PEOPLE CHECK IN, BUT THEY DON'T CHECK OUT

It is black or white on rather you will love or hate this book, and you will do one of the two. If you enjoy slasher movies and/or you are the type to pay extra to see the freaks at the circus, you will love this. If you do not enjoy such things you will hate this. I'M SURROUNDED BY FREAKS.

If you are still reading then you will love this, so how does this compare to other Konrath scary books? I have read three of Konrath's science fiction books and this is my third scary or dark book. This is a five star book, but I did like Trapped best and then Afraid and then this. I'm sure I should not admit to it, but I have always been fascinated by inbreeding and the results. X-Files has an episode involving an inbreeding family that I liked a lot. Due to Man's silly belief that leadership is in the blood, we have several examples of inbreeding throughout our history with the Kings and Queens and Pharaohs. The premise for this story is a family who has Roosevelt blood and believes they can breed a new president. Through most of the book I was shocked and grossed out, but I will admit toward the end, it did get to the point of enough already. Konrath got to the point where he was just coming up with all the weird oddities he could think up and the story got a bit redundant. I also did not find the Mountain Lion scary, nor did I think it fit into the story that well. I realize that Mountain Lions are nothing to be messed with, but it was just a regular everyday mountain lion.

You can not compare Konrath to Koontz or King, these guys have totally different styles. King and Koontz write scary mess with your head stuff, sometimes with character development and usually a political message. Konrath writes dark, gory, shocking stuff, without character development or any messages. He is just trying to entertain.

The narrator is very good.

A great book for fans of monster horror books

I was delightfully surprised how good this book was. The scenario is set up well and the author did his homework on Wendigos and you really feel the fear and paranoia that the characters go through. I really liked the two main characters of the story and cared what happened to them. I would recommend that you read the first book but it is not necessary but it does give you a background on the characters so that it is easier to follow.

excellence

This is Book 2 of the Monstrumologist Series. It is fantastic. The narration is superior to most audiobooks. The story perfectly continues the series, the characters mature and new characters do not disappoint. Although this series is a dark one and it has plenty of violence and gore, it is incredibly interesting and a lot of fun to listen to.

even better than the first book

the way the book is written can be confusing at some points, but is also enjoyable as it expresses the conflict of The emotions of of the characters and the Supernatural fear and terror that they experience. overall the story is more enjoyable than the first one as it focuses Less on just killing the monsters but more on understanding the monster and its background and how it hunts and how the hunter feels and how the hunted feels.

oh my god I love this book just like the first one I was hooked from the very start, though this one wasn't as grotesque and having me dry heave like the first one did ((which is a good since I listen to these books at work lol

Mr Wayne June is a Storyteller. Not a narrator. Thats what separates his narrations from every other voice on the market. His voice mixed with Lovecrafts writing is a match that was obviously meant to be.

If Lovecraft knew that wayne june was the narrator, he would not have died...he would have kept on living just so he can hear his stories told by June.

I own the entire series....But this is the only one i bought on audible, so i will have to rate all of them in one....I suggest you get these books, but be fore warned. ...wayne junes voice pulls you in, and it literally scares the hell out of me. When he wants you to feel sympathy you will. But, when he wants you to be afraid, you will be. Very Afraid.

If you're a horror buff, you will love the way the narrator handles Lovecraft's descriptive style of writing. The characters do not all sound alike, (like in a lot of audio books)..

Out of all the audiobooks i own, and i own about 60, the only ones i go back to are the ones that are narrated my wayne june.

You have to get his Poe books too......another fav of mine .

H. P. Lovecraft was a genius. His horror tales changed all modern horror fiction that came afterward, and you can see how many modern stories and movies have their roots in this important epic tale of cosmic terror. Lovecraft's vast knowledge shows in this book, making the book, at times a difficult read... especially for a teenager - as I was when I first found this wonderful book. However, having it read to you, by a professional story teller like Wayne June is a extreme thrill not to be missed.

Great to see Steakley back - and in good form

Steakley's other major book, Armour, was always one of my favorites for it's gritty, relentless depiction of a man fighting his own terror as he fights an unknowable enemy.

