Length: 16 hrs and 48 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher's Summary:
Kenzaburo Oe was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for creating "an imagined world, where life and myth condense to form a disconcerting picture of the human predicament today". In Death by Water, his recurring protagonist and literary alter ego returns to his hometown village in search of a red suitcase fabled to hold documents revealing the details of his father's death during World War II: details that will serve as the foundation for his new and final novel.
Since his youth, renowned novelist Kogito Choko planned to fictionalize his father's fatal drowning in order to fully process the loss. Stricken with guilt and regret over his failure to rescue his father, Choko has long been driven to discover why his father was boating on the river in a torrential storm. Though he remembers overhearing his father and a group of soldiers discussing an insurgent scheme to stage a suicide attack on Emperor Mikado, Choko cannot separate his memories from imagination, and his family is hesitant to reveal the entire story.
    Critic Reviews:
"This novel...proceeds almost exclusively via conversation made up of intricate, literarily and dramaturgically knowledgeable, politically progressive, long speeches. And it is enchanting." (Booklist)

    Publisher's Summary:
From one of the greatest writers of our time: a spellbinding, entertaining, wildly imaginative novel, which blends history and myth with tremendous philosophical depth. A masterful, mesmerising modern tale about worlds dangerously colliding, the monsters that are unleashed when reason recedes, and a beautiful testament to the power of love and humanity in chaotic times.
Inspired by 2,000 years of storytelling yet rooted in the concerns of our present moment, this is a spectacular achievement - both very funny and terrifying. It is narrated by our descendants 1,000 years hence, looking back on 'The War of the Worlds' that began with 'the time of the strangenesses': a simple gardener begins to levitate; a baby is born with the ability to detect corruption in people; the ghosts of two long-dead philosophers begin arguing once more, and storms pummel New York so hard that a crack appears in the universe, letting in the destructive djinns of myth. Nothing less than the survival of our world is at stake. Only one, a djinn princess who centuries before had learnt to love humankind, resolves to help us: in the face of dynastic intrigue, she raises an army composed of her semi-magical great-great-grandchildren - a small motley crew of endearing characters who come together to save the world in a battle waged for 1,001 nights - or, to be precise, two years, eight months, and 28 nights.

An oblique view of the world
What did you like most about Two Years Eight Months and Twenty-Eight Nights?
I loved the way that Salman Rushie uses the format of a fantasy story in almost fable-like fashion to hold a mirror up to our world today.
What did you like best about this story?
Matching the fantasy to today's reality
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
As the story is quite complex and there are many characters with curious names, it is worth, if not listening in one scene, at least to listen as continuously as possible.
    if you like fairies
The love child of One hundred years of solitude and The Master and Margarita. Not my genre of preference, but a fun story well told.
    Wonderful story!
I love fairy tales and magic and novels that deal with the difficult questions in life and with the even harder attempts at an answer. Here both kinds of novel are combined. A bit confusing at times, but with so many great passages that I had no trouble sticking with it.

Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 7 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
From Pulitzer Prize - winning book critic Michael Dirda comes a collection of his most personal and engaging essays on the literary life - the perfect companion for any lover of books.
Michael Dirda has been hailed as "the best-read person in America" by the Paris Review and "the best book critic in America" by the New York Observer. In addition to the Pulitzer Prize, he was awarded for his reviews in the Washington Post, and he picked up an Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for his book On Conan Doyle.
Dirda's latest volume collects fifty of his witty and wide-ranging reflections on literary journalism, book collecting, and the writers he loves. Reaching from the classics to the postmoderns, his allusions dance from Samuel Johnson, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and M. F. K. Fisher to Marilynne Robinson, Hunter S. Thompson, and David Foster Wallace. Dirda's topics are equally diverse: literary pets, the lost art of cursive writing, book inscriptions, the pleasures of science fiction conventions, author photographs, novelists in old age, Oberlin College, a year in Marseille, writer's block, and much more, not to overlook a few rants about Washington life and American culture. As admirers of his earlier books will expect, there are annotated lists galore - of perfect book titles, great adventure novels, favorite words, essential books about books, and beloved children's classics, as well as a revealing peek at the titles Michael keeps on his own nightstand.
Funny and erudite, occasionally poignant or angry, Browsings is a celebration of the reading life, a fan's notes, and the perfect gift for any book lover.

