Random House presents the audiobook edition of White Chrysanthemum by Mary Lynn Bracht, read by Greta Jung.
'Look for your sister after each dive. Never forget. If you see her, you are safe.'
Hana and her little sister Emi are part of an island community of haenyeo, women who make their living from diving deep into the sea off the southernmost tip of Korea.
One day Hana sees a Japanese soldier heading for where Emi is guarding the day's catch on the beach. Her mother has told her again and again never to be caught alone with one. Terrified for her sister, Hana swims as hard as she can for the shore.
So begins the story of two sisters suddenly and violently separated by war. Switchbacking between Hana in 1943 and Emi as an old woman today, White Chrysanthemum takes us into a dark and devastating corner of history. But pulling us back into the light are two women whose love for one another is strong enough to triumph over the evils of war.
A riveting, immersive read in the vein of The Kite Runner and Memoirs of a Geisha.

Retelling of an important part of the War in Asia
Of all things anyone may experience that may leave a lasting traumatic effect on an individual, it is the experience of war. In her debut novel Mary Lynn Bracht writes a pivotal tale of two Korean sisters that were at the thick of things during World War II in Japanese annexed Korea. Events that occurred in China after 1937 also affected the citizens of Korea and women that became Comfort Women to Japanese soldiers in their own country and forced to brothels in Manchuria, China. The story is about sisters Haenyeo âHanaâ and Emiko âEmiâ and the two worlds that they lived as young girls but became separate after 1942. The novel is their story and the young women that they befriended, especially Hana who would go through an ordeal that one could not ever imagine. Based on the aftermath of World War II and Korean women, Bracht also, writes of their stories and the symbol that is the Statue of Peace.
Bracht intersects the lives of Hana and Emi through time and place â in the past 1943 and the present from 2011 to 2017. Through flashbacks and the most intimate detail of memorable and not so memorable moments, the year where their lives will stop being normal and they become separated. It is the moments of the unexpected and unknown that gives both a hopeful feeling but with knowledge of what occurred during WWII, the horrifying and sinking feeling that one can see that the next chapter that involves Hana in China 1943 and how she along with other young women such as her friend Keiko would go through; the most heart-wrenching experiences and expressed with immense emotions that Hana describes of Corporal Morimoto who always showed his presence. Emiâs narrative appears so distant and so far away from the years of her youth with her sister Hana, but it is also, her revealing side of their stories that contributes to the greater meaning of Hanaâs experience that her sister is able to retell of the thousands of women that became Comfort Women.
White Chrysanthemum is a moving story that reflects upon a part of history that not too many people have read or know amidst the many stories of World War II in Asia and the Pacific. This is a book that is worth reading for curiosity as well as greater meaning of the war experience and how the war affected everyone where war existed.

  • All That Matters Audiobook by Wayson Choy

    Title: All That Matters
    Author: Wayson Choy
    Narrator: Sean Sonier
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 26 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-27-17
    Publisher: Audible Studios
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
Winner of the 2005 Trillium Book Award, finalist for the 2004 Giller Prize, and long-listed for the 2006 International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, All That Matters is the eagerly anticipated sequel to Wayson Choy's award-winning first novel, The Jade Peony.
Kiam-Kim is three years old when he arrives by ship at Gold Mountain with his father and his grandmother, Poh-Poh. From his earliest years, Kiam-Kim is deeply conscious of his responsibility to maintain the family's honor and to set an example for his younger siblings. However, his life is increasingly complicated by his burgeoning awareness of the world outside Vancouver's Chinatown.
Choy once again accomplishes the extraordinary: blending a haunting evocation of tenacious, ancient traditions with a precise, funny, and very modern coming-of-age story.
    Critic Reviews:
"A new book from Choy is an event. His writing has a quiet integrity and an exquisite grace." (Maclean's)