Vampire$ is almost two different books. For the first half, you have again this incredible relentlessness of enemy matched by a pace of action and writing that is just as relentless. The second half shifts character focus and is just as brutal but not as relentlessly active -- more classic vampire in and less reminiscent of Armour. I don't want to give the end away, other than to say I was about 80% suckered by it (in a good way). That too, reminded me of Armour.

One thing I realized when I take this book together with what I remember from Armour -- is that that Mr. Steakley understands the fear a man feels when he fights his way through doing what he must no matter how much his brain screams that he should panic and run. I didn't understand that as well back when I read Armour, but I've since become a firefighter and I recognize that feeling (multiplied a thousand fold by Mr. Steakley in his books).

Overall thoughts:

1. Thank you, Mr. Steakley, for giving us back brutal vampires that are truly evil -- a relief after the Laural K. Hamilton and Stephenie Meyer teenage softporn style.

2. All the good stuff you remember from Armour. The brutally relentless battles and the understanding of fear in a much more real and immediate way than even Stephen King can claim.

3. My one criticism is that I think this was two, or maybe three different books -- each an attempt to take on the genre from a different angle, that were merged to make a single novel. It was done fairly well, but the switch mid-way was noticeable.

Champions Eternal

I very muched enjoyed this John Steakley "Vampires Inc." story narrated by Tom Weiner. The other book "Armor" by the same author and same narrator is one of my all time favorite books and audio books, and Vampire$ brought back that same kind of excitement (perhaps only 90% as much as Armor, but 90% of best is still better than almost everything else).

I was particularly grateful to John Steakley for bringing to life another incarnation of his Jack Crow and Felix characters. I view them much like the Champion Eternal characters of Michael Moorcock where Moorcock made several incarnations of the same anti-heroes (Elric, Corwin, Hawkmoon, etc.). Vampires is basically a new incarnation of the same wonderful anti-heroes that Armor had but in our world instead of the future.

At first I thought, "Gosh this sounds a lot like John Carpenter's Vampires" but with much more character development.

HER LARYNX ROTTED AWAY YEARS AGO

THE POLICEMAN'S HEAD CAME WITH IT.

This is a vampire masterpiece, a sleeper, a character driven classic. This book was published in 2007 and took some reviewer hits because the main character is a lesbian. The recording was made in 2010. That was only six years ago, but it seems gayness was more disturbing to some, more than heads being cut off, humans being eaten alive, half deads killing people and vampires. IF YOUR DONE PISSING ON MY SHOES.

SHE WAS GETTING USED TO BEING SCARED

The story starts right off with the action, with one of the best beginnings to any book I have ever read. It gave me PROUD FLESH. These are not good looking ripped or beautiful vampires. These are bald headed, shark teethed vampires. There is a lot of action, but also character building. I thought the whole thing was smartly done.

PSYCHIC SELF DEFENSE

There is about a two to three hour lag in the late middle. There is some paranormal activity. There is a sort of dreamy scene. I could have done without some of that, but it is a small part of the whole. I used to live in Pennsylvania and part of the country where this takes place, but I had never heard of PennsylTucky before, but I know what the author is talking about.

HE'S STILL IN MY HEAD

Wellington does a great job of showing how vampires manipulate people and how they get into your head. WE WANT YOU TO KILL YOURSELF. Don't let the cover hold you back. I almost did that and I almost did that with Patient Zero, which turned out to be one of my favorite books. Zombie fans should enjoy this book.

Waste of time. Could not finish this book.

Koontz it's not

If you are a fan of Mary Higgins Clark (a very good writer in her own way) you will love this book. If you are a Koontz fan, you won't. I understood more after hearing the afterword but I was very disappointed, nevertheless.

Very Disappointed

If you're into adventure/romance novels you will probably like this. I wouldn't have downloaded it if I knew what kind of book it is. I guess it's good for the type of story. It is a rewrite of a 1976 story Koontz wrote. I wish the publisher's note told us that this isn't a typical Koontz book, I feel misled and disappointed. As far as I'm concerned, it was a waste of a credit.

Weak 3 stars.

It kept my interest, but it wasnt as enjoyable as I had hoped.

STORY BRIEF:

Joanna left England twelve years ago and now owns and sings in a Japanese nightclub. She has nightmares about being strapped to a bed, injected with substances, and being violated by a man with a metal hand. Alex owns a private investigating firm in the U.S. He was hired twelve years ago to find a missing woman. He sees Joanna while on vacation in Japan and believes Joanna might be that woman.

