    Title: Cry to Heaven
    Author: Anne Rice
    Narrator: Tim Curry
    Format: Abridged
    Length: 3 hrs
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-18-00
    Publisher: Random House AudioBooks

    Genres: Fiction, Horror
    Publisher's Summary:
Of the hundreds submitted to the knife at an early age - some sold by their parents, some brought by well-meaning maestros to the conservatoria of Naples to serve the music of the Church and State - few will achieve a voice so sublime, so crystalline, so pure that they will gain entrance to the mysterious, haunting world of the castrati. Here, they will know boundless fame and incredible luxury...but also know grueling dedication and sacrifice - and the tremendous pain of being despised as half-men, freaks. And as you are drawn into the castrati's strange and luminous world, Anne Rice also brings you into the sweep of 18th-century Italian life - its extraordinary decadence, opulence, and brutality.

Abridged means missing 2/3 of original book!
What disappointed you about Cry to Heaven?
This is a beautiful book and one of my favorites by Anne Rice. Unfortunately, the audio version does not live up to this at all. To have over half of the story removed is just awful. I am familiar with books being abridged, but this was excessive. Typically you would lose a few scenes here and there that are not critical to the story and maybe some of flowery descriptions in an overlong book. I would not call this an overlong book yet they cut from this book using an ax instead of a scalpel.
The audiobook fails to bring the main characters to life and glosses over the horrors and struggles over come by them. The vivacious world and scenery detailed by Rice in the book becomes a flat and watered down (barely recognizable) version of the Mediterranean. Strong and greatly influential characters become sides notes or disappear altogether! The scene cuts were so rough that I was left confused on how a new scene had come about and I have read the book three times! The written book details the life and time period of the famous Italian castrati. The audiobook focuses on the romances and sex scenes with no context provided, belittling them in the process. Characters fall in love and into bed with no rhyme or reason.
The book described on Amazon as a "sweeping saga" becomes a trite semi homoerotic fairy tale with no depth. Paint-by-number kits do a better job of paying homage to the original work than this audio book does. The sad thing is that many people will only experience this version and never know that they are missing so much.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Tim Curry?
No, his reading of this book was very stilted and his portrayal of the characters was indistinguishable from one to the next.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
I loved the book, I hated the production of the audio book. I feel cheated.
    Any additional comments?
Do not offer this book with the digital print copy. It will only leave people confused and upset that they are not getting the same quality product or even the same product at all for that matter.
    Abridged = A-Butchered
I gave this as many as 3 stars becasue Tim Curry is an excellent linguist and perfect reader: I enjoyed listening to him. But, thats where the stars stop. True, it was an interesting and somewhat unique subject but I was left with the definite feeling that much was missing in this version. It is so obvious that it has been butchered and I have not even read the unabridged book. It was like going to a movie and all you got to see was the trailer.

    Publisher's Summary:
Azriel is ghost, demon, angel - in love with the good, in thrall to the evil - and he pours out his heart to us, telling us his astonishing story. He takes us back in time to his own mortal youth in the magnificent city of Babylon. In a time of bloody wars and religious upheavals, he falls victim to a royal plot compounded by his devotion to his Hebrew God - only to be plucked from death by evil priests and sorceresses and transformed into a genii commanded to do their bidding.
Challenging these forces of destruction, Azriel embarks on his perilous journey through time - from Babylon's hanging gardens, to Europe during the black Death, to Manhattan in the 1990s - and ultimately to his crucial confrontation with the twentieth-century embodiment of all that he has struggled against.
As Azriel's quest approaches its climax, he dares to use and to risk his supernatural powers in the hope of forestalling a world-threatening conspiracy, and redeeming, at last, what was denied him so long ago: his own eternal human soul.

    Prepare for
Not one of Anne Rice's best. It starts out interesting and begins to develop nicely. Then the spririt begins to wail...and moan... and pretty much annoy the heck out of the listener. It's bad enough having no real plot throughout the entire story, but to listen to this monotone drone about...well actually nothing...is too much to bear. But stick with it because in the end comes the great finale, then end of mystery that is simply...well...stupid. I'm sorry I didn't get the abridged version, unless of course the abridged version has the 'spirit's' dialoge. In either case, prepare for a long boring experience. This is one of the rare Anne Rice's that I would skip.
And I'll give the reader one more chance, but PLEASE try not to sound like you're bored with the whole experience too!
    Monotone performance
Hard to tell if the story is good as the reader is so monotonous in his delivery I was fighting to pay attention to it.
    one of sacred
I first read this book myself and was profoundly moved. I then bought the audio for a reluctant reader I knew, but listened myself. The narration is masterful, and what can my unworthy words say about a piece of art such as this book? Please read and enjoyed the sacred story and masterful telling of Azreil. I love this book and will visit it often in my life, with reverence for a professor or a wiseman.
    Disappointing
All I can say is disappointing. Anne Rice normally does such a great job, but this book isn't the least bit interesting in my opinion. I love her Vampire Chronicles books, but not this one.
Narrator and audio quality ruins this story!
Having read this book I know the story is pretty interesting, albeit a tad bit wordy in descriptions. Sadly though the reader, Michael Prichard, and the audio quality of this audio book are both horrible. Mr. Pritchard gives nothing to the characters, he is just a dead pan reader. The audio quality is absolutely horrible too in many places. It's crackly and distant, very reminiscent of a 50's microphone. This reader just puts me to sleep! That makes me sad for this amazing writer.

