    Entertaining & Educational
Would you listen to A Cadre of Experts: An LSAT Novel again? Why?
This audiobook tells the story of Alexandra and Noah, as they navigate the LSAT experience. It is quite entertaining and yet oh so educational. I fell in love with the characters. What they teach about the exam is special, fun, and highly instructional. The writing is good too; the story flows naturally and is fast-paced. I learned so much about the LSAT and, as the author calls it, the emotional roller-coaster you ride before, during (especially during) and after the LSAT. If I had to sum up my review, (and perhaps add a personal recommendation) I would say this book is simply a terrific novel, should be the first thing you read once youve decided to commence on your LSAT journey, and will probably become as much a classic read for LSAT students as 1L is for future law students.
    Fantastic! Buy this book!

    me encantó.....
me introdujo al mundo de los audiolibros de la mejor manera....con una narracion entrañable de hechos y lugares que me hablaron de la niñez de mi padre y la vida de mis abuelos...... Me encantó......

    Very enjoyable!
I really liked the balance of carefree, fun, friendship, passionate pie baking, family and small town life with the suspenseful, mysterious, magical and mystical life surrounding it. I also like the recipes and baking hints even though I don't bake pies .
more urban fantasy than cozy mystery.
this story got even more wierd than usual for this series. I dont really associate magical battles with the genre.
    I love this series..
But I live in Georgia and I really wish the narrator would stop dropping her g's at the end of words that end in "ing". We drawl, but we're not hicks.
    urf the narrator!
Would you try another book from Ellery Adams and/or C. S. E Cooney?
no I just can not. Had to read the book myself. The overly cartoon voices, the odd pacing. I can't listen to her.I have tried
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
    read the book
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of C. S. E Cooney?
ANYONE!!!! Including my 9 year old
    Any additional comments?
    Read the books
    Meh..
"Meh..." about describes it. Not at all as good as her Bayside writers (or whatever it's called, can never remember series names) group series. Time for a new installment about her authors group.

    Winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award
"One of the most intelligent, grimly funny voices to comment on life in present-day America" (The New York Times), Don DeLillo presents an extraordinary new novel about words and images, novelists and terrorists, the mass mind and the archindividualist.
At the heart of the book is Bill Gray, a famous reclusive writer who escapes the failed novel he has been working on for many years and enters the world of political violence, a nightscape of Semtex explosives and hostages locked in basement rooms. Bill's dangerous passage leaves two people stranded: his brilliant, fixated assistant, Scott; and the strange young woman who is Scott's lover - and Bill's.

    The Individual vs the Masses
My third DeLillo book after White Noise and The Names. DeLillo seems to predict the future with this book in regards to group-think, terrorism, modern American culture etc. Throughout the book DeLillo puts together thoughtful sentences and ideas. I highlighted numerous sentences and passages while reading the book. Much to ponder and it is a book I will read a second time. This story has it's focus on a reclusive writer who seems similar to J.D. Salinger. The book opens with the the big 1980s "arranged marriage event" at Yankee Stadium presided over by the Rev Moon. It ends with our reclusive writer coming out of hiding for an "event" set to go down in Beirut. A good story, well told, with interesting characters, a tale full of insights on the state of our modern culture. If you have not read DeLillo you are missing out. Excellent, thought-provoking writer. I am now reading Libra.
Review - Mao II by Don DeLillo
This book explores a panopticon of themes, among them being Maoism, the phenomenon of the reclusive author, and the idea that the growing population of people in the world, collectively, are starting to have a large effect on how we as a society see individual identity. The book starts with Bill Gray, a reclusive author living in upstate New York, his assistant, Scott, who plays a large part in keeping Bill isolated in their shared house, and their relationship with Karen, a 24-year old convert to the Unification Church. The novel moves forward when Brita, a photographer, takes pictures of Bill, and carries to Bill a message from Billâs old publisher. After hearing the message, Bill leaves and heads to London, where he plans to take part in a press conference, to help secure the release of a hostage being held by a terrorist group in Lebanon. Mao II is often categorized as a postmodern novel, and the denouement is where we see the trueness of this description. The press conference doesnât happen, and it keeps getting postponed until it doesnât happen at all. It seems that the terrorists win.
I live in Southern China and find the undercurrent of Maoism in the book to be relevant today, even though the book was written over twenty years ago. The novel has multiple settings: the United States, London, and Cyprus, and this feature along with the Chinese influence gives the book a very worldly feel. We see Maoâs idea of the âPeopleâs Warâ present when the book deals with terrorism, terrorists are resisting society at large both violently and ideologically, they aim not only to subvert the social order, but to change the culture at large.

