Those who are looking for a traditional book about witches will be disappointed, but if they keep reading, they will have a much more profound experience than the standard fantasy fare, one that will leave them thinking for a long time after they have finished the novel.

Thoroughly enjoyable

It filled in the war years of Dr Fingal and his coming back married to Kitty.

A disappointing note is that we should have been advised that it should come after Fingal O'Reilly Irish Doctor. Unfortunately I listened to the book and wish I'd realised it was out of sequence in the series.

Great deeper into life on a warship WWII

A great adventure with Fingal during his first year in battles as some in the British Royal Navy from the historically famous HMS WarSpite. This artfully crafted to progressively teach basic naval terms and tactics in the north Seas throughout the first half then into a major all out naval battle in the Mediterranean. Also, as in other books, the "current" year in the 1960s in the village of ballybucklebo is woven throughout the book. One gets a sense of just pre war and start of war as it was impacting lives in both northern Oreland and the Republic of Ireland during the flashbacks. Simultaneously a small foreshadowing of the outbreak of fighting to come later in the century to the wee North.

Engaging

This is book nine in the Irish Doctor series. It is best to read this series in order as Taylor builds the next story on the past one. In this book Taylor flashes back and forth between Northern Ireland in the 1960s and the Wartime travails of 1939 to 1945 at home and at sea. Dr. Fingal OReilly served in the Royal Navy during World War Two. The author tells of OReillys wartime courtship of his wife, Deirdre. Deirdre was a nurse midwife in training when they met.

I found the part of the story about OReillys service on HMS Warspite most interesting. Taylor tells of HMS Warspites action in the Battle of West Fjord in Norway and later off Italy. Then he covers HMS Warspites in time in Alexandria, Egypt. OReilly was a medical officer on the Warspite.

The book opens in the 1960s with housekeeper Kinkys wedding. Young Barry Laverty is back in Ballybucklebo and medical student Jenny is helping out for the summer.

The book is well written and researched. I really enjoyed the various Irish accents, the humor and the pithy insights. In this book, aboard HMS Warspite there is a wide variety of accents from Scottish to Cockney.

Absolutely fantastic.

I profoundly enjoyed this book and performance. This one will stick with me for a while. I was afraid this would be too much of a 'Young Adult' title, but it's definitely for mature readers.

A few plot elements were predictable, but that was a very minor blemish on an otherwise fantastic piece of work.

Amazing

This audiobook was such a gem in every way. Not a mystery--multiple mysteries. Characters that touch your heart and raise you up. The narration was perfect and so lovingly done. Also yet another example of how unnecessary foul language is to a gripping story. I wish I had 10 more audiobooks like this one.

It was an exciting well told story. I fell in love with the characters. The story touched on so many problems facing impoverished people.

Pleasantly surprised

I bought this book on sale & I didn't know what to expect. It's different from the usual genre I read.

I enjoyed this book but at first I was confused because it jumps from present to past. I just wanted to hug Liberté & give her a hug. I'm sure the characters are all fictional. This book opened my eyes to the trouble in Haiti.

Despair, Disaster & Disappointment Explored

I am three hours into this book and I have decided that I need to do a much better job choosing what I listen to here on audible. If I had been better at reading between the lines of the reviews here and on amazon I would have seen this sad story coming and been able to avoid such a dire, unhappy tale of suffering.

This book is set in Las Vegas and reminded me of The Goldfinch--the part where they lived in Las Vegas--the main difference is that this story is more depressing and not as well written. Hard to believe--I know. I can't recommend this book --unless for some reason you need to explore despair, betrayal, loss and heart ache through fiction--and really there are better books out there for that.

Ends too abruptly

It was an interesting read, with interesting characters, especially the boy. But it build to a crescendo then ended; suddenly, leaving me with an unsatisfied feeling.

Lifetime movie

Like a lifetime movie. Dnf. Boring and tedious. Not sure if narrator skewed my perspective with some of the characters. Could be better not audio.

Chekhov's gun. google it so you learn something

it wasn't good at first. then it got worse. then it was ending and tried to get edgy as hell but failed. if you really think about it, it wouldn't happen. none of this book makes sense.

Amazing narration

I love the book and the narrator truly added a very nice rhythm to this audio version of it. This book is a great start for anyone looking something intriguing and kind of mysterious.

Fascinating idea

No odour and an unimaginable sense of smell combine to make an intriguing story which is beautifully narrated. I wholeheartedly recommend this novel.

Didn't know what to expect, other than great narration as it was read by Sean Barrett. Even though I've listened to a lot of books narrated by Sean Barrett, I was surprised to find that he seems to have found yet another new voice for this book. His wonderful narration suits the beautiful language of this book.

It's not the story so much, as the beauty of the prose, the sensual descriptions and the vivid characterisations that I really enjoyed. I'm sure I wouldn't have got the same enjoyment if I'd read the book myself.

As soon as I'd finished listening, I started it again, and I listen to snippets as a treat alongside other books.

And, just like Grenouille who lives in fear of never experiencing a certain smell again, I find myself afraid that one day I won't be able to listen to this audiobook any more.

