"The Chain" is about a chain of events that ends in tragedy.
âThe Chainâ, a short story by Tobias Wolff in his collection THE NIGHT IN QUESTION, begins with a dog attacking Brian Goldâs daughter Anna. Anna is saved, but Brian is still upset, and thus a chain of events is set in motion that leads to the murder of Marcel Foley by an enraged Victor Barnes, who believes his car has been damaged by the drug-pusher to whom he owes money.
When Victor forces his way into the home where Marcel Foley is staying, he ends up murdering Marcel with the crowbar that was used to damage his car. After Marcelâs death, Victor drops the crowbar, runs downstairs and drives to his grandmotherâs house where she comforts him. This is a truly wonderful story, which repays close study. Five Stars.
Love that the sell these books on amazon.
exactly what my son needed for the fraction of the price as the bookstore on his campus.
    Astonishing
His choice of words and masterful use of imagery were thrilling. I'd never read anything of his before and now he is one of my favorites.
    Three Stars
    ok
    Brilliantly ironic and insightful...
I've only read Tobias Wolff's short stories--both this book and the ones from "In the Garden of the North American Martyrs"--but this collection has continually left me speechless. Story after story focuses on the everyday happenings of mostly "ordinary" people with an attention to detail that reminds me of eastern poets. Yet Wolff blends his take on things with a distinctly "American" flavor--that is, he's an American writer at his best. Stories like "The Chain" and "Bullet in the Brain" are emphatic in their declarations of the human condition. After reading many of them, I couldn't wait to share some particular passage or insight with a loved one--or a stranger, for that matter. In this collection, moreso than "In the Garden of the North American Martyrs", I got the distinct impression of a vibrant, funny, quietly wise writer who--as Holden Caulfield from "The Catcher in the Rye" might have said--I really wish were a personal friend.

Tobias Wolff's masterful short story about one woman's quiet revenge on the pomposity and arrogance of academia.
Meticulous, funny, eccentric - Mary has always been mindful of the complex role she plays as a professor of history. Her lectures are carefully written out beforehand; her departmental loyalties ambiguous. She is so careful, in fact, that she began to see herself as flat, dull, and lifeless.
The closing of Brandon College, the institution she'd spent more than fifteen years at, changes everything. Forced to find another position, Mary finds herself at an experimental college in rainy Oregon. Sickly and unhappy, Mary feels as if she's dying - until a letter from an old colleague holds promises of a bright future. Louise works for a prestigious school in upstate New York and wants to help her secure a position there. Excited, Mary flies across the country for an interview. But things aren't as they seem, and Mary, disenchanted with Louise's vanity and the futility of the university, for once, throws caution to the wind.

    Great story!
    Any additional comments?
Another great story by Ron. I am new to prepping and I like the fact that he has people working together, not everyone protecting just themselves. His stories make prepping much more realistic and I remember the valuable survival information easier because it's woven into a story with character you remember.
A great finale to the prepper trilogy
This book was awesome just like the other two in the series. Great story line and full of survival tips and information. I am so glad Foster decided to write more stories including the characters after this one because as usual i was left wanting more, much more. A great listen and a engaging storyline. I cant wait to find out what happens next to the zany characters I have come to love so much.

    Strange collection of short stories...Disappointed
I bought this because I saw it on a list of recommendations for reading after "Gone Girl." I don't know what the relation is supposed to be, but I didn't care for the book and so I will not be reading anything else on that list. They weren't terrible stories, but they were like ghost stories we told as children compared to anything written by Gillian Flynn.