    Excellent!
Very cool to have the stories read to you by the author. The middle story, "1408", is creepy and intense - a great ghost story.
    Smokers Beware
Stephen King always suprises you. If you enjoy reading something besides the standard "Scary Carrie" stories, try this collection which represents an amalgam of short works on the theme of smoking. Not only will you enjoy the stories, you'll probably find ample reason to quit smoking after doing so.
    Great
1408 is one of the best audio ghost stories you'll ever hear. Perfect for cross country drive at night.
    Enjoying Stephen King again
I have no time to read. I have two kids and a full time job so this is perfect. Getting used to Stephen's voice takes a little time, but if you have seen him on tv or in person talking its much easier to get used to it. As for his reading, its just great. People have said that hes one tone or boring, well he is a professional writer and this is not his usual gig. I look at this as a gift of sorts and we could have done much worse than this.
I've downloaded all of his books that he reads and I'm glad I did. You never know when a treasure like this will be gone for good.
    Great stories!
While not the best narrator, the author actually gives an admirable performance, so don't let that put you off.
Suspenseful, well-written, and solid delivery. Classic King.

At "Quitter's Inc." a smoker soon discovers that they'll truly stop at nothing to make sure their customers kick the habit. A betrayed husband goes out on "The Ledge" when he takes vengeance into his own hands. And in "Sometimes They Come Back," the concept of alumni is given new meaning when a high school teacher, haunted by the past, is assigned 3 new students who seem eerily familiar.

    Glover Steals the Show
This is an odd collection of the leftovers from Night Shift, all of the stories either feature the mystical or criminal element. While the writing is top-notch John Glover is really the standout giving a versatile and dynamic performance across all the stories contained here. He actually might have more characters to work with and these five and the other two collections of Night Shift combined. the one complaint here is the music. Although absent from the other two collections of Night Shift except during the interludes the music here tends to arrive for the crescendo of each story sometimes more than that and remain through the end. While the music itself is actually quite good it sometimes overshadows Glover's voice making it difficult to hear.
A great conclusion to Night Shift.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend this, because these stories are truly terrifying.
What other book might you compare The Lawnmower Man and Other Stories From Night Shift to and why?
I would compare this to the other volumes in Night Shift. The other volumes have great stories, but they are not as scary.
Which character as performed by John Glover was your favorite?
I loved the lawn mower man. He is really creepy when he sets his lawn mower on the main character. I also thought the main character in the ledge was really well written.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes
    Any additional comments?
If you want to be really scared, just listen to the story the ledge.
Enjoy the SK Classic Shorts Again in Audio!
I loved these short stories when I was a teen and have had a wonderful time revisiting them again on audio! Great Narration!
    night shift
Ok early King. stories in this batch have all been turned to movies or shorts in movie collections. All are better as stories for sure! Esp The Lawnmower Man! Where the hell did they get the movie that included retardation and virtual reality out of this short, short story? I really enjoyed the Lawnmower Man story here pretty strange and wonderful. the rest were just OK, including pretty decent performance of mangler with machine sounds and music.
My favorite King Collection thus far
This was my my favorite collection so far. The stories created a range of emotion...during lawnmower man I laughed and during quitters Inc I was on the edge of my seat. I love Stephen King, and this is a great collection for anyone whose just getting started with him and doesn't want to commit to a 1000 page book, but still satisfy the hard core fans.

    Disturbing and great!
I actually listened to this audio book for the first time a few years back. At the time I didn't know who Joe Hill was and I didn't really listen to audiobooks. I accidentally downloaded from iTunes and fell in love with it immediately! It was so dark and creepy I loved it, I started doing audiobooks because of this book! After a year or so I lost it on my iTunes account, this happened to all the books I bought through iTunes actually (thank you Audible for existing!) but this story stayed with me for years after. Then I bought Horns by Joe and was pleasantly surprised when I found out he wrote Best new Horror too!!! I love all of Joe's books and have not been disappointed yet! This is a short story but a great one!
    I absolutely loved this story!!!
This is true original horror at its best.
Great background story on all the characters.