    Title: Mornings in Jenin
    Author: Susan Abulhawa
    Narrator: Jennifer Woodward
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 50 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-16-16
    Publisher: Audible Studios for Bloomsbury
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 63 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Mornings in Jenin is a multigenerational story about a Palestinian family.
Forcibly removed from the olive-farming village of Ein Hod by the newly formed state of Israel in 1948, the Abulhejos are displaced to live in canvas tents in the Jenin refugee camp. We follow the Abulhejo family as they live through a half century of violent history. Amid the loss and fear, hatred and pain, as their tents are replaced by more forebodingly permanent cinderblock huts, there is always the waiting, waiting to return to a lost home.
The novel's voice is that of Amal, the granddaughter of the old village patriarch, a bright, sensitive girl who makes it out of the camps only to return years later, to marry and bear a child. Through her eyes, with her evolving vision, we get the story of her brothers, one who is kidnapped to be raised Jewish, one who will end with bombs strapped to his middle. But of the many interwoven stories stretching backward and forward in time, none is more important than Amal's own. Her story is one of love and loss, of childhood and marriage and parenthood, and finally of the need to share her history with her daughter, to preserve the greatest love she has.
Set against one of the 20th century's most intractable political conflicts, Mornings in Jenin is a deeply human novel - a novel of history, identity, friendship, love, terrorism, surrender, courage, and hope. Its power forces us to take a fresh look at one of the defining conflicts of our lifetimes.

    Important, heart-breaking story
Would you listen to Mornings in Jenin again? Why?
Yes! Woodward's voice was not annoying, and I enjoyed her reading. This is the kind of book where you miss a few things the first time, so I would actually listen to it again to take note of the things I missed.
What did you like best about this story?
The relationships were so fantastically captured. I could identify with them even when I didn't have much in common with some characters.
What does Jennifer Woodward bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
I liked her accenting of the different POVs. I also presume that her pronunciation of Arabic terms is correct (it sounds correct); whereas if I read it I might have just skimmed over the Arabic terms. I also like that Woodward becomes passionate when Amaal is passionate. This is not an apathetic book, and so the narrator must not be apathetic either.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It made me laugh a few times, because some of the characters say funny things. And it made me smile warmly at some of the family/friend relationships. But mostly it made me cry many many times; not only because the tragedies were so great, but because I know they are based on reality.
    Any additional comments?
I thought I knew a fare bit about the Israel-Palestine conflict, and that I was quite open-minded, but this book taught me so much more. I am glad I listened to it. It was heart-breaking, but I don't regret it. I only regret that humans do such horrid things to one another.
Brilliant Journey in the the Soul of Suffering
Okay first off, I don't want to talk about the extraneous political flamers so often brought into books about Israel/ Palestine. I'm not going to make any statements about that, or indulge in fisking and nit picking.
This is a work of fiction and as such it is brilliant.

    A Solid Summary
The author has a clear and interesting focus, but it goes to show how malleable the content of the actual novel is. The approach here is a somewhat cynical one, which, in my humble opinion, is not the wholistic nature of Gravitys Rainbow. In fact, I think theres quite a bit of optimism to be found, even (or especially) in the closing pages. Granted, it all depends on what major thematic lens you place atop the text i.e. religion, politics, technology, humanity, connection, war, etc. The only real issue I have is that SPOILERS he did not address the theatres bombing at the very beginning of the novel being paralleled and exemplified at the very end, which is massively important in supporting the thematics of the story and solidifying the book as the postmodern masterwork its constantly acclaimed to be.
Makes the actual GR book much more accessible
What did you like most about The Gravity's Rainbow Handbook?
Gives a really good mental map of the book, the structure and the characters but in no way diminishes the actual novel.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Gravity's Rainbow Handbook?
The list of the characters, some very droll comments in there.
What does Stephen Paul Aulridge Jr. bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
A very measured reading but eminently listenable to.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No but that was not the intention of the book.
    Any additional comments?
    Essential reading before tackling GR

    Title: The Lightkeepers

    Narrator: Xe Sands
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 31 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-12-16
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 724 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
In The Lightkeepers, we follow Miranda, a nature photographer who travels to the Farallon Islands, an exotic and dangerous archipelago off the coast of California, for a one-year residency capturing the landscape. Her only companions are the scientists studying there, odd and quirky refugees from the mainland living in rustic conditions; they document the fish populations around the island, the bold trio of sharks called the Sisters that hunt the surrounding waters, and the overwhelming bird population that, at times, creates the need to wear hard hats as protection from their attacks.
Shortly after her arrival, Miranda is assaulted by one of the inhabitants of the islands. A few days later, her assailant is found dead, perhaps the result of an accident. As the novel unfolds, Miranda gives witness to the natural wonders of this special place as she grapples with what has happened to her and deepens her connection to (and her suspicions of) her companions, all while falling under the thrall of the legends of the place nicknamed "the Islands of the Dead". And when more violence occurs, each member of this strange community falls under suspicion.
The Lightkeepers upends the traditional structure of a mystery novel - an isolated environment, a limited group of characters who might not be trustworthy, a death that may or may not have been accidental, a balance of discovery and action - while also exploring wider themes of the natural world, the power of loss, and the nature of recovery. It is a luminous debut novel from a talented and provocative new writer.
    Members Reviews:
    Spooky and Strange
Before you decide on trying this book do yourself a favor and do an internet search for the Farallon Islands and research the place where the action occurs. There is a serious mixed history for this location. Also, be aware that the level of creepiness in this tale by far surpasses the mystery in the story. The book is heavily and weirdly first person narrative which complicates what is a fairly straight forward story. Wild nature and wild humans run amuck. Island life is captured. Confusion and mayhem reign. Sands delivers an emotional reading which is at times hard to understand but at the same time compelling. An interesting diversion. In the end a very strange book.
Mystery, thriller, and nature all done very well
Before reading The Lightkeepers, Andrea Barrett was the only author I had read who could evoke science and the natural world in beautiful, almost poetic, prose, but I was pleased to discover that Abby Geni has that same skill. She tells the story of six biologists and Miranda, a nature photographer, living together on the Farallon Islands, a wildlife refuge 30 miles off the coast of California. This setting is perfect for a book that has a bit of everything, mystery, psychological thriller, wildlife, and wilderness, and does all of them well. The Lightkeepers is an interesting and unique story about the quirky humans trying to live on the island, observe, not interact, and take only what they need, and the birds, mice, bats, seals, whales, and sharks that are the real inhabitants of the island. Geni states that "one of the great illusions of the human experience is that we are somehow outside of nature beyond the food chain that we are not animals ourselves.

