Great Highlander Series - Modern Meets Medieval

This is book 2 in a series. Audible isn't showing the series properly and book 4 came out first and confused many buyers which is a shame as I'm sure that affected the love of these stories to unexpectedly plop late into the series, so the books come in this order.

This is a GREAT series, funny, serious, lots of twists and turns, and parts will make you cry. Love the books. AND the narration by David Monteath is PERFECT and frankly that alone is worth the listen. It's great to hear a Scottish man read for the male characters for a change as it really adds to those characters in an addictive sexy way. He's now one of my favorite "readers" (and I've heard many).

The books blend time travel, history, battles, humor, suspense, magick and romance (and some sex) in just the right blend. Each book picks up pretty much where the previous book leaves off and you'll want to go through the next all as soon as each one. It's more a tale of all these great characters, so it's a great family tale not just a romance based on "where can we insert plenty of sex scenes".

While some argue there's enough explanation in each to have them stand alone, since characters' histories and actions span multiple books, do yourself a favor and read them in order!!

Love these books, hope this series continues on and on....

Expected more

I enjoyed the beginning really exciting to hear that they went back in time but towards the end it got a little tedious. I did like the narrator this time through it showed more spunk and character for each individual character

Good first book in series.

This one kept my attention due to the Scottish Accent of the Narrator. While he wasn't great with the female accents he is excellent with the males. Great job! The story line was good. Not the greatest. Hope the next book is better. Not worried too much as the narrator is the same and I could listen to that all day.

How can anyone not love The Kents

Ive actually read & listened to The Kent Chronicles about a year ago when I rented them. I could no longer just have rented, so I purchased the entire 8 series last week, and each day I finish each book, already knowing the story. I adore John Jakes writing and The Lawless was no exception. This particular book was one of sadness, anger, forgiveness & bravery. Dont read just one, you have to read them all, each story is full of facts & fiction, but so wonderfully intertwined. Now Ill have each audible book & the written...Highly highly recommended 5+

There's a problem I can't ignore

I've held off saying this for quite some time - in the hope that there would be some change. But after 7 volumes in this series and all of North and South, this issue has become too disturbing not to say anything. And having just had yet another example of the problem in this novel I fell like I need to say something. Overall, i really enjoy these books, but John Jakes is clearly a creature of his time, and his time appears to be one in which the idea of homosexuality could only be represented as troubled, perverse, and nasty. Every single time someone who is either homosexual or bisexual appears in his novels they are cruel and vindictive individuals set on destroying the lives of the main characters, and represented as cruel and violent toward anyone unfortunate enough to be the object of their desires. It's an unfortunate distraction from an otherwise entertaining story. Maybe most people aren't disturbed by it, but for me as a gay man I find it unpleasantly disappointing, and it detracts from being able to just relax into the stories being told.

Can't wait for my Pre-order

What a treat to have a snack sized Joshilyn Jackson offering to introduce her newest loveably quirky southern family. As with all of her books, there is humor within the trials of life, and the solid strength that surprises not only the reader, but sometimes the characters themselves. Jackson has proved herself an astute observer of southern behavior and language to continually create characters that are not only believable, but ones I would love to befriend. Now I just have to wait 12 more days before I can get to know the rest of this story.

Amazing

This short story leaves no questions. What a pleasant little read. Well developed, defined characters are found in the prequel to Someone Else's Love Story. A young mom who finds herself a mother the moment she realizes that her brilliant son is hers to fight for and protect. A best friend who is every bit a father figure to a son who has no dna in common. A grandmother who has taken on the parenting of a grandchild until her daughter became his mother. Take a couple hours and get to know the Pearce family. You won't regret it.

