Have you listened to any of Al Benellis other performances before? How does this one compare?

I've heard nearly all of Al's narrations. I'm a fan of his stuff. This is somewhere in the middle. Not his best but not as bad as some caustic reviewers would have you believe. Remember, a narrators work needs to be approved by the author, so if something sounds misplaced to you... apparently the author didn't think so.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I'm not sure... but I did anyway... On a flight back from Rome... That's what audiobooks do best!

The story isn't bad, the production is.

The book starts out with maybe the most boring mob-hit scene I have every experienced in any media. Thankfully, this is followed up by our trendsetter protagonist, Dexter, getting hilariously denied entry into a restaurant he made famous and the story quickly brings the opening together as he plots his revenge using an obvious (to the reader) "mob restaurant." Naturally, this sets up a fair amount of excitement, as anyone can see that this is going to backfire, but how and how spectacularly is the question that makes you want to read more.

What follows is a Comedy of Errors style story, complete with slapstick and a lot of mistaken identities (which often gets the person killed). The story is at its best when it wanders into the realm of farce.

Dexter is your stereotypical egotistical character. There is the typical, for fiction, fawning woman who loves this man and will do anything for him, but he isn't into her at the start (although that plot point is resolved far too quickly). The mob guys are typical tropes for that genre. They are all trope characters, but nearly everyone of note in the story has enough individual characteristics to make them distinct from the base template they were pulled from.

It's not bad. There are some memorable moments. The characters are unique enough to hold interest. The plot is enjoyable, even if the story drags a little at times. It maybe trying too hard to be a "Made for TV" movie script, but that tone isn't enough to override the fun moments.

Now for narration and production: Al Benelli's gives a very mixed performance. He's ok for the main character, great at the "mob guys," and awful with anyone else. Especially female voices. I even at one point had trouble telling who was talking, as the voice used for Dexter got dropped for a couple lines. Also, I have never encountered so many post-production edits and filters as get used in this audiobook. Almost every time a filter kicks in it is jarring and badly done.

A funny and easily read book

This was a book easily read!! It presents the every day life of a bunch of over-55-year-olds in a retirement village somewhere in Australia. Different characters that try to cope with the retired life and end in funny incidents, that become even funnier since they annoy the management of the village.

The authors touch quite a few clichés and make them look funny. The husband who boasts about his cooking when it is really his wife is doing it, the law of Murphy proving itself, as the worse accident happens exactly in front of the inspecting authority and many others.

What makes the stories even more interesting is the sketches in the beginning of each chapter. In the beginning they give a hint of what the story is about, but in the end of each story I used to turn back and check them again.

A village full of colourful characters that will make you laugh.

Riotous Retirement is a load of short stories about a man living in a retirement home and his encounters with other members in the village. Brian's writing is clever, fully of wit and well leave you with a belly full of laughs. From sneaking into newly built villas with a muddy dog, to crazy car rides and interesting dips served on special occasions, Riotous Retirement is full of colourful characters to whom we can all relate.

I purchased a paperback copy directly from the author.

Riotous Retirement is Dead Set Funny

I must confess, I didn't buy Riotous Retirement for myself. I bought if as a gift for my father who lives in a retirement village. Yet, I found myself reading the book well into the night, and laughing aloud at the antics of the hapless residents. Helga, the 'Manager from Hell', runs Burnside Retirement Village. And the luckless Gabriel who recently moved in with his wife Brenda, muddle and shake things up.

Plans are hatched, A whole host of characters are set to entertain you, regardless of your age. Riotous Retirement is well written.

Fun and entertaining adventure!

I should first state that this is part two of the series and I have not listened to part one. So for me the story seemed to be already set in motion and I may have been missing some vital plot points.

Even though I missed part one I found it highly entertaining and very much love the way the author creates characters and twists in his plot.

Really the randomness of the story is incredibly appealing. I found myself both laughing and deeply engaged in the storyline. I also very much liked the narration. Great work on characters invoices.

If I was to have any suggestion for the author at all it would be to simply add a quick recap at the beginning for those who were unfortunate like me and came into the story on the second episode.

Overall very entertaining! I was given this audiobook free of charge in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.

What a Fun Story!

This installment of Benjamin Crosse is absolutely delightful. With his companion Figstick, Benjamin makes new friends (my favorite is Bob the vegetarian vampire), journeys to the land of Ooze to meet a wonderful wizard, encounters a dragon that farts fire, gets a magic staff and learns that he must defeat a powerful sorcerer. (Oops, perhaps I'm giving too many spoilers.) The story had me giggling constantly and the narrator did a super job bringing it to life. I especially liked all the allusions to L. Frank Baum's classic tale. The young Dora with her headless teddy bear Tofu was an especially nice touch. (Can't wait to see who or what she will eat in the next episode). Excellently written...just not long enough. I wanted more.

D & D style hilarity

Brought me back to my D&D days which were much more on the ridiculous side. From fire farting dragons to magic pepper this story delivers. I will have to go back and find the first installment and to seek the rest as they are released. Kept me well amused. A Quick Laugh

This was a short book that was great for a quick laugh. This is the second book in a new series, and I went into this without having heard the first book. This book drops you in the middle of a story, so I didnt get a good introduction or history of the characters. I felt like I missed out a little on the previous story, but because this was a comedy I was able to jump right into it. The comedy was good, and it got me chuckling several times. You can expect to get a smart-aleck response to pretty much everything. The narrator did a great job voicing all the characters and I felt the voices fit the characters really well.

Interesting Concept

The book took a mere 15 minutes to read. I will say it is an interesting concept of such a short story. Mixing Sherlock Holmes with the Beatles in one story brought back my memories from the 60's and reading all of the stories about Paul being dead. It appeared the author had done his homework on the Beatle history and he did a reasonable job of capturing both Sherlock's and Dr. Watson's personalities.
