    Title: Little Deaths
    Author: Emma Flint
    Narrator: Lauren Fortgang, Graham Halstead
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 10 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-12-17
    Publisher: Macmillan Digital Audio
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
It's the summer of 1965, and the streets of Queens, New York, shimmer in a heat wave. One July morning, Ruth Malone wakes to find a bedroom window wide open and her two young children missing. After a desperate search, the police make a horrifying discovery.
Noting Ruth's perfectly made-up face and provocative clothing, the empty liquor bottles and love letters that litter her apartment, the detectives leap to convenient conclusions, fuelled by neighbourhood gossip and speculation. Sent to cover the case on his first major assignment, tabloid reporter Pete Wonicke at first can't help but do the same. But the longer he spends watching Ruth, the more he learns about the darker workings of the police and the press. Soon Pete begins to doubt everything he thought he knew.
Ruth Malone is enthralling, challenging and secretive - is she really capable of murder?
Haunting, intoxicating and heart-poundingly suspenseful, Little Deaths is a gripping novel about love, morality and obsession, exploring the capacity for good and evil within us all.

A gripping listen from start to finish!
This was a really great listen that kept me gripped all the way to the end! The contrast between Ruth being heartbroken for her children's deaths set against the prejudice and misogynist opinions of the police force is done really well and makes you realise the struggle women had (and often still do) back in the 60's for being independent, wearing certain outfits or having relationships with men out of wedlock.
We are told right at the beginning that Ruth went to prison for deaths of her children and therefore the books focus is about how the police came to convict her. I think the real questions this book makes you ask if what was Ruth really on trial for in the end? The murder of her children or her behaviour as a woman deemed inappropriate by a world run by men.
It was such a fascinating listen and the dual narration of the book between Ruth and the Journalist covering the story worked perfectly. I would highly recommend!
Was she on trial for murder - or immorality?
This debut novel is based on the true case of Alice Crimmins in 1960s New York who was found guilty of murdering her two young children even though there was no conclusive proof that she had killed them. Books have been written about the case, but what Emma Flint does with it is remarkable, not least in creating such a thoroughly American novel that it is hard to believe that she is British.
Alice Crimmins becomes Ruth Malone in Flint's novel. She's an 'attractive red-haired cocktail waitress' with all the sleazy connotations that entails, and is in the middle of a very bitter custody battle with her husband Frank over their two young children Frankie and Cindy. We know from the opening scene that Ruth ends up in prison, so we know she'll be found guilty. The interest then is in the how and why this verdict was returned.
Flint unpeels Ruth's life struggling to support the two little children she loves, failing to look after them in a conventional way and indulging in a great deal of noisy sex with a lot of men, much disapproved of by the neighbourhood in the mid-1960s district of New York.

Best book read in recent time
Simple and straightforward story. Light hearted, entertaining, fun with a message. Lot of information on ecommerce and start ups. Must for all Indian parents and youngsters.
    An amazing debut for Varun
I picked up the book after listening to his speech on INKTalks. I wasn't expecting much after I read Varun's statement in the beginning. With that said, The book definitely surpassed what I gave it credit for. A nice memoir of his 1 year journey in which his idea transpired from his brain to reality. Enjoyed reading it.
    Good light read
Has some very simple but important lessons for someone starting on their own. However, the book tells a fairy tale story because you do not get lucky at every turn. But overall I enjoyed reading it.
    Five Stars
A very good book for budding entrepreneurs... enjoyed reading it.

