Enjoyed the hell out of this. Listened to this with my friends on a road trip and we were laughing the whole way through. Deadpan comedy at it's finest.

Darcie Wilder is wildly talented. I know every one has been talking about this book, but people need to listen to the audiobook. Hearing her read it is so funny.

A LONG Boring Journey That Ultimately Goes Nowhere.

I had high hopes for this book, but they were quickly dashed....I settled for mediocre hopes; but alas, not even those were fulfilled!

A story with pretensions; this was a 9 hour Seinfeld episode: a story about nothing. No plot, no real character development, nothing driving it....ughhhh the more I think about it the more annoyed I become. I can't even be bothered to write a thoughtful critique much like the author couldn't be bothered to write a book with an actual plot. The entire time I listened all I could think was: what is the point here?

Banal

Story didn't have much compelling to it. As a Bostonian it captures western MA well, but that's about it. Kind of like a reverse animal farm, for adults. None of the characters was particularly compelling.

Boring

Some clever dialogue, but overall a huge snore. Thoughtfully written, but uneventful. No identifiable premise. A true enough portrait of life, but no story at all. The reader does a very good job.

Uneven in both story and narration

I found the premise of the book quite appealing, not so much the execution. First of all it at times felt kind of jarring and disjointed. The women receive their letters to come live with their lifelong friend in Fiji, to essentially give up their current lives and spend their remaining years in "paradise". All the women are in their sixties, and this is an extraordinary chance for them to come together and reinvent their remaining years among life long friends.

The next chapter is essentially about six weeks after they arrive on the island. Hmmm. Seems like their initial reactions and adapting to this new place and life would have been interesting, but all that is skipped.

The narration is also rather jarring. Some of the characters, especially the housekeeper, are voiced beautifully. But most of the male characters sound alike, and all sound like clueless idiots, and the main female characters...they sound different, but are hard to keep straight who is who.

Tougher to get through

If I let this book marinate in my mind a bit, I think I'll find that it gives me some new perspectives on issues I don't know much about. I think I've known people who've walked the road of this book's protagonist, and I couldn't understand why they did what they did. Maybe this book have me a window into what happens in a really dysfunctional family and why that sometimes makes people do things that I don't think make sense.

Still, that made this book more difficult for me to read than others where I connect to the characters more easily. I found the characters exasperating and infrequently sympathetic. That doesn't make the book bad, it just took a little more effort to work through.

What the hell is This

I always said I was a diehard fan of Megan Hart, but what the hell? Do not waste your money on this garbage; it was boring, difficult to make out, etc. The whole book was skimmed over, sort of an abridged version. There were so many questions not answered (in every single chapter)......the confusion, ...... it was just down right weird. And to top it off the narration was boring as hell. The books starts out with Alisha who is unhappy but allows her ex to get away with being irresponsible but remains in his life and and chooses to stay connected as business partners., Then his long lost brother comes home. Apparently, she always liked his brother but nothing came of it; flash back to the past, tragedy struck, he couldn't get along with his mom, so, he left without saying good bye to her. Due to the connections her and the ex husband had with her sister, they got together, so they could somehow keep her sister's memory alive(apparently, her sister and the ex-husband used to be a thing (we were left to make assumptions because no one ever came out and said it). Now that the brother is back, they begin to get close - what's even more weird, as adults, the issues they faced (basic communication) in their so called "relationship" was more of something you would expect from kids. By the time they admitted their feelings for each other they are separated again but this time by choice but apparently this separation won't be for long. Seems all over the place? Well it was. This was just horrible.

Doesn't know what kind of book it wants to be

I started & stopped this book originally when it didn't catch my attention but restarted it later when I needed a break from my recent horror addiction. This book is badly written & all over the place. The characters aren't consistent, sometimes they would say or do something and it was completely out of left field like she forgot which person she was writing about. The book would randomly have these erotic sex scenes out of nowhere, all I could think was "what a whore" and NOT in a good way! I love some erotic fiction but this was BLEGH.

Heroine was hard to empathize with

I am sorry if my thoughts on this book offend an rape survivor but this book created some strong emotions in me and I felt really unsettled and unsatisfied with this books ending. I get that the author was tackling a sensitive subject but I didnt quite agree with certain things. I needed time to reflect so I can write my review with sensitivity, yet honesty. I do not feel like I can be honest without victimizing people who have already been brutalized. So I will keep my words brief.

The book starts off with a history of how young Amber Bryant and Tyler Hicks became friends complete with their various family dysfunction. I believe the author was trying to lay foundation of what drove Amber and Tyler. This background led me to connect with Tyler and not so much with Amber. There were a lot of things that rubbed me the wrong. First I want to start off by saying Rape is just a horrible crime. I am not interested in victim blaming or justifications, however I do believe alcohol abuse does change the situation. I am not blaming Amber at all, but I am saying that Tyler wasnt in a clear frame of mind to be making sure he got consent first. In addition, I do not agree that Tyler, whom the author had painted as a nice friend, just turned into a this monster so fast and the reader is to believe that he would take advice for a father whom he has despised just so he can avoid dealing with devastation his actions wrought. I do love that Amber talked to both her parents and they stood by her. The fact that they embraced her immediately and validated her was everything. Her parents seemed to be really good parents unlike Tylers parents.

I didnt like the hypocrisy in the end with Amber committing a crime, but its viewed with understanding and its okay that Tyler covered her actions up because I guess Tyler owes Amber for his part in hurting her.

At the end of the day, I hope all rape victims get counseling and have a support for their healing. .This book was hard to review but it make me examine my own beliefs on the topic.

Exceptional writing and storytelling. Magariel exhibits the best of straightforward Midwestern storytelling and the best of Southwestern beauty.

Not a bad debut, but not earth-shattering either

What did you like best about One of the Boys? What did you like least?

I liked that it was a book I was able to listen to in one sitting, and I felt that the first person point of view of the youngest son was a good way to show what it is like to live with the instability an addicted parent can cause. Personally, however, regardless of point of view, it's hard for me to relate to characters who are unnamed, as this family was. I also feel that the epilogue would have been better in the story, if for no reason other than to give a sense of the time period.

Would you be willing to try another book from Daniel Magariel? Why or why not?

Absolutely. While this book was not exactly what I expected it wasn't bad, and Magariel does have talent. One of the Boys is a debut and I'd love to see where his career goes and what other stories he has to tell.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

There were times that the performance was very good and you could feel the anxiety and fears of the main character. At other moments it felt rather detached and emotionless.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

I might. I think this book would work very well as a movie, however seeing abuse on screen is more difficult for me than listening to a book or reading one.

Any additional comments?

It's more like 3-3.5 stars for me. I don't feel it was a waste of my time and I did enjoy it, but I think it could have been greater than it ultimately was. A good book, but not a spectacular one.
