A smart, obsessive debut novel about a young woman studying abroad who becomes caught up in a seductive French world - and a complex web of love and lust.
When 30-year-old Brooke Thompson unexpectedly runs into a man from her past, she's plunged headlong into memories she's long tried to forget about the year she spent in France following a disastrous affair with a professor.
As a newly arrived exchange student in the picturesque city of Nantes, young Brooke develops a deep and complicated friendship with Sophie, a fellow American and stunning blonde, whose golden girl façade hides a precarious emotional fragility. Sophie and Brooke soon become inseparable and find themselves intoxicated by their new surroundings - and each other.
But their lives are forever changed when they meet a sly, stylish French student, Veronique, and her impossibly sexy older cousin, Alex. The cousins draw Sophie and Brooke into an irresistible world of art, money, decadence, and ultimately, a disastrous love triangle that consumes them both. And of the two of them, only one will make it home.

Light, romantic fiction - enjoyable but not deep.
I picked this book up on sale not knowing what to expect. I am not a reader of light, romantic fiction as a general rule, but the description attracted me due to its indication that the story revolves around life abroad and had some level of mystery. (I think they used the descriptors "intrigue" and "web".) If you are expecting mystery don't buy it. There is a twist at the end, but not enough to classify it as mysterious. If you are a lover of contemporary fiction with some humor and some romance then you may find it both interesting and entertaining. This is a quick and easy read which entertained me and never ventured into a place where I was either confused or thinking. The problem is that I like books which force me to be uncomfortable, to think hard and to feel confused. I like books which are deep and intricate rather than entertaining. I like characters who are deeply flawed, in pain, angry, obstinate, stubborn, funny, kind, likable and unlikable.
Cassandra Campbell's narration is beautiful, sweet and subtle. She was the reason for the sale and so now I am looking forward to two other books I bought which she read. I am grateful for that.
    Can't finish it
It's painfully obvious every time the narrator inhales to breathe and it's driving me batty. It's so distracting I can't proceed another minute. It might be a good book, I'll never know.

Length: 20 hrs and 21 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-02-16
    Publisher: Cherry Hill Publishing, LLC

    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
Set in London, New York, and San Francisco from the late 19th century through the first decades of the 20th, Domina is the inspiring saga of one woman's personal and professional triumph against the prejudices of her time.
Beautiful and courageous, Samantha Hargrave dares to dream that she will become one of the first female doctors - and surgeons - in America. Born in the slums of London and possessing a special gift for healing, Samantha struggles to enter the all-male medical profession. When her ambition encounters hostile rejection in England, she sails to America, where she meets an eccentric doctor who takes her on as an apprentice. But at the high-profile Astor Ball in New York, Samantha is introduced to the second of the three men who will change her life forever - and love just might interfere with her ambition.
Acclaimed novelist Barbara Wood reveals her remarkable talent by capturing Samantha's indomitable spirit, making Domina a literary triumph.
    Critic Reviews:
"Wood creates genuine, engaging characters whose stories are fascinating." (Library Journal)
"It is rare and pleasurable to find a novel that expresses the glories and disgraces of the medical profession from a woman's perspective." (Booklist)
"Wood crafts vivid sketches of women who triumph over destiny." (Publishers Weekly)

    Really bad.
The plot has been modified, the original ending cut completely, although the audiobook claims to be unabridged. The narrator's accent is poor, she is unable to shift between British and American pronunciation, vital to the plot, and, worst of all,her mispronunciation of certain English words denotes a high level of ignorance of the English language. I am extremely disappointed and dismayed. If audiobook producers are becoming so undiscerning as to accept such a performance, then what we can expect in the future is anyone's guess.
    highly recommend!
About 12 years ago I had read a book called the Blessing Stone by Barbara Wood and fell in love with it. it's been that long since I've read any of her work and welll worth the wait. She once again tells an epic tale of a woman who against all odds manages to find that strength and courage lies within as she triumphs in the face of so much of the adversities one might face during that period in history.
Samantha Hargraves finds love and success while induring a multitude of ignorances and prejudices of the late 1800's, as she never gives up fighting for her dream of becoming one of the first female doctors in history. The story also includes many historical facts by adding knowledge of non fictional characters, places and events of the times which adds so much relevance to the story .
An empowering must read that I am highly recommending to all of my book fanatics out there. And, if you get the chance, be sure to read the Blessing Stone by this author as well...there is even a connection and reference to this story in Domina which was a really nice surprise. Will be reading more of her work ASAP!! She is a very underate author!!

