They work together, collaborating in translations for a publisher. Charles embarks on more ambitious writing, his autobiography, yet increasingly it is not books but life itself that engrosses him and Sarah. In particular Frederica, the daughter of Sarah's frivolous and pleasure-seeking sister, commands their sympathy and love.
One by one the characters of a large attractive family make their appearance but it is through Frederica that the nexus of family problems is finally resolved.

    Engaging old fashioned story
Sarah and her husband are newly married. Husband has survived many years in a prison camp and has turned his back on his homeland of Germany. Together, the couple embrace their small, gentle world of rural simplicity in the Scottish highlands. They are close to Sarah's aging parents, who live nearby; they take Sarah's neglected niece under their wing and save her from the attentions of a handsome ne'er do well. It isn't suspenseful or funny, just a gentle and curiously engaging story about unpretentious, kind people whom you would love to have as friends and neighbors. Narration is just right for this story--well differentiated characters, eloquent but no scenery chewing. If you want a break from nail biting suspense, step in to the world of D. E. Stevenson for a few hours and feel refreshed and restored.
    Charming and peaceful Scottish novel
D.E. Stevenson was a wonderful author. Imagine a small town series such as the Mitford novels by Jan Karon or the Miss Read books, but in this case the setting is the countryside of Scotland during the 1940's and 50's. The warmth of Stevenson's characters always leave me smiling and wishing them well. Well done, Audible! Please offer more.
Good but it's part 2 of a duology
This book is good but to me it lacks something without first having read Sarah Morris Remembers - or listened to it. Sarah Morris Remembered tells the pre-war and wartime love story of Sarah and Charles Reed which is even better I think than Sarah's Cottage. I hope Audible will add Sarah Morris Remembered!
    Classic D.E. Stevenson
These classic books, long out of print, are such a welcome addition to Audible . Author D.E. Stevenson is often compared to Jane Austin and the Brontes. I was so pleased to find that Audible had acquired some of them on audio. I have been a long time fan of Stevenson I have almost every book she has written and these vintage stories from England only improve with listening.
D.E. Stevenson has over 50 books to her credit which were translated into many languages, transcribe into braille then made into "Talking books" The most famous books were the "Mrs Tim Christie" series that came out during WW2. I can only hope that someone will record these and Audible will acquire the rights to offer them here in the U.S.
.The only ones I did not like as much were the previously unpublished works " The Fair Miss Fortune" and" Peter West". These were her first novels and she did not feel they were up to her standards and did not allow them to be published while she was alive.
Anyone who likes Pastoral Settings in England and Scotland during the middle of last century will love these books.
A delightful glimpse of the past
I love the job that Hilary Neville had done reading several books by D. E. Stevenson.

    Couldn't Finish It
I purchased this audiobook because of the many rave reviews, but unfortunately mine wont be as kind. I didn't hold this to particularly high standards because it is a romance book, and went along with most of it until about the third section. The absolute worst thing about this audiobook is the narrator. She sounds like a little old lady, and the last thing I want is a little old lady (with a whiny voice) reading sex scenes to me. The narrator breathes heavy, swallows audibly, and has a halting way of delivering the script. And she absolutley butchers the main Comanche's way of speaking. She narrates the Indians in the same stereotypical way that most people say "how" when mimicking Native Americans, deep and drawn out, and absolutey awful for the main love interest. The book itself held my interest until the third segment. I allowed myself to believe that a Comanche could speak fluent English, and believed that he could fall in love with a white girl, but the story got repetitive very quickly. He abducts her, she fights back, he takes her home, she comes back, she tries to run away, he convinces her to stay, she runs away, he goes after her. It seemed like these Indians had nothing better to do than chase after her through the whole book. And she is such a prude I felt like screaming. Also, rape is a very prevalent theme. I wasn't offended or put out by it, but it just seemed like everyone got raped or was almost raped, and just when you think youve gotten past it they vividly describe an old rape. I guess overall my expectations were that if I managed to believe this English speaking Indian falls head over heels for a white girl and chases her all over the earth then at least take me the whole way-dont have him threaten to beat her or marry other wives, and please dont give him the voice of a typecast Indian.
    Narrator
If you could sum up Comanche Moon in three words, what would they be?
I acually liked the story, Hard to overcome the way you are brought up, hating "savages" and "whites" alike. I am am american Native and not so long ago in 2008 there was actually a woman who referred to us as "savages" in this time and age hard to believe! But she was upset over the Native americans opening a Casino....Some tend to forget where they come from, most all came from another country, we are the natives who's land was taken away...anyway that is another story.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I liked both main characters in the book, really seeing each other and being able to understand why each other has the feelings they do.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Ruth Ann Phimister?
I didn'tt like her much but I am kind of sensitive in my hearing. She smacked to much for me and I was tempted to refund my book, which I do if I don't like the story or narrator.