    Critic Reviews:
"Toby Neal's Lei Crime Series is a wonderful achievement in consistency and style, introducing us to a rich landscape filled with memorable characters. Eight books in, I'm already anxiously waiting for number nine!" [Detective (ret.) David Swinson, author of A Detailed Man]

    Listened to it TWICE!
I love listening to Sara Malia Hatfield narrate the Lei Crime Series by Toby Neal who depicts the Hawaiian islands with such beautiful insight as only a lifelong resident can. Sara enhances the experience with the perfect enunciation of the Hawaiian names & places as well as local pidgin. I am still in awe of her ability to give distinctive voices to so many characters, male and female.
The plot of FIRE BEACH is another gut-twisting adventure with police detective Lei Texeira and her husband, Detective Michael Stevens. The threats against their lives never end as they try to start their lives over again in a new home with a baby from Stevens' previous marriage and Lei's father, now their live-in nanny.
I don't want to give anything away, so I'll just say that FIRE BEACH was so good I had to listen to it a second time.
    Can't Stop Reading
Although there are times when I question why Lei is even in law enforcement with all of her obvious "issues" and insecurities, I just can't stop reading this series! I love the backdrop of Hawaii, which adds more interest to the story. Sara Malia Hatfield does an excellent job of bringing the characters to life!
    Heart wrenching
This story not only gets you into a complex mystery as all the Lei Crime stories do, but it is also a story about the strength of a relationship, what a couple can endure, and how much trust they have in one another.
What I really liked about this story is that you get a glimpse into the mind of the criminal, much more than in prior stories. Also, you have two investigations going on - one with Lei and the other with Michael. Quite the ride!
As always, Sara is a phenomenal narrator. I listed to a lot of audiobooks, and she is by far my favorite narrator!

    Just rather silly...
Having read the reviews about how funny this book is...I gave it a listen. Although it had its cute moments, I think it got only one little smile or two from me. I think it's probably a generational thing. I'm in my sixties and found some of the behavior of the characters just plain silly and somewhat crass.
    coarse, predictable
I was surprised to see how many favorable reviews this book has. so much of the humor was scatological 3rd-grade level jokes about bodily functions or goofy gags. also, part of the plot revolved around the fact that the architect and builder were supposed to be cheap, bottom of the barrel sorts, but in fact all of the workers work hard and do a flawless job, something anyone who has ever gone through home renovations will know is unbelievable in and of itself
Spalding Cracked Me Up Once Again!
When I wasn't smiling, I was grinning; when I wasn't grinning, I was chuckling; when I wasn't chuckling, I was braying laughter in public (Seriously! There's this one scene where they're doing a live broadcast of the renovation that is to die for! People on the sidewalk couldn't get away from me fast enough).
Told from both sib's point of view, with Heather Wilds' performance just a tad hampered and less fantastic than Napoleon Ryan's, Spalding takes the listener on a journey from a heap of a house to, well, you'll find out what happens along the way. This is more than just a book with slapstick renovation trials and tribulations; this is two people finding their way in life and what happens within themselves as they struggle. The characters are wonderfully drawn, from Danny and Hayley, to the builders, to Pat the Cow, and there's even a dash of a mystery thrown in.
If your don't mind some minor moments of sexual innuendo, lewdness, as I don't--indeed, they're downright hilarious--then get ready to enjoy eight and a half hours of delightful scenes of power tool mishaps, weed clearing mayhem, schoolboy crushes featuring colorful and memorable characters.
"Bricking It" has been the most enjoyable time I've spent in a long time.
Funny w/ surprises, really laughing hard in spots
Narrators were excellent. Story kept moving and characters were vivid to imagine.

    Recensioni dei membri:
    great engaging read
the story is great and you will want to know how it develops and how it started.
the narrator was excellent changing tone from dialect to Italian and I sometimes felt I was in a theatre.
When a city seems larger than its country
I appreciated the detail, and variety of characters. The dynamics of the "rione" are rivaled only by the plotting of Kings and Queens.