    Publisher's Summary:
One of the finest and most influential horror writers of the 20th century, Richard Matheson (I Am Legend, The Incredible Shrinking Man, Somewhere in Time) has left his stamp on the collective imagination. Here are more than 20 of Matheson's most memorable tales of fear and paranoia, personally selected by the author. Many of these stories have already entered into popular culture, including the title story, which became a landmark episode of The Twilight Zone, and "Duel", the nail-biting tale of man versus machine that inspired Steven Spielberg's first film.
Other stories include "First Anniversary", "Dress of White Silk", "Witch War", "Dance of the Dead", "Mad House", "Prey", "Blood Son", "Crickets", "Wet Straw", "The Children of Noah", "Through Channels", "Old Haunts", "Disappearing Act", "The Holiday Man", "Legion of Plotters", "The Distributor", "Long Distance Call", "Slaughter House", and "The Likeness of Julie".

    Critic Reviews:
"The well-known title tale about a nervous air traveler is a showcase for the author's trademark less-is-more prose style, which suspensefully delineates a psychological tug-of-war between man and a monster that may be purely imagined. Timeless in their simplicity, [Matheson's] stories are also relentless in their approach to basic fears." (
    Publishers Weekly)

    An Excellent Collection
I've listened to numerous short story horror collections through
Audible and have to say that this is one of the finest. Unlike many other collections which tend to meander, wandering in and out of the horror genre, Mr Matheson's writing is pure terror; bold, original (even against contemporary authors) and, to quote Mr. King's introduction, 'unrelenting'. From the opening tale Matheson puts you on the edge of your seat and then never gives you a moments' rest! Well narrated, nice clear recording.
    Short and Terryfying
I listened to this book mostly at work and on the bus and it kept me constantly entertained. The stories here are all by Matheson [the man behind I Am Legend] so they are well written and the narration is fantastic, emotive, and captivating. The stories range in length and scope covering most of the realms of horror. From ghosts to monsters within and without all fans of horror will find something to satisfy their most carnal cravings here! As an added bonus each of Matheson's tales can be enjoyed on many levels, each one with its own messages about life, humanity, and society.
If you want entertaining classic horror fiction that is well written, well read, and engrossing pick this book up!
    Great collection - false advertising
Great stories. I was happy to get turned on to Richard Matheson and wish I would have discovered him sooner.

    TERRIFIED...
It was supposed to be a harmless camping trip. Six wayward teenagers who'd run into trouble with the law, and their court-appointed guardians, Sara and Martin Randhurst. Three nights on a small, deserted island off of Michigan's upper peninsula. A time to bond, to learn, to heal.
Then Martin told a campfire story about the island's history. Of the old civil war prison hidden in there, and the starving confederate soldiers who resorted to cannibalism to stay alive. Everyone thought it was funny. They even laughed when Martin pretended to be dragged off into the woods.
But Martin didn't come back. And neither did Sara when she went in search of him.
    Then the laughter stopped.
    ...TO DEATH
The group soon began to realize that this deserted island wasn't so deserted after all. And perhaps Martin's ridiculous story had more truth to it than anyone thought.
What's the most horrifying thing you can imagine?
This is a hundred times worse...

    Nail Gag
His pet was a man with his arms and legs cut off, eyes gauged out and tongue cut off.
This was the most disgusting, gory, violent, mindless, torture filled, intense, twisted book I have ever read. It was totally sick.
    I loved it.
    Gore-fest!
Well, I can't say I wasn't warned by the other reviewers! This book has it all: people stranded on a scary island, sociopaths, sadists, a mad scientist, and a bunch of lobotomized cannibals. The first half of the book is effectively spooky; the second half is just gross, with vivid descriptions of people being roasted, eaten, tortured, degraded, mutilated, and so on. But I'm not complaining. Most of the story is entertaining, and the narration is solid.
There is one thing that's bothering me about the story and prevents me from giving it a higher rating. A big revelation in the second half changed the complexion of the whole novel. It made me go back to listen to key passages again to see if it was possible to predict it. Were there signs buried in the story? Was the author cleverly leading us in one direction only to shock us with the truth? Or were we outright tricked? Like a lot of readers/listeners, I don't like to be fooled by cheap tricks. And this one felt pretty cheap.
Still, I liked the book overall, and I recommend it to horror and gore fans.
    Terrorfying
One of my favorite Kilborn books. One of the other reviewers used the word "twisted". This describes the story, characters, and Kilborn. Loved it!!! Thanks Jack!!!
    Twisted
You probably either love or hate this author. I can't get enough. I finished this one in 4 days which in my busy schedule is really good. I couldn't stop listening. Read by the same guy that narrated Afraid, Phil Gigante did an excellent job. I could really visualize all the characters especially Lester. If you are a fan of gore/thriller/action then don't pass this one up.

