it wasn't just the end of a chapter... I will continue with the next installment, and see where this story goes.

    what's happening
please tell me what's going on, I'm totally confuse. This story needs clarity. Way too many cliff hangers
I'd say, "A Must Read," but that's to cliche.
I have to admit, I've never read a serial book, but I'm glad I have! It's an unconventional story where the sci-fi aspect is closer to the present then the future, and could easily be labeled a mystery or thriller. The characters aren't just something to fill the story, but are the story! Clearly three dimensional, and easy to care about! The story isn't the zombie or "rapture" crap we've been assailed with, and enough twists and turns to make you dizzy! Well, I'm on to season 2, and so more beer battered...you know!
    Absolutely awful!
What disappointed you about Yesterday's Gone: Season 1 - Episode 6?
This was absolutely horrid! The other episodes were good enough that I could ignore the increasingly bad voices, they kept you on the edge of your seat and spread the bad out so it didn't overwhelm the story.
Now I normally scoff at reviews that hate books because bad things happen in them, but there is such a thing as too much. If you save up every bad thing for a single piece of the story, only the bad is going to matter, nothing else. And in an episode where a dog is torn to shreds and a serial killer and rapist are shown in all their depraved glory time upon time, I have been completely turned away from this series.
    Season 2 here I come!
Just remember buying the whole season at once will cost you twice as much! Hopefully Audible fixes that soon.
    Awesome
Awesome, suspenseful book that keeps you on your toes. I am looking forward to the other seasons.

Started out with promise but took unusual twist
I was given the Audible credit in return for an honest review, so here goes. To me, the story started out promising, with the main character living on the streets, having escaped the planet of his birth during an alien invasion, and escaping to a warship, where he is accepted into the academy which trains into future officers. Sounds like a rags to riches Ender's Game, and reads that way too, which isn't a bad thing. He becomes a successful pilot, and all around kick ass soldier. He does have a LOT of drama in his love life, more than I would have expected, but I was OK with it. Then the story takes a turn for the weird, when Rafian and his current Lady are recruited by the Network, which is a shadowy spy organization that is not mentioned once in the book until they got their invitations, which I thought was jarring. The training was reprehensible, where the students are basically forced to have sex with each other on pain of death, to learn not to form attachments of feeling with sex, and they are trained to kill, back stab and manipulate others. They are then sent on their first missions, to earn the right to gain the basic rank of Person. Before that, though, they are mindwiped to forget their memories of self, retaining only technical knowledge. Rafian is dumped in a universe where he is to join a rebellion and overthrow the government. He does this, while also falling for a Noble Lady Soldier, who he marries. He returns to the order after being gone for 3 years, only regaining his memories at the last minute. he then has to resolve the conflict between himself, his now wife, and the other woman he loves. Plus, all the other women he is going to keep having sex with. The last part of the book involved them taking back their home planet from the invading aliens. It felt rushed at the end, as if the storyline was jammed in place to fit regardless. Rafian's ability to rationalize having sex with all these different women, while his wife was raised to believe in a monogamous culture, was really jarring and really made me think of him as an unlikable jerk in that respect. It was overall an ok read, with some good bits in the combat scenes, buit the personal interactions and drama were offputting. I won't recommend against reading it, but it doesn't seem like a book that will be getting a re-read. The narrator was mediocre, being a bit monotoned, with a lot of background noise during her reading. She does not have much variety in her voice for different characters, so overall, 3 stars.
    Decent Sci Fi
Hello, I received a copy of this audiobook in exchange for a fair and honest review. So this book started out great, telling the story of an orphan who stows away on ship, only to be found and then subsequently trained.

    Publisher's Summary:
Science fiction masters Larry Niven (Ringworld) and Gregory Benford (Timescape) continue the thrilling adventure of a human expedition to another star system that is jeopardized by an encounter with an astonishingly immense artifact in interstellar space: a bowl-shaped structure cupping a star, with a habitable area equivalent to many millions of Earths. And which, tantalizingly, is on a direct path heading toward the same system the human ship is to colonize.
Investigating the Bowl, or Shipstar, the human explorers are separated - one group captured by the gigantic structures alien inhabitants, the other pursued across its strange and dangerous landscape - while the mystery of the Shipstars origins and purpose propel the human voyagers toward discoveries that transform their understanding of their place in the universe.
    Members Reviews:
I loved it, Great hard science fiction,
Wonderful story, that kept me wanting to know what was next. Smart concepts, that have a lot of thought behind them, running through the story in a way that builds a world, and shows you it to you through storytelling. This is a clever and interesting hard science fiction adventure.
    kind of meh
Narrator is boring. Story is boring, hard to care about the characters. Drones on a bit.
    Bound for glory
What's next? I hope a trilogy is on the way. I will be impatiently waiting.
Should have been titled "Falling Star"
What did you like best about Shipstar? What did you like least?
Poor descriptions of action and inadequate character development made it difficult for me to maintain an interest in the storyline.
Has Shipstar turned you off from other books in this genre?
Shipstar did not turn me off to this genre, nor did it turn me off to Larry Niven or Gregory Benford. Not every story can be a homerun, but this story had a difficulty making it to first base.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The last chapter, where the human crew were deciding who would stay and who would go on the mission.
Was Shipstar worth the listening time?
I probably would not have listened to Shipstar had I known how poor the quality; I was ready to move on to another book after 2 hours.
Not the Niven I loved through by youth
    What disappointed you about Shipstar?
The first book was bad, this one was worse, Very boring
Would you ever listen to anything by Gregory Benford and Larry Niven again?
Yes, Niven is one of my all time favorites, Benford is not on the same level but still one I like to read, but I can't finish this book, I keep losing track of what is going on
How could the performance have been better?
Take out a lot of the touchy feelly stuff, if I wanted that I would be reading a different type of book
    Any additional comments?
While the narrator is far better than I could ever be, I think someone else may have helped the story along