Short story

I read My Own Miraculous after reading Someone Else's Love Story. I was just as much engaged with the characters here however the story was a little darker. Also I don't remember what happened in this book being at all mentioned in Love Story so at times it made it hard to believe these stories were meant to be together. What happened in this book should have definitely shaped the characters in the other book and I didn't totally get that from reading both books. I did have a hard time putting this one down and wanted to know what happened. Very engaging short story.

more literate than horror and solid

this is billed as an "oh my god" horror novel but it is not like that at all I don't think. it is well done and a lot more in it than i remembered from having read it years ago. If you're familiar at all with Fowle's The Magus, the film the Wicker Man, fertility rites, Burnt Offerings, greek myth and Eleusinian mysteries you will pick up on what's going on early on and for that reason it didn't surprise me nor shock me.

I like it very much for all those reasons (tidbits of lore and history etc.) and i think it is well researched as far as that goes. Joseph Campbell deals with a lot of fertility rites etc that have some shocking elements and I think that Tryon's overall "reconstruction" of a society of that type is very well thought out.

I can't rank it as highly as The Other as i feel there are some moments that needed to be redrawn as they got a bit unbelievable or cliche, and i think that it meanders a bit along the way to it's goal, whereas the Other didn't feel like there was anything extraneous in it.

Overall I'm glad i revisited it and found many things in it that i'd totally forgotten and it is better than i remembered. A friend liked this one better than Other. I think that with a little more pace, it could make for an excellent film if someone like HBO took the time to do a little mini series and cover all the important detail.

(i do think the narrator was fine but a little lackluster, some moments needing more emotion in a character's voice than he gave)

Thought Provoking Book

What made the experience of listening to Harvest Home the most enjoyable?

The different intonations of the characters by the reader. The characters were defined.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Harvest Home?

There were two parts - one involving Worthy Pettinger and the other involved Justin Hook. The detective work behind Gracie Everdeen was very interesting and kept me very interested in the story.

What does Jonathan Yen bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

He was able to read with a buildup to certain parts that kept me waiting for more.

Don't waste your time...

I found this book to be just plain silly. A woman in a psych hospital for the criminally insane is soooo dangerous the staff keep a cloth over her face. Since her crazy eyes freak them out the material covers her eyes as well. When she escapes no one knows what she looks like because they've kept her like that for 10 YEARS....

TOTALLY CONSUMING FROM START TO FINISH

What made the experience of listening to Bad Karma the most enjoyable?

Liz Thompson is an excellent narrator. To me, the narration is the key to any audible book, but especially one that is as expertly written as Bad Karma.

What other book might you compare Bad Karma to and why?

The book that comes to mind is Mind's Eye by Douglas Richards, because of the way the main characters could "read" others in an unnatural way. Very compelling and mezmerizing.

Which character as performed by Liz Thompson was your favorite?

I think my favorite character was the villain Agnes. Given her history, it wasn't surprising she turned out like she did. I could almost feel her pain.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It often made me visualize Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs, except she had a drape over her face instead of a mask.

Hats off to Douglas Clegg! This is the kind of story that makes time fly by unnoticed. Keep up the good work. And my heartfelt thanks for choosing an excellent Narrator. Too many writers don't and, as a result, good books are ruined with bad translation.

At Last - a Voice for Marty!

What did you love best about A Reason to Live?

I loved the book when I first read it - a crime fiction story with a twist. A retired cop, fighting cancer, re-opens an old case. I was so excited to find it an audio version finally. Mr. Sherr does a great job narrating the story - so now I have a voice for my mental vision of Marty Singer. (You might recognize his voice - he does narration for Modern Marvels and the History Channel.) The narration was well-paced and voiced.

Which scene was your favorite?

I loved the opening scene where Marty meets Amanda, and the scenes with Julie Atwater scenes are great.

If you like crime fiction, but are tired of the wrote whodunit, then try Marty Singer out.

This book was a distraction

What made the experience of listening to A Reason to Live the most enjoyable?

The character Marty Singer. He was so easy to connect with.

What did you like best about this story?

The pacing was great, with quieter scenes in between the action. Also, there is a pet cat that has no loyalty to Marty (the book is true to life).

