Hilarious story of a couple of kids whose lives turn from boring to adventure overnight.

A dream of adventure, a couple of kids, a dog, a cat, and the worlds most feared killer. When the kids inherit a fortune, a killer comes looking for them. The dreams turn into reality for Hector, while his sister and parents attempt to keep the family alive.

This story had me laughing out loud often. I found the adventures of this family outrageous for the most part, with enough fun for kids and adults to enjoy. While the parents learn to deal with a daydreamer, Hector learns a bit of self-control. While there are some spelling and grammar errors, such as "wondering" instead of "wandering", they did not detract from the reading. Some of the spelling is attributable to the translations from British English to American English.

I think P. A. Booth wrote this book to entertain children. It certainly entertained me, and I think my grandchildren would really enjoy this story.

I would recommend this book to preteens and teens that are able to read on their own. There are a couple of pages with violence, but most children will be able to understand the over-riding theme that violence should be avoided as much as possible. This story was so much fun to read, I will be looking for more by this author.

Hector Trogg is pretty much an ordinary young boy. He leads a pretty dull life but his daydreams are full of adventure and intrigue, something that is common to young boys I can tell you. But all that changes when Hector and his older sister Kate inherit a large sum of money. It begins with a narrowly escaped car bomb and just gets crazier from there. It is clear that someone wants to kill Hector and Kate to get at their money. Suddenly Hector finds all his extravagant daydreams coming to life, everything from an aerial dogfight to a tank battle to fighting off hordes of trained assassins. And all along the way Hector and Kate prevail, sometimes by accident and sometimes due to their own cleverness.

One of my favorite things about Hector Trogg's Perfect World was the way Booth portrayed the dog Bandit and the cat Otto, giving them thoughts and personalities of their own. For instance, when Bandit first met Kate and Hector he knew immediately that Kate would be the most vulnerable to his big brown eyes and that the sticky-looking Hector would probably be good to lick.

Should Be Required Reading!

This should be required reading, first in late middle school, then again in high school. And for the kids who don't like to read, it should be read to them, or at least supplied as an audio CD. The book is not only a page-turner, is not only really, really well written, but also has a fabulous, universal human message. I loved it!

Good read

Enjoyed this book, but not as much as First Impressions and the Bookman's Tale. These were great!

Rings True to the High School Theater Experience

I picked this book up to read on a long flight because the premise seemed intriguing. Though I don't really fit the target demographic, I was able to relate to the characters very well. Charlie Lovett does a great job of immersing the reader in the unique atmosphere of high school theater. Any current or former "theater geek" would enjoy "The Fat Lady Sings". Moreover, I'd be interested in a screen adaptation.

I look forward to reading other titles by this author. In fact, it would be interesting follow Aggie Stockdale and her friends as they begin their college experience. What say you, Mr. Lovett?

Sisters Get To Know Each Other

Charlie is dead set on going to Hollywood to enter a talent contest as well as see her old high school boyfriend; now a freshman at UCLA. Since her parents feel certain she's not to be trusted her younger sister is sent along to provide a responsible voice. Well Charlie isn't the type to listen to that type of voice; particularly if it emanates from her goody two shoes little sister. In addition they are to make a stop in Texas to visit their maternal grandparents on their ranch.

This becomes a time for closeness to grow between the sisters; but also a complication for Charlie's plan when both girls find romance with ranch hands during their short stay. When they reach California things do not go at all as planned for Charlie on the personal front and ironically furthers the strengthening of the relationship between the two sisters. Charlie and her girls do the show and Charlie demonstrates that she definitely has serious talent.

This was a good story about siblings, parental pressure, and the difficulties that teenagers face in transitioning to adulthood in today's economic climate. The only questionable thing about the story are the parental attitudes exhibited by Charlie and Lucy's parents.

They seem to be at least one generation if not removed from the parents I've known for the past twenty years; more like their parents or grandparents generation. Still it's a minor point and the most part this was an excellent book on teen girls. Plus the intransigence of the girl's father gave me licence to continually remind my daughter how good she had it. This one came close to earning five stars from me; enjoy it.

A book that will rock your pants off!

