Not memorable

This is a somewhat bland tale of friendship between two eighth graders that I doubt I would have finished had I not been listening to it on audio. It wasn't bad, just one those "meh" reads. Chris and Jack have been inseparable ever since their first meeting in the first grade. Jack is from "the right side of the tracks" but never fit in with the snotty country club set, while Chris is a girl who lives with her dad in a cozy apartment above a hair salon. This apparently means she's "from the wrong side of the tracks" as she states just like an old fogie at some point in the book. Maybe it's just me or the kids I know, but when I spout out some old fart saying like that, I'm called out on it and they always look at me like I'm some oddity so hearing these kids talk like older folks pulled me out of the book more than a time or two.

Chris and Jack are growing up and Jack is starting to have issues with Chris's legs and the fact that so many guys are now noticing them. He fears losing her friendship and is having a difficult time seeing her with other guys and reacts with emotion, causing a rift between them. Making matters worse, Jack's parents have just separated and he fears his dad is having an affair. The story follows a few months in Jack's mildly tumultuous life as he sorts through all of these changes. If you toss away the old speak, it's all realistic but not earth shattering stuff to get all excited about. My own childhood at this age was much more traumatic so I'm probably not being fair to this novel. If you're really bored and looking for a mild tale about friendship you may love it.

This Book is a Must-Read

This is a believable, funny, all-too-true story of Jack and Chris, a boy-girl pair of best friends. But are they just best friends? Jack begins to wonder that summber between eighth grade and high school, when he begins to notice Chris in a whole new light. Chris is suddenly not just muddy, messy, tomboy Chris-- she's beautiful and popular with boys, and Jack is jealous, even as he's drenched with attention from Popular Girl Emily. When it's time for the Country Club Cotillion and Jack shares a dance with Chris, will she be able to accept that her best friend now sees her as a GIRL? Maybe. Well, she can until Jack kisses her... then she shows that she may be a girl, but she sure ain't a feminine flower!

Must read for 4th grade.

I used this book as part of a 4th grade unit I taught. It is funny, sweet, addresses bullying issues and has a feel good, happy,. unexpected ending. Must buy. I think girls liked it more than the boys.

Taylor loves It!!!

Marrying Malcom Mugatroyd is a fiction novel written by Mame Farrell. Once I started reading, I got hooked. It's about a sweet, young girl, named Hannah, and basically her life. It's a must read book.

Hannah is a 6th grade girl trying to fit in. She is embarresed of the fact that her family is best friends with the school nerd, Malcom. She is acually promised to him!!! He is teased and made fun of almost every day by almost every body. She finds her self sticking up for him because of the fact that he is her brother's, Ian, best and only friend. Ian has a tough life because of his muscular dystrophy. Which means he rolls around his his wheel chair. Hannah goes through some hard and some funny times. Including her first boy-girl party, Ian being rushed to the hospital, holding hands with her dream boy, plus all the normal things teenagers worry about. She just hopes nobody finds out about her secret and embarresing life with Malcom.

Even though it's a fiction book, I could easily relate to it. The characters were all very well known and very beilievable.

This story is a funny, make you smile, make you cry kind of book. Even her friends admit that "Hannah is just a nice person." I loved it.

great book

This book is about the popular girl Hannah Billings. She is just the girl who wants to be liked and popular everything that Malcolm Murgatroyd is not. He is basically a person who does not fit in. He is bad at sports, carries around a stuffed- animal, and many embarrassing things. But Hanna's parents, and his parents have been friends like forever, and Hannah has grown up with Malcolm, but no one else knows this. This is her secret, and she tries to keep it while writing her autobiography, but of course this is hard. Hannah has a brother named Ian, and he has Muscular Dystrophy, and he is in a wheel-chair. The condition is a big struggle for her to face, but Malcolm always makes Ian feel better. Malcolm just is different, he is special.

deep historical book for upper middle grades or teens

This was an interesting novel in many ways. The story has several main characters. We begin with Mr. Baggot, the tithing man who enjoys disciplining his fellow citizens and their children, who looks down on others, and who hates Indians; we follow Baggot to the Currie household, where a kindly printer and his large jolly family have taken in William, a Narraganset Indian orphaned by recent hostilities between his people and the colonists. We follow William in his work until he tends to the shop's visitor, a self-important wigmaker and his constantly-on-the-make servant Malcolm. Then we follow Malcolm until he meets someone that we follow next. I really liked the smooth flow that this structure brought to the book. The author is a fine writer, explaining painlessly what life might have been like in colonial Boston. There is also humor throughout due to the antics of Malcolm, and this really helps sell a historical novel to a modern kid. The story of William is especially compelling, and terrific material for discussions of the relations between Europeans and Native Americans in 1681. Fine writing, compelling story, this is an excellent historical novel for read aloud or teens.

Better than expected

I was mainly looking for some shorter books for some of my students who aren't great readers when I bought this book. I had really liked Whirligig, by this author, so I wanted to see some of his other work. It's really a nice little book, better than the review indicated. It's a quick read and all of my students who read it liked it very much.