REVIEWERS OPINION:

I believe this was the authors first attempt at romantic suspense. It was written in 1979 and renewed/revised in 1995. The romantic part was too schmaltzy for me. Alex meets Joanna, they talk, and suddenly he feels love. He has this need and desire to share his life with her. This was too much too soon. I need more reasonable relationship development. There are several sex scenes. They are briefly referred to with no details, for example They made love together twice. Im not complaining - just informing.

Joannas character was the naysayer for Alexs thoughts which became tiring. He would have a premonition or a gut feeling, and she would say something similar to thats just intuition, its not true. When he suggested something about Joannas past, she immediately dismissed it saying thats not true, when she should have said, its possible or I dont know. The result was he was always the smart one. She was always the wrong one. It rubbed me wrong. Maybe I wanted more balance to her - something interesting besides being beautiful and a good singer. One might argue she was weak because she had a past trauma. But so did Alex. He was abused by alcoholic parents.

I was annoyed with stupid actions on the part of Alex. Bad guys are following them. Bad guys hurt someone and kill someone else. Yet Alex decides he and Joanna should go after the bad guys alone. He had a lead to a bad guys location. He should have sent a team of armed and skilled undercover investigators. But no, he and Joanna go there alone and something bad happens.

Regarding stupidity, I have to say there was a surprise and some justification for it at the end. It was an intellectual justification. But it made the rest of the book frustrating with Alex and Joanna doing stupid things and being victims.

Excellent John Saul Book

Very exciting, and even though I have read many of John Sauls books, this was the first Audible book of his. The narration was excellent added greatly to the story.

Just Too Real it was spooky

The characters were so real and the problems faced by a children in foster care was so accurately depicted, it was spooky. Saul somehow manages to keep all the characters real to life while taking you down a journey to a dream like ending. A must read!

Not high on the list but a decent story with a really good performance.

An entertaining read, but that's about all

Just like the title says. It is entertaining, but very predictable, especially the ending. Some of Saul's novels that I have read have given me the shivers, but this doesn't even tickle.

One of my father authors of all time and the lady reading it did phenomenal job. Love love loved it!

A great escape...Kitty takes a holiday!

The title of the book makes it sound less serious than the book actually is...but Vaughn does a imaginative and thorough job describing the fictious werewolf culture and other paranormal subjects. Characters are well developed, and Kitty is really likeable. The mystery in the story is captivating. It is another great escape for readers in the Kitty series. Recommend reading in order to see the development of each character. Narrator is great.

Best combination of story teller I have ever hear

Carrie Vaughn's writing combined with Marguerite Gavin's reading have created the best combination of erotic love story I have heard in a long time.

Marguerite Gavin's voice made me fall in love with Carrie Vaughn's character Kitty. This is the one of the best love story thus far in the series.

There are time when the tension just drove me crazy. I developed a real antagonism toward the sherif and prosecutor. McCormick really seemed like a real person in this novel. I was glad to see his character develop. Ben added the sizzle.

If you have read this book it is still a good buy just to here Marguerite Gavin read it. What a joy to listen to.

Let us hope the fountain of inspiration continues to deliver copious amounts of the height standard of literature Carrie Vaughn has been producing. The stories are the best.

Kitty holiday goes from cursed to worse

I love the Kitty Norville books but I HATE the covers. They are everything the books arent: clichéd, wannabe-glamorous, vapidly sexual and totally unoriginal. If I wasnt reading the audiobook version, Id have to add a Dont judge me by my cover sticker to the front. Why do the publishers do this?

Sigh.

Underneath the cover is another good read in the Kitty Norville series about the werewolf host of The Midnight Hour the talk show that isnt afraid of the dark or the people who live there.

Except, in this novel, Kitty is taking a break from her show so she can write an autobiography, hence the Kitty Takes A Holiday title.

I like the way Carrie Vaughn adapts move titles for her books, its inclusive some how, inviting the reader to a peer-to-peer relationship based on a common culture. Or that could be nonsense that I make up when my over-used brain takes time off to write book reviews.

Dont be mislead, this isnt a jolly jaunt to the seaside. Kittys holiday starts off feeling like a self-imposed exile that isolates her from her fans and the energy and focus her show gives her.