5-star narration, good historical western romance
Narration: Was excellent, Ross has a pleasing voice.
Story: I personally found it good fun and easy listening. Hotness level is definitely steamy.
The story was a bit cheesy at times, but it's a romance, so it was alright - I was totally expecting it. The characters were predictable, but it was to e expected in this type of novel. I'm still new to this genre, I'm usually more into Jane Austen, George Eliot type books, epic-fantasy (lotr, R.R. Martin, etc). But my line of work is so serious, and I read ALL DAY, so it's nice to have some easy listening, something not too serious.
    Very sexual...
This book is WAY more sexual than I had expected for a historical western written over ten years ago. It happens to have a good storyline and likable characters as well, so I gave it a high rating. If you like your books with lots of heat, you won't be disappointed.
    Cowboys, Shoot-outs & Sizzling Romances!
"Angel Creek" is a story set in the small town of Prosper, Colorado in the late 1800s.
The hero, Lucas Cochran, returns to take over the Double C Ranch after his fathers death, with plans of turning the already prosperous ranch into an empire. Needing more water, Lucas sets his sights on Angel Creek, a nearby land known for its rich soil and abundant water supply. But if he thought he could just ride into the property and throw his weight around, then he is in for a shock when he meets the defiant owner of Angel Creek, and her shotgun.
You'll be drawn into the town of Prosper, and it's surrounding ranches, by the excellent performance of Natalie Ross...you'll feel the emotions of it's well developed characters. I loved the character of the strong, independent heroine, Dee Swann.
I highly recommend Angel Creek as a refreshing addition to your Historical Romance Library.
    Great story
I loved this story, very believable. The secondary story was a little less intriging then the main but it was still very entertaining. The Narrator was very good as well. Steamy but not dirty.
    Passionate, evocative, memorable!!
I just blew another day listening to another fabulous Linda Howard book! And I really enjoyed this one! Wonderful, vibrant characters, great plot development, richly passionate, achingly tender and heart wrenching, -this is definitely a book to come back to!
Excellent narration by the talented Natalie Ross!

    Different Scottish Regency
Anne Burnett is forced to marry by proxy some obscure Scottish lunatic, Mad Earl Tiebauld, Aidan Black, whose sister arranged the marriage. Anne travels to her new home only to receive a very unfriendly welcome by her spouse, who not only rejects her, but he wants her back in London. He does some terrible things to get her to leave like making her muck out the stables, feeding a group of people with no way to feed them, cleaning the castle that hasn't been touched for years, You get the idea. However, the English transplant ignores the irritable Scot and soon her actions gain the respect and support of his clan. To her chagrin, Anne also captures Aidan's black heart just as she now loves him too. THE MARRIAGE CONTRACT is an amusing well written Regency romance starring two charming and not so mad (except in love) lead characters. When the story line stays with the main plot the battle of the sexes, it is an absolute delight that will provide fans with a powerfully pleasurable read. There is a political subplot, cleverly inserted and tied back to the prime theme, in which Adain is conflicted on whether to join the Scottish uprising or fighting for rights of his people through the law. Please Remember this is a regency romance not to 30 disk Diana Gabaldon book. This is just a fun light historical, read by Cathy Maxwell.
    Entertaining
This is the sort of book that I read, and while entertaining in the moment, forgot all about since. Not a bad story, but just forgettable. I would recommend the book if you just need to forget about everyday life for a while and listen to a predictable "feel happy" lovestory.
    Good Story
I enjoyed the story, and the Narration was good. The Reader used different Accents and Voices for different Characters.
    Great book
Lovely book to listen to. About 9 hours of just simply listening!!!
    Enjoyed it very much
Sweet romance, everything you want from a book in this genre. The narration was outstanding!

    Never buy an abridged book!
I read this book in paper years ago and thought it might be fun to hear it read. The abridged version left out so much that it made the story silly and characters became one dimensional and boring.
IF YOU'VE READ THE BOOK, DON'T BUY AUDIO VERSION!
Bottom line is this is my ALL TIME favorite HR book period. I read it yearly in print, but this abridged version is terrible. They have cut all the great parts and back story out to the point your like hey, how did we get here and why are we here. You lose time and place during the story. Buy the book it is AWESOME!
I really do not like the "Abridged" Version
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I love this book, but I cannot stand that it left out key parts to the story.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
For a start I would get someone who is much younger and not a smoker. She is interesting, but it was weird to hear a story like this through this voice.
What three words best describe Lynn Redgraves performance?
    I don't know
Did The Reluctant Suitor inspire you to do anything?
    NO
    Any additional comments?
Please get the unabridged version! I love this story but you are missing key elements. Also, please get a younger person to read the story.
    Not her best
I have read most of Kathleen Woodiwiss novels, however this is far from her best. I did not finish it. Not near as entertaining as The Flame and the Flower
    Sexy, but poorly written
The story was very formulaic and the language was painful to read at times. The use of the word "orbs" to refer to eyes over and over again made me wince each time I heard it...