Innocence, Corruption, Poverty and Love in China

Book Three in the Scavenger's Daughters Series is just as good as the first two. Benfu and Calli have found their daughter which was stolen as a baby (Dahlia), who choses to keep the name given her at the orphanage . . . Li Jin. Together they have opened a shelter for unwanted children, continuing and expanding the work that her parents began many years before. Ivy and Lily, their adopted twins are teenagers now, but still just as deeply attached. Lily, the blind twin, is a brilliant violinist and determined to learn to navigate the world more independently. But when she asks her twin, Ivy to leave her alone in the park to play her violin for a few minutes, she is arrested for panhandling and thrown in jail. If you are an orphan then please read this novel. Let it help you to bring down the walls you have built up to keep people from getting close to you.

Spoiler Alert.

It's difficult to believe (and frustrating to witness) just how stupid some people can be. And while they may be very well intended, they refuse to communicate even with people they love. of course it all ends up working out miraculously in the end. if I hadn't already fought the entire series, I probably wouldn't bother with another one of these. Hopefully this changes next book as I can't imagine the author hasn't received this feedback.

A Must Read - Fantastic Heart Rendering Shorts

This book is a collection of short stories. Each story makes its point but leaves you with something to consider. The author does not preach but offers a perspective the each and every main character's POV in each short. This offers us the opportunity to experience the circumstances first hand and unfiltered. Some of the stories are more traumatic than others. There is a touch of gruesomeness of war, but no more than you would find in a Steven King novel and these stories are real. I like the book precisely because it make you think instead of telling you how it is.

Although the narrator is good, the transition from one story to the next sometimes jars you as the narrator switch personas without changing voice. It would have been more effective if there were two narrators alternating each short.

The other thing that will be a little challenging is understanding all of the three letter acronyms. For example FOB mean forward operating base. Luckily I have a good grip on the vocabulary, but for some, you are going to have to use the Internet. My wife, daughter, and boyfriend of daughter are reading it while I listened. It is a part of our book circle. My daughter's boyfriend recommended it and it has been a excellent choice. I would recommend for a club setting. Those you loved Kite Runner may find this book interesting.

Tales of a Literary Snob

When I picked up this book on Monday, I thought I might be in the mood for just this sort of thing, having seen glowing comments about it on a book site I frequent, and then the book summary itself convincing me completely I was in for a good time. The narrator Aaliya Saleh is a 72 year-old Lebanese woman who's lived all her life in Beirut. Though she was married off at 16 'to the first unsuitable suitor who came along', she ended up divorced by her impotent husband and childless 4 years later, rejected by her family and all but friendless, but always sustained by her great passion for literature, which also led her to develop a passion for music. The novel is told as a kind of memoir where she holds a long meandering monologue about herself, her youth, the civil war years, her current situation, the books she's read, the music she's listened to, and explains why she's spent the better part of her life translating 37 foreign-language books into Arabic starting from French or English translations (translations of translations), then putting the finished text in a box and sealing it away. On the day she starts her narration, her oldest half brother has just dropped by with their elderly insane mother, demanding that Aaliya take her in, a task she narrowly escapes, but an incident that leaves he shaken nonetheless.

From the outset, the book had all the elements which should have made for a very appealing reading experience, but very early on, I found myself repelled for all kinds of reasons which I am not sure I can detail without sounding petty. I started listening to the audio version, and found that narrated out loud, Aaliya came off sounding like an insufferable literary snob, with continual quotes from books and philosophers (which should have appealed, but didn't) and a strong tendency to complain about everything and everybody.

Would you try another book from Sarah Addison Allen and/or Janet Metzger?

I would, only because her other books were so much better. I waited for her to release a new book. I was pretty bummed. This one did not live up to the expectations she had set for herself. The 'magic' wasn't the same.

Would you ever listen to anything by Sarah Addison Allen again?

I'm not sure. This was the first one of her books (I've read all of her others) that I listened to. I'm not sure if that had anything to do with the 'magic' being different? But I rarely read books anymore and I LOVE Sarah Addison-Allen so I'm sure I will listen to her next book!

Would you listen to another book narrated by Janet Metzger?

Not my favorite reader. But tolerable.

Great writing and story until the end

The end got weird and drawn out. It's pretty obvious how it will end and VERY obvious within the last two hours. Which was okay until the last 45 minutes when it just drug out.

It grows on you 'til you love it

I've read her other cozy mysteries and enjoy them as light entertainment. This book isn't my usual type, a character driven novel, but it was done so well, that by the end, I was won over.

Good listening for a student of German

What made the experience of listening to Der zweiköpfige Drache [The Two-headed Dragon] the most enjoyable?

Leila Ulama reads beautifully and clearly and does the voices very well. A good read for both adults and children even if it is a sweet, if unlikely story. A lot of the men reading German books sound as though they smoke Gauloises because they have such deep smoky voices and for a non-German are not easy to follow. I'll get more books read by Leila Ulama if I find them.

Good children's tale in German that is really simplistic. I would recommend it for small children or anyone learning German.
