Title: Crossing in Time: Between Two Evils #1
    Author: D. L. Orton
Narrator: Noah Michael Levine, Erin deWard
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 17 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-07-15
    Publisher: Rocky Mountain Press
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 77 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
If someone took everything you live for, how far would you go to get it back?
When offered a one-way trip to the past, Isabel sacrifices everything for a chance to change the rapidly deteriorating present - and see her murdered lover one last time. When she arrives 20 years in the past, buck naked and mortally wounded, she has 24 hours to convince a stunned but enraptured 19-year-old to change their future. Definitely easier said than done, as success means losing him to a brainy, smart-mouthed bombshell (her younger self), and that's a heart breaker, save the world or not.
This offbeat tale is about falling madly in love when one is too cynical for such things, letting go of pessimism when it's the last life jacket on a sinking ship, and racing against the clock when one doesn't have the proper footwear. It's a coming-of-age story for old fogeys, a how-to-make-love guide for diehard celibates, and a laugh-out-loud tragedy with a hopeful twist.

    Epic Story and Performance!
Wow! This story, and narration blew me away! It was AWESOME! Let's see, where do I start?
First the narration! WOW! After learning this story was narrated by the duo Noah Michael Levine, and Erin DeWard who just won the 2016 Audie Award in Erotic, I was expecting an awesome performance; however, this duo surpassed any expectation I had on an awesome performance. Their performance is absolutely the best I've heard, and the best I have in my library of over 400 audiobooks. Crossing in Time is worth listening too just for the performance alone! Not only did they bring this story to life, but each characters voice, and emotions felt so real. For example, I literally had chills when one of the characters attempted to attack another one, and the emotions from both of these characters felt real, I couldn't help but to react to their emotions. A truly riveting performance that has set the bar high when rating future performances.
Now on to the story! What an amazing well written story, with a plot that had a diverse blend of sci-fi/time travel, romance, thriller, humor, and dystopian rolled into an unique and exciting plot that kept me guessing. I haven't read many time travel stories; however, this story kinda reminded me of Peter Clines, The Fold, because of how each universe effected the other but with a major emphasis on the romance, and love between Isabel and Deigo as the fate of the universe could vary well depend on their relationship. This story has some pretty intense moments, that kept me on the edge, and guessing what was going to happen next.
The story does end on a cliffhanger, so we do not know if Isabel going back in time has saved the universes, but I am looking forward to finding out how the plot unfolds in book two. Also, the story started off a little slow, and I was wondering when it was going to pick up, but then it exploded.literally....

    Publisher's Summary:
As a girl, Genevieve Martin spent the happiest summer of her life in Paris, learning the delicate art of locksmithing at her uncle's side. But since then, living back in the States, she has become more private, more subdued. She has been an observer of life rather than an active participant, holding herself back from those around her, including her soon-to-be ex-husband. Paris never really left Genevieve, and, as her marriage crumbles, she finds herself faced with an incredible opportunity: return to the magical city of her youth to take over her late uncle's shop. But as she absorbs all that Parisian culture has to offer, she realizes that the city also holds secrets about her family that could change her forever, and that locked doors can protect you or imprison you, depending on which side of them you stand.