Filled with incredibly hilarious humour, real and loveable characters, and some serious full-on, knock-your-socks-off rocking, Rock God is one crazy and exhilarating read. Yes, it definitely rocked my face. And no, it wasn't painful, unless you count all the stomach cramps I got from the constant laugh fits it provoked! I loved it from the get-go. No joke. I've heard amazing things about this book even before I got my review copy. I knew it was going to be one fabulously enjoyable read (how could it not?! People were raving about it everywhere!). But what I didn't anticipate, is just how insanely fun, entertaining and totally absorbing it would turn out to be. It's a book that I literally couldn't put down.

Not that great

Deception Peak is a fantasy about a boy named Ian and his father Alex who stumble into a magical realm via a portal opened from their computer. Once there, they learn of a world terrorized by a dragon and populated by a group of Dragon worshippers, and another group (Kaemperns) who hate the dragon and the other people too.

First, the audiobook: Overall the narrator did a competent job, but I did not think he had a good voice for the story. His attempts to do female voices weren't particularly good either. And maybe I would have not hated Alex as much if I had read his words instead of listened to his constantly condescending voice? But the worst was when the book broke out in song. These moments were just terrible, completely ripping you from the story and forcing you to sit and listen to a woman sing for minutes at a time with the story going nowhere. And after listening to the entire book, I still don't know who this singer is supposed to be...the wind? the dragon? the fates? some spirit or god?

Now on to the story... I realize this book is for very young YA (age 11 or so), but I am still judging it by its quality. And for that, I would say it is pretty mediocre. This is a classic fantasy where a boy gets thrown into another world and grows, etc. before coming home. This story follows that formula, but the execution is horrible. First off, there is a magic portal caused by their video game programming and it is controlled by a TV remote. I would have had a better time suspending my belief it was completely magic and did not involve a computer and a TV remote. Once in this world, Ian is the voice of reason, while Alex is a completely wreckless idiot. Of course Alex just spends his time telling Ian to not be such a wuss. I feel sorry for Ian here having a father like that. And then... Ian has to spend the entire book trying to rescue his father from his own stupidity.

Furthermore, Ian has little to no character growth here. He stumbles through the novel complaining and whining continuously until he meets the Kaemperns, who rescue him and his father while suffering great loss. Ultimately out of all of the characters in the book, they are all pretty despicable and I didn't care about a single one except the Kaemperns, who didn't show up until near the end (not counting the introduction). Also, his father definitely has no growth except his thinking that maybe it was a bad idea to come there in the first place (duh!)

There is also no romance in this story. Ian initially travels with his friend Abby, who is afraid will tell his story to everyone.

Lacks the thrill of Earlier books in the series

This new Gaia doesn't have that edge that the old Gaia, street smart New York fits her like a glove kind of girl had. This new Gaia seems softer, hanging off of Jack like a fuzzy Koala Bear. And speaking of their relationship, though they are alike physically and somewhat mentally their relationship lacks the spark (or rather the bonfire) that was Gaia and Sam or the sweetness of Gaia's relationship with her best bud, ex skater rat-Ed.

Ed and Sam seem faraway from Gaia as is Pluto from the sun in these last few books. In the past books it was their relationship with Gaia that I though kept her from becoming complete cold and alienated and distrustful of humanity and now poof! They're gone. Now Gaia's basking in the Sun of a new Normal life but it's lacking the heat of Gaia's relationship's with these fine leading men. And just where the heck is Heather? I miss that girl!

Don't get me wrong, Jake's a great guy-I mean he caught a bullet for this girl! But I was skimming the pages because it didn't have the tension and intensity of the earlier novels. Now Gaia and Jake are like a scum butt kicking team which sounds great but it's actually kind of boring because they're so much alike in someways. Gaia doesn't need a twin! This Bobbsy(however the heck you spell it) twin team didn't keep my eyes speeding across the page like Run for example or Gaia Abducted. And Gaia just seems different. Of course she's naturally graceful and strong but now she seems like a sterotypical Jock and if there's one way to describe the earlier Gaia is that she couldn't be sterotyped-she was in a class by herself!

