    Publisher's Summary:
In this imaginative debut, the tale of Noah's ark is brilliantly recast as a story of fate and family, set in a near-future London.
Over the course of a single night in 2052, a homeless man named Cuthbert Handley sets out on an astonishing quest: to release the animals of the London Zoo. When he was a young boy, Cuthbert's grandmother had told him he inherited a magical ability to communicate with the animal world - a gift she called the Wonderments. Ever since his older brother's death in childhood, Cuthbert has heard voices. These maddening whispers must be the Wonderments, he believes, and recently they have promised to reunite him with his lost brother and bring about the coming of a Lord of Animals...if he fulfills this curious request.
Cuthbert flickers in and out of awareness throughout his desperate pursuit. But his grand plan is not the only thing that threatens to disturb the collective unease of the city. Around him is greater turmoil as the rest of the world anxiously anticipates the rise of a suicide cult set on destroying the world's animals along with themselves.
Meanwhile Cuthbert doggedly roams the zoo, cutting open the enclosures while pressing the animals for information about his brother. Just as this unlikely yet loveable hero begins to release the animals, the cult's members flood the city's streets. Has Cuthbert succeeded in harnessing the power of the Wonderments, or has he only added to the chaos - and sealed these innocent animals' fates?
Night of the Animals is an enchanting and inventive tale that explores the boundaries of reality, the ghosts of love and trauma, and the power of redemption.

    Too much
Starts off with too much information to be sorted out and very few links to solving this dilemma.
    Waste of time!
The worst book I have ever read. Usually even if I don't really like a book I can always find something about it that I enjoyed. This book had NOTHING! The main character is a crazy drug addict who has a past of abusing animals who never gets developed past that. The premise of this book is a good one, however I have never read such a poorly written book. If you are an animal lover who thinks you are going to read a book about an animal saviour in the not so distance future think again. instead you go on a muddled journey with detailed animal abuse that goes no where and has no point. Don't waste your money. I listened to end waiting hoping the writer was going to redeem the story and their self & I was sadly disappointed. I could go on and on about all of reasons this book was a waste of time but I running out of room and have wasted to much time on it as it is.

    Publisher's Summary:
An electrifying debut by sensational new literary talent Anna Noyes, Goodnight, Beautiful Women surveys the residents of small New England coastal towns in tales that probe boundaries of familial intimacy, coming-of-age sexuality, desirous girlhood, and lost love.
Moving along the Maine coast and beyond, the interconnected stories in Goodnight, Beautiful Women bring us into the sultry, mysterious inner lives of New England women and girls as they navigate the dangers and struggles of their outer worlds. With novelistic breadth and a quicksilver emotional intelligence, Noyes explores the ruptures and vicissitudes of growing up and growing old and shines a light on our most uncomfortable impulses while masterfully charting the depths of our murky desires.
A woman watches her husband throw one by one their earthly possessions into the local quarry before vanishing himself; two girls from very different social classes find themselves deep in the throes of a punishing affair; a motherless teenager is sexually awakened in the aftermath of a local trauma; and a woman's guilt from a childhood lie about her intellectually disabled cousin reverberates into her married years. Dark and brilliant, rhythmic and lucid, Goodnight, Beautiful Women marks the arrival of a fearless and unique new young voice in American fiction.

    Publisher's Summary:
The following three tales are adapted from stories told by the American Indians. These are three of my favorite coyote stories. They are:
"The Story of Coyote, Buffalo, and the Rock", told by the Sioux, a tribe from the Northwest, where they once formed the Great Sioux Nation, in the area that later became the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, Montana, and Wyoming.
"How Coyote Became Clever", told by the Karok, a tribe from Northwestern California, located along the Klamath River.
"How Coyote Brought Winter into the World", told by the Zuni Indians, one of the pueblo peoples, who have lived in villages in the area of New Mexico.
While these Indian tribes come from very different areas, their coyote stories are similar in the way Coyote has friends with other animals, participates with them on adventures, and screws things up no matter what he does.