Mickey Donnelly is smart, which isn't a good thing in his part of town. Despite having a dog called Killer and being in love with the girl next door, everyone calls him gay. He dreams of going to America, taking Wee Maggie and Ma with him to get them away from Belfast and Da.
Mickey realises it's all down to him. He has to protect Ma from herself. And sometimes, you have to be a bad boy to be a good son.
    Critic Reviews:
"A vivid, poignant and thrilling tale of troubled boyhood, The Good Son is a lot better than good - it's outstanding." (Toby Litt)
"A highly commendable debut, convincing in its realism." (Independent)
"Mickey is the funniest, most endearing human being for whom we feel huge compassion as he faces each adversity. This novel envelops the reader with its humanity and its down-to-earth humour leaves you laughing." (Booktrust)

Slice of the troubles both Funny and masterfully written
I loved the preteen view of chaos and family bonds held tight while living in a zone . The protagonist is funny, warm and clueless yet full of ways to navigate around bombs Protestants religious boundaries, girls , sex , bi sexual confusion alcoholic Dad's , bully's and his blistering , heroic Mom . I loved it
    Wonderful book
Loved this book. Captured perfectly Belfast at a time of the peak of the troubles. And yet never depressing.
A wonderful depiction of a young boy on the cusp of adolescence and all that that entails.
A mix of tension, pathos, raw humour and sheer joy.
Compared to Stand by Me and I can see why.
    Book of the year
Loved this. Really connected with Mickey, the protagonist and the narration, by the author, was very special
I could relate to a lot of this book, great fun
If you are over 50 and working class from Belfast this should pretty much be your life
    Wonderful story
I adored this book. Great characters, wonderful dialogue. Funny, sad, brilliant. Five massive stars from me.

    Members Reviews:
Wish I could give negative stars
What disappointed you about Whistling Women?
The characters were the most disappointing aspect of this book. I felt like I was reading a re-enactment of a bad junior high school play. All of the characters came across the stage without any grace and without the audience knowing anything about them, saying the lines you knew they were going to say. They were all so two dimensional, trite, and unoriginal.
What could Kelly Romo have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
An original story, characters, and ending would have been great for this book.
Would you be willing to try another one of Nicol Zanzarellas performances?
On top of an already cheesy story, characters, and plot, the narrator made this even more cheesy (didn't know it was possible) and was excruciating to listen to.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Whistling Women?
The whole angle of the nudist colony was ridiculous and ultimately unimportant to story, it was only there to try to make it original on the facade.

    Title: I'll Steal You Away

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 15 hrs and 34 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-16-15
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
Italian literary superstar Niccol Ammaniti's debut novel, I'm Not Scared, prompted gushing praise, hit international best-seller lists, and was made into a smash indie film. With his highly anticipated follow-up, Ammaniti takes his unparalleled empathy for children, his scythe-sharp observations, and his knack for building tension to a whole new level.
In a tiny Italian village, a young boy named Pietro is growing up tormented by bullies and ignored by his parents. When an aging playboy, Graziano Biglia, returns to town, a change is in the air: Pietro decides to take on the bullies, his lonely teacher, Flora, finds romance with the town's prodigal son, and the inept janitor at the school proclaims his love for his favorite prostitute. But the village isn't ready for such change, and when Graziano seduces and forgets Flora, both she and Pietro's tentative hopes seem crushed forever.
With great tenderness, Ammaniti shines light on the heart-wrenching failures and quiet redemptions of ordinary people trying to live extraordinary lives. I'll Steal You Away is a fresh and classic story of a boy learning to be a man that delivers on the promise of Ammaniti's acclaimed debut.
    Members Reviews:
    full of interesting characters
Ammaniti's style is lean and sparce but full of references to many modern topics such as art, music and literature and it was fun to recognize the references or at least some of them. The book is chock full of interesting characters, some of whom appear only briefly and then disappear. The main protagonists, Pietro,a young student and Graziano, an aging Lothario meet only once but the effect of the encounter is life altering; Ammaniti tells a good story but his dialogue is stilted and the ending improbable and unsatisfactory. Being somewhat of an Italophile, I enjoyed the depiction of a small nondescript backwater town and the lives of the folks that live there. If these kinds of things interest you, read the book otherwise give it a pass.
A lot of nice prose does not a novel make
While there are many lovely passages in this book, and the prose generally has a "keep reading me" feeling, this book fails as a novel. All the big surprises are obvious before the reader reaches them; when it is only a few pages rather than a few chapters it seems like a victory for novelist. While many of the characters are vividly described, few are given any real depth. It seems that making witty comments on the characters is more important to the author than giving them depth or motivating their actions. The result is a lot of clever caricatures carried on an uneven plot. The only really sympathetic character is the young boy Pietro, and the novel is ultimately about all the bad things that happen to him. If you want to read horror stories about children having horrible lives you can open the newspaper (or go the their on-line site). To read it as a novel there should be some deeper understanding about the human condition offered.