    .
Since I live 40 miles from Vancouver, I enjoyed reading about its past and the familiar streets and landmarks. I am always fascinated with different cultures and this book did a great job of sharing the notions of ghosts and other superstitions of the Chinese people. I taught in China and this brought back many memories of those days.
A brilliant, compelling sequel to The Jade Peony
I finished All That Matters by Wayson Choy in the wee hours of the early morning. It was so beautiful and compelling that I could hardly bear to put it down to finish the next day.
All That Matters is the long and eagerly awaited sequel to Choy's first book, the award-winning and national best-selling The Jade Peony. Expectedly, it is a continuation of Jade Peony, this time written in First Son Kiam Kim's eyes, instead of the rotating narrators (which included all of the siblings of the Chen family) found in The Jade Peony.
All That Matters is very reminiscent of The Jade Peony - it is almost like an echo of Choy's first book. The book focuses centrally on Kiam Kim, from when he first boards the Hong Kong ship to Gold Mountain (Vancouver, B.C.) to his adulthood in Vancouver's Chinatown. Kiam Kim's Poh Poh is another important part of the story, with her Old China and superstitious ways. She tells stories about ancient myths and ghosts, of which make Kiam Kim feel torn - in some instances, he believes in the things Poh Poh tells him, but his father is constantly reminding him that they are in Gold Mountain, not Old China, and to adapt essentially to "modern, scientific, Canadian ways."
Kiam Kim's responsibility as "First Son" and "Dai-Goh (Oldest Brother)" sometimes burdens him, but he soon learns that this is the Chinese way - as the First Son and the oldest sibling, he needs to be a good role-model for the rest of the family and, ultimately, refrain from "shaming" the family in any way. He is best friends with Jack O'Connor, an Irish white boy who is his next-door neighbour. A somewhat clandestine but intimate relationship between Kiam Kim and Jenny Chong (the daughter of one of Poh Poh's mah-jong mates) forms. All That Matters also deals with the second World War, of which readers will see makes a significant impact on Kiam Kim and the rest of the characters in the book.
All in all, All That Matters is a satisfying, triumphant sequel to The Jade Peony - and rightfully so that it was long and eagerly awaited.

    Re-reading this classic
It took me a while to adjust to the archaic writing style, but the story was as I remembered it. Beautiful prose and a lovely story, but alas, no HEA.
I downloaded the free version and found nothing wrong with it other than a few typos. If you decide to give it a try, note that "at ear" should be "a tear" and "gorges" should be "gorgeous." Also "fruitless" should be "fruitlets" and "irides" should be "irises."
    What a wonderful book.
A gripping mystical story of love amidst wild lands and savages.
Timeless and deeply touching, did not want to put it down.
    Beautiful, Timeless Story
A well written story that keeps you thinking - even months after you've read it. A pretty quick read with a good pace, a few surprises, and a taste of native jungle life near the Amazon. Magical.
    ANGEL AMONG US!
I feel very fortunate to find a vintage edition of this book with a sleeve, one of the first antique books I purchased, I keep it next to my bed!
    Classic
Read this when I was in my teens and loved it. Rereading it now and realize I missed a lot of the beautiful use of language. The descriptions, the portral of that period in history (which continues today) is wonderful. Rereading this is like savoring an aged and exquisite glass of wine. I wondered why it wasn't required reading in schools. It isn't politically correct and that would probably kick it off the reading list. I am very grateful for the person or persons who volunteered their time to put this book on Kindle.

    Publisher's Summary:
Winner of the 2014 Governor General's Literary Award for Fiction!
This is Thomas King's first literary novel in 15 years and follows on the success of the award-winning and best-selling The Inconvenient Indian and his beloved Green Grass, Running Water and Truth and Bright Water, both of which continue to be taught in Canadian schools and universities. Green Grass, Running Water is widely considered a contemporary Canadian classic.
In The Back of the Turtle, Gabriel returns to Smoke River, the reserve where his mother grew up and to which she returned with Gabriel's sister. The reserve is deserted after an environmental disaster killed the population, including Gabriel's family, and the wildlife. Gabriel, a brilliant scientist working for Domidion, created GreenSweep, and indirectly led to the crisis. Now he has come to see the damage and to kill himself in the sea. But as he prepares to let the water take him, he sees a young girl in the waves. Plunging in, he saves her, and soon is saving others. Who are these people with their long black hair and almond eyes who have fallen from the sky?
Filled with brilliant characters, trademark wit, wordplay, and a thorough knowledge of native myth and story-telling, this novel is a masterpiece by one of our most important writers.