What does Lloyd Sherr bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Lloyd Sherr was an excellent pick for this book. He owned the role and I cant imagine another voice for Marty. He also had distinctive voices for the other characters, including the ladies.

If you could rename A Reason to Live, what would you call it?

This book was a distraction. Dont tell my man, but dinner was late a few nights because I wanted to listen to this book instead of making a glorious meal (and I do enjoy cooking). Yeah. I liked it that much. Quite frankly, I got attached to Marty Singer. His character made the book for me. Hes got a cat, is a history buff, bit of a wise ass, and has a soft spot for people being stalked by killers. I wanted Marty to kick his cancer in the ass, catch the killer/stalker, and save the day. And he does, but the path is full of twists and turns. Marty had to be nimble to catch his man.

Amanda, a 20-something year old with one degree and working on a second while interning at the university, was the maiden in distress. As Marty was my favorite character, Amanda was my least. I really only have one criticism about this book, and it is how Amanda is portrayed. She lost her mother to a shooting as a kid, grew up in foster care, got a degree, has a job, and is working on a second degree. So why is she portrayed as a 16 year old kid half the time in the book? Other than being the object of desire for the stalker, she doesnt really bring anything to the story.

OK, enough on that. Enter Julie, the defense attorney who got the cop involved in the shooting of Brenda Lane off. Yeah. Now that the stalker/killer is back and leaving little flowers for Amanda, Marty starts digging through Brendas case.

The Perfect Historical Romance

Going into this book I didn't think it was possible to top "Surrender" (book 1 this series) but I was so wrong. "Untamed" was even better!

"Untamed" is a exciting American historical romance set near the Albany NY region. The story is intense, steamy, heartwarming and unpredictable. Usually I can predict where a story is going but this one kept me guessing the whole way through. The history within this book is compelling and the love scenes are exquisite.

The author has a wonderful way of making the reader feel comfortable and connected with each character in the story. Each person in the story is written with so much depth that they seem to have layers of personality. Yes, Morgan (the hero) is a fierce warrior and passionate lover but he also has weaknesses that are fully disclosed. Amalie (the heroine) is an endearing young lady direct from the Convent who's unconditional love and bravery is heartwarming.

Kaleo Griffith, the narrator, was exceptional. He has the perfect voice for this genre.

I am soooo pre-ordering the next book.

A lovely, powerful tale

This story grabbed me with the first word and held me til the last one. I laughed and held my breath and nearly cried, emotions that rarely occur inside one book. Oh, and then there was the sizzle that occurred between Morgan and Amalie. And let me just say that if I could choose one narrator to perform every book I listen to from now on it would be Kaleo Griffith. Simply superb, sir.

second time around and still a good listen

I have gone back and listened again to all of my Pamela Clare audio books. I love them all, all over again. I love the strong male characters and the strong woman that they love. The stories are only enhanced by the voice of Kaleo Griffith. Looking forward to many more of the talented pairing of Clare and Griffith.

A lot of history

Enjoyed the complicated situations that Morgan was involved. Seemed a very difficult way of life. As a work of fiction the method used to deliver the story caused you to have to remind yourself that it is not true history.

Frankly, enjoyed this book more than I thought I would.

MORE THAN JUST A GRIPPING HISTORICAL LOVE STORY

Pamela Clare whisks you away on an unpredictable historical adventure that's got intrigue, romance, humour, action, suspense and a handful of well developed likeable characters that bring so much depth and life to her stories. It's so well written that you get drawn into the intense plot straight away and spend your time mesmerised as you visualise each chapter's events in your head.

Best of the Series

I loved getting to know Mary Dell better and finding out about her roots and how she got started with quilting. Natalie Ross was such a great narrator, sometimes I thought there was really a man doing some of those voices. I didn't want the book to end and I really hope we can have more books about MD and her sweet, sweet Howard.

Great book in a great series!

I wasn't sure I wanted to read this book because it meant leaving New Bern and going to Texas, but I am glad I did. It was a very enjoyable story and it was heartwarming to learn Mary Del's story. It "sewed" up the story of her and Howard and how they came to be alone in the quilting business.