    Paris As I Know Her
Finally a chance to gather my thoughts to review THE PARIS KEY, one of my absolute favorite recent releases by an excellent author I've only recently discovered. I enjoyed every aspect of this novel. The characters seem fresh, interesting and well developed. The setting is expertly and lovingly rendered. The storyline held my interest throughout. The reader, XE Sands, did a terrific job, but really needs to work on her Irish and Scottish accents . Overall, I enjoyed this so much, I actually listened to it several times and then bought the kindle version. Congratulations, Ms. Blackwell, you have written another wonderful novel, which I think could easily become the first in a fabulous new series!!!
    Delightful!
I really enjoy Juliet Blackwell's stories. They are far from boring and even though I usually prefer raunchy novels I don't get bored with her books. They make a delightful change of pace once in a while.
Xe Sands is often not everyone's cup of tea as a narrator but she did a lovely job not butchering the copious amounts of french in this book.
Well worth your credit on a dreary day when you are in need of a light whimsical story with a touch of mystery and sleuthing.
Not a cozy murder mystery but a cozy slice of life
Juliet Blackwell usually writes cozy murder mysteries but she has taken a delightful turn in 'The Paris Key'. A wonderful slice of life story in the vein of 'Under the Tuscan Sun' as a Californian woman goes on a journey to find her footing as she prepares for her divorce and instead finds herself in ways she never expected.
Ms. Blackwell does her usual magnificent job painting characters, history, and cities with her easy going literary brush.
Xe Sands narration is so soothing and calming--perfect after a long day or for a lazy weekend.
It was in a great listen
    crossiant and chocolate
A love story and a bit of mystery. I love how authentic the story felt. I was transported to a place and saw it, felt it and smelled it with the words written by the author and brought to life by the narrator. I was sad it ended because I enjoyed every minute.
    Disappointing and predictactable
Would you try another book from Juliet Blackwell and/or Xe Sands?
I usually enjoy Juliet Blackwell's writing and Xe Sands' narration.
What was most disappointing about Juliet Blackwells story?
The story was meandering and predictable.

    Publisher's Summary:
Harley Altmyer should be in college drinking Rolling Rock and chasing girls. He should be freed from his closed-minded, stricken coal town, with its lack of jobs and no sense of humor. Instead, he's constantly reminded of just how messed up his life is.
With his mother in jail for killing his abusive father, Harley is an orphan with the responsibilities of an adult and the fiery, aggressive libido of a teenager. Just nineteen years old, he's marooned in the Pennsylvania backwoods caring for his three younger sisters, whose feelings about him range from stifling dependence to loathing. And once he develops an obsession with the sexy, melancholic mother of two living down the road, those Victoria's Secret catalogs just won't do the trick anymore. He wants Callie Mercer so badly he fears he will explode. But it's the family secrets, the lies, and the unspoken truths that light the fuse and erupt into a series of staggering surprises, leaving what's left of his family in tatters. Through every ordeal, the unforgettable Harley could never know that his endearing humor, his love for his sisters, and his bumbling heroics would redeem them all.
Funny and heartbreaking, Tawni O'Dell's pitch-perfect characters capture the maddening confusion of adolescence and the prickly nature of family with irony and unerring honesty. Back Roads is a riveting novel by a formidable talent.

    Intriguing but dark
I chose this book because I have relatives in this part of Pennsylvania. I think it was also on Oprahs list. I was curious about what kind of story would take place within the backwoods, rural hunting culture and poverty in that area. The story is riveting, but disturbing enough I considered stopping before it was over. If you have a strong stomach, its worth the read.
    Dark Book!
very disturbing book, but well written and very sad this story is no rainbows & butterflies . Well written book.
A tad too dark & hopeless for me
This is well-written and offers insights into the lives of children who grow up physically and emotionally abused. I listened to the end, because the story is compelling and the narrator mostly sympathetic, but had to stop often and turn to music. I can't say I enjoyed this - too dark! - but that's a very personal experience.