    An exceptional book
One of those books that really touched me and which I will read again. Makes you think about your own life, the lives of others, our interaction with others, the meaning of life, love, cruelty and all of this woven into the turbulent German history of the last one hundred years.
One house and its occupants in twentieth century Germany.
Using an imaginative structure, written in a dense and memorable way, the book explores various German lives from just before the Nazi years up to German reunification. Insightful and enriching.
it's good to see what's going on in German literature these ...
Overall, it's a bit disjointed. Still, it's good to see what's going on in German literature these days.
Scenes from a summer house at the lake...
"Farbig ist nur das, woran sie sich erinnert, mitten in dieser Dunkelheit, die sie umgibt, deren Kern sie ist, farbige Erinnerungen hat sie in ihrem vom Licht vergessenen Kopf, Erinnerungen von jemand, der sie einmal war. Wer war sie? Wessen Kopf war ihr Kopf? Wem gehörten jetzt diese Erinnerungen?"
The "Girl ", who ponders these questions, is one of the protagonists in Jenny Erpenbeck's innovative and powerful novel Heimsuchung (translated expertly into "Visitation" by Susan Bernofksy). Memories of innocent excitement and youthful happiness, of arriving, settling down, and then having to leave again and of families and people loved and lost form the core of the story. Everything is centred around a lake-side summer house, surrounded by expansive woods and gardens in the region just east of Germany's capital, Berlin, affording it the role as the central character and integrating force of the narrative. Using her zooming lens, the author condenses many decades of twentieth century German history into time-specific, intricate and intimate glimpses into the lives of twelve different residents and their families living on the property.

    Publisher's Summary:
Most of us have experienced what it's like to know what someone is going to say right before they say it. Or perhaps you have been shocked by the irrefutable phenomena of coincidence, when your life intersects with another's in the most unlikely way. In gripping prose marked by stark simplicity, Another Place You've Never Been by debut novelist Rebecca Kauffman explores the intersection of human experience amidst the minutiae of everyday life.
In her mid-30s and living in Buffalo, New York (where she is originally from), Tracy spends most days at the restaurant where she works as a hostess, despite her aspirations of a career that would make use of her creative talents. Tracy's life is explored not only though her own personal point of view, but also through the viewpoints of other characters, wherein Tracy may only make a peripheral appearance or even emerge at different periods in her life.
Kauffman subtly exposes the lives of these characters - alongside the presences of spiritually mysterious Native American figures that appear throughout - and gradually reveals the true purposes of both as their paths intersect.
    Critic Reviews:
"In clear and vivid prose, Kauffman potently depicts lonely and isolated lives, marked by rash decisions made in the hope of finding connection. . . . an undeniably moving and emotionally true portrayal of the kitchen sink of human experience." (Publishers Weekly Starred Review

Truely beautiful reflection on the lives we lead
I adored this novel. Kauffman's characters are rich and thoughtful, and she weaves together their lives with a refreshing naturalness. Each vignette is powerful and insightful, beautiful and hauntingly real. Even more impactful is how in the dark moments that freckle these characters lives, there is more beauty and resiliency than doom and gloom. I found my self often in tears not over the sadness they felt, but because of how they bore through it. Tracy, the central figure in the book, is someone we all have known or have been at certain times in our lives. This one sits with you long after you've finished. I am recommending it to everyone I know.

Kauffman is brilliant in her storytelling- a weaving of vignettes that meld together magically to tell the story of Tracy. Reading this like looking at snapshots of a beautiful and indescribable lake from every different angle and throughout all the seasons. I found the language to be incredibly fluid and engaging, easy to read, but with real weight. I read the entire second half in one sitting. I can't wait for more from this author!
    Masterful
Kauffman's characters are deeply, deeply flawed. But it's love they're driven by, love and the belief that there's never going to be a slice of it for them. There's Tracy, raised by a pill-popping mother, cheated out of summer visits by her father's jealous girlfriend.