Necro Files is practically perfect. Every story is an absolute hit...and why not? We're talking John Everson, Bentley Little, Edward Lee, Joe Lansdale and George R. R. Martin, to name a few. All of the stories are dark and disturbing in their own ways, and, well, extreme. This is one anthology that horror fans, not just of the extreme variety, should have in their collections. HE HATED HIMSELF FOR HATING
HE TOLD HER SHE WAS PRETTY, AND MAYBE SHE WAS BECAUSE OF THE TELLING
This was not what I thought I was getting. I bought this for the RR Martin story, Lansdale and I like horror. I had read Meathouse Man by Martin in John Joseph Adams' THE LIVING DEAD. Martin had been in a lot of emotional pain when he wrote this story and he poured all that pain into it. It is a great story and I was hoping the rest of the collect would be like Meathouse Man.
HE HAD THE KIND OF FACE THAT ATTRACTS FLIES
Out of the 19 stories, I found seven that I really liked. They are pretty much read in chronological order. The first story was written in 1976. Than comes Landsdale's story which will have you laughing your head off, until you start crying from fright. Diary is next and it was good and weird. ABED BY MASSIE is pretty gross and involves sex with a zombie and a grandma who does oral on her daughter in law. I actually liked the story and was proud of my self for being able to handle the grossness. THAN---
    Splatter porn.
All the rest of the stories are splatter, erotica, gross, disgusting porn. The stories seem to get worse and worse and worse as far as what they do in each story. I like the Konrath kind of story which usually involves cannibalism, amputations, and mutants through inbreeding, but this has none of that, this is sticking knifes in every orifice, defecating and sex with rotting corpses. There were four stories in which I skipped to the end as they just seem to be a competition in grossness. Yet, even in splatter porn of which I am not a fan, I did find a good writer, can write an entertaining, intelligent story. Garton's story is sort of satirical, Everson's story was kind of clichéd, but I could not turn away. O'Rourke has a torture story that goes the limit. Masterton's story was a bit predictable, but I hope he wrote more stories involving the main character, who had much character. Gonzales writes a anti splatter porn, splatter porn, which does a great job covering addiction and what it could lead to.
The narrator was not consistent. Some stories he did very well, but in some, especially Meat Man, he just mailed it in.
    A Friendly Warning
    Any additional comments?
I am compelled to write a review on this audio book, well actually a bit of a warning.

When John Simpson hears of a bizarre animal attack in his old home town of High Moor, it stirs memories of a long forgotten horror. John knows the truth. A werewolf stalks the town once more, and on the night of the next full moon, the killing will begin again. He should know. He survived a werewolf attack in 1986, during the worst year of his life. It's 1986 and the town is gripped in terror after the mutilated corpse of a young boy is found in the woods. When Sergeant Steven Wilkinson begins an investigation, with the help of a specialist hunter, he soon realises that this is no ordinary animal attack. Werewolves are real, and the trail of bodies is just beginning, with young John and his friends smack in the middle of it. Twenty years later, John returns to High Moor. The latest attack involved one of his childhood enemies, but there's more going on than meets the eye. The consequences of his past actions, the reappearance of an old flame and a dying man who will either save or damn him, are the least of his problems. The night of the full moon is approaching and time is running out. But how can he hope to stop a werewolf, when every full moon he transforms into a bloodthirsty monster himself?

    A True Werewolf Horror Story!
When Chris Barnes told me about his new production I was a bit skeptical, werewolves are very similar to vampires to me and either the story is going to be really horrible or really fantastic. As I have said in some earlier reviews, the whole Twilight thing kind of ruined them for me. I have the expectations built up in my head of what a proper werewolf or vampire story should sound, feel and look like and it is pretty difficult for people meet them. With werewolves I want the following; heart pounding action (of course), a gruesome story line, interesting characters, a reason for the story to go on, ect. So again I find myself taking a chance with High Moor but I am hopeful.
High Moor is nothing near a twighlighted, glittery, cuddly, lovey dovey werewolf novel. In fact it is a complete opposite, this was an extreme, holy crap don't turn the lights off, werewolf horror story, and I loved it! Starts off strong and backs a way just a little bit for some very interesting back story of how one of the main protagonists becomes a werewolf. Then Graeme Reynolds unleashes hell upon the small town of High Moor. This is the first audiobook in a while were I actually felt something for, or connected with most of the characters, that's what happens when an author builds them up layer by layer until some are complex "real" people. While not nearly as gory as you might think from my opening sentence, don't get me wrong there was blood and gore, I mean werewolves, but it was only used to enhance the action. I know there are squeals to the print version, I so hope that audio version are made of them as I think anyone that listens to this first one will be hooked.
This is my second time listening to a performance by Chris Barnes, my first being The Cold Beneath. Sadly I couldn't remember what I thought of the previous narration, and within the first 10 seconds of High Moor I remembered. To be honest, because of his thick accent I couldn't understand a word he was saying because I was expecting something much further than what I got.