Length: 10 hrs and 7 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-28-15
    Publisher: Penguin Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 710 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Kitchens of the Great Midwest, about a young woman with a once-in-a-generation palate who becomes the iconic chef behind the country's most coveted dinner reservation, is the summer's most hotly-anticipated debut.
When Lars Thorvald's wife, Cynthia, falls in love with wine - and a dashing sommelier - he's left to raise their baby, Eva, on his own. He's determined to pass on his love of food to his daughter - starting with puréed pork shoulder. As Eva grows, she finds her solace and salvation in the flavors of her native Minnesota. From Scandinavian lutefisk to hydroponic chocolate habaneros, each ingredient represents one part of Eva's journey as she becomes the star chef behind a legendary and secretive pop-up supper club, culminating in an opulent and emotional feast that's a testament to her spirit and resilience.
Each chapter in J. Ryan Stradal's startlingly original debut tells the story of a single dish and character, at once capturing the zeitgeist of the Midwest, the rise of foodie culture, and delving into the ways food creates community and a sense of identity. By turns quirky, hilarious, and vividly sensory, Kitchens of the Great Midwest is an unexpected mother-daughter story about the bittersweet nature of life - its missed opportunities and its joyful surprises. It marks the entry of a brilliant new talent.
    Editorial Reviews:
"[Kitchens of the Great Midwest is] the first novel about the emergence and current state of foodie culture...Fundamentally, [it's] about what happens when opposing personalities coexist...." (Book Forum)
    Critic Reviews:
"Ryan and Stuhlbarg shine as they use subtle pacing and tone to portray the unique personalities of each character, adding just the slightest hints of a Midwestern accent to give authenticity and differentiation. Stradal's skillful writing delivered by accomplished narrators offers listeners a debut performance to savor." (AudioFile)

    So satisfying
It was a great experience. The story is quite clever, and all of its parts fit together so satisfyingly. The Story went a little over the top, at times, but in this scheme, it was somehow ok. Having spent some time in the Twin Cities, and having grown up in Wisconsin, I loved the regional familiarity. I loved the narrators dialect, and I especially love bars.
    Good story
I found this a very interesting story. Kept my attention. Found I needed to listen carefully as the characters from each chapters intertwined and where some meet in the last chapter of the book. The narration was very good and the main character Eva was strong and I found you became vested in the characters. All in all, I really enjoyed.
    unevenly cooked!
I wanted to love this whole book as much as I loved the beginning chapters. But not all of the chapters, each one being a microcosm of the heroine's life at some stage, were interesting. I still give it 3 stars. The beginning, with poor smelly lutefisk king Lars, whose social awkwardness encourages a love affair with food, was inspired and hilarious. Lars is excited to plan meals for his baby Eva and introduce her to his favorites, like pork shoulder, from Day One. The baby's pediatrician has to dash his hopes.

Not Written So Much As Sung!
I didn't mean to listen to this from start to finish with only a tiny nap in between, honest I didn't. It was just too damned engaging, the characters were so well-fleshed out, and the writing! They weren't just words on a page, they were a darned hymn! If I could write like this I'd be sitting at my laptop day and night, enthralled, thankful.
Instead, I'm listening to "When the Moon Is Low," by Nadia Hashimi, enthralled, thankful.
From the beginning, Fereiba is a strong, immensely likable character, kept at home, who will do anything for an education. Then she is swirled through the waters of the conventions of arranged marriage only to get off on an answered prayer.
But nothing is ever easy in Afghanistan. An arranged marriage might not be the worst thing in the world.
As Fereiba says, she lives through, "many regime changes in Afghanistan." Starting with the death of her mother. And it goes from there. There's her stepmother, but there's the Soviet Union as she gets her teaching certificate too. And the Taliban.
Everything goes from loving exposition to utterly breathless from there, but characterization never fails and plot never falters. And once again, at the danger of being hopelessly repetitive, the writing is exemplary.
Sneha Mathan and Neil Shah turn in wonderful performances. I kinda had reservations about Neil Shah, having heard him in a previous audiobook where he turned in a capable but less than stellar performance, and here was a book than demanded fantastic. I was really, really pleased. The hand-off from Fereiba to Saleem is credible, pulse-pounding, and humane.
Spend the money, spend the credit, spend the time on this truly awesome story.

    Guilty pleasure
This is the last book in the Marked Men series and it was a satisfying ending. This series isn't high brow literature, but they're fun reads and the narration is better than average. This particular story line didn't interest me as much as some of the previous books (Rule, Rome, Rowdy and Nash) and the names started to get just a little bit ridiculous. Still, it was an enjoyable few hours and worth a listen if you've read the rest of the series.
Great ending to a great series!

His ability to finally forgive himself!
What did you like best about this story?