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 6 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
Expert Book Reviews presents a comprehensive review, analysis and plot summary of Khaled Hosseini's novel And the Mountains Echoed.
This is an epic tale set in the mold of Doctor Zhivago, in which the lives of the characters are determined, often tragically, by great historical circumstances and events that they are powerless to control. Khaled Hosseini's story tells of a little Afghan girl's unlikely journey with her family.
And the Mountains Echoed is a love story of a different kind. Pari, as she is named, is loved by her older brother beyond words. When she is torn from him and her family at the tender age of three, the stage is set for the suspense that will last as long as the story: will they ever meet again?
No amount of factual history can give as deep and vivid a sense of the reality of Afghanistan in the last seventy years as this story gives. Likewise, no mere reporting or film documentary can give as lucid an account of the cruel decisions forced on people living on the verge of destitution, of the nuances and characteristics of such an ancient, complex and reactionary, but proud country as Afghanistan. It's no wonder that empires, past and present, floundered in their attempts to conquer her.
As it was for Hosseini's The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, Afghanistan is just the setting, the background, for a profound exploration of the human soul, its capacity for good and evil, paradoxically often at the same time and by the same person.

Title: A Permanent Member of the Family
    Author: Russell Banks
Narrator: Danny Campbell, Andrus Nichols, Robin Miles
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 58 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-12-13
    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 15 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
A masterly collection of new stories from Russell Banks, acclaimed author of The Sweet Hereafter and Rule of the Bone, which maps the complex terrain of the modern American family.
The New York Times lauds Russell Banks as "the most compassionate fiction writer working today," and hails him as a novelist who delivers, "wrenching, panoramic visions of American moral life." Long celebrated for his unflinching, empathetic works that explore the unspoken but hard realities of contemporary culture, Banks now turns his keen intelligence and emotional acuity on perhaps his most complex subject yet: the shape of family in its many forms.
Suffused with Banks's trademark lyricism and reckless humor, the 12 stories in A Permanent Member of the Family examine the myriad ways we try - and sometimes fail - to connect with one another, as we seek a home in the world. In the title story, a father looks back on the legend of the cherished family dog whose divided loyalties mirrored the fragmenting of his marriage.
Moving between the stark beauty of winter in upstate New York and the seductive heat of Florida, A Permanent Member of the Family charts with subtlety and precision the ebb and flow of both the families we make for ourselves and the ones we're born into, as it asks how we know the ones we love and, in turn, ourselves. One of our most acute and penetrating authors, Banks's virtuosic writing animates stories that are profoundly humane, deeply - and darkly - funny, and absolutely unforgettable.
    Members Reviews:
    Not the best collection...
Russell Banks's collection of short stories features numerous O. Henry-like plot twists. The problem is that many of these twists are completely implausible ("Blue") or, if believable, visible from a mile off ("Former Marine," "The Green Door"). The writing is serviceable, but rarely truly arresting.
    Amazing and Yet......
This is my first Russell Banks book. In this book of short stories Mr. Banks seems to use almost a formula or a common methodology in each of these stories.
I was fully engaged in the plot and characters. The prose rich, the plots detailed and interesting.
A few of the stories: Connie is a former Marine who raised his three sons by himself after his wife left the family. He is now unemployed and possibly broke after a lifetime of hard work. He sees himself as Father and Marine and has taught his sons to do the right thing. Each of his sons work in law enforcement and the problem is that Connie is desperate. He refuses to be dependent on his sons; he resorts to the unthinkable.
Another story is about a couple with two daughters who divorce and share custody, their old beloved dog becomes the glue that holds them all together still.
And in another story set in Miami a woman is caught and terrorized by an angry guard dog in a used car lot after hours.
In "Snowbirds", one of my favorite stories in the book, a friend comes down south to console and help her newly widowed best friend. The two women begin to question the status quo of their lives.
I've outlined only a few of the stories, each left me somewhat empty, wondering. This in and of itself may not be bad, but I needed/wanted something else or more.
I want to give both 5 stars and 2 stars, because in many ways each story was really good.

