David's Journal

This book is a short story about David and his journey experiencing bullying and the crippling loss of his father. David takes you along through entries in his personal journal. Within itsâ pages, you find a loving, deeply emotional young man that feels he is alternatively ignored and tormented by bullies at school. Suicide is definitely an option for David, as he has tried many times. His journaling is stark and unembellished in a wonderfully honest way. He shows you the love he has for his family and the confliction within himself. He brings to light a striking reminder that bullying hurts. Bullying leaves lasting scars that are invisible and terribly hard to heal.

There is so much in this book that is thought provoking and would be a great way to start a discussion. It is nicely written and left me wanting to know more about David and his journey (2nd book? Please!). Nicely done, Mr. Woodruff.

Thought provoking!

This book takes you inside the mind of David, who is a victim of bullying. David takes you through his journal entries expressing emotions of depression, fear, anxiety, anger, loss, worthlessness, and loneliness. On numerous occasions, these feelings caused him to attempt suicide to escape the torture and to be with his father who recently passed away. I feel the author should have shared at least one bullying incident to emotionally connect readers to what David actually experienced. As a reader, I do feel sorry for David, but disconnected. In todays world, this has become so common and still gets overlook. I commend the author for sharing this short story and putting this before the masses as a short film. The subject matter needs international attention in hopes of positive change.

Awesome

This book is a must read for all Youths, Parents, Teachers, Mentors and Law Enforcement Officers who deal with Youths. I love this book because he takes you through is journey, and even though he experienced these things he still rationalized with the bullies. His feeling were real. I believe youth reading this will let them know that they are not the only one going through this and can see how he's dealing with it. This is truly an awareness.

Well written.

An intuitive look at bullying from the victim's perspective. I will recommend this to friends who are interested in this very serious problem.

Too Slow

too slow in the start of the book to grab my attention. I like the author though and have been very happy with some of his other titles.

Okay...I suppose

While I am forever a fan of Cusick's books, this one was a disappointment...

I had really hoped that this book would be good when I had bought it because I was under the impression that all, or most of her books, were outstanding. I had read Silent Stalker, Vampire, Fatal Secrets, and a few others before I picked up this book. These books were by far a few of her best, in my opinion and I was very anxious when I did bought this book. I couldn't wait to start it, but as I finished the book in a few hours, I wasn't completely satisfied...

Although the book in general was fine, the ending took me by complete surprise. Not because it was shocking and well thought out, but because it was so blatantly obvious and predictable -_-; I had suspected this character from the beginning and I was hoping that there would be some sort of twist because it seemed so obvious from the start of the events. I tried to convince myself that the ending would turn out as good as the rest of her books, but I was disappointed that everything that I had predicted actually happened.

Anyway, this is an okay book if you're reading one of Richie Tankersley Cusick's books for the first time, BUT if you're a devoted fan of her books, then you should avoid this book if you don't want to be disappointed. Although this book isn't her best, don't think that all of her books aren't good because many of her other books, such as Teacher's Pet, Vampire, Silent Stalker, Fatal Secrets, and The Mall are wonderful and have great plots and twist endings! ^_^

Fun stories for real life

To be perfectly honest, I am way WAY older than the target audience. Nevertheless, I found the message inspiring in a not-too-preachy kind of way. There is a lot of good advice, and lots of personal stories from the author's life, a great many of which involving his time as a Boy Scout. Many are laugh out loud funny, others just left me with a smile.

It is disconcerting for a book to point out that in all likelihood, you are already someone's hero (a younger sibling, a neighbor, or someone you might not even know). This observation was enough to get me thinking about the Hero Lessons, and wondering how I can improve my life. I think the youth who read this will enjoy it and will likely learn something about what it takes to be an exceptional person. A hero, in fact.

I am enjoying reading it!

Very interesting and touching to me. I also grew up in Compton and attended Roosevelt JHS as did Mr. Smith. In fact my mom's whole family attended Roosevelt and their last name just happened to be Smith. We are a upper middle class anglo family but shared many of the experiences and feelings described by Mr. Smith in this book!

Great for Male Readers!

I couldn't have picked up a better book to read as my summer winds down to lasting only a matter of hours. Shawn is in his summer before high school and Smith uses Shawn's keen awareness to the world around him take us on that voyage into manhood. Vivid colors are everywhere infecting Shawn's imaginings with splashes from the clear blue sky, fresh ripened fruits, Marisol's pants, water at the beach and the red and blue clothes he must never wear to remain safe while playing.

The cover is kind of a metaphor for the story, with the title hiding as a Chameleon in the red and blue of the story. It has a nice affect, but I think it led to the book missing its market. Not many books are written by PoC males for PoC YA males, so publishers probably haven't decided how to design an identifiable cover for this market. They didn't get it with the hardcover, but I think the paperback comes closer.

Shawn's days are pretty much filled with playing basketball with his friends. His aunt is supposed to watch him while his mom works but she's fighting her own demons. Shawn tries to understand her battles, and in doing so he's trying to grow up. After a particular incident occurs, Shawn has to decide where he's going to high school. His parents realize he's not a child anymore and I think they realize he's more aware of what he has to navigate than they are.

The language and musical references of the book place the story somewhere in the 70s but, the story is really timeless. A young boy growing up looks to older brothers, uncles and fathers for guidance. In Chameleon, Shawn has male characters who are often there to give a word of advice in ways that guys would give it: it's crude from the big brother and tough as nails from Pops.

A Charming Story of Young Love

Would you consider the audio edition of Beach Angel to be better than the print version?

Yes. I love the emotion and character given to these teens.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Beach Angel?

I loved both the surf competition and the final ball game. Great tales of competition for both sides of the relationship.

Which character as performed by Brian Rollins was your favorite?

Both the main teens. The narrator gives as much weight to her as she does to him.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The final confrontation with Chopper. Bullies are way too big a problem and I love that Summer Lee is tackling it.

Delightful little story that was fun and entertaining. I'm recommending to my nieces and nephews.

Excellent YA read

I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked up "Through the Paper Wall." It was a debut novel, but hey, it had a gorgeous cover and the author was meticulous enough to really work at editing and cleaning up the story before publication. It was evident that she took serious care in the creation of the novel and pride in her work.

When I started reading the book I was immediately impressed by the way her words brought life to her characters. They were well crafted and believable, their interactions natural. The story captures the frustration of a young adult who's life seems out of control and does a marvelous job of showing us how his feelings change as the book progresses.

This is a YA adult novel, and it is very family friendly. It is a little predictable and there are some loose plot threads, but for the target audience these fit and add to the overall story.

This book is certainly worth a read, especially if you are looking for some clean and enjoyable light reading.

Loved It!

I was not able to put this book down until I was done with it. Through the Paper Wall is a great imaginative story with good life lessons. There is a little something for everyone. I would highly recommend it. :)

"Through the Paper Wall" is a fantastic adventure story with wonderful characters and a plot that makes you think. Very imaginative, and the ending is perfect. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a clean fantasy for all ages. :)

Simply Amazing Read!

OH my, where to start. This book gives so much to the reader: The turmoil of everyday life, the pain of death, the suspense and thrill of endless adventure, the wonder of fantasy!

Geared towards YA, I was quite elated when I found that I couldn't put the book down until I finished it in one sitting. I'm 20! This author has put something into this book that even people my age and older can relate to. We've all felt familial pain, fought with a loved one, wanted something more from life.