    His Bookish Life
For one year (2012), literary journalist and critic Michael Dirda wrote a weekly column for the website of The American Scholar, the quarterly magazine of the Phi Beta Kappa Society. Despite the potentially snooty surroundings, Dirda's columns, collected here in full, are relaxed and casual. Most of the columns are about books or reading or people in the book business. Some of the columns start out being about one thing and end up being about something else. Dirda suggests reading these collected columns a few at a time rather than in big chunks. That worked well for me.
Writing a weekly column is quite a bit different from writing book reviews, which is what Dirda does at the Washington Post. Without the focus of writing about a very specific topic, Dirda sometimes seemed a little untethered, and many of the pieces ended up being a list of some kind (his favorite bookstores, the books on his nightstand, his favorite reference books). Another recurring topic was classic adventure novels from around 1860-1930. He also likes classic science fiction of the 1950s and 1960s. Although I am not a fan of those genres and know little about them, I still enjoyed reading his thoughts about them.
A couple of the pieces had nothing at all to do with books -- for instance, he and his wife went to Colorado for some hiking and spent the day in traffic jams caused by construction. It was really just a rant, but he managed to make even that fun to read.
My favorite columns were about the many people he knows from a long career in the book business -- booksellers, authors, critics, editors.

    Language: English
    Release date: 08-11-15
    Publisher: Macmillan Audio
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 5 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
When Walter Stahl was five years old, his mother drove away in the family's blue Volvo and never came back. Now 17, living in the dregs of Las Vegas, taking care of his ailing father and marking time in a dead-end job along the Strip, Walter's life so far has been defined by her absence. He doesn't remember what she looks like; he's never so much as seen a photograph. But still he looks for her among the groups of tourists he runs into every day, allowing himself the dim hope that she might still be out there, somewhere.
But when Walter meets Chrysto and Acacia, a brother and sister working as living statues at the Venetian Hotel, his world cracks wide open. With them he discovers a Las Vegas he never knew existed and, as feelings for Chrysto develop, a side of himself he never knew he had. At the same time, clues behind his mother's disappearance finally start to reveal themselves, and Walter is confronted with not only the truth about himself, but also that of his family history.
Threading through this coming-of-age story are beautiful, heart-wrenching graphic illustrations which reveal the journey of Walter's mother Emily: how she left everything to chase a vision of Liberace across the country, and how Walter's father Owen went searching for her amongst the gondolas of the Venetian Hotel.
In James Sie's debut novel, Still Life Las Vegas, the magical collides with the mundane; memory, sexual awakening, and familial ties all lead to a place where everything is illuminated, and nothing is real.
This audiobook includes narrative describing the drawings featured in the PDF.
    Critic Reviews:

Funny, touching, and unusual novel--a triumph!
Absolutely terrific debut! This is a novel that reminds me, at times, of Michael Cunningham's work (particularly in The Hours, which uses a similar device with alternating narratives and time shifts), but there is greater warmth in Sie's novel. The humor is stronger, even laugh-out-loud, at times. And the sense of longing and need among the characters is palpable and raw. Sungyoon Choi's graphics are an added bonus, illustrating a central character's point of view while seamlessly moving the plot forward and informing the reader at critical points. Still Life Las Vegas is a beautifully done page-turner that's heartwarming, funny, tragic, and resonant with the triumphs and disappointments that come with the passage of time. I can't wait to see what comes next from James Sie!
    Wow! I loved it!
How rareâsomething new, a genuinely novel novel. This is a sexy, hilarious, heartbreaking funhouse ride through sequined American cultureâVegas, Liberace, anti-depressants, accordions. I couldnât put it down. I read the last third in one sitting, and, after I wiped my eyes, I was sorry to leave this dreamlike and dream-filled world.