Kitty is so bored by the countryside and so blocked in her writing that she ends up calling in to a newly established rival to The Midnight Hour and pretending to have a problem to discuss.

Then things get worse: curses, corpses, and a creature with glowing red eyes and very evil intentions.

Kitty Takes A Holiday is darker than its predecessors.

Great book! But where are the others?

A scary concept for many children would be losing their parents to some horrible disease, but what if that disease made them want to eat you?

Charlie Higson captures the way life would be in a world ruled by children while falling apart. The ups and downs in this novel are perfectly placed, and he switches between groups and scenes with well placed cliff hangers.

I definitely recommend this read to any teen who likes a good Zombie/Survival story that isn't riddled with teen romance and vampires.

However, there are several other books in this series that I would love to listen too. Where are they?

Lord of the Flies meets Zombies

I had no idea that this book even existed until my 15-year old daughter brought a physical copy home and told us how good the first ten chapters had been. She gave us a simple overview, and seeing as both my wife and I enjoy a good zombie book, decided to see if Higson's books were available through Audible. To our dismay, only this first in his series is currently available in audio format, but we figured we'd give his origin story a try anyway.

We found this to be a new twist on zombie lore. Leaving children to fend for themselves in the midst of adult conversion into sick and twisted monsters that roam the London streets proved to be a good backdrop for his story.

The characters are fleshed out well (no pun intended) and you find yourself rooting for them as they have to navigate from one creepy and dangerous situation to another throughout the course of the story, and Higson does an admirable job of capturing tween/teen angst and particular brand of defiance that causes conflicts that might not exist for adults. Of course, I found myself on more than one occasion having flashbacks to the original Lord of the Flies story and wish that some of the antagonistic behaviors some of the kids have toward one another felt more original, but it doesn't diminish the overall arc of the story and the reader's investment with the kids.

The book ends with a couple of great setups for the sequals that I'm eager to follow-up with, but for now, I'm going to have to have to resort to buying the printed copies as no audiobooks exist (yet - I hope) for the other four in the series.

On a side note, Paul Whitehouse's reading of The Enemy was stellar and really added some authentic British feel (and accent) to the situation, and kept us riveted.

Weak installment in a good series

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Let me just start by saying that I'm hooked on the series and am going to keep going with it. This book wasn't terrible or anything; it was just sort of... eh. Rachel Caine is great at writing character-driven plot lines, but this book was mostly descriptions of action - them moving about town, going through dark tunnels etc. It was kind of boring, and a lot of it could have been cut out. It was also totally confusing, but that's possibly because I got bored and wasn't listening that carefully. I honestly couldn't tell you exactly how or why most of the stuff happened, and it doesn't really matter.

All the books in the series end in cliff-hangers, so it's more like all the books are chapters in one giant book. This book was worse about that than most though, ending pretty much right in the middle of the story, right after a big event.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Annoyed that the book ended there. This really should've been part of a larger book.

What about Cynthia Holloways performance did you like?

She does a great job with everyone's voices and makes the characters come alive.

This one was little slow.

This one was a little slow for me and I found that the mind was wondering while listening to it. I hope that this is not an indication that the series is going down hill..

Cynthia Holloway's voice is wonderful and the story flows so well. So much conflict! The time line is so close to the previous books that you feel like you never left Morganville.

#6 In The Morganville Vampire Series

Just a quick note to those of you who saw that this was a sequel to Glass Houses - it is indeed in the series, but it is book number 6. So if you were to go from Glass Houses to Lord of Misrule, there would indeed be much of the story history eluded to that would leave you frustrated and confused. Unfortunately, books 2, 3, 4 & 5 are not available through audible.com (or iTunes or Amazon or ANYWHERE for that matter), so my best advice would be to listen to Glass Houses and if it appeals to you, read the other four books in the series and then have Lord of Misrule read to you. I have actually enjoyed reading the series in that way - seeing what I notice and infer of the characters and sotries when I read the words myself as opposed to listening, and on the flip side seeing what my imagination conjurs when I listen to someone else read the story to me. As far as the actual story of the Morganville Vampire series - it is an appealing young adult (older young adult for sure) world, and the action is non-stop. The characters appealing and not one deminsonal. I am not a teenager (or even in my 20s) anymore, and I remember wishing that they would write more novels like this when I was.