    knocked my socks off
This is a powerful and beautifully written novel. Its fearless story tackles and deftly explores the complexity and force of the relationships we have with those who gave birth to us and those we give birth to, sparing the reader nothing in its portrayal of the nuance, ache, and joy of those relationships. It is wonderful to read, and gorgeously human.
    Wonderful and heartbreaking
I really loved this book, and I'm still feeling the emotional impact a week after reading. The characters are so flawed but also so relatable in many ways, and I found myself understanding their choices even though they were sometimes quite heartbreaking. We know from very early on that there's this Terrible Horrible Thing coming, and I thought that would make it less impactful or easier to read about, but it's written in such a way that it still leaves you reeling. The switch between mother and daughter's viewpoints, as well as present day vs past, made the story so engaging and complex in a way I didn't expect when I first started the book. I found myself not being able to put it down, desperate to find out how things unraveled.
    Beautifully and empathetically written
Lynn Steger Strong's "Hold Still" is a can't-put-it-down read that leaves you contemplating the complexities of your own relationships with your parents and your children. Beautifully and empathetically written, Strong manages to combine a unique tale with the all-too-imporant themes of guilt, reliance, heartbreak, and renewal.
    Well written
Took a while to get into the story, and the main character isn't all that likable, but I did get pulled in, and found myself eager to find out more about this family and what had caused them such anguish. Well written and worth reading.
    Four Stars
Very dark and depressing at points, but well written. I was not a fan of the ending.

one of the most rewarding books to listen too
one of the most rewarding books I've listened too using Audible. The other was Lonesome Dove
Great read for young adult and adult audience.
Poignant and thoughtful story, with a realistic portrayal of this family s struggle. Most impressive was the insight into the way an autistic boy sees the world. Definitely worth reading. Sue
    The Eye of the Sheep
This was a book chosen by my book club and not one I had ever considered reading.
When I began to listen I was a little taken aback as to how Australian (the accent and cadences) it was - I wasn't expecting it :) However as I became absorbed in the story I couldn't imagine it read any other way - in fact I don't think others who read the text enjoyed the story as much as the few of us who listened to it.
I really appreciated the story as well, even though it was tragic.
How to write from the perspective of the mind of a child with autism?? Sofie's telling of story through the voice of Jimmy was brilliant.
    Great Australian story
Loved this book as told through the eyes of an autistic child. About domestic violence, alcoholism, Australian families and a mothers love. The narrator is very talented and made listening to this book even more enriching. A worthwhile "read"

Summary of My Name Is Lucy Barton by Elizabeth Strout | Includes Analysis
    Preview:
My Name Is Lucy Barton tells the story of the title character and her relationship with her family, particularly her mother and first husband. It considers the perception of poverty by those who live both inside and outside of it. Much of the story takes place in a hospital in New York City, where Lucy Barton goes to have her appendix removed. Instead of going straight home, Lucy becomes ill and remains in the hospital for nearly nine weeks.
Lucy was born into poverty and grew up with her mother, father, older brother, and older sister in the garage of her uncle's home. She didn't have loving relationships with her parents or her siblings. They lived in isolation both physically, as they had no neighbors, and culturally, as they did not have a television, newspapers, or magazines in their home. As a result of her isolation, Lucy often felt socially awkward for not understanding cultural references or not always knowing how to act in certain social situations....

    Overcoming poverty
My Name is Lucy Barton by Elizabeth Strout is the story of a woman born into poverty who was able to work her way out of it, but could not totally shake the deep impact poverty made on her psyche. Lucy Barton, rejected by her parents, picked on by outsiders because she is poor, and finally in an unsatisfactory marriage, finds her way through life despite the handicaps. In some ways, the indelible impression poverty has left on her contributes to her success as a writer, and makes her more sensitive to the suffering of others.