    Want to be an Outcast?
This is an enjoyable read. I was not not greatly impressed with the style of writing and the characterization, but I was not displeased either. Would I suggest anyone read it?
No, if you are looking for a great western.
Yes, if you are looking for a different kind of western and looking to add to your wealth of knowledge in western romance and literature, then I say "Yes'.
    amazing
This story was sweet and sad and surprising and I thought about itgreat days later. Other stories by this gentleman were also great. Its free and good. So give it a try.
    Four Stars
    Satisfied
Get it from the library or online for free
The story is a quick read, but the book format is not cost effective! It is 26 pages in very large font. In 16 font it is only 11 pages.
    A GREAT AMERICAN CLASSIC
The cover blurb describes Bret Harte as "the creator of the Western story." This may be true, but it is praise that undersells the quality of Harte's writing. While these stories contain many of the clichés to be found in typical Westerns - stage coach robberies, hangings, and slick, handsome gamblers - these are not escapist stories, but admirable studies of men and women subjected to frontier isolation and harsh conditions. They are easily comparable to the stories of Jack London, and a few of them even to John Steinbeck. If his other books are equal in quality to this selection, Harte certainly deserves to be more widely read. I remember that "The Outcasts of Poker Flat" was included in one of my high school literature anthologies, but I think that it was one that we did not read, probably because there is a prostitute in it. A common theme of many of these stories is how deeply these frontiersmen respond to innocence, whether in the form of young love or a newborn child. These are stories that will stay with you for a long time.

    Title: Local Souls
    Author: Allan Gurganus
    Narrator: Allan Gurganus

Length: 12 hrs and 44 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-23-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 28 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
With the meteoric success of Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All, Allan Gurganus placed himself among Americas most original and emotionally engaged storytellers. If his first comic novel mapped the late nineteenth-century South, Local Souls brings the twisted hilarity of Flannery OConnor kicking into our new century.
Through memorable language and bawdy humor, Gurganus returns to his mythological Falls, North Carolina, home of Widow. This first work in a decade offers three novellas mirroring todays face-lifted South, a zone revolutionized around freer sexuality, looser family ties, and superior telecommunications, yet it celebrates those locals who have chosen to stay local. In doing so, Local Souls uncovers certain old habits - adultery, incest, obsession - still very much alive in our New South, a "Winesburg, Ohio" with high-speed Internet.
Wells Tower says of Gurganus, "No living writer knows more about how humans matter to each other." Such ties of love produce hilarious, if wrenching, complications: "Fear Not" gives us a banker's daughter seeking the child she was forced to surrender when barely fifteen, only to find an adult rescuer she might have invented. In "Saints Have Mothers," a beloved high school valedictorian disappears during a trip to Africa, granting her ambitious mother a postponed fame that turns against her. And in a dramatic "Decoy," the doctor-patient friendship between two married men breaks toward desire just as a biblical flood shatters their neighborhood and rearranges their fates.
Gurganus finds fresh pathos in ancient tensions: between marriage and Eros, parenthood and personal fulfillment. He writes about erotic hunger and social embarrassment with Twain's knife-edged glee. By loving Falls, Gurganus dramatizes the passing of Hawthornes small-town nation into those Twitter-nourished lives we now expect and relish.
Four decades ago, John Cheever pronounced Allan Gurganus "the most technically gifted and morally responsive writer of his generation." Local Souls confirms Cheevers prescient faith. It deepens the luster of Gurganuss reputation for compassion and laughter. His black comedy leaves us with lasting affection for his characters and the aching aftermath of human consequences. Here is a universal work about a village.

a soulthern town then, and now
Would you listen to Local Souls again? Why?
Books narrated by the author are ones to aim for and Gurganus' voice is perfect in its pace, emotion and undersanding of the nuance of his stories. Wonderful.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Will Mabry is a complicated and thooughtful character in "Decoys" and his view of his own life spanning country to city and poor to middle class is really a wonderful and sympathetic portrayal of both. Small towns have been the subject of way too many uninterestng and overwrought novels and stories but Will's voice, through Gurganus, is true and authentic.
What about Allan Gurganuss performance did you like?
    essential to the book
    Any additional comments?
If you could get Gurganus to narrate the stories of "White People" it would be wonderful. They are some of the funniest stories I know and his voice would be terrific
    A Rare Gift
Allan Gurganus offers listeners the rare gift of a beautifully crafted piece of fiction and a reading that displays its every nuance.