Grateful for another series

I've listened to all of the Cobble Court Quilts series, so I was delighted to find another series about one of the characters already introduced in this one. Mary Dell is such an interesting and unique character. Learning about the birth of her son, also a special character, and the beginning of Mary Dell's quilting career is great because after Cobbled Court Quilts, I had a lot of questions. This book is a fascinating story about good old down to earth people, held my interest the whole time, and begins to answer some of my questions. I can't wait to read the next book in the series, and I hope the series will be a long one.

Fairly entertaining

I enjoyed this story but the narration had ups and downs for me. She did an excellent job portraying the characters. However, when it was just reading narration, her voice was so soft, and breathy, and she often let the energy leave her voice at the last word of a sentence, that I missed some of what was said. This happened through the entire book.

A fun and heartwarming read.

I really enjoy Marie Bostwick's books. Totally "feel good" but also encouraging about life's ups and downs.

One week later, Congress bans the private possession of all semi-automatic assault rifles. Gun owners are given one week to turn in their semi-automatic rifles, or face a five year mandatory sentence.

The plot revolves around the true identity of the actual sniper. The alleged sniper killed at the scene may be a patsy, and many Americans refuse to turn in their banned weapons, leading to a civil crisis in the nation between supporters of the 2nd Amendment and a federal government trending toward tyranny.

Great story if you can get past the performance

Would you listen to Enemies Foreign and Domestic again? Why?

Yes, because once you get used to the audio quality and the delivery of Mr. Kemp, the book is great with a lot of inter-moving parts. It is a well written book.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

It was a great story and once you started it, it was a dramatic thrill-ride that kept you wanting to know what was going to happen next.

Would you be willing to try another one of Mike Kemps performances?

Probably not. The audio quality is sub-par and often times you can hear birds or frogs in the background. Maybe these were meant to enhance the audio experience, but I'm not sure. Often times, Mr. Kemp will give dialogue in a monotone voice leaving it up to you to interpret who is talking. Also, there are short phrases and words in the middle of a sentence that sounds like it was re-recorded and inserted into the audio.

Yes I would listen to the book again, because it is a great story, however out of all the books I have listened to this was without question the worst narration so far. It literally sounded like the narrator had a bucket on his head and the mic was set up a few yards away. His tone never changed and it was very hard to tell who was talking.

Yes

Would you consider the audio edition of Enemies Foreign and Domestic to be better than the print version?

Everybody is bashing the reader and audio quality. FORGET THEM! I don't want some Hollywood professional reading a book like this to me. I want somebody that sounds like he would be on the right side when it comes down to it. You know the old crusty range officer at the range? Imagine him reading to you.

Yes. If you are of this mindset, you will enjoy it. Terrifying, but good

Where did they find this narrator?

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I had read the book, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Thought I would listen to it on Audible while I baked. Good heavens!! If this was my first introduction to these books, and went by the narrated version, I never would have read another. Truly awful, stilted, almost embarrassing . I have heard many amateur narrators do a MUCH better job. This person utterly fails to capture the vivacious character of Lori. Save your money, or credit!

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Teri Clark Linden?

Almost anyone... Someone with a relaxed narration style who uses expression and 'gets' the character they are representing, ESP. First person narration!

Love the books but not the narrator

Great books but the narrator was monotone and choppy during the book. Took away from the story....

great story but the ending skip so much in the last five minutes that you can't really understand it

Another good Dimity story

Ms. Atherton succeeded in another good book. I still like Aunt Dimity's Death best but thus far there's not a bad one in the bunch.

Dreadful narration

I thought this looked like a good yarn, light reading to listen to while I work. However, after a few minutes into the first chapter I abandoned this book. Dreadful narration, which was stilted and the regional accents truly awful. I just couldn't bear to listen for more than a few minutes. I only gave one star for the story because the narration prevented me from hearing it.Waste of a credit!