    Title: Peacekeeping
    Subtitle: A Novel
    Author: Mischa Berlinski

Length: 14 hrs and 18 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-08-16
    Publisher: Macmillan Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 28 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
The daring, eagerly anticipated second novel by The National Book Award-nominated author of Fieldwork
Mischa Berlinski's first novel, Fieldwork, was published in 2007 to rave reviews - Hilary Mantel called it "a quirky, often brilliant debut" and Stephen King said it was "a story that cooks like a mother" - and it was a finalist for the National Book Award. Now Berlinski returns with Peacekeeping, an equally enthralling story of love, politics, and death in the world's most intriguing country: Haiti.
When Terry White, a former deputy sheriff and a failed politician, goes broke in the 2007-2008 financial crisis, he takes a job working for the UN, helping to train the Haitian police. He's sent to the remote town of Jérémie, where there are more coffin makers than restaurants, more donkeys than cars, and the dirt roads all slope down sooner or later to the postcard sea. Terry is swept up in the town's complex politics when he befriends an earnest, reforming, American-educated judge. Soon he convinces the judge to oppose the corrupt but charismatic Sénateur Maxim Bayard in an upcoming election. But when Terry falls in love with the judge's wife, the electoral drama threatens to become a disaster.
Tense, atmospheric, tightly plotted, and surprisingly funny, Peacekeeping confirms Berlinski's gifts as a storyteller. Like Fieldwork, it explores a part of the world that is as fascinating as it is misunderstood - and takes us into the depths of the human soul, where the thirst for power and the need for love can overrun judgment and morality.
    Critic Reviews:
"Ben Williams's narration couldn't be more perfect for this tragicomic novel of Haiti. Williams perfectly inhabits the wry, observant, somewhat detached traveling spouse of an aid worker. Williams's talent is not just with the subtle inflections in English and Creole that give personality and heart to the colorful characters.... His conversational delivery also enhances the listener's understanding of Haiti's confounding mix of politics and superstition." (

    Language: English
    Release date: 03-01-16
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 4 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
An emotional thriller by novelist Bruce Wagner, I Met Someone is the story of a fictional Hollywood marriage on the precipice of disaster - and an enthralling meditation on the world in which we live.
Bruce Wagner's I Met Someone is the story of Oscar Award-winning actress Dusty Wilding; her wife, Allegra; a long-lost daughter; and the unspeakable secret hidden beneath the glamor of their lavish, carefully calibrated celebrity life. After Allegra suffers a miscarriage, Dusty embarks on a search for the daughter she lost at age 16 and uncovers the answer to a question that has haunted her for decades.
With riveting suspense, Wagner moves between the perspectives of his characters, revealing their individual traumas and the uncanny connections to each other's past lives. I Met Someone sends the listener down a rabbit hole of the human psyche, with Wagner's remarkable insights into our collective obsession with great wealth and fame, and surprises with unimaginable plot turns and unexpected fate. Alternately tender, shocking, and poetic, I Met Someone is Wagner's most captivating and affecting novel yet.
    Members Reviews:
    Beautiful, Poetic, Devastating
Bruce Wagner's brilliance is in his ability to make the unlikely and extreme both believable and relatable. With I Met Someone, he's found a beautiful metaphor to illustrate all the nuanced ways that narcissists consume the ones they love, with one character going so far as to literally steal his son's heart. Julianne Moore's performance is amazing, as good as anything she's ever done.
    Totally Brilliant.
Where does I Met Someone rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
    High.
What other book might you compare I Met Someone to and why?
Shares themes with Dead Stars, but is overall, a more touching and human story. Dead Stars was also fantastic, in a different way.
Have you listened to any of Julianne Moores other performances before? How does this one compare?
    She was perfectly cast.
If you could rename I Met Someone, what would you call it?
    Ouroboros
    Any additional comments?
It is precisely Wagner's willingness to describe our world as it is, that makes this book and his others, so brilliant. The critics often slam Wagner for wasting his formidable talent as a writer (the man can turn a phrase!) on unworthy lowbrow pop culture subject matter, but this assessment misses the point. Sure, Wagner could imagine a world more palatable to highbrow tastes, perhaps something more "noble", like the conflict in Sudan, or something about academics as David Lodge does, but that would lame and predictable. Distasteful as it may be to delicate critical sensibilities, Wagners universe is governed by TMZ, and the citizens pledge allegiance to their inalienable rights to unfettered narcissism and the pursuit of fame. Wagner is a scholar of pop culture, he does his homework, he is fluent in the profane discourse. He humbly accepts, for better or worse, we live in a Kardashian zeitgeist. He uncovers depth in the superficial and meaning in the seemingly meaningless. That said, he is not a redeemer of pop culture, he is simply an astute observer of the machinery. It is Wagner's willingness to face the reality of our times and to understand it with scholarly anthropological rigor, that makes him such a great writerno doubt one of the best of his generation.