    Publisher's Summary:

    Heartfelt listening
I loved the rich characterisation and the way past and future were laid out in this book. The story was deeply moving and honestly told, it brought me to tears. The narrator read brilliantly, her voice was easy to listen to, she read with emotion when the story required it and it was clear which character was speaking.

Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
St. Urbains Horseman is a complex, moving, and wonderfully comic evocation of a generation consumed with guilt - guilt at not joining every battle, at not healing every wound. Thirty-seven-year-old Jake Hersh is a film director of modest success, a faithful husband, and a man in disgrace. His alter ego is his cousin Joey, a legend in their childhood neighbourhood in Montreal. Nazi-hunter, adventurer, and hero of the Spanish Civil War, Joey is the avenging horseman of Jakes impotent dreams. When Jake becomes embroiled in a scandalous trial in London, England, he puts his own unadventurous life on trial as well, finding it desperately wanting as he steadfastly longs for the Horsemans glorious return.
Irreverent, deeply felt, as scathing in its critique of social mores as it is uproariously funny, St. Urbains Horseman confirms Mordecai Richlers reputation as a pre-eminent observer of the hypocrisies and absurdities of modern life.
    Members Reviews:
    St. Urbain or Duddy?
It's a toss-up as to which one is more enjoyable. Both books are brimming with comic invention. As is Joshua, but to me it's between Duddy and St. Urbain's Horseman. I think St. Urbain wins out narrowly for pure enjoyment. There are complete comic set pieces in the book, and it's a touch less dark than Duddy. Some of the drama in Duddy is untainted by the comedy, and so to me it's a slightly more serious novel. And a better one. I'd give St. Urbain the opposite description: most of its comedy is unsullied by the book's drama.
St. Urbain was another Richler foray into ex-pat territory - a territory he mined throughout his career. There are plenty of laughs, lots of stereotyping, but it's much less goofy and adolescent than Cocksure, for example. For some people, it won't be very funny - Richler went out of his way to be at least a little offensive every chance he got, and this book is no exception.
Nonetheless, a very good read. Four stars.
The Intensity Builds as We Read
As a point of reference, I have read all of Richler's major works and a few of his early novellas. This was written after Richler's sexual obsession in his British phase and he tells an interesting story about a young film director from Montreal who has moved to Britain The novel follows from his wildly creative novel Cocksure which as story immersed in sexual obsession. This is a far tamer novel and it is longer and more substantial but less creative. Overall, it is among his best efforts.
Following on from the very liberated Cocksure, we see a much more conventional and down to earth Richler who has attempted to integrate British making with biographical elements from his own youth.
Modecai Richler (1931 to 2001) grew up in Montreal and that city is the setting for many of his stories - but not all. Many of his novels are about Jews living in Canada and Britain post WWII.
He is best known for his tales of life in and around St. Urbain Street. That is an area of three story buildings or walk up row houses located just east of the mountain in Montreal, and north of the commercial center of the city. At one time this was the center of Jewish immigrant life. Many Jews coming to Montreal started there but then moved on to Outrement, Hamstead, and other districts. His father was a scrap dealer and he graduated from a heavily Jewish high school, Baron Byng High School, which has other famous alumni including William Shatner of Star Trek fame.

The Nightingale is a historical novel by writer Kristin Hannah. It tells the story of two French sisters, Vianne Mauriac and Isabelle Rossignol, during the German occupation of France in World War II.
Fifty years after the end of the war, a recently widowed woman in a coastal town in Oregon is preparing to move to a nursing home because her cancer has returned. Her son, a surgeon, comes to help her and finds her in the attic, going through a trunk of old things he has never seen.

Tensions are high among the French citizenry as they await the start of the war. The sufferings of the Great War, and the millions of lives lost, are still fresh in their minds....