    Good read!
Fascinating story with vivid images. The CEO character is over the top and not quite believeable and certainly not likable. The reference to other environmental disasters reminds us of our short memories concerning catastrophes that do not involve us directly. Good read!
    Enjoyed the story so much
Enjoyed the story so much, enjoyed learning more about this aspect of native Indian life, but I was really surprised at the humour this writer interspersed in a tragic story
    Three Stars
Character development too slow leaving some monotomy.
I was a little disappointed by the ending
I lived it as I do all his writing. I was a little disappointed by the ending...

    Publisher's Summary:
Random House presents the audiobook edition of Dunbar by Edward St Aubyn, read by Henry Goodman.
'I really did have an empire, you know,' said Dunbar. 'Have I ever told you the story of how it was stolen from me?'
Henry Dunbar, the once all-powerful head of a global corporation, is not having a good day. In his dotage he handed over care of the family firm to his two eldest daughters, Abby and Megan. But relations quickly soured, leaving him doubting the wisdom of past decisions....
Now imprisoned in a care home in the Lake District with only a demented alcoholic comedian as company, Dunbar starts planning his escape. As he flees into the hills, his family is hot on his heels. But who will find him first, his beloved youngest daughter, Florence, or the tigresses Abby and Megan, so keen to divest him of his estate?
Edward St Aubyn is renowned for his masterwork, the five Melrose novels, which dissect with savage and beautiful precision the agonies of family life. Dunbar is a devastating family story and an excoriating novel for and of our times - an examination of power, money and the value of forgiveness.

    Good in places.
This is one of the weaker attempts at adapting Shakespeare into contemporary fiction. The book works best when it deals directly with Dunbar/Lear and is less interesting dealing with the daughters as they seem to have been given too much coverage here.I am not too sure about the American setting either as I cannot help thinking it only distances the tale rather than further illuminating Shakespeare's text. The lack of Shakespeare's poetic greatness in this particular play is never overcome.A brave attempt never the less.

Title: The Man Who Created Paradise: A Fable
    Author: Gene Logsdon
    Narrator: J. Austin Moran II
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 57 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-02-17
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
Gene Logsdon's The Man Who Created Paradise is a message of hope at a time when the very concept of earth stewardship is under attack. The fable, inspired by a true story, tells how Wally Spero looked at one of the bleakest places in America -- a raw and barren strip-mined landscape -- and saw in it his escape from the drudgery of his factory job. He bought an old bulldozer and used the machine to carve patiently, acre by acre, a beautiful little farm out of a seemingly worthless wasteland.
Wally's story is a charming distillation of the themes that the late, beloved Gene Logsdon returned to again and again in his many books and hundreds of articles. Environmental restoration is the task of our time. The work of healing our land begins in our own backyards and farms, in our neighborhoods and our regions. Humans can turn the earth into a veritable paradise -- if they really want to.
The book is published by Ohio University Press.

    Just the "funnest" thing!
This little jewel is an inspiration! I dearly love Logsden anyway and in this book I found myself longing to be younger, to do it all over again. It makes the crucial point that when you do what you love you can have the "funnest" most creative life! That you can make devastated land bloom again in this way makes me want to go out and "help". However I do so much wish the book were physically larger. On Gene Logsden's blog this book is free online so yes, you can have it either way. It's worth it!
    Interesting book
The book was fine and came packaged well, no bending or tearing. Book wasn't what was expected, couldn't tell it was a very short, almost children's book story.
    Five Stars
truly enjoy Gene Logsdon. may he continue to write as long as I can read.
    A jewel
This is such a small little book to have inspired me so much.
Logsdon writes even better than is usual for him. You can almost feel his own sickness as he surveys the disemboweled hills and sallow culture of a strip-ming community - smell the richness of earth and pasture as he turns down a gravel drive - and feel hope sprout where death had come.
The photos are perfect. The parable is immensely moving. Is it all true? I don't know, but it ought to be. It moved me to make it true in my little corner of paradise lost
    Tasty but tiny!
Mr. Logsdon's book is an easy, inspiring read. It left me yearning for a simpler life... and a thicker book! Stocked with full-page photos, the book consumes all of 15 minutes to read its 36 pages of text. I can highly recommend his books, but with this one, I felt it was over too quickly.