    Publisher: Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd

    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
A poignant, funny and engrossing exploration of family life centred around a cataclysmic event and its aftermath, from the author of Night Waking and Signs for Lost Children.
Adam is a stay-at-home dad who is also working on a history of the bombing and rebuilding of Coventry Cathedral. He is a good man, and he is happy. But one day he receives a call from his daughter's school to inform him that for no apparent reason, 15-year-old Miriam has collapsed and stopped breathing.
In that moment he is plunged into a world of waiting, agonising, not knowing. The story of his life and the lives of his family are rewritten and retold around this shocking central event, around a body that has inexplicably failed.
In this exceptionally courageous and unflinching novel of contemporary life, Sarah Moss goes where most of us wouldn't dare to look, and the result is riveting - unbearably sad but also miraculously funny and ultimately hopeful. The Tidal Zone explores parental love, overwhelming fear, illness and recovery. It is about clever teenagers and the challenges of marriage. It is about the NHS, academia, sex and gender in the 21st century, the work-life juggle and the politics of packing lunches and loading dishwashers. It confirms Sarah Moss as a unique voice in modern fiction and a writer of luminous intelligence.
    Members Reviews:
In a league of its own for excellence!
The Tidal Zone is quite a difficult title to write about because no other novelist at present is writing in this unique way to produce such a (almost literally) stunning impact on the listener. It richly deserves its 5+ stars.
Sarah Moss the author is an academic and The Tidal Zone is a highly sophisticated and multi-layered portrait of both a family and British culture, packed tightly with challenging and stimulating ideas and analysis. But don't be put off if this sounds a bit heavy - it is also utterly and beguilingly ordinary, presenting with stunning reality a family with all the stresses and strains of just about every family we know.
Adam looks after 15 year-old Mimi and 8 year-old Rose at home, putting his own academic work on hold as his GP wife Emma earns the money, returning home late each day drained by working for a struggling NHS, too exhausted to eat. All's well if stressful in a different way for Adam juggling household chores, children's needs, a preoccupied wife and his own attempts to keep up some vestige of academic research - until the call from school that Mimi has stopped breathing and has been rushed to hospital where she stays for the next fortnight before being returned home with the life-saving Epipen she must always carry with her in case the same happens again.
The power of the writing is in the portrayal of the effect of this shattering experience on each member of the family, the strain on the tenuous 'cobweb' which was holding Adam and Emma together even before the shock, and the painful lessons Adam has to learn in allowing Mimi to live again without strangling her with his overwhelming anxiety.

    Publisher's Summary:
In the anonymous office park of a modern software company, whip-smart software engineer Henry Hurt is a man in the middle: of life, of career, and of self-assessment. Mired in his corporate responsibilities, Henry's deathless office existence is torpedoed by losing his mother.
Overcome by "the pall", Henry seeks escape in a quest for love and purpose occasioned by a crisis in his company's fortunes. Dodging an Iago-like rival, he finds love with a colleague in his department, endangers his bond with his family, and finally confronts the single urgent question of his life.
The Adventurist is about relationships: Henry has complicated ones with his sister, Gretchen, who has stayed at home with their father; his lover, Jane, a sleek and efficient mirror image of Henry; and a tantalizing potential girlfriend, Madison, the ultimate free spirit. But his relationship to his corporate and familial responsibilities may change his fortunes even more than the women in his life.

Excellent, but for a very particular audience
Excellent, but for a very particular audience. The prose has high expectations of the reader, which is not to say that those who don't enjoy the book are fools, lazy readers, etc. It's simply to say the drama here is largely internal and will not suit everyone. But the language is breathtaking. I point to a line near the end. The narrator is describing a nurse's sponge bath for his terminally ill mother:
"The eyes were done first, the nurse's hand moving from nose to cheek, as a tear would run."
The statement is precise, ruminative and poetic. If that line prods you, the book is for you.
A masterpiece of a first novel!
Buy this book and prepare to be deeply moved as software engineer, Henry Hurt stares into the abyss. This novel offers us an empathetic view into our human existential condition as it plays out in marbled city skyscrapers, suburban technology office parks, and lonely hotel bars. If we have looked deeply, we will see ourselves in Henry Hurt, both alienated and propped up by these edifices. In this story we also find Henry (and ourselves) struggling with the messiness, complexity, pain, and comfort of relationships. We meet love at it is, forever entangled in loss. Mr. Hipps paints Henry with eloquent, intelligent, and poetic strokes, and ultimately blows open the questions without placating us with trite answers. Absolutely brilliant!
Extraordinary Writing and a Great Story
It's hard to believe this is J. Bradford Hipps' first novel. But maybe he has a dozen manuscripts in a desk drawer. He writes beautifully of one ordinary man's life, capturing the nuances of moods and feelings in a way I found remarkable. For example, you know that mood slump you can get when the light in a room falls in a certain way? Hipps has put words around that ineffable experience. I loved this novel and have recommended it to a handful of friends. If you enjoy novels that really do capture what being a live and sentient human feels like, pick up The Adventurist.
I have not read prose like this in many years -- indeed
This novel is a work of art -- the words and phrasing are as exquisite as they are delicious. Mr. Hipps' descriptions are richly vivid and come alive in the mind. I have not read prose like this in many years -- indeed, it's mind-boggling that this is his first work. The characters are real.
