A great story of character, commitment and love!

Such an uplifting story of a principled young soldier returning home to face an indebtedness, not of his making, but one he was determined to fulfill for the sake of his family's honor and his commitment to God. Well developed characters you come to know and love with a storyline that is not always so predictable. Narrator did a very fine job as well

Annoying

This book did not meet my expectations. It's the first I've read by Ali Smith and was highly recommended, but I was very disappointed. I found the schoolgirl Georgia tedious and of very little interest and all the stuff about present tense and past tense and the death of her mother just annoying. The things presented as insightful - the girl on the porn video - were trite.

The Francesco part of the story was worse. All the gender-bending stuff was pointless.

I thought the whole thing was a waste of time and I was glad when it finished.

This was my first Ali Smith and maybe my last. There were some wonderfully descriptive extracts and the love of art and colour and fascination with how to re-create things were pleasing, as was the relationship between George and her mother followed with the struggle to deal with her loss. It was outside my normal genres and while it had some touching moments, it required by far too much concentration. I want to read for pleasure and relaxation and 'How to be both' did not allow me that, instead leaving me -at the end - with unanswered questions for which I will probably have to re-read the book - which is not likely. Overall probably not worth the straying from what I normally read.

I got half way through and lost the will to go on. The shift to different characters didn't work for me and I lost interest.

Hard going with no final feel good moment

So hyped I had to read it. Prose is excellent, idea is great story isn't up to it though. Too cryptic a tale for me.

The story wanders all over the map without any definitive direction or satisfactory ending. There is no climax within the story line.

The narrator is the only fulfilling element of this book. She brings depth to a very dull story line.

What a great find!

I loved these stories! Some of the best and most complex character writing I've read in a long time. I was sad everytime a story ended, because I didn't want to "leave" them.

Donald Antrim writes about people who hurt. They are grieving lost loves, ruined lives, and often their own dispossession in a world they have lost familiarity with. The characters seem to inhabit the spaces between words and they are often in pain but unable to identify its source. Many of the stories deal with people who have psychiatric illnesses and rely on medication or frequent hospitalizations in order to function.

There is a common theme to many of the stories. After loss, characters are trying to start anew, to rebuild their lives with someone else. This does not appear to work. In 'Another Manhattan', a man who is mentally unstable, tries to buy a bouquet for his wife. He has recently been hospitalized for psychiatric problems. No matter how hard he tries, nothing seems to go right for him. 'He Knew' is about a couple, both with psychiatric disorders. The man is much older than his wife. They are trying to make a go of it but they find themselves going in circles, repeating their life script over and over again. She has a history of being hospitalized for a suicide attempt and he suffers from depression. They rely on their medications and each other to function.

The author seems very familiar with the pain of psychiatric illness. It makes me wonder if he is intimately familiar with this. The stories are not often linear. They are bits and pieces of life, shown to the reader as a magnifying glass to enlarge the little things that lead to the larger aspects of life.

I was often struck at how the characters could no longer identify the source of their pain. One character finds that the air is suffocating him but doesn't understand why he hurts. Another can remember his electroconvulsive therapy but not how he felt while enduring it. Another remembers that his family laughed at him but is unsure of how he felt.

The stories are not exciting but they are journeys into the minds and hearts of the characters who Mr.

Less science, more mystery and romance, please!

What is this book really? Is it a mystery? A romance? A fantasy? Some sort of Science Fiction? All of the above?

It's been a week since I've finished this book and to be honest, I'm still processing it. I liked it, I know that for sure, but there was so much to take in throughout the book that it took me a lot longer to read than I had anticipated.

First of all, I'm an Ohio girl, so any book that includes Toledo and Bowling Green references has my attention!!

There is a lot of science in this book with all the astronomy talk. Most of that went over my head. (how much can we talk about black holes, really?!) There's a lot of theology about Gods related to the history of astronomy. That also went over my head. And then there were video game references, which totally went over my head. But, there's a lot of talk about astrology and how paths are created and determined based on dates, times, and locations. That part I could really get behind. What is intuition - is it a subconscious calculation or something more mystical? And there was a lot of lucid dreaming, which is not something I've experienced but have read about before and thought it was cool to have it included.

Sleep is a shallow death we practice every night.

But it was the romance that kept me reading. The idea of soul-mates and destiny or fate. Can someone herd an individual along a particular path until they reach a particular destiny/destination? Can you really fall in love with someone just by meeting them?

Why do some people fall in love each other and other don't? What is love? Its so, so stupid. Right up until its real. And then its the most important thing in the world, whether you believe in it or not.

Netzer has an amazing imagination to be able to concoct this tale. The characters are fun to read and relate to.

CURRENT and ENERGY that is hard to contain

One of my big regrets over the last couple years is that I never met Michael Hastings. He wrote some of the "great" long-form journalism pieces for Rolling Stone Magazine during the last decade ('The Runaway General' & 'Bowe Bergdahl: America's Last Prisoner of War'). Hastings' genius was a combination of gonzo passion with the ability to laser-in on stories months or years before they became news.

'The Last Magazine' gives us an energized, barely fictionalized, account of Michael Hastings' time at Newsweek. There is Nishant Patel & Sanders Berman (read Fareed Zakaria & Jon Meacham). There is sex. There is hackery. There's plenty of politics and porn, transvestites & bottom feeders. There are even twin narrators. Two sides of Michael Hastings. There is Michael Hastings the naive intern and A. E. Peoria the jaded combat vet who seems to have an inevitable destiny with self-destruction.

Like most unpublished novels discovered only after their famous authors have died, 'The Last Magazine' is a hot mess. There are parts that are repetitive, segments that go on too long, underdeveloped ideas, etc., but there is also a current and energy that is hard to contain. 'The Last Magazine' is raw and it is FUNNY.

One of my favorite tropes is Michael Hastings' dance on the fourth wall. In the beginning of the novel he details how many words he thinks the novel will be, the book's dangers, its pitfalls, etc. Hastings the author (not the narrator) reappears again and again to apologize for going too slow or too fast or for writing too much.