Gaia and Family

Book 30 and Gaia is still going strong. There are a few more influences from the Fearless TV show as we see Gaia beginning to work with a team (al la Buffy and the Scooby Gang). This time it is Gaia, her father Tom, uncle Oliver, and Jake who must band together and save the day from the man Natasha was working for. A little information given here is contradictory to that given in Gaia Abducted (thus placing the Super Edition outside the true storyline).

Gaia - Coming to terms with having a family and possibly a new boyfriend.

Jake - Still interested in Gaia and spy work although at times he is not sure he is ready for real spy work.

Tom - Must confront trouble from his past as well as reconcile with his brother.

Oliver - Trying desperately to atone for his past as Loki.

Natasha - Still in custody and maybe willing to talk.

Sam - Still in love with Gaia and thinks they still have a future.

Ed - Wondering at the incurability of Gaiabetes.

Loki - Probably gone but we don't know for sure.

Dimitri - We finally learn some of his secrets.

All this in only a little over 200 pages. A fast-paced and packed book that develops the series nicely. Some readers are beginning to miss Gaia the Loner but if the series is to proceed and develop, then Gaia has to do so as well.

Finally a little closure but...

FREAK finds Gaia trying to finally have a normal life, well as normal a life that a girl without the fear gene can have.

All Readers are "Young Adults"

Gary Paulsen has never hesitated to challenge his two audiences, the children for whom his books are written and the parents who buy and read them. Themes of abuse, alcoholism, emotional neglect, violence, and sexuality pop up even in Paulsen's fantasies of impossible adventure, such as his very popular Hatchet series.

Sisters/Hermanas, published as a bi-lingual novella, is an extremely serious, provocative, angry book. I've read all the previous reviews of it here on amazon and, to be honest, I'm suprised at how little controversy is expressed. Perhaps Paulsen readers are already a self-selected market. The two sisters of the title are a wealthy white girl and an impoverished Latina, both 14 years old. The Latina is a victim of both her poverty and her budding sexual attractiveness; she becomes a child prostitute. The white girl is being groomed by her ambitious mother as a style-and-beauty obsessed social parasite. Both girls are as much predators-in-the-making as victims of society's objectification of feminine beauty.

I very much doubt that most American parents would be comfortable with this book if they chose to read it before offering it to their daughters. It's a harsh, hostile depiction of femininity. Paulsen has shown a strain of misogyny in many of his books. His boy characters are all fun-loving rascals, sound at heart, but his girl characters tend to be alienating. This is his one huge failing as a writer. He has almost compulsively revealed something of his personal agony at having been a child abandoned by his mother. The 'mothers' in his books are straight out of the Brothers Grimm. Nevertheless, this is a powerful little book, as thought-provoking as any 'adult' book of the same scope. In all honesty, it's obviously written as a challenge to the sisterhood of privileged white girls to recognize their commonalities with the underprivileged brown girls, those who are unlikely to have parents who buy books for them or read to them.

fune ideas well written

Enjoyable characters, and interesting magic, but perhaps I'm too old to fully understand teenage angst and declarations of true love at sixteen

"Ima" lover of this book!

I have to give props to Rebekah and the easily enjoyable world she's created in My Dad's. It's not easy to pull off a main character by the name of Ima Berry, and she does it without seeming contrived.

This is the perfect just before bed reading. It's light, funny, and I've only read a handful of books where the author can write a hot guy as well as Rebekah. And let me tell ya, there's more than one in this entertaining paranormal romp. I don't mean harlequin hot either. I mean, the girl has some kind of mad talent at giving just enough detail to let your mind create the ultimate boy(s) for your main character to fall in love with.

It's not all mushy though, Ima is a tough girl with a dry wit and she's definitely worth the read.

I recommend My Dad's to anyone that enjoys an effortless paranormal YA.

"Seeking Shapeshifters" is a winning and entertaining YA novel which makes the paranormal seem logical and likely. Likeable protagonist Ima Blue Berry is a partner with her dad, a single parent, in Berry S.I.--Berry Special Investigations, an organization which tracks and studies paranormal events, and films the investigations for television. When they move to Point Hope, Alaska, hoping to find shapeshifters, Ima has to try anew to make friends at the high school, and this time, she finds her first ever boyfriend, Carsen. Of course, Carsen has secrets, and so do his cousins, Talon and Ferren.