    terrible
this book jumped around and had no real plot. i guess that is what you get with unabridged. worse was the narration. HORRIBLE. you could not determine what character was speaking or when the narrator was narrating. one of the worst listens i have had yet. good thing it was cheap.
    Abridged VERY poorly
The abridgement of this book is terrible. The jumps make almost no sense whatsoever. The tone of the book is lost and became very difficult to finish listening.
    Stephanie Laurens never disappoints
What made the experience of listening to The Ideal Bride the most enjoyable?
While I did enjoy the story, I do much prefer to listen to Simon Prebble's rendition. Clare Higgins did a fine job, but the enthusiasm and power that Prebble presents is exceptional.
What other book might you compare The Ideal Bride to and why?
Each and all of Stephanie Laurens novels are similar in nature, all being wonderful to read in print, but even better to listen to.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
All of Laurens books are ones that I want to listen to in one sitting, but this is impossible due to their length.
    Explicit SEX
I thought this was going to be a good romance story. Not only was the story lacking a GOOD romance ( I thought it was very lame) The sex scenes are shocking! If you want a GOOD clean romance, don't buy this book!

And for the twins Olivia and Victoria Henderson, two remarkable young women coming of age at the turn of the century, their bond was mysterious, marvelous, and often playful -- a secret realm only they inhabited.
Olivia and Victoria were the beloved daughters of a man who never fully recovered from his wife's death bearing them in 1893. But in an act of deception that only Olivia and Victoria could managa, the twins took an irrevocable step, which changed both their lives forever; and took one of the twins to the battlefield of France, the other into a marriage she longed for but could not have.

    Wow! Awesome book!
    Any additional comments?
I could NOT "put this book down"! Really enjoyed the history mixed with a beautiful love story although I felt like it could use a bit more "romance" to it. Regardless, it was an awesome story that I thoroughly enjoyed. The narrator did an amazing job as well. NO easy job and she pulled it off beautifully.I would definitely listen to another of her stories. And Brenda Joyce didn't fail my expectations in the least.
    Characters all came to life...
Loved, loved, LOVED how the reader brought the story, the setting and the characters to life. What could have been a lengthy history lesson turned into a riveting story with characters that were all distinct and real. Found myself wonderfully lost in the world of the Scottish Highlands and the excitement of Margaret and Alexander's relationship. Highly recommend! This was a terrific audio book thanks in large part to the narrator.
    A true historical romance
When I like a book I can't put it down because I want to know how it ends. This book had so many turns I couldn't wait to see to see what was next. I loved the way it stayed so close to actual historical events, it even had me looking up Robert THE Bruce. Add to that a good narrator and I give this book 5 stars.
    Far Exceeded My Expectations
"A Rose in the Storm" is not your run-of-the-mill Highland story. I don't think the Publisher's Summary did it justice. With mixed reviews I did not know what to expect, but it's one of the best books I've heard in awhile.
Brenda Joyce did her Scottish History home work and stayed close to the historical facts for the time period. It was so well written it kept my attention from beginning to end. The story was believable and Rosalind Ashford does a good job of pulling you into the story, it's as if you're there. Both author and narrator depicted the battles, castle sieges and sexual scenes realistically, yet in good taste.
    I highly recommend it!
    No tension between the H/h
On one end you have the wallpaper historical romances. The history is just a pretty set for a romance between people with very modern mindsets. The history is often non-existent, poorly researched, or just plain wrong. On the other end there is historical fiction, which ideally seeks to tell things as they were with lots of historical context and detail and make the fictional part seamlessly fit in. Personally I prefer my romance to be somewhere between the two extremes, leaning toward more historical accuracy. However, I come for the romance.

Lucian Griffin, the brother of Elizabeth's dearest friend, intends to protect Elizabeth from letting her adventures forever sully her reputation. He knows too well the regrets that come from taking unnecessary risks. Soon his earnest fondness for the sweet debutante gives way to deep affection. But if either is to have a chance at true love and happiness, they must have the courage to let go of the past - and the grace to embrace forgiveness.

    pronouncements
One of my pet peeves is when words are mispronounced. The narrator, although very good, mispronounced at least one word (davenport, if I remember correctly, was one). But overall, I enjoyed this book.
    Kept my interest. Clean story.
A wonderful romance with good Christian morals and clean language. It kept my interest all the way through. I wish more books from this author were available. The narrator also did an outstanding job.
    loved it
I loved the spunky heroine who wants to break out of a mold society has placed her in, the romance with a Handsome man with a past, and the subtle biblical references and theme. And, who is Sally, the mysterious maid? What is her story?