Atmospheric read

This slim volume is a good historical fiction glimpse for young adults. It tells the story of William, a young Narraganset Indian who was captured in King Philip's war, and now serves a printer in Boston, where he is treated kindly and learns to study books and English ways. By day he is English, and by night William sneaks out and scours the December streets looking for his lost Indian brother.

Great Adventure for Both Kids and Adults

Gladius and Elle are on their way home after the Bartlett Trial. But when they get to their homes they find them burned down and her family missing. There is something strange going on and with a clue from an old map Gladius, Elle, and Henry decide to go to the Sea of Lost Souls to rescue their families.

Although the synopsis is short, donât let that discourage you. There is a lot of action, adventure, and mysterious creatures that the kids run into. I started reading and had a hard time putting it down just so I could get a couple hours of sleep. I just couldnât wait to see what the kids ran across next.

This would be a great book for mid grade readers or anyone that likes the Percy Jackson series.

Action filled adventure

This was a fun book to read. Great young adult book but also fun read for the adults too. Good story line.

Even better!

I believe this style of writing is similar to Christopher Paolini and T.A. Barron. Fast Paced and well written, I read two books in this series and know this is a definite adventure book for boys. Girls will enjoy them as well, but the genre is fitting for reluctant boy readers. Great books!

Seeking Revenge or Social Justice?

This short book offers grim details based on authentic accounts of life in a textile millâfrom the viewpoint of a 15-year-old farm girl. Annie Steele dreams of attending school in order to become a teacher herself some day and thus earn her own keep (until she marries). Her older brother, George, sweats his days chopping wood to help pay off their fatherâs debts. Unfortunately the family will always be in debt because of Paâs extravagance and naive hope that he can make it rich by investing in some new scheme. It is his purchase of a clock (the works--not the case) which proves the catalyst which sets Annieâs despair in motion; she is contracted for six months in Col. Humphreysâ mill (an historical CT mill owner).

Not only must Annie sacrifice her educational goals, but she finds herself subjected to more than the slavery of child labor; the dishonest overseer soon casts his lecherous eyes on her. Good historical look at a girl's life

This is a great historical novel that shows you what a girl's life was like "way back when." Here is a smart, capable girl who is treated badly because, well, she is a girl. At first, no one listens to her complaints at the mill, especially not her dad, who has taken her out of school to work because he has gotten into debt buying unnecessary things. By the end of the story, she proves herself. But interesting to compare her opportunities to those of girls today. Well writtten; I like the Colliers' historical novels, as they teach you a lot about different times and places through kids' experiences.

The Clock is a bad thing!

The book The Clock by James Lincoln Collier was an excellent book, although there were some not so great parts with good detail. There was a lot of talking and traveling about the late 1800s to the early 1900s that became boring and uninteresting, however Mr. Collier still did a good job with the details.

Hawk Moon- A Will Lansa Mystery Series

Very boring! Don't waste your time. Will Lansa is a half breed teenager living part time on the Hopi reservation with his Hopi father who is the chief of police. Will try's to solve murder mysteries on the Hopi reservation. He thinks and acts like a typical teenager, thinks he's smarter than he is and knows everything. Just trying to get through this book was difficult because of all the stupid things he does, the way he acts and talks. The story is boring and slow. The father, chief of police should be solving the murders, but, no, Will thinks he's smart enough to do it, he gets too involved, gets into dangerous predicaments. The story line is childish and ridiculous. Had to force myself to finish it. Spare yourself the agony. Stay away from this series. There are better books out there.

Finally, a teen mystery with a male protagonist!

Will Lansa is not your typical high school football hero. He proves to be a sensitive young man who relies on his Hopi heritage to help him solve the murder of his girlfriend. This novel provided a good balance of teen problems regarding heritage, romance, drug abuse, and friendships. I would highly recommend that all of you kids who like a good suspenseful mystery read this one. (I am an English teacher, so I love recommending good reads!)

Fun read

This is a cut story. It does not as some other reviewer think, claim to be great literature, Tow boys on a bit of an adventure, Like all good adventures at the end they learn a little about themselves and each other. After a lot of the junk I've waded though over the last several years this was a cute refreshing read.

great adventure for boys 10-15

Great book for young people. I bought it for my grandson and he loved it

A cute story with no defined end

This story about two orphaned boys trying to find that lake full of gold and partnering with a con artist to survive is a cute premise for a story. The two boys Billy and Possum are constantly saving their partner the Professor from the next attack. The older man teaches the two boys about life but in the end are drawn into a murder.

There is much struggle here between good and evil. The boys, especially Possum, learn that life on one's own isn't all that great all the time, and that they need help from others to achieve their dream, but how quickly life can throw punches! The longer the two boys stay with the professor, the more trouble they seem to get into and the more Possum realizes this is not the life he wishes to lead.

This all is a nice coming-of-age for young boys, with that constant battle between good and evil, but the end to this book seems so uncertain.
